    Hey everyone! In today's video I'm using the Sony A7III to compare 2 standard zoom lenses. We are using the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 G2 vs Samyang 24-70mm f2.8 in a few different portrait photography scenarios. I have unedited 100% crops of the photos we're taking so you can take a closer look at the details. I hope seeing these comparison photos and hearing my opinions can help you out if you're stuck deciding between each of these lenses! Let me know if there are other lens comparison videos you'd like to see.
    These are my complete reviews of each of these lenses as well if you want to see more photo examples:

    Another great comparison review, Julia. It is hard for me to be objective as I own the Tamron ( first edition) and am so used to it . For me the weight of the Samyang would be a big strike against it but both lenses produced very pleasing results.

    Perfect video. Of course I would go for Samyang as it’s a tank and also that 4mm does make a huge difference. Have used 28-75 and it’s seriously not wide enough; neither does 24mm but I have Sony 14mm f/1.8 so not worried much. Thanks heaps from NZ.

    Your review is very enjoyable as always. I agree, you can't go wrong with both of these lenses, but I think I prefer the Tamron over Samyang because of a softer bokeh and slightly sharper image. I don't mind sacrificing 4mm on the wide end, because often times I can still step back if it was not wide enough.

    One bonus thing to note about these lenses is that the Tamron comes with a USB connector built into the lens (for firmware updates and focus adjustments) while with the Samyang you will have to buy the lens dock separately.
    I own the Samyang 85mm 1.4 and I love it but I want a fast zoom lens for my wedding shoots. 85mm is awesome but I feel like a zoom lens would make life a little easier. The f1.4 from the prime lens is a huge plus though so I'm kind of stuck in between.
    I also do street photography and thats maybe one of the reasons I like the Tamron because it's lighter and a bit smaller than the Samyang zoom lens all while giving me similar focal lengths.
    But the Samyang lens is a little cheaper.
    Oh its so hard to choose.
    Thanks for the video Julia. Very helpful.

    • @SayWhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat
      @SayWhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      85mm f1.4 is huge glass. its normal to have slower autofocus-hard to move that glass with power that comes from camera

    • @paiman_
      @paiman_ 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SayWhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat My bad, by fast I meant lower F number (e.g f2.8 or below). In photography terms a "fast" lens means a lens with a wide aperture (like f1.8, f1.4 or even f1.2).
      But you are correct, an 85mm has huge glass elements to move back & forth for fast autofocus.
      I own the Samyang 85mm F1.4 mark 1 version and it's autofocus is pretty speedy. Never had issues with it.
      I may upgrade to Mark II version in the future.

    Both of these lenses look great! They showed really great control under high contrast conditions, which makes them awesome bargains and honestly no-brainer replacements for the Sony GM, which is not only super heavy, but very expensive. Granted, that lens came out a while ago, but it's still priced high. There really isn't much value there for that lens anymore considering the competition. I like the way both of these lenses render as well; they look awesome. As far as focal length goes, having 4 extra mm in a smaller space goes a long way, so if it were me, I'd probably go with the Samyang. Great work as always, Julia! You have a solid team that I don't think gets recognized enough.

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you so much! I would need to do a proper side by side comparison with the GM, but I tend to agree because these 2 lenses in this video have very little cons. They are solid zooms. I'm looking forward to seeing if Sony announce a new GM 24-70 MKII actually. Will be interesting to see how it is!

    • @gavinfulton1361
      @gavinfulton1361 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@juliatrotti oh, that 24-70 MkII is totally happening. I think Sony knows they need to, and with the fact that it's currently a couple hundred bucks off might be a good indicator that's it's going to happen. If they can shave off the weight like they did the 70-200, and have some other quality of life upgrades, it could be a lucrative choice, but it's got to hit hard and not be crazy expensive (unlikely) to stay competitive.

    I´m using my very old Tamron EF 28-75mm f/2.8 (the version from the early 2000s) as a walk around lens and I wish the new one would be available for canon RF. For this type of walk around lense size and weight are crucial so I would go for the Tamron. For Portrait sessions I mainly use my Samyang RF 85mm f/1.4.

    it was a really good lens for the short time that I had it- was a bit
    heavy though- but I liked it a lot. image quality and lens performance
    were excellent... however, there are two really huge problems with it:
    first, is that the mounting plate is screwed into four small plastic
    posts- this is all that is holding your lens onto your camera. so let's
    say you trip and fall and you bang your lens on the ground (which I've
    done with my sony 28-70mm kit lens- but it still works perfectly), or if
    your tripod with your camera falls, as mine did, the plastic posts will
    simply break on impact and your lens will just snap straight off your
    camera. the second problem is trying to get that repaired. it will not
    go well because repair shops cannot get any parts for your lens, and
    Samyang has only one location in the US to fix the things covered by
    their warranty... so ultimately you'll learn that you've bought a $1000
    disposable lens... a real shame because I would have easily replaced it
    with another. Instead, though I'm gonna miss the 4mm on the wide end, I
    got the Tamron.

