I've been watching a lot of Marshall Origin videos and this is absolutely the best demo I've ever heard.
Thankyou so much. Recording chain was simple so it should be a good representation of the amp.
I agree 100%. He did a fantastic job of showing what these awesome amps are capable of.
I have to agree, between this and Andertons. I’m convinced for that classic Marshall sound on budget, can’t go wrong for a wide range of music. Definitely looking to obtain an Origin 50H and 4x12 in time.
Fully agree. Great job Leon
@@LeonTodd Thanks for the demo! I just bought one! fingers crossed, an hoping it kills with my Bogner Blue pedal. Figure I can have it tuned a bit in need be cuz if I were to design the perfect Marshall it would pretty much have all what this amp does! I have a Vintage/Modern 50w and absolutely luv that one save for the size of it!
The origin has its own voice . It had it's own unique twist on the vintage sound .
Agreed, I quite like it as someone who has owned several different Marshall models over the years, beginning with a 100w plexi in 1969.
Great video. In my opinion this is the most comprehensive and objective review of the origin 50 head that I’ve seen on TH-cam. What’s refreshing is that a professional gigging musician has put it through its paces and shown the wide range of sounds available with or without pedals. Thank you Leon for the great content.
Much appreciated, that's always the goal with these
Great vid! Loving my Origin 50! The fact so many people are modding this head because they're not getting the sound they want tells me they bought the wrong one in the first place.
Really good amp, what tends to get overlooked by those looking for a certain 'Marshall Sound' is just how beautiful the cleans are. With some reverb and tremolo in the FX I can get some real vintage 50s sounds. It is the most musical sounding amp I've ever had.
That's great to hear my 50C is on the way and I recently bought a trem/reverb pedal despite my old amp having reverb just because I found it so cheap. So this will be handy. And I always thought Marshalls had beautiful cleans, very warm and lively, maybe not as sparkly as a Fender but still very beautiful. Remember the JTM was basically a Tweed Bassman with British components and a few minor tweaks and the Plexi was pretty similar, different tubes, more power and solid state rectifier instead of tube but still pretty much a Made in UK Fender amp. That was the idea, Jim Marshall was constantly sold out of Fender amps in his shop and needed something local in large quantities. The rest is history.
The intro to "Lay it Down" is awesome. Love that riff
I think you have nailed it on the description of where this amp sits, between a JTM and a 1987X. As a pedal platform amp, I think the Origin is best used with just boost pedals and not OD or distortion pedals. Too much pedal gain can get too muddy. I think the key to this amp is to think early plexi tones and leave it at that. Trying to get more modern tones is just not going to happen very well. If you want plexi to modern tones then just get a DSL. The DSL on the classic gain ch with pedals will cover a lot more ground than the Origin. The Origin has it's own voicing and it does that thing well.
That breakdown is exactly what I've been looking for, want the DSL but this thing is intriguing, you just confirmed the dsl would do what I thought it would. Thanks!
@@dustinscott5628 Agree entirely. I bought a DSL40 just before Christmas after putting it head to head agains the Origin 50. I went in wondering which to buy and got stuck deciding which to buy first. The DSL won out purely because it suited the repertoire better but I loved the responsiveness of the Origin. It definitely works best without trying to drive it too hard. The pedals can do the overdrive/distortion but just cranking the Origin seems to turn it fizzy. Back off a little, ride the volume control on the guitar for dynamics and it is a belting amp with a real character of its own. Let saving up commence!
Nailed it with that comment man.
Yes! I agree that the Origin is great with boost pedals, it sounds amazing with the Schaffer Replica pedal. Ever since I got the amp, I've fell in love with it lol, I got the 50W combo version and replaced the stock speaker to a G12-65 Heritage speaker and it sounds beautiful. I also placed wheel casters on it and it rock 'n’ rolls perfectly lol
So you wouldn't recommend using the Revv G3 nor Revv G4 with this?
Stargazer! Rainbow Rising is one of the greatest rock albums ever.
Oh yeah!!
@@LeonTodd OH YES
Can I get a oHhh yAah?
