  • WARNINGS:
    About three minutes of just talking at the front end. If you just want to hear the playing skip about the first three minutes.
    I crank this amp up, so if you turn up to hear me talking, be prepared to quickly turn the volume down when I play.
    Just a guitar and the amp. No pedals. Guitar is a bone stock 2010 Gibson Les Paul Studio with 490R and 498T. Cab is a Marshall 1960A with G12T75.
    Audio unfortunately is iPhone. All I have with video. I hope you can get the general idea.

    This amp, for a Marshal, has a lovely clean sound that goes on much further than a Plexi, JCM 8 or 900, even the DSL series and from my standpoint, this is great because although we all love both high and low gain Marshal tones the clean sound is often lost with any decent amount of volume. The gain is nicely low gain rather than high gain and is, to my ears, quite Plexi like.
    Nice video, Sean, thanks for the upload.

      Its a poor mans Plexi-sorta. The Marshall SV20H is no doubt the true Plexi tone, but at nearly 3x the price.

    This is probably one of the best demo videos for the origin! Better than what Marshall even put out there. Thank you for using a Lester for the demo, that’s what I think we all wanted to hear. I’m really digging the plexi-ish tones out of this amp. I had a 4 hole 100 watt for years, but I sold it because it’s just not practical for me now. This might just be the ticket!

      Good honest demo man. I've been recently eyeing the 20 watt version. I believe they had some small fx loop issues at launch, but these amps seem to be the 'tamed" Plexi fans have always wanted.

    I know these arn't made for metal with tight low end and stuff like that; But I wonder if they would work for that purpose? I was looking at one of these for a kind of multi genre amp. What are your thoughts on that @sean kerns?

    • @SeanKerns
      @SeanKerns  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, certainly out of the box, it is not a metal amp. What it is, however, is a really, really good pedal platform. So, to that extent, I think, paired with the right pedal(s), it could do nearly anything.

    I have the same amp. Loving it. Here the thing about the power scaling switch... I don’t notice in your video or from my own experience that switch between modes offers a noticeable difference in amp volume. I notice a difference in tube saturation and feel while playing. I believe at the lowest setting the amp has less clean headroom and more drive. Highest setting gives the most clean headroom. Would you agree? (I have the same Blackstar ht50 as well.. :)

    • @SeanKerns
      @SeanKerns  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's hard to hear on the video, but in the room, there is a small audible difference from high to mid power, and a really noticeable drop from mid to low power. I get about the same volume on high with the master at about 1, as I get on low with the master more like 6 or 7.

    • @SeanKerns
      @SeanKerns  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      mark mc myn The gain that you hear in the demo is pretty much what it is capable of. For classic rock that isn’t too over driven, it would be just fine. For anything more, you would need a pedal.

      @@SeanKerns I've got a fender blues junior with a cannibis rex speaker and I run this with the master volume on full and use the gain for volume control. When Duane Allman,Dickey Betts,and Clapton used Marshall's it was great tone.I would like a more aggressive sound,but am a bit torn as to getting a fender princeton/deluxe reverb or jump to a marshall.I live in a town far away from a nearby city,and our music store hasn't any of the amps I mentioned.

    • @SeanKerns
      @SeanKerns  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@markmcmyn8967 If you're after that tone, my first suggestion would be a Marshall plexi reissue, a model 1959 or 1987. This would do a passable job, though, especially if the volume needed to get that sound out of a plexi is problematic.

    • @SeanKerns
      @SeanKerns  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's not a whole lot of clean headroom, regardless of power setting. It just isn't designed to be a "clean" amp. That said, at lower gain and volume settings, it sounds a lot to me like a Superlead, which is pretty mid heavy compared to a Fender, and less what I would call "clean", than "slightly dirty". It starts to break up pretty quickly as the volume goes up.

      The volume difference between the power settings was much more noticeable in the room than the phone captures, unfortunately. It was just a matter of manufacturers started putting them on as a request, people thought they were important additions, people started thinking they were integral, so they kept them on by popular demand.... But it's no worry, you could just turn your guitar volume down...... Or turn the master volume down.... Or just switch it off and back on again, if you really have to?? :-/