    Tamron is sharper yet Samyang has a bit better skin render. The thing with those 2 is the starting focal length. 24mm is much more useful that people think. If you do real estate photography, you can take the majority of those pictures with the 24mm and not with the 28. The thing is that those 2 lenses have exactly the same price. Contrast and sharpness can be added to match the look of the tamron. But the those -4mm can not "fixed" in post. Tamron is a better travel, all around lens and Samyang is more "useful" for scenarios like real estate. At the end of the day, they are both wins for pros or not that want a 24-70ish 2,8 lens and don't want to spend a liver without gaining any major advantage.

    Nice video, but with one big thing you didn't even mention. The MAIN difference between those two lenses is the construction.
    Samyang is parfocal construction (there comes the weight and size) as oposit to any other similar lens.
    Simply put - if you focus with the Samyang, the object stays in focus even if you zoom in or out.
    If someone is unsure which one of those to get, that may be a huge deciding point.

      I would need to do a side by side photoshoot comparison to be able to give you a proper answer! But both these lenses here are absolutely great. I also have a video with the GM 24-70 with unedited photos if you wanted to take a look at those files. We actually had pretty similar lighting to this day. I'm 100% stuck in the same position right now.
      There is a temporary sale going on for the Samyang (I have 20 hours to decide before the offer expires) for 100 Euros off original 899 euros.
      The Tamron G2 also has a 100 euro offer but I have 20 days which is plenty of time.
      I already own a Samyang 85mm 1.4 prime lens but I really prefer smaller and lighter lenses, all while wanting the 24mm also.
      ahh so hard to choose.

      @@paiman_ which one did u end up going for? and how is it ig?

    • @paiman_
      @paiman_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Inzerino I ended up not going for the Samyang just because of the weight (and size but mainly the weight).
      I thought long and hard. I just can't handle that much weight while walking around (I do street photography and wedding photography).
      28mm is wide enough for me but it would've been nice if I had that extra focal length on the wide end.
      I'm gonna go for the Tamron as I heard (and seen) that its a bit sharper and slightly better autofocus (very slightly).
      And on another note, This is Tamron's 2nd gen lens so they have more "experience" if you wanna call it when it comes to zoom lenses, while this is Samyang's first zoom lens.
      Also, if 28mm isn't wide enough, 24mm most likely won't be wide enough either. You're better off going for a 12mm or an 18mm prime (or a super wide zoom lens).
      Samyang normally makes smaller & lighter lenses compared to other manufacturers, and that's their selling point/advantage over the other companies but I don't know why they couldn't manage to make this one lighter than the competition.
      It's literally the heaviest 24-70mm lens out right now.
      I have the Samyang 85mm f1.4 prime lens and its much lighter & smaller compared to other 85mm lenses from other companies.
      I also like the fact that I don't have to buy a separate lens station for Tamron.
      Overall I think if you can deal with 28mm, Tamron is the way to go.

    • @paiman_
      @paiman_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Inzerino Glad I could help :) and for video, from what I've seen of the G2, I really think its one of the best video lenses too because of the many focal lengths it offers you.
      The f2.8 is plenty for video (since in cinematography, the lowest aperture they use is f2.8 based on my personal research). They might go lower but if you notice in most films, the depth of field is not as shallow as f1.8 or f1.4 even in low light. I know you might not want to make films with the lens but if it works for professional films, it will definitely work for othet projects too.
      Also f2.8 is perfect because it is a good balance between subject separation, low light ability and autofocus performance (too shallow depth of field can hinder autofocus performance because of the razon thin dof).
      But yes, the 28-75mm is a great "standard" zoom range even for video/filmmaking.

  • @oscarshen6855
    @oscarshen6855 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I think the weight is the decisive factor here, over 1kg is kind of too much for a standard zoom by 2022 standard. More and more lens makers will be moving to much lighter 28-70/28-75 lenses. If 28mm isn't wide eough for you, then 24mm isn't wide enough either, you need a dedicated wide angle lens.

    Well, between these two brands I have quite a preconceived opinion, unfortunately. :D
    I have had 3 Samyang lenses and none of them could really convince me. The 35/2.8 wasn't my take in terms of colors and handling, the 50/1.4 II was very weak in close-up sharpness and this 24-70 suffers from a lot of CA in the corners and it's like REALLY heavy to carry around.
    With Tamron, on the other side, I have had nothing but great experiences with all the lenses I've used from them. The 35/2.8 is my main prime, the 28-200 is the best allround-zoom I've had in my hands, the 24/2.8 is great, too, and the 70-300 is a lot better than Sony's expensive 30-700 G OSS. This 28-75 is about what I would call the GM-standard for people on a budget which tend to prefer lightweight lenses. In terms of lens/value for money it is very hard to beat this.

    I’m using Samyang 24-70 lens. And now I’m going to sell it and buy Tamron 28-75mm lens. The main reason is weight. When you make long shoot day or you doing street photography Samyang lens becomes very unusable. And after 10 minutes it was impossible to hold camera and use it. Samyang lens is really heavy 😂
