    Great job Tamron, this looks like the standard zoom with best optical performance for Sony FE. Adding on top of that pretty compact dimension and reasonable price, it's hard not to be fully impressed with this lens.

    Just go back 6 or 7 years and look how limited the choice of a f/2.8 standard zoom was and how high the prices were (especially adjusted to inflation). Nowadays the number of options is amazing. Almost as amazing as these new generation lenses.

    I have this lens on my Sony a7riii and love it! About the same quality of picture as the GM lens but much, much cheaper. Of course there are trade-offs, but it doesn't destroy the bargain of this lens. I've done some event photography with this lens and the 70-180 lens and everything has come out sharp and professional looking. As always, love your videos!

    Hey Chris, I have followed you since I started really getting into photography over 4 years ago. Thanks for all the very detailed reviews. It has helped my photography journey a lot. Starting with a a6400 and now an a7iv, I look to your reviews over all of the others (I watch theirs also). You make the videos so the results, just speak for themselves. Thanks for another great video and after watching many reviews I think I will save some money and get this lens over the sony gmii. For the price this lens just looks unbeatable, and size and weight are big factors for me. Thanks for all the help man. Cheers.

    Hi Chris, I'm just wondering whether you were using AF-S or AF-C in the focusing test. If you were using AF-S, then that could explain the focus hunting, because Sony cameras prioritize contrast detection AF in AF-S, and phase detection AF in AF-C. This is why Sony cameras tend to focus much faster with much less hunting in AF-C, and I never use AF-S on my Sony cameras for that very reason.

    • @hiawrj
      @hiawrj 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      He is using AF-S and always have been doing so. So all his AF tests have never been comparable with others.
      In af-c af just snaps and locks on. In af-s it always does the little hunt at the end of acquiring focus.

    • @OccultDemonCassette

      Doesn't AF-C use up battery power much quicker?

    • @networm64
      @networm64 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      It's for several times now people pointing out this to him for Sony cameras. Even though he has seen it but still insisting on AF-S which almost no one else uses. Probably that's how he finds Canon has the world's best AF currently as he said once!

    • @OccultDemonCassette
      @OccultDemonCassette 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@networm64 sounds like sony needs to improve their AF-S mode.

    • @hiawrj
      @hiawrj 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OccultDemonCassette af-s is for super precision on non moving subject when camera isn't movinh either. So in that sense it's fine. But phase detection just works so good these days across sony, canon and nikon cameras.
      Problem isn't how it works, problem is that people dont know how it works. 😜

    This thing is blazingly sharp (regardless of price point) but for under 1k I can forgive the lack of VC. I’m really running low on reasons to stay in Canon’s system..only 12/20 fps raw and the 800 f11 is keeping me put.

      I've had it for roughly 6 months and have had no issues with dust and find it performs great. I even used it for a wrestling event and came away impressed with the focus performance on my a7c.

    Hi,Thanks for reviewing the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 Art Mark 1 & Tamron 28-75 f2.8 G2 lens for Sony camera..I can notice 1-stop brightness between these two lenses and Tamron is brighter & less vignette than Sigma. Do these variations occur since you used different cameras with huge sensor improvement results in showing Tamron a bright lens? Could you please test Sigma 24-70 mark 1 on the Sony A7riii camera? I decided to get Sigma 24-70 mark 1 as it has the widest focal length and better build quality than Tamron.

    The AF system on your Canon R5 blows your current Sony A7R III out of the water.
    Sony needs to send you a new camera. The AF system on the A7 IV is way snappier and would make their camera/lens ecosystem look good.