Ive done a few gigs now with the Origin 20:
Its a great amp for smaller venues where the mid voltage setting is perfect to keep the stage volume down, while still having enough grunt to sit in the mix.
Its a great little amp with heaps of possibilities to experiment with pedals and the good thing is, there is no noise or hiss even if you crank up the gain.
Well worth buying.
I find I have to run it at full power even at small gigs. Depends on style of music I suppose
so no hiss ?sold...as for gigs ,if y playin a big pub ,theres usually a front of house, and just mic up, s no front of house the 50 with 212 is gunna do the job ..no hiss?thats why i i am not happy with this katana i got ,used to have a stage rig but it was too big ,heavy and loud enough for a stadium..
dude...thank you SOOO much for including the speaker demo...imminently the most helpful thing here for me....great review
Playing 'Rainbow' lets me know exactly what I need to know about this amp. Thank you man. I'll bet it sounds really 'authentic' with a BSM pedal \m/
Great video, Leon, thanks! I have the Origin 50 Combo with a 75wt Creamback…and I'm using it as a pedal platform. I've got 10 amps that would be considered better by most, but as a grab-and-go for rehearsal and sit-ins, it's very, very cool.
i need this and an sg to play saxon and ac/dc
I'll keep on loving Rainbow till the end. But basically only the albums with Dio because
>Dio.
Also perfect track selection all across the board.
If you can get a musical distortion out of a tube amp without diode clipping isn't that all we want.
I have the Origin 20 head, I think it hits the classic Marshall tones pretty good, I have owned plexis and a blues breaker a long time ago (Mid 70's), it may not be exact but it is close enough for rock and roll. My settings are as follows Presence 5, Master 4, Treble 5, Middle 8, bass 8, Tilt 6 and Gain 8. Power level Middle. I use it with a pedalboard with Modulation, echo and reverb in the loop. I do use the boost function with the gain on 8 too. I have also used it with everything in front, I prefer the loop though. Great tones you got there, I almost bought the 50 but realistically the 20 is more practical for smaller gigs. Having said all that, I am now moving to the Axefx 3 for pretty much everything, thanks mostly to your videos Leon. Keep up the good work.
The Origin actually reminds me a lot of a Bluesbreaket. Just a lot easier to carry
@@slimturnpike I have sold my origin amp now. Currently I am using a soldano 30 for gigs.
Yes! Stargazer, the tone fits perfect so I can see why 😀
This amps sounds amazing! Great tones man.
This head shines with an attenuator. It really benefits from high power and higher volume.
A DS-1 actually sounds incredible in the 20c with some breakup in the amp. Just keep the DS-1 tone knob way back.
Marshall Collector : called guitar center today , new for $ 465.00 burnt her in 5hrs and damn its bad ass! Have many 4x12 cabs . She Screems like my 1993 SLP 100w reissue , 50watts still ringing !
1:10 that riff sounds so much like Stargazer
BINGO!!! I've been trying to tell all of the lesser experienced guitarists who diss this amp by claiming it sounds: "thin, weak, blah blah".........that they need to consider different speakers because different speakers behave differently with different amps. Not to mention the fact that you can always ADD your own choice of overdrive or distortion pedals. The Origin 20 and 50 both have KILLER clean & crunch tones all by themselves AT VOLUME. I think Marshall really nailed it with these amps at such a low price point. Many amps really start to wimp out when trying to clean them up a bit. But the Origin 20 and 50 really shines. EVEN THE GUITAR & PICK UP CHOICES PLAY A HUGE ROLE WITH DIFFERENT AMPS. P90 PICKUPS SOUND ABSOLUTELY AMAZING WITH THE ORIGIN!!! I would much rather have a tube amp that cleans up nicely and also with just the right amount of break-up for crunch........vs an amp that has killer gain but does NOT clean up very nicely to still have great TONE. YOU CAN ALWAYS ADD.......but NOTHING can bring the clean while still having a sweet tone, unless it's already built into the amp itself. GREAT DEMO!!!
Ive said it before Marshall Origin=Classic Tones!! Nice vid!!
