  • My good friend Gareth (Zero Three Delta, link below) approached me asking about the possibility of giving his Girlfriend a chance to get behind the controls of an aeroplane. I was more than happy to welcome her to the sky as she took control of an aircraft for the first time!
    Enjoy the flight!

    "To climb, we need to outweigh weight. We need to increase lift so that it's [unintelligible] weight."
    In a constant rate climb, lift is equal to weight. A plane climbs due to excess thrust. Lift is greater than weight only when a non-lag VSI would indicate an increasing rate of climb. Once the VSI needle stabalizes, lift is equal to weight. Newton's equation Force = mass*acceleration. If the lift weren't equal to weight in a climb, you'd be accelerating upward, not in a constant rate of climb.

    • @LewDixAviation
      @LewDixAviation  5 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      I agree with you, however when we initially increase AOA for the climb we are increasing lift which initiates it. The constant rate climb comes when the forces reach equilibrium again but that wasn't the point I was trying to make. This was a first flight, I was trying to make everything as simple as possible for her to be able to start a climb. I don't think bringing up Newtons laws would have been the best idea haha. This was the reason for the *DISCLAIMER* at the beginning of the video about how things can come across differently in a video.

      @@LewDixAviation ok, cool. I just like clearing up misconceptions, but it sounds like you knew that and the wording that came to mind on the fly (no pun intended) was tailored more to an intro student.

      aviatortrevor Hahaha Love the pun. Yea man, no I appreciate your comment because I like to be as clear as possible especially in videos. I know my style of putting things across won’t be to everyone’s taste but comments like that help me think of ways to explain things a little better.

      @williamkumley5135 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @The Rocktavius Yes the cost can be a huge detractor. I could have save a fair amount of money if I just started a month earlier. Weather was great during training and I was averaging 3 flights a week so I was progressing great. When it was time for my checkride the weather shifted for winter and went to crap so I ended up rescheduling 5 times, 4 for weather, 1 for maintenance so it ended up taking an extra 5 months. While those delays were happening I was still flying to maintain proficiency so I added about 15 hours in those 5 months. Those hours probably helped but I also know my CFI was confident I was ready 5 months earlier.

    The beautiful thing is that nowadays just about anybody can take a flying lesson and it will cost less than $300. My first time was in a Cessna 172 Skyhawk. I think I was more afraid driving up to the runway and taxing the plane to the runway then I was once it came time to actually rotate and takeoff. A couple of times my CFI looked at me and thought I was about to throw up but fortunately I didn’t.
    I honestly think I would have been more comfortable in an F-16 that I would be in a Cessna Skyhawk because everything I learned about flying I learned in flight simulators from falcon 4.0 to DCS world

    I started PPL training back in February. Due to life and other factors, I didn't train consistently (months between lessons). My instructor quit (not because of me!😅). Also, it just wasn't "clicking" for me. I wondered if I just wasn't cut out to be a pilot.
    I decided to give it another try with a new instructor, and I've been training once a week for the past month. It's finally coming together! I'm making slow but sure progress. My instructor said o was too hard on myself. I decided since this was for fun, and not a career, there was no need to feel like I had to pressure myself to solo in a certain number of hours, etc.
    I had an issue with staring at the instruments instead of outside the airplane, and my instructor patiently told me to knock it off! Still struggling with mukti-tasking, but I'll get there. The thought of soloing still scares the 💩 out of me!

    • @LewDixAviation
      @LewDixAviation  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I used to work with a guy that would scare his students, telling them they are not good enough because at Private Pilot level they had to fly like 'professional Pilots'. Complete and utter garbage! Don't be hard on yourself. Let yourself make mistakes and learn from them. The reason you have the instructor next to you is so you can make mistakes and not kill yourself. They are your safety net and will catch you when you fall. Slowly over time as you build your confidence you will need the instructor less and less.
      You'll get there. Keep plugging away!

      Yes, and it was quite fun. They’ll simulate common errors and you have to catch them and fix them, such as overbanking or bad airspeed control in traffic patterns. As far as dealing with a violent student, one who might try and hijack your aircraft, there was no formal training on that. My previous employer allowed us to carry firearms on their person to work, assuming they had to have a valid license to carry in our state, of course.
