    This is one of the best videos on the Abxylute I've seen, so congrats. This thing has become my favorite in-home streaming device because of the size and quality of the screen, quality of the Wi-Fi connection and general feel of the controls - and I say this compared to the G Cloud, Steam Deck, ROG Ally and Ayn Loki. The sticks aren't great for shooters that require precision aiming, but for everything else they're fantastic. If you want light, compact and 7" screen for Moonlight/Steam Link there's nothing better at the moment.

    Streaming high end emulation and PC games is a VERY cost effective option. Streaming to an RP3+, the ABXYLUTE, or even just a powerful smart phone with a good controller can be an amazing experience. I have found it also has the added bonus side effect of centralizing your game saves. If you stream all your games from the same system, then all your saves will be there. You could also build a lighter duty gaming PC that's maybe $300-500 and ONLY runs 1080p. Then you can port all your games and emulators into steam or retro-bat, or launchbox and make everything a nice arcade style front end. I personally use a combination of Launchbox, Parsec, and a collection of emulators, roms, and PC games to make a rather enjoyable experience.

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes definitely! It's a WAY better experience playing Wii or Switch or PS3 upscaled to 1080p on a computer that can actually handle it. The latency is a non-issue because it works so well locally. No reason to buy super expensive emulation devices if you mostly play in your own home.

    I actually have a modded Switch running on Lineage OS just for local/cloud streaming purposes. But with the amount of time I spent to set it all up, plus not to mention the total cost of the entire project (Second hand Switch Lite + SD Card + Modification services) , I'd say the Abxylute is one of the best bang-for-the-buck remote play device you can get. It has a better screen and battery life than the switch lite, and I also think its form factor is a great selling point.
    I'd absolutely grab this device in the near future.

  • @Kuwagatamushi
    @Kuwagatamushi ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I was looking into the G-Cloud for streaming from my (headless) gaming PC, but the Abxylute is definitely a good alternative, considering the price. I definitely prefer Moonlight to Steam Link due to latency issues I still experience on the latter app, even with my Steam Deck. Combined with Sunshine, I can broadcast to as many screens as I want, as long as I have CPU cores to spare.
    Great video, as always.

  • @BandoidView
    @BandoidView ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I completely agree with you on this. I don't do any streaming using GeForce Now or Xcloud or anything like, that but streaming locally means that when I'm playing a real-time game (like Diablo IV), I don't have to worry about whether i'm going to need to switch devices during my session.
    I use this device's more expensive direct competitor (bought it on sale) but it irks me that mine doesn't have hall sticks yet this one does and is cheaper.
    The Steam Deck works just as well but the screen is not as good. The ROG ally also works and has a great screen but, because it's running Windows, it still burns through the battery way, way sooner than this thing will.
    Edit: One more thing. If Steam Link works that well for you, that's great. For my part I find that I get significantly better performance using Moonlight. Supposedly it's no longer officially supported by Nvidia but I stream from a Windows 10 computer using a GTX1080 and... well, so far so good!

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don't feel like you're missing out on the sticks. I think the sticks on the G Cloud are better than these even though these are hall sticks.
      I've tried moonlight vs steam link in the past and I don't see any difference. I prefer the native app options on Steam Link. One thing moonlight does that steam link doesn't is automatically detect your games from other launchers, so it saves having to set up custom non-steam games.

    • @BandoidView
      @BandoidView ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TechDweeb I don't bother with launching individual games directly using Moonlight. It's more trouble than it's worth. For multiple reasons, it's far more simple and effective to map to the game launchers themselves (Epic, EA, Steam) and then launch the games from their respective launchers. Also, the touch pad mode works great with Moonlight so I just combine that with having the accessibility (on-screen) keyboard parked as an application on my task bar and that lets me do everything I need to.
      Anyway, I agree that Steam Link's native app options are a significant consideration so if you don't see a performance difference then you should definitely stick with it.

