  • You're watching a DIXcovery flight! How I believe Discovery Flights should be. It shouldn't be a money making exercise, it's for the student to get a feel for how the aircraft operates and to have some fun along the way.
    Enjoy the flight!

@@ahmedlamborghini3703 without totaling my log book specifically, im thinking about 20 hours in the plane. I got mine over the course of a year between a full time non aviation job and a family. Lots of solo practice and the instructor checks in to keep your progress going. Then you need three hours logged 2 months before the check ride.

@@ahmedlamborghini3703 yes, they can come to you quickly. You already know how to fly so now your just refining your skill. I took a while because I can only work on aviation part time. Try your best to fly once or twice a week and you'll be signed off in no time.

Excellent Discovery flight Lew! Kate, stick with it! Don't let any time lapse. Do as much training as often as possible and get it down. See there, that is why my flight bag always includes a pair of my own plyers. I've learned over the years that tight oil caps always come back to bite you in the most inconvenient moments, and you can't always guarantee maintenance will be around to lend you tools. Since I fly twins, on occasion I've had the pleasure of mitigating TWO tight oil caps...😂I also routinely carry my own oil funnels as well.

I will say Lewis, that your natural energy and ability to celebrate small victories is something I have always admired. My personality is a little different and it’s more challenging for me to bring genuine excitement to situations that don’t always elicit it naturally so I have to make a bigger effort to recognize those opportunities and force myself to have a more energetic response. None of this is to say that I don’t genuinely feel proud of my students for those small accomplishments, but I’m just not as externally enthusiastic as I’d like to be all the time. 😊🙌🏻

excelllent ethos, its a far cry from my first trial flight - out of 60min flying I had control for about 15mins straight and level. I didn't know any different at the time, but it certainly makes choosing an instructor/school difficult when you aren't getting any instruction.

This is mostly the average kind of discovery flights I try to make as an ultralight FI, except for the stall. I also teach using rudder on the turns, and maybe different angles of banking. If I find the passenger can hold a higher level, I will make him feel the G forces, that's really fun. At the end I will do a touch & go and a 180 power-off final landing, so they understand that with no engine the airplane doesn't fall like a rock.

And the dirtiness is just one very very minor reasons I have my own plane heh. The intro of the wiping down the trim wheel was very disgusting. Though I am sure my trim control is the same but at least it is only from me.
My first flight with my CFI was not really a discovery flight to determine if I liked flying as I grew up flying. My Dad's plane (Decathlon, an aerobatic trainer without flaps and long with being a tailwheel plane) finished the annual after not having one for 17 years as my Dad could not get his medical.
My "discovery" flight had my CFI and I flying the plane from the mechanics airstrip back to my Dad's airstrip. Along the way, we or should I say my CFI wanted to see how well the plane flew upside down. It did just fine except for all the crap that came up off the carpet etc.
When we went out for my first lesson though, my CFI put me in charge of flying the plane. (quick back story, My CFI is younger than my oldest child....) He guided me through each and every step of the way but let me control the plane. The first landing, I went from one side of the runway to the other side multiple times yet he didn't give any input as he told me I had it under control.
I like the way you do your discovery flights. Sink or swim type of deal.
