Despite just having less break up; almost like the bright cap mod on an original plexi. I really think these amps are slept on. If you lust after a plexi, but either dont have the budget for one, or just wish they were more usuable, do /not/ rule out an origin amp!!
The fx toggle feature I think was made do you can toggle all your effects at the same time. Like fern and delay instead of pressing 2 pedals. The design flaw was making the default “off”.
I'm ashamed to say that I have avoided my favorite Marshall for a couple of years because I thought my effects loop wasn't working, you solved the problem for me. Thanks!
Hahahah it happens, i still remember once a had to play live and ive thought that my fx loop was broken or something. Then i realize it was the footswitch
It all went wrong when they started making headphones and fridges and bar stools etc. They took their eye off the ball. Friedman are what Marshall should have been. Such a shame.
because it's a single channel amp with a pull-boost gain knob, the 2 switch pedal has a Gain-boost on/off button that does the same as the pull knob and the other one is the fx loop on/off button instead of reverb button for example. Therefore the fx loop only works when that footswitch is plugged in and switched on. Even the manual says that. oh, and don't think of the footswitch connection on the amp as an 'output' because it isn't. No audio signal goes to the footswitch. It's just a connection for the switch buttons. on, or off. 👍 cheers!
I have a 50w Origin... always thought they got a bad rap (probably because people were expecting a Plexi and/or an 800). You definitely have to push the volume to get into overdrive/breakup territory, but it sounds so warm when you get there.
People will often "bag" something they don't understand. When the origin line came out, it was really misunderstood, but I think it's now getting the credit it deserves. I have a 20h and using an attenuator allows me to get that Marshall sound and keep my hearing.
Agree. When I finally got around to buying a Marshall I put the 50w Origin against the 40w DSL. I ended up with the DSL because it offered more flexibility which suited what I was doing at the time but the Origin was sweet. The bad reviews I read on it all seemed to be criticising it for what it wasn't rather than reviewing what it is. It isn't a JCM or a Plexi and it isn't an amp that takes massive amounts of gain but it has an amazing sweet spot just past the edge of break up. When the sales assistant came back to me to see how I was getting on I admitted that I had entered the shop asking the wrong question. I went in thinking "which do I buy, the DSL or the Origin". Playing them I realised that I should have been asking "which do I buy FIRST".
What impeccable timing for you to make a video on the Origin 50....I've been jamming out on mine all evening! Having a plethora of gear is such a great blessing; just plug into something different for a while and get inspired, by the time I circle back, it's like having a new voice all over again!
Great amp! BTW...one of the things about you that I love to watch is your right hand. It's one of the most relaxed looking hands I've seen. It'd be great if you made a video about just that...how to keep it relaxed, even when you're playing faster or with more energy.
I'm not an amp expert but more than likely it has to do with power drain. Most fx loops have a pad on them to compensate for possible volume increases from fx. It has a lot to do with whether the loop is parallel or series as well. So especially back in the day if you wanted your amp to be a little louder you would just use a small connector cable to patch the fx loop to increase the output on the amp. Kind of the way people would patch the front of the amp hi low inputs on old plexis and Hi-watts. So this was probably a stop gap solution to that, that if you aren't "using" the fx loop you get the extra volume output from the bypass. But for everyone reading if you have an fx loop and you don't use it, plug in a small pedal patch cable and you might be able to get yourself a few extra DB boost. Especially if it's an older amp. This is just a guess as to why the origin works this way.
yeah you can get some cool sounds with tubes like swinging them in circles to get that shwooshy sound or singing into them but im not sure why that was relevant to the topic
I have an Origin 50 I bought used a few years ago. Since then, I bought a 100W JCM800, so I've pondered selling the 50, but I've been somewhat convinced to keep it. The amps can do different things, which is more or less how I've approached amp collecting over the past few years. Good to know about the effects loop being interlocked with the foot switch. I'll have to remember that.
I don’t know; to me an on/off for the fx loop makes total sense. Just turning off all the pedals in the loop still leaves all that circuitry/cables etc. in the signal chain, vs being able to bypass the whole thing and have the signal go direct as if there’s nothing in the loop.
@@tiagoandrade5826 It definitely is darker but can sound brighter with adjusting the eq. It has the most sculptable eq of any Marshall amp I’ve ever heard.