I played the head through a 4x12 at Guitar Center and I'm definitely buying this.
What is the total Wattage of your 4x12 cabinet speaker?
revelationtune 300
300watts ..so this amp is powerful..tnx bro
Man, I hear SO MANY killer songs to be made from almost every riff!
SOLD! My search is over......the Origin 50 is the one!!!! I have a cabinet loaded with greenbacks. Cheers mate \m/
Check out the new studio vintage series too, the sv20 rips
I just got this amp delivered today. I have not been able to coax the kind of rhythm tones you are getting out of it. Only spent about a half hour with it so far though. I do have a JTM build coming in the mail, so this amp may be leaving in a month.
Thanks for the review and for sharing your opinion of this amp (good explanation). I am considering buying one as a backup to my 50watt Marshall bass clone that's sounds somewhere in between a JTM45 and a plexi. You know the deal - you always want something that sounds close to your go-to rig. There's a local used shop I do a lot of biz with that has an Origin 50 so I'm going to try it out.
Just found a 50W combo for 275€ and snagged it. Should arrive soon. I would prefer the head but I'm incredibly broke, having to sell my other amp and some guitars so this seemed like too good an opportunity to pass up. Some people don't seem to like them and resell super cheap. Plus I did take the Creamback out of my old combo and I have a good feeling it will fit. And if it's really awesome it wouldn't even be that pricey to get the head for the band room too. I see them for 300 and the Origin 212 is pretty and not too expensive. Weird that every model has different speakers... G12E60 in 412, 70-80 in 212, V-Type 10 inch in 20 W and Midnight 60 12 inch in the 50W... bloody hell. But I can't complain. A master volume Plexi style amp for this price with Marshall logo and warranty is insane. Had to grab the combo at 275... I hope it works lol, no surprises but I paid for consumer protection so I should be able to return it.
Thank you for reviewing that amplifier
My pleasure!
Using my 50C with HX Effects in 4CM. Now I'm ready to get the 50H full stack! It's that good for what I want. I can get the JTM 45/100 tones I want without the expense and maintenance of the originals or HW
Leon, I been using my Origin 50C as a lightweight tube power amp/ cab option with my FM9 live. The tube power and the speaker actually sound really nice, paired with the Fractal unit and the power scaling option really makes tonal/volume choices a bonus.
how much headroom with a clean ?
@@lonewolf8188 Tons of headroom, this amp is very loud. Running it in 50w mode cleans the tone up and gives you as much headroom as you could wish for.
Just got the origin 50 myself. Love the tone. I put a Friedman BE_OD Delux in front of it and it is a beast.
Exactly what I would do...is it any good ?
Is there a power attenuator on 50w head?
@@martinlahaie6012 not exactly a true attenuator in the head but it allows for low to high volume for playing
Was thinking about this amp head to along with the boss GX-100 but now I’m leaning towards Mesa boogie rectorfier 20. I’m a rock blues and grunge player and like to also play metal. Your thoughts on this would be appreciated Todd
Check out my mini recto vid if you haven't already :)
I hear what you mean about the mid-power setting. I agree from here....
Spunds great! I'm getting one as soon as their available at my retailer again.
That is why I got my studio classic jcm 800 20 watt head and just bought a Marshall origin 50 watt head
Which ones better ?
@@matthewkennedy7283 both u can’t go wrong with either origin u can get plexi tones and the 800 crunch tones for a affordable price
I can't help but to hear Kill'em all and Seasons in the abyss tone with the right boost with that amp .... obviously this amp has tones inspired by the jcm800 but without copying it ...it is its own thing.
your videos are great. thanks, they're very helpful. long may you rock
Very cool head. My only other Marshall was an Original 100w Jubilee which I never jelled with.
The Origin heads sound very good to me...way better than the Jubilee ever sounded.
The Swollen Pickle sounded epic.
Nice little Ratt montage there ..
How old were you when they came out?
Specifically "Lay It Down" in 1985 ..
I recall I was about 26 ..
