As the owner of this amp, having found Jason at Headfirst Amps on this channel, I can honestly say I couldn't have found anyone better to build me a Plexi mod. His work is first class and he is such a nice guy. Thank you once again mate! You're a legend and you're going to have the best Amp company in Australia 🇦🇺 ✌️
You know the SV20 has all the same parts in it, same Vietnamese ‘bamboo’ transformers etc as you say. Anyway, the point here is to DIY. $10 worth of parts. Not total BS.
@@HeadfirstAmps I keep getting asked about the Hotrod Deluxe video I did off the cuff years ago. Didn't even bother to finish it, as I had like 3 subscribers at the time. Now I hardly see them because either people are now fixing their own thanks to many vids, or they're all fixed locally.
DAMN when you max out the treble channel it sounds so sick. That pumping compression on attack. Tasty. I just delved into just putting a rotary switch to choose different bright caps on my SV20, but man now I wanna dive way way deeper and make it do THAT too! Sadly I'm not nearly as experienced in circuits :'D Just sick.
I've come to the conclusion that you are A) either really good at modding amps OR.............B) really good at mixing audio. Either way you have a skill set that is impressive. I am beginning to suspect that there may be something to this "tube magic"
I just wanted to ask you, on my Origin 20 amp head, can I use the DI out to my interface with our having a speaker plugged in or something like the two notes reactive load box. What I am seeing people say is that there is an artificial load when no speaker is plugged in. Thanks for any clarification and I really enjoy your videos. I was friends with a guy named Frank Levi, who was my go to for repairs or mods, for decades, but he has passed away. Thank you for your time.
Sounds great! I was thinking about buying one of these heads but I am not amp tech so I would have to have it modified so I don't die. I do think it sounds great. But would it be worth paying to have it modified or just saving up a little more money, who am kidding, a lot more money and getting maybe 50watt 1987 plexi.
Hey Jase, I decided I'm not ready to take on an amp build yet. I'm gonna buy an amp from Alex and if I build an amp I'll start with a 5 watt champ or something like that.
@@HeadfirstAmps haha...no but remember that Diamond Head that Alex bought and completely rewired? He's selling it to me for 650....I cant say no to that.
The push pul switch after plexi mod with potmeter, is it another pot with switch i have to buy or is it the one disconnected and reused? audiotaper pot i heard. the second volume where the til pot is/was also a different pot or just rewired? and where can i get them. do not use Facebook. But found some on the origin 20. i will do the full pexi mod and change some resistors like the hvite ceramic ones and the 2 watt underrated resistor said to be on the limit when at high power setting. is a rep video about this on u tube. Restoring a Hagstrøm Bass 210. fun small amp.65 model.
I guess the goal of these mods (which sound great, btw!) Is to take what is designed to be a low gain amp and turn it into a high gain amp. I have so many questions, but the obvious one is if someone wants a high gain amp, why not just purchase one to begin with? It's like purchasing a Roland Jazz Chorus and modding it to sound like a dual rectifier. I don't quite get it. I admit that I am not a high gain player, and my Origin 50 sounds wonderful as is to me so clearly this mod is not for me but calling this a "Plexi Mod" is a bit of a stretch because I've played a JTM 45 and a Super Lead and though these mods sound awesome on TH-cam, they don't sound like the Plexis I've played. I do enjoy watching! If I had your knowledge and skills, I would make the distortion smoother, butt I wouldn't dare add more distortion.
Well, this mod turns the amp into a legit Plexi front end. You can get clean tones from a Plexi, and you can from this amp after it’s been modded too….and it sounds way better than the stock amp even set clean imho. Why do people mod Origins? Because they are dissatisfied with the stock amp, and modding it (especially if you DIY) is cheaper than selling and buying a better amp.
Thanks for the response! I guess I would like to hear the full dynamic range of the nodded amp. The only sounds i hear highlighted are super saturated Van Halen-like tones. Which, again sound great, but it seems like a one trick pony. Can we hear some edge of break up sounds for a change? How about a smooth woman tone? Richie Blackmore strat tone? A fat clean tone? Just a suggestion. As I think more about this, why would someone purchase an amp in the first place that they were dissatisfied with?
@bgingras05 I haven't, actually. I have decided to gut the amp and handwire something like a 1987 circuit in it. I noticed some red plating in the origin, and when I turned the bias trim pot , it malfunctioned. So it made up my mind pretty quickly. I'm sure the mod works great though.
Hi Jason, for a "Core" Plexi sound being say a Live J Page (Madison Square Garden)or Maybe Angus (Back in Black) tone, do you have a Preference for one Origin over the other (50 vs 20) once your 'Magic' has been performed? Great vid btw.
A 50 will deliver voltages that are on spec with a 50 1987 model Plexi. The 20’s voltages are too low for that, and are therefore naturally more ‘brown’
@@HeadfirstAmps Thanks for that Jason. On a "simplified" level, I take from that the '20' would lend towards the Browner EVH 1 while the '50' toward the Page/Angus flavor while anything may be possible with Mods and Dollars??
Could you answer a question please sir. I just bought a SC20H 220v from the UK. I really want to use KT88s, I put 2 in but the other day but they lack a bit of gain, I guess due to the biasing. I am told I would need to get them to bias hotter for that. I am learning that the bias though is done by the resistor making them run cold, but by putting a 5w 68 ohm in parallel with the bias resistor, I could get hotter safely. Is this the route to go sir?
Why do you want KT88s in that amp? Honestly I can’t see the point. If you change the bias to make it pull more current at idle you’ll likely burn out the power transformer sooner or later.
Ummmm kidda rude response from you WOW. And yeah WHY -- because I want to and like there sound. That’s why I’m asking if the 68 ohm would still keep it in a safe range. I know it can be done but I was because I have saw it done, I expected a more professional response. Thanks I should have looked for advice elsewhere.
Sorry, not trying to be rude. Just trying to understand why, because tubes don’t really have sound - but the circuits they go into do. Sorry for giving out free advice.
Sounds muddy and mushy on the bass and piercing treble on the high end. Why bother modding it, it’s clearly a dud of an amp no matter what you do to it

The axial cap replacement at 25 min into video at right side of main board, could iy be stood up? Too tall or leads to short?
You could stand it up, ground side exposed.

Just set the treble channel to 0. The push pull is for the treble channels bright cap.
