I really like your teaching style. My instructor was an excellent, skilled pilot. An old guy. Had flown everything. Taught everything. But...his teaching style was gruff. Truly awesome pilot. His instructing, though, kept me on edge the whole time. He made me more nervous than ANYTHING that ever happened with the plane. The most relaxed and relieved I was throughout my flight training was the day I soloed. It was like a weight was lifted when he got out of the Warrior. I would’ve done much better with an instructor like you.
Flying with an instructor was really annoying and at some points discouraging but once I’d learned what I needed to learn and I was able to apply it in a setting by myself, that’s when you know wether or not you love flying and want to keep doing it. And almost no one decides it isn’t for them after that lol. I had a crusty old guy as my PPL instructor as well. But then I had young people for everything afterwards and that definitely made it easier.
Thanks Nate, I enjoy your videos. You have a good teaching style. You are passionate about wanting student to be not just able to fly but make intelligent decision.
I'm a private pilot from Argentina and I really enjoy watching your videos. It's remarkable how you always encourage the students! I think that self-confidence is crucial when you try to learn a new skill like this one. There are not many instructors that understand that idea, at least here in my country. Congrats!
Sebastian Gaffuri Argentina! Nice haha.. Thank you so much.. I agree that self confidence is key and that’s why I instruct the way I do.. I’m not here to berate or make the student feel like they are doing badly!
I appreciate you taking the time to spread some aviation tips with a great sense of humor. I began PPL training early in 2019, and was close to soloing when I got tasked for a deployment. Even though I was away, I feel like I was more inclined to continue training upon my return because I kept watching your videos throughout my time overseas. I love aviation, and felt like I was still connected to the community even though I had no access to fly. Thanks for what you do!
Hello mate.. gotta say I just subscribed to your channel last week and you are quickly becoming one of my favorites out there. Keep up the brilliant work.. love your style of training, you rock! Keep em coming! Thanks for bringing us along for the ride! Too bad all instructors aren’t like you.
Gotta say it again, your style of teaching your students to fly is refreshing as f****! These old german grumpy FI's in my hometown can learn a shit ton from you. Keep it up, man!
I randomly asked google is landing hard and this is the fourth video i have watched. I've been up on small planes a few times and I am itching to learn more and this is the perfect channel! Thanks for sharing this!
Good afternoon LewDix. I have followed your channel for a little over a year now and I will say that I have learned a lot of tips and tricks from you! Leaving the trim alone during a climb is definitely one of them :) I recently passed my PPL and I wanted to say thank you for the content you provide and I wanted to wish you the best of luck with the airline stuff given everything that is going on!
Great video as always! As a low time private pilot (and newly transitioning to Piper from Cessnas) I really appreciated this video! Great refresher and nice to see how much transfers from Cessnas to the wonderful world of low wings ;-)
Just found this great video in a playlist of yours and saw that it was not publicly listed yet... feels a bit like cheating 😂✈️ Awesome to remember how it feels to fly a plane with your own hands the first time, keep up the great work!
You give awesome instruction! It's been a while since I've flown with a student, and as a new CFI usually have trouble with describing how to use trim and what it does. I'm gonna have to try out your technique!
Coming back to this one as we will be covering this in my next lesson. It took a while to remember that I didn't have to keep flapping my arms first time out, but hey, we can't all be like JD right? Enjoy your teaching style, and continue to reference all your videos for tips and ideas. Thanks.
JD 👓 you flying like a total natural for your first lesson, does this guy even need instructing? Love all the vids man, sharing the aviation love, Australia.... 👌
hey bro this video helped me ALOT, i got more from this than my flight instructor! i really hope for my own training sake you keep doing these types of videos.
I’m glad you’re taking something from the video.. Remember not to use this as flight instruction but you’ll definitely see more as we progress through his training
Great Video! FI here, from early on I always try to get the student to re-trim anytime there is a speed change.... I stress the word ‘try’ haha. Good work!
Worth keeping in mind that Vcc is 87 kts on this plane. It might be a better choice (for a cooler, faster, more comfortable climb when already established at altitude) than Vy.
Hang in there bro you’re sounding a little down in the final section of this video - understandable but you’re bounce back with the airlines after the pandemic!
@@LewDixAviation No problemo! I'm serious about CO though... I once heard an NTSB guy say that the cheap tabs are great for figuring out the cause of a fatal crash.
Thanks for the vid . My ? Is you mentioned pull back on a turn to maintain altitude . could this be dangerous while doing a landing pattern ? was wondering if more rpm would be better ? Thanks
Yes, when you have a turn (usually in excess of 30 degrees bank), you will need to pull back slightly to maintain altitude because when you bank the aircraft, you traded some of the vertical lifting force from your wings to act towards the inside of the turn (horizontal component of lift). However, no additional total lift was gained and some of that total lift is now not acting upwards, but horizontally, so the plane will descend unless the pilot pulls back. Pulling back increases the angle of attack which increases total lift (see lift vectors diagram on google). Doing this at low speeds and near the ground (traffic pattern) can be dangerous because an increase in bank angle also leads to an increase in stall speed. At 30 degrees bank, this stall speed increase is about x1.3. That’s why around 30 degrees is the maximum bank angle you want to have in the pattern due to being low and slow
This is the only thing that is really irritating me, my instructor hates it when I don't have my hand on my throttle at all times. I need to always have my hand on my throttle all the time or he will do something to me xD. But since he is a new student it doesn't irritate me but I'm soo jealous of him because you are not shouting at him XD
Just like driving a car, we don't spend much time looking at the speedometer and panel - 10% like he said. We spend most of the time looking out the window, side windows, mirrors, etc.
Oh, and one more thing, I just want to ask. I always wanted to fly in a piper since I always fly in a Cessna 172. Why do people always tell me that a piper is worse than a Cessna? I just want to know your own personal opinion
Did my private in a Piper and my instrument in a C172. Honestly did not notice a huge difference, but will say that the Piper floats a little more due to being a low wing in ground effect. Also definitely a lot easier to chop and drop in a Piper than a Cessna.
Treat your first lesson not just as an experiment in flying but also an audition of your instructor. I loved my first flight and my instructor - his mannerism was very similar to this video really, and it was perfect. I was on edge, made the newbie mistakes of looking inside too much and gripping the controls a bit too tight, but I can't wait to go again. Alas, I really need to get my class 3 medical first before I can go full bore in (I have a thyroid issue which is controlled thru medication, and has to be signed off on, as I understand the situation), and with the coronavirus I'm not sure if I can until this all passes sadly.
@0:38 Please don't spell "I" "i"- it's ALWAYS capitalized! I thought "i" lowercase was a lazy American thing and that Brits would NEVER sink to such an uncouth standard! 😩 😭