I've noticed that tons and tons of 30 year olds know and love Ratt, just like we did. They also love Dokken, and Leon is well versed in most of the 80s bands. I really admire them for holding on to that era. But what just got lost is the 70s, and with the blend of disco, Motown, Funk, and Pop music of the 70s, we were more than ready for the 80s. I continue to tell them, you want to know what inspired all the great guitarists of the 80s? The 70s. It was humdrum city, and we needed to break out.
-3 in 85. Grew up starved of guitar music in the early 00's and file sharing had just become a thing so I got deep into Ratt, Dokken, Scorpions, Savatage and Winger.
As for Ratt "Lay it down" riff,it is relentless used in guitar videos of present day.
I can understand why. It's masterpiece.Every time you hear it,it feels like flying or something......
Please a comparation with vintage modern .
-Do you get Vintage Modern vibes from this amp?- Scratch that. Looking forward to the next video where you compare the two. Haha.
Jesus Christ that Swollen Pickle is naaaaastyyy🤘😦
The rainbow song is of course stargazer. Nice!
Stargazer.... What an amazing song. And a cool video too man. Seems like a cool amp. I want one! haha.
Stargazer was one of those lifechanging songs for me
Really like the origin 50 with creamback m65 and the hertiage G12H30 speakers .. Thicker and tighter low end and low mids with those speakers. Especially the 55hz H30.
I just bought this amp specifically to run distortion pedals in front and in the return. I hope l make the right decision
sounds cool leon switching axes
There are simple mods to bring of the low end so it sounds like a 1987 50 Watt. i owned 2 1987's in the past and this has no trouble matching them. I mainly use it for a mild crunch and then use pedals from low thru flat out Metal OD's and fuzz pedals. I have no trouble being able to take the back wall of a club with my Power Trio.
I just ordered the 50 head, but couldn’t decide between 50 or 20. I have a rockcrusher attenuator, and I figured even with 20 it would need that to play at home. 50 would give me the option to play some more clean tones in a band setting. Hope my thinking is correct!
The sound of the Origin is definitely more open en breaths more than a DSL amp. I bought a MXR Eq pedal for my dsl5, it do the job. But now I want a Origin 20H head… 🤣. “Where isss tze money Lebowski!”
Awesome playing and tone ..
Thanks a lot!
I was thinking about grabbing one until you mentioned that the low end is flubby. Thanks for the warning.
They sound good but the new studio range from Marshall which includes 20 watt versions of the super lead and jcm 800 will almost make these obsolete! Great demo Leon.
Can't wait to try those
but these are half the price!!!
doubled18588 I said almost! Most guys looking for this kind of thing will now look to them new models and pay the extra, I know I would.
I'm not sure. They left a pretty good separation in price. Marshall is smart. There's Friedman amps and other great amps for $1,500. And people are still buying the origin. These new Marshalls will also be $1,500.
Marshall makes most of their profits on Asian amplifiers. It probably cost $50 to get that origin amp made in Vietnam. And they sell it for 600.
I normally do not like T75s but they sound pretty damn good here.
Very good review. Though I can't believe you like the mid power over the high power. I think the high power is way more ballsy and what I have always liked about the Marshalls. I have at Anniversary 6100 LE and even when the master is turned way down it sounds so much better at the high power than the mid and low power.
Yeah I have tried my 20c at midpower and it just doesn't work for me
this is a beautiful amp...real marshall sound...i put a 12ax7a JJ Tesla in V2 and in Phase inverter and it became a pushed JCM 800....but with plexi fullness and bass....beautiful beautiful....and i f you push the presence on 10 like Steve Vai did the gain increseases terribly and you can compensate by setting the TILT on 11 o clock setting....with these settings and creambacks speaker cabs and a Xotic AC overdrive in front you have a sound Identical to Annihilator Alice in Hell record....and this only setting gain on 2 o'clock (with boost on) ...beacuse the above mentioned presence setting at 10 increases the amp gain terribly....try...ah remember to put master above 7, otherwise no gain...