    Christopher, or others!!!
    I can use some advice at this point, or at least a share of experience, that perhaps restricts me from overthinking things, and simplifying....
    Not having IS, 28mm vs 24mm, Focus breathing, slight focus hunting, not par focal, 76mm thread not 77mm(not really a negative like the others)...Well Christopher...maybe a used Canon 24-70 L2 that sells around $1200 would be a better choice.
    But being a Sony mount, I guess it maybe a good option vs Sony brand. I tend to want to buy Canon mount as it is my much preferred body, but cant make sense of upgrading from a A7r3, and a 5DM3 or 4 to a $3500-$4000 Canon R5 body. So I tend to want to buy Canon with an adapter.
    Recent Samyang lenses with such prices and use quality, I have loved the 85 and 35mm for the Sony, so it looks like I am leaving the Canon more and more behind...
    But, in a kicking and screaming manner...as each time I hold it, I miss my Canon.
    Each time I go into the settings I miss my Canon,
    Each time the buttons get depressed on the flat Sony body, I miss the Canon,
    Then I worry about water/snow on the body, I miss the Canon.
    Holding the A7R3 body alone is a case of hand gymnastics and yoga while getting poked. I use a LBracket, which helps, but nothing really satisfactory.
    The ports, mem card door, the battery door/lock, all feel significantly more robust on the Canon(and perform better as I had to pay for a $900 repair on the Sony for those things).
    Also something I dont hear much mentioned, the lens mount on the Sony has a bit of play, notice when using the Metabones adapter. The A7r2 which I had for years had a LOT of play, and the A7R3 is better, but I have to grip/twist my lenses, particularly the 70-200 weight lens to get the electronics to engage and AF...otherwise it loses Fstop reading and AF!!!
    At the end of the day it is a horrible camera body with such a great sensor....
    so due to the files I get, and the things I have to deal with, I just kick and scream, yet deal with the Sony. I am kind of jealous for those who just drop $4000-4500 for a new R5 :-)...LOL.
    Lets see: Sell the A7R3 for about $1700 or so, (I have a old PhaseOne medium format that wont even sell at this point, lol). then keep the 5DM3 for backup....as it wont sell for much. Buy a used R5 for about $3500.(about $1800 out of pocket is not be so bad).
    I have Sony Mounts:
    Sony 55mm, 1.8
    Samyang 85mm and 35mm, 1.4/1.8
    Voitlander Leica mount adapted15mm M3, w
    Laowa 15mm,4 Tilt/Shift (Very little use since the Voitlander compact size), maybe good for product. (but the Canon 24-70 does most of this on basic products.
    ___ ___ ___
    Canon Mount lenses I have had longer and have gotten more use, so they are pretty well used condition, they can use a repair/reconditioning:
    Canon 24-70mm L Mark1 (can use an update, but functioning)
    Canon 70-200mm L IS mark1 (can use an update, AF often sticks or not functioning, but I manage).
    Sigma 150-600mm Sport version(pretty new condition, yet 90% fun moon photo use)
    Canon 100mm Macro USM (hardly used)
    Canon 180mm L Macro (hardly used)

    Very good. This lens seemed to be sharper than the Sigma 28-80. Do you agree with my opinion?

      @JeanV1986 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it is probably the sharpest standard zoom lens for the Sony system, even sharper than the Sony GM24-70.

    a7c manual mode,sometimes aparture gets locked, don't allow to change.. need to remove lense or play with buttons to make it work
    Anyone else faced problem?
    Also service no one talk. In India it's useless as they don't respond to emails, don't pickup calls, their online form submission don't work

  • @AintThatRich

    Question is, this or the 28-200 offering from Tamron? I perceive this as having generally better sharpness, less fringing and obviously it has F2.8 through the range.. but the versatility of 28-200 is enticing.

    I've just watched the tests of this lens, Canon 24-70 2.8 rf and Nikon Z 24-70 f2.8 S lenses done by Chris at 4k resolution. I am very surprised! This lens is slightly sharper than the Canon and Nikon, has the same soft bokeh quality, has the same mimimal focus breathing, apparently sharper at close distance than the other two. Flare control is better than Canon and as good as Nikon. However, this lens is obviously lighter and the price is really a STEAL in comparison with the other two lenses! Congrats to Sony users who have yet another great standard zoom lens to choose from. The only downsides are the very obvious CA (worse than Nikon, almost the same as the Canon) and the lack of 24mm.

    • @chanjeff4406
      @chanjeff4406 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      By the way I should add that this lens is obviously better than the Sony's own 24-70 GM lens. Just to be fair

      Hmm.. I have always had inferior focusing on Tamron lenses particularly their 24-70mm 2.8 and I could swear the quality degenerated over time. I am still happy with their 70-200mm 2.8 G2, however you always take a chance with 3rd party lenses migrating with new camera systems like the 24-70 2.8 G2 being incompatible with Nikon Z cameras. I will also say that I think the Nikon 24-70mm is sharper in the corners, better CA and lens flare.
      That said if I shot Sony I'd probably still add this to my bag, my hands just don't agree with their ergonomics.

    This lens focuses very fast and almost no hunting at all. I think hunting is because of AF-S mode. Pleasy try AF-C mode

    Greetings you too! 28mm is not fun, but workable if you have wide angle lens. I wish it were 28-105 though
    Btw is apsc 2.8 same bright as ff one? Or its more like 4.2

      Same brightness, less bokeh

    • @GeekRedux
      @GeekRedux 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You'll get the same brightness with f/2.8 on FF and ASP-C, but the depth of field on APS-C will be about the same as FF f/4.5.

    • @Donbros
      @Donbros 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DennisDeMennis_98 ahh okay, so something like sigma 14-24 f2.8 and zve10 is kinda ok mixing (for streaming / photos) because you still get quite enuogh of light. I am always wanting to buy ff lens and apsc b cam (because cheap) because I have ff camera so I want to use it from time to time on that too

    • @elcano091
      @elcano091 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      At first I thought so but no, it lets in the same amount of light, but what feels different is the amount of out of focus background and maybe ISO performance. Remember that a APSC sensor is like cropping an image from a high resolution FF sensor. Same goes with lenses design for APSC; a 16mm prime lens is always a 16mm lens -a FF sensor will show more cuz it's bigger, but a APSC sensor shows less cuz it's smaller, showing only a 24mm field of view. Hope this was helpful.

    • @kjltube
      @kjltube 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@elcano091 I would add that vignetting is vastly reduced when shooting on crop sensors so actually the light transmission is optimal, sampling the best part of the lens in many aspects.
