I’ve been so immersively aviation-adjacent for the past 2.5 years (as an employee of Flying Eyes) and have had the opportunity to fly with several very experienced pilots, but being able to do my first actual lesson with Lew is an opportunity I feel so incredibly grateful for. There was never a moment where I felt overwhelmed or uncomfortable, and most of that is due to the relaxed (but rigorous) way he approaches his own flying and instruction. And I imagine that the fact that we’ve known each other for almost 2 years (and thus know how to effectively communicate) is part of that equation as well. At the risk of waxing on too much, being able to learn from a friend (especially one who is so talented) and have well-edited video evidence of my discovery flight is something I feel enormously lucky to have.
I'm a firm believer that a discovery flight should be an experience to do as much as you're willing to do. Last January I finally did a discovery flight. It was supposed to be on a Saturday morning, but the weather was bad. The CFI texted me and said it wasn't looking good. I told him I had already checked the METAR and saw that it was a no-fly day. That Wednesday afternoon was the rescheduled day. We spent a little time on the FBO talking about what to expect, transfer of controls, etc. He said he was impressed I even knew what a METAR was, much less how to read it. I told him I had been watching TH-cam videos for a couple of years. He asked me if I wanted to do power on and off stalls and steep turns. I told him I wanted to do everything I possibly could. We did it all. I did everything from taxi, takeoff, stalls and steep turns. I didn't land as the pattern was really busy, but I fell in love that day. Flying just felt natural to me. I went home and immediately signed up for ground school and completed it. I'm waiting for my wallet to catch up to my dreams, but hopefully by the end of next year I'll get my PPL. She was a natural in the cockpit. Some people just have a natural feel for it. She's one of them.
This video brought back a lot of memories. It all started with the instructor telling me "see that bridge over there? Fly us there. You have control." I also remember being more than a little timid with the flight controls. One day we were practicing steep turns and I felt one with the plane in a way I had never felt before, channeling my inner Spitfire pilot. My instructor noticed and told me "whatever you had for breakfast today, eat more!"
I absolutely love Jordanna's flavor of "overthinking the theory of flying". Totally get it. 3:3021:08 "what ramp is this?" it's nice seeing you out of your element. 5:48 I suspect you're the only one in the plane who got the Benny Hill reference.
In the process of finishing my Commercial Multi and plan on being a CFI after, I thoroughly enjoy how you teach whether it's other students on your channel or this discovery flight. Great stuff Lewis!
I'm a brand new flight instructor at about 500 hours. My main purpose is time building but I want to give my students the best experience possible while I do. Your videos help me out! Cheers m8!
I had an ex navy harrier pilot who served during the falkans.. he was such a fun guy and got me to do everything but radio. Felt like we've known eachother for years with the banter in the air and thats how it should be. Now we try go up each month in his chipmunk just for a day out =)

Everybody looks drunk the first time they taxi. Or the first several times. Then you go from a direct-steer bird like a Cherokee to a castering nose (Grumman) or bungie cords (Skyhawk) and you're right back to NO SIR OSSIFER I'M NOT DRINKIN I PURMIS
Great discovery flight! Mine was unfortunately nothing like this. What I did get was a guy who was mostly looking at his iPad for traffic, I barely saw him look up while in the air until he took controls for pattern and landing (didn't see anything wrong with that at the time, but now I know), and he gave me a few landmarks to aim for and hit. He did give me a few altitudes to transition to and hold while cruising over the town, but nothing too crazy. I also wasn't able to do any part of the takeoff or taxi, but was fully involved in the pre-flight. I got basically no instruction or explanation during the discovery flight, just "go there", "go to this altitude" type of stuff. During and after the discovery flight I didn't completely understand what I was missing out on, but I was a bit underwhelmed and felt slightly let down. Don't get me wrong, it was still amazing being up in a small aircraft for the first time, but didn't meet expectations as far as the CFI. I also got some disconnected vibes from him and felt like he didn't really care all that much. I ended up going with a different instructor within the same school when I booked by first lesson, and my first lesson was far more involved than this discovery flight, which was great, the new instructor I got was really into it, explained everything well without giving too much information all at once, answered every question I had, spent an extra hour beyond what he needed to after the flight to answer questions after the debrief, and it was a great time. Not much joking around, though, but really friendly. I ended up waiting about 3 months before booking my first lesson, I think if I had an experience more like this I would have been back within days. My biggest takeaway, and something I got from researching fairly thoroughly before getting fully into it: Never be afraid to ask for or find a new instructor.
Sorry to hear about your discovery flight experience. Unfortunately there are a lot of places out there that treat discovery flights as a money making exercise. It’s sad, but true. That’s one of the plethora of reasons that I will never work for a flight school. Discovery flights, in my opinion should not only show the prospective student how cool and amazing it is to fly, but give them a taste of an actual lesson. Let them leave feeling a sense of accomplishment, regardless if they want to continue or not. Flight training is in a sorry state when it comes to flight schools. I’m just glad you went back and got into it even after a poor first experience!
@@LewDixAviation My biggest concern was the "time builders" I kept reading about, but I figured they couldn't all be that bad. What royally pisses me off is that people generally don't have money to throw away on lessons while testing flight instructors, this stuff is expensive! I figured they'd offer me a chance to speak with different instructors and make my own choice, but the school tried to put me with someone in order to keep all instructors schedules even. I think I lucked out with the second instructor being a good fit. For anyone new to aviation and reading this: I'd definitely push to "interview" the instructors before getting started, if they can't do that much for you go somewhere else. It's your money and your time on the line, they get paid either way.
I took to discovery flights, the first I got to be in the air for 1 hour and fly four 40 minutes, the second I got to be in the air for 50 minutes and fly for 20. I had so many delays with the flight itself and I actually prepped 2 planes for flight

This is a far cry from my first lesson, albeit I was 12 years old (2000) and got about 30 hours of instruction in before I was 14. I was never really challenged to do anything other than a couple of 20 degree turns and holding a climb using some weird trim instrument I hardly got to use ;-D. Great channel mate. In regards to my first instructor called Ian Hyatt, he got his CPL revoked for not disclosing a heart attack I believe) about 15 years after first flying with him and after looking on Pprune, found out that after this he came out as being a transgender woman which is fine, I'm not a bigot, I am gay but ffs, that was a lot of info to take in. Now youtube exists and I know how a flying lesson should really be with you Lew as my favourite example. I feel cheated and my parents would too if I told them how rubbish my training was.
Well. Unfortunately instructing is seen as a means to an end. It’s what gets you hours quickly to get to an airline so the good ones are, regrettably few and far between. The social media generation of pilots (mine) is all about “looks” and popularity, when really it should be about the students. It’s a shame. There are good ones out there though!
My instructor is a 7700 hour retired corporate pilot. He doesn't need the time and he doesn't need the money, he just wants to teach me to fly. It is such a blessing to have met him. He's training me to fly in aviation ministry. He just signed me off for the commercial check ride.

I've had 2 discovery flights, several years apart, and neither of them were this instructional. I love the rapport these two had!