I’m not getting the plexi fullness on mine. Not at all.. it sounds about like it does in these videos which ain’t bad. But beside a plexi amp it’s a bit thin . But I’ll remember to try different pre amp tubes. I have no idea what marshall put in that amp.i just know the pcb is really thin so it could probably use a fan.
Hey hey really love the vid! Was curious what Greenbacks you think would be best with this Marshall?
Still can't decide between origin20h or dsl20hr
I mainly play GnR, ACDC and Zeppelin. I think the dsl is more suited for GnR and the origin more for zeppelin and ACDC.
I'm having the same issue
Este amplificador tiene potencia suficiente para tocar en directo junto a una batería y un bass?
I just got the 20 watt one cheap as new still in packaging. Half price. I agree they are a little tubby. I run it into Two Notes. I can get some great tones using a Tony Iommi TI Boost. It tightens up the low end much better than the built in boost. I was frustrated with a 80s JCM800 1987 I had. It just would not crunch no matter what we did to it. This Origin amp does crunch really nicely. It reminds more of a 1974X than a Superlead though. I am keen to hear it with a Belle Epoch Deluxe and a fuzz in front of it. I think Jimmy used a fuzz a lot more than people think. I also think I might be able to get some Malmsteen tones out of this amp.
I had sold my amp thinking I could make do with modelling and plugins like Helix Native, or my fav amp sim Le Pou. Nah. As soon as I hooked this thing up to the Captor load box and Wall Of Sound I heard what I was missing. Modelling does high gain and clean well, but it's not so good at old school crunchy amps I think. Old school amps have a thump to the low end that is grunty, but still kind of clean. Old marshall amps have this brash treble thing going on too. Kind of thin and even brittle, but that's the tone. Hit it hard and it is that sound we all know from so many records.
What do you think of the amp? I think it sounds more like an old amp. I like it.
I keep telling myself I'm going to wait to get a top of the line boutique, amp but between Jet City and now the Marshall Origin series, I might have to put that major purchase on hold again. lol
I know the problem Marshall is smart. They're keeping the price of this amp low enough to tempt you. LOL
Diggin high pwr mode
Nice video! How different do you think it will be from the 50 combo? Im not available to buy a cab atm but I want this 60/70s classic tone, send help D:
Hi Leon thanks 4 great wid! Can U tell me on your opinion which one is better Marshall origin 50 or Blackstar Mkii 50 Tnks 🤘
Ive had mine for about 8 months. Agree about the middle power setting. Im using a pedal board with an hx effects as well as traditional pedals. Havent had any real issues with it. The ONLY thing I didnt like about it was the included footswitch HAS to be used to use the fx loop. Really would have like a modern button on the back to turn fx loop on and off. But with some creativity, that issue was resolved.
How?
@@prozaccowboy In the beginning, I shortened the cable for the footswitch where it would just sit on top of the amp. I never needed to turn off the effects loop. After I got tired of having that on top of the amp, i literally installed the footswitch button for the effects loop on the back of the amp in the place of the input. This requires going in and modifying it obviously, but problem solved for my needs.
Sounds great!
My settings are
Presence 0
Master 5
Treble 0
Bass 2
Mids 4
Tilt 5
Gain 5
Boss ge7 in loop
Boss bd2 and mosky golden horse out front = brilliant, p.s I'm.on 50w selection
Great tones
Stargazer!
I'm looking at an offer for the Origin50 right now for $350, but i just want to use it as a platform for high gain pedals and different FX. Think its worth it?
Marshall owes you some commission bro... I'm so jones'in for this amp... Great video. "Two thumbs up. Better than Cat's" lol
I see dead people.
hey Leon, you try the YJM, Satch, or mode4 Marshalls yet?
Stargazer. 🤘❤️🤘 Brilliant review and amp.
What 412 cab would u suggest would best suit this mate? The origin 412, 1960 or??
It's not BRUTAL like a real Plexi, but sounds more "boutique" a plexi with finesse! actually like the vibe lots!
Serious question: Do I need an Origin if I already own a DSL 100 ? I don’t mind if I do. 😃 What does the origin that a DSL doesn’t?
