Richard Hammond commutes to work in our new 700hp Dodge Charger Hellcat!

  • With the DriveTribe Dodge Charger Hellcat settling in nicely with our team, Mike decided the boss deserved a go. Richard Hammond thought it would be fitting to use the 707hp supercharged animal to commute from his house to the Smallest Cog, because who wouldn't want to drive to work in a 6.2-litre hemi-powered monster?

More guys (and people in general) need to let out their inner kid and not take life so seriously. Richard is absolutely the type of man I'd love to be in a relationship with, or at least have as a best friend (since Richard is unfortunately taken 😂).

You nailed it. That's precisely what that car is about; a commuter/saloon/family car that lets you escape the drabness of the daily grind here and there. Purchased my 392 in Germany (US Auto Sales). Loved the Autobahn. Finding parking was sometimes difficult, but they have a lot of parking garages. I was surprised how many people would stare, roll down their window to hear it, or come up to me and ask about it. I had a grandpa (in the back seat of an SUV) stick his head out the window and yell at me in German. We were in a stahl (traffic jam) on the Autobahn. I said I don't speak German well, and he replied in English "hit the gas", so I revved it for him. Big smile on his face. I received quite a few looks and smiles. A couple behind me at a stop light kept pointing to the back of the car, leaning forward to see something. I thought they were trying to see my license plate, then realized they were trying to see what kind of car it was. Badges are blacked out, so they are hard to read on black paint.

Speaking as a Canadian, these cars are considered "full size" cars, and are made for North American roads, where even the surface streets are wide enough to fit three of these abreast. Considering that they trace their lineage back to a Mercedes E-class, they're not THAT big.
full disclosure: I'm a licensed mechanic at a dealership that sells and services these, and I drive a GMC Yukon XL (Chevrolet Suburban) so I'm both familiar with the size of these, and primarily drive something even bigger. So my perception of size is a bit skewed.

Dodge did exactly to the Charger what Camaro should have done. I've owned two Dodge Chargers. First was the V6 version. A completely practical family sedan. 8 speed transmission with still plenty of power and 32 mpg highway. Then traded it in for it's bigger brother, the R/T with the 5 speed slap shift and 375 horsepower. I LOVED it. Black with black leather seats and pearl additive to the paint gave it a fantastic stage presence. A very large car with an equally large blind spot behind the "C" post. But hey, you're only looking forward in a car like that. Watching Richard Hammond of all people get all giddy over a popular and cheap (relatively speaking) American muscle car is quite fantastic. Not only does he make the car look bigger, but so do the roads and other cars on the road in the UK. Somebody should take Richard and put him in a lifted Chevy Silverado 3500 LT 4x4 quad cab long bed dually that way we can have a proper conversation about ridiculously large vehicles.

100% agree. The Hellcat is overkill and a waste if it never sees a track. I have the Challenger ScatPack 392 Widebody and daily drive it year round. @@coolmetin02 If you drive it agressively, fuel consumption is severe. All that power doesn't come from thin air. However there is an ECO setting that can be enabled in Auto mode and if you drive conservatively, the fuel use drops significantly, maybe as low as 12L/100km (20mpg). These V8s also have the ability to reduce the number of active cylinders from 8 to 4 to save fuel so cruising on the highway can stretch a tank pretty far.

I'm going to say something you might not realize. Because the engine creates so much talk, if you drive it sedately, you'll get amazing mileage on your commute. My mate had a Ford Mustang GT500 (662hp) and on his commute from the Detroit Suburbs to Ford Headquarters he could average (no BS) 36mpg. Part of it was the route he took and part of it was he never had to push the revs above 1,200. I have no doubt the Hellcat or the Chevy Corvette would pull similar numbers in the right conditions.