      Yes actually! You can use Steam Link to stream games from your home PC to any mobile device (I tried it on my Abxylute using a tethered phone connection). Not a bad price point for what it does. For someone like me who has an PS5, but also has an Xbox One with gamepass. This looks to be more versatile for game streaming than say the PlayStation portal which is very limited. I like added android functions here and the screen size for console gaming for when im away from the TV. Lite emulation is a nice bonus with this chipset but definitely not the level of performance I would get out of my RP3+.

    It's very interesting as a device - I can't decide whether I want a Steam Deck more or less than the Abxylute though. I have a desktop (5900x, rtx3070, 64gb, 2tb NVME) and I have an HTPC (3700x, rtx4060 which I won from Nvidia, 16gb, 1.25tb NVME) for gaming in the living room. I also have a laptop (5800h, rtx3060, 24gb, 1.5tb NVME). My Steam library is well populated with older games I still want to play, as well as Epic, EA, Ubisoft launcher games. I travel for work a fair bit, and sometimes when away I just want to pick up a game without all the fiddling, and to maximise battery by lowering power draw & temps ... probably games like Fallout 3/NV, Disco Elysium, Civilisation VI, Quake 2 (remaster) etc.
    I think I want the Steam Deck a little bit more due to being fully independent, but I can really see loving the Abxylute as an at-home device for playing local-streaming from my desktop when the entire family is watching something together on the TV that I'm mildly interested in (but would rather dual screen).

      you'd be an idiot not to get the steam deck

    • @evshrug
      @evshrug ปีที่แล้ว

      I suppose it’s a question about what you care most about.
      In favor of the Steam Deck, it may save electricity because you’re not running your full PC, it would be more reliable when traveling because high-speed internet is not always available on the go (as TechDweeb spoke about his Starlink internet), and of course there’s the whole novelty aspect. Lastly, the Steam Deck is also more versatile, with a large community around it as benefitting the popular “winning team,” and people are constantly plumbing the depths of the hardware’s capabilities and accessories, and it’s already proven for a year that it has staying power with first party support.
      On the other hand, the Abxylute is a purpose-built device with its hardware carefully selected for streaming. The screen does color better, the sticks, triggers, and battery will be more durable, and that durability might actually matter because the Abxylute might outlast a few Desktop PC upgrades. The Steam Deck was released in February 2022, and already people are clamoring for a better screen, better processor, longer lasting battery, eGPU support, a smaller enclosure that is easier to fit in travel luggage/messenger bag, while the Abxylute has double to quadruple the battery runtime (That 8hr quote is probably more reliable, as the Steam Deck’s runtime varies based on the demands of the game) and the frame rate/graphics quality can be upgraded as easily as upgrading your PC.
      I think the Steam Deck is really cool - more of a “console” or “toy to tinker with,” if you know what I mean - but considering the gear you have already I would get the Abxylute if I was you. You already have a powerful laptop for travel; it’s hard for me to imagine a situation where you could use the Steam Deck where you couldn’t have the better experience on your laptop 🤷‍♂ Meanwhile, your desktop/htpc gear is only current or one generation old, it’s hard for me to imagine that you would not quickly wish the Steam Deck was more powerful. If streaming interests you at all, you should [download Moonlink on your phone/tablet and see if you like streaming with a controller to try before you buy, then…] seriously consider a lightweight 8hr streaming handheld that would give you full-fat graphics settings/framerates. However, if you were ME, where I don’t own a “current” gaming PC and I just use a Mac Mini dedicated for work and consoles (like PS5) for playing games, you could make a strong argument that a Steam Deck or similar handheld gaming PC would provide me with access to gaming I wouldn’t have otherwise.

    In a span of 2 months I had 2 units both defective and I’m shipping it out again for a full refund both units couldn’t stay on for not even 3 mins or less than that it would just keep restarting even with a charged battery.
    Also the problem with this thing is it’s from china for me it took maybe almost 3 weeks to get mines each time customer support has been helpful throughout the emails but 2x in a row isn’t justified for a 3rd time replacement

    • @TechDweeb

      Yes. There is a protocol called WakeOnLan where you can wake a computer using a magic packet over a network. I use this to wake my PC when I'm away from home. You could use that to wake a PC and then start streaming without touching the device.