That is a good question. How does the dsl 100 do in 50 watt mode? Any tone loss?
IMO the DSL50 is the best Marshall ever. If you want a different Marshall flavour grab a used Vintage Modern or get a Ceriatone custom build
How do you compare this Origin 50 to your beloved DSL 50
Dude im about to order one and the FIRST Riff i was gonna play was man on silver!
i love,..starstruck,an if you dont like rock n roll etc..ritchies solos are beyond impossible to copy just like he does them..
One of a kind player
you really are into the sound ay...excellent...i recently realised my 100w sovtek stack was too big n heavy for me to lug ,let it go and got a katana50 , but i cant get it to really do it...this might be the next thing ,it sez its 11kg, if i get a 212 box mabye i can lug it ,but im thinkin the cheap box is shit...im gunna ring up ..the shop likes me coz i dont get silly about the spend.
Leon,
As a fellow John Sykes fan, in your opinion can the Origin 50 get close to his sound?
I'd look elsewhere
Love my 50h although it's taken me a while to dial in and remove brightness, u can play it on.the 50w selection pretty dam loud but if u run a boss ge7 in loop u can contoverall loudness with its volume slider which mine is set alot lower than centre, then u really hear this incredible amp
Hey Leon make demo of the AVT50H. I really would like to see how you pull that one out. love your videos! cheers from the island of Malta!
Leon
Can you do a comparison between the Marshall Origin 50 head and a Orange CR120H head, on a 4/12 bottom cabinet?
I use an original Peavey 5150 4/12 bottom. I want to purchase a new amp head and can not decide between the two? My band primarily plays harder edge rock, Metallica, Megadeth, Foo Fighters, Thin Lizzy, etc.
Help me decide which one!
I'm still chasing tones. I'm after REO Speedwagon's Nine Lives sound. You end up requiring a Marshall and it has to have full on presence to aid in the subtle breakup coupled with PAF style pickups. I can't get it. I bought an expensive JTM style amp, and it'll have nothing to do with it. This amp is likely in my future. A collection of Marshall amps... Guys who love Marshall's always have a set of them. Because they rock.
Have you ever played a 70s JMP? Might be the only Marshall you ever need.
Solar Guitar Studio that REO album is one of my favorites from them. Gary was so good, but sometimes had a piercing tone. He was sounding awesome on Nine Lives.
I have some hiss when pushing it with EVH overdrive i'm thinking maybe the tubes need to be replaced?
So which speaker does this best with?
If you stil have this you should take it to head first amps and jose mod it!
Great review. I dig the amp and pick attack but would like to tame the brightness a bit, what speakers would you recommend with a strat?
You could just throw in an eq pedal for next to no money and tame it.
Yeah, I'm overthinking it with these reviews. Less is more, knob fiddling works too. A decent eq would be cool tho
No Credits you are right you could help with the higher frequencies with a new speaker, but I can’t be arsed swapping and changing so I picked up an MXR 10 band eq does what I need it to for around £100 new.
I'LL buy one
Ok I got the 50head playing though a marshall 212 seventy 80 speakers 160watt using fender telecaster hh and a Boss ME80 but I can't get my break up sound like yours it sounds more on the bluesy side
That's why I bought it! Great blues tone!
Okay, I'm hooked !
I recently bought the 20 watt version of this amp and mated it to a 2x12 creamback cab. I am wondering how these reviewers are getting so much gain out of it? I like the tone but it really doesn't have very much gain to speak of
Not supposed to have alot of gain. I run a Tubescreamer and an OCD boost most of the time and it gets nasty. I have a Wampler Pantheon I use once in a while as well. Great pedal platform.
the power section changes the sound dramatically,
Are you using one single Greenback Speaker (25W)? I'd like to do the same, but I didn't think / wasn't sure running full power (50W) was safe?
3:12 Have a question, friend) can I do that while I am already playing? Or I have to turn off an amp first and than switch the power?
Did you test the 20W version? I believe that's pretty much the same if use the same Cabs.
I did try the 20 combo into a 412, sounded similar