It still doesn't sound right you should need a foot switch plugged in for the FX loop to work? I couldn't find a full schematic for any of the origin series amps, but found a SV20H. Looks like they group all the switches together so maybe one or both of the 1/4" jack switches is stuffed?

If he was older I would have asked him to see if he Peed his pants, it was so funny. Oh HE flipped the 1st time I put on an old Albert KING record. LOL.
I assume it's a bypassable effects loop? I prefer them because it doesn't effect the tone the way a normal one does (when it's bypassed), which is a lot. I haven't seen any of these amps insides of schematics though, so I'm just guessing.
This is truly something an audio tech or sound engineer would have troubleshooted in five minutes. We unplug, replug, and try everything to eliminate or isolate the issue. Because we gotta know... we can't stand the mystery.

I’ve heard that Suave is a good shampoo...but I wouldn’t know...I never wash my hair...I would if I had a blow dryer maybe, but I don’t...yours must take a couple hours a day, maybe you could illuminate on it.
You never wash your hair?
That's kinda 🤮🤮🤮
@@castleanthrax1833 Nope.

@@castleanthrax1833 You’re quite judgemental. I’m impressed. You should run for public office.
@@johnr3369 You're easily impressed.
I haven't checked prices on the Origin series in a while, but hasn't the 50 gone up by like 50%? That's insane!!! No desire at this stage in life to overspend on gear.
Sounds mighty sweet, especially with that JR!
I noticed the same thing when I got the 20 h. Unfortunately had to sell it because of unavoidable circumstances, but I think I'll get the 50 next time. Have a great day brother. ☮️❤️
You remind me of the other guitar player who was in my band in the mid 70's. he used to get so stoked out on Mississippi Queen, the other one that stoked him out was if I put on a Roy Buchanan Record. If he was older I would have asked him to see if he Peed his pants, it was so funny. Oh HE flipped the 1st time I put on an old Albert KING record. LOL.
I had the combo version. The one I had was JUNK! It sounded like crap and rattled terribly. I may have to give the head a try. We’ll see
I haven't tried the combo before but the head rules
Good man ,I’ve got one and it screams….it gets it done tubes and all
I had a few. My last one, 30th Anniversary 100 watt head with 5881’s, unfortunately it was stolen.
✌️☹️🎸🎶🎵🤬
🤬
I have the 50 and 20 heads. Great amps.
I’m always ready for real amps!! Sounds great Robert!!
With you I am, pushing air is where it’s at
No apologies needed, a good sound cannot be denied!
You're so sorry you posted it twice! Sounds great! I love my 2553.
Respect for revisiting this.
Please do a slash course!!!
I assume it's a bypassable effects loop? I prefer them because it doesn't effect the tone the way a normal one does (when it's bypassed), which is a lot.
I haven't seen any of these amps insides of schematics though, so I'm just guessing.
Yes - it's tube buffered too. They come with a foot switch to enable/disable.
I know I never read the directions either 🙂
😂 great job 👍
This is truly something an audio tech or sound engineer would have troubleshooted in five minutes.
We unplug, replug, and try everything to eliminate or isolate the issue. Because we gotta know... we can't stand the mystery.
True rock monster sits in that head. Perfect recording.
Makin that amp sound SWEET
Guitar Jesus videos are my favorite. Keep on keepin on man. You're one of the best
Your a Stand up Guy Rob. 👊😎
Brands have come and gone (and some resurrected after years), but the Marshall has remained the mainstay of Rock. The only other amp that interests me is Friedman, who have a long connection to Marshall.
Yes, Freidman sounds good, but the price of admission is a little steep.
@@robertcarey3383 I’m looking at IRX. Affordable and is pure Friedman BE tone. I already have FR speakers and amp, that I use with my Kemper.