    Love the way you keep up the joke of the name. “Xy” as in xylophone for those who didn’t know, so absolute (ab zy lute). It’s a decent console that can actually run a fair amount of local games and emulators as well. Would have been nice to have a bit more grunt to run all PSP games though. I still think the Odin 2 is the better option for streaming and emulation in the same console even with the smaller screen. It’s not much more money, either.

    Until this video, I didn't realize that Steam Link was purely software and not dongle like Chromecast and suchlike.
    Not that this knowledge helps me much since my phone is kinda crap, being long and thin, but it's still nice to know. And who knows? Maybe someday I'll have a tablet or something to make this knowledge actually useful. :P

      If I had a “pc master race” super powerful gaming machine, I would pick this Abxylute to stream.
      Other scenario, the one that’s true for my situation, I would use a Steam Deck or other independent handheld because I don’t play games on my PC (I have a Mac).
      I sort of have a halfway solution right now… yes, I have an M2 Pro Mac Mini, but I have a PS5 and Anbernic RG505. I kinda wish I had the Retroid Pocket R2S or Flip instead, with analog triggers and HDMI/Bluetooth for an ad-hoc co-op gaming machine at a friend’s house, BUT my current handheld is theoretically pretty great for streaming most games from my PS5 (I haven’t tried it, but I imagine racing games and some of the puzzles in Spiderman 2 would be hard to beat with digital triggers) and it can natively/independently play years of retro gaming content on emulators and Android games.

    • @evshrug
      @evshrug ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s probably one of those things where even if maybe they could add it in the future, Abxylute wouldn’t talk about it unless they felt they intended to do it and could do it in the near future. I admit the thought hadn’t occurred to me though; the handheld is already a video output, if I wanted a big screen output I would just use the PC itself… and if I wanted to play on TV, there are tons of cheaper AndroidTV options out there that could do Steam Link or Moonlight (I actually have a NVIDIA Shield). I mean, lots of features and options is cool, and it is interesting that the G-Cloud added that feature (I’d like to try it with XR video glasses!), but if a Roku could do the same thing for less than the price difference between the Abxylute and G-Cloud, then I think it’s not a big detractor. Just a purpose-built device!

    It is a shame that the general retro game handheld market is just now catching up to the Gpd XD from 2014 ... Except the GPD XD has a much nicer form factor (it stole the form factor of the Nintendo 3ds xl) and is more powerful (I mainly use it for Minecraft and Terraria)

    I personally am Not into game rentals. Even when Blockbuster Video was around.
    I never personally enjoyed Game rentals. I always preferred to own my games. That way, I
    could play them anytime I wanted to. Without a return date or late fee. I bring that up because,
    playing "cloud" games aka, someone else owns your games and can take them from you anytime
    they want and don't have to refund you. Local streaming is cool. I am cool with local streaming, provided
    you have the money to buy and assemble a PC capable of playing the games you want to stream. This for
    me is a fail outside of the screen. Nice screen.

      I follow you. I’m actually in that situation, because I have a Mac and no gaming PC (and just a seasonal job while hunting for something that pays well). I would add that I like to compartmentalize work and play on different devices so I’m not tempted to lose productivity.
      However, I could see a hardcore PC gaming enthusiast getting a lot out of this, maybe even more than a Steam Deck. Because unlike a Steam Deck, you can upgrade a desktop PC’s components over time (and stream it to a lite client handheld like this Abxylute). Even if you could upgrade the performance of the handheld (like a RoG Ally with an eGPU), it’s more optimal performance & cost to just upgrade your “main system,” and use a streaming accessory for the “sometimes” you feel like gaming away from your best setup.

      My local network isn't great. I am limited by a 50mb ethernet-to-coax adapter setup (my house was already wired for coax). I'm connected over the 5ghz connection, but it's limited to 50 megabit, and it still works amazing.
