    My Marlin 1895, 45-70 Govt(CB) with 26 inch barrel:
    The outfitter had been giving me a little bit of a hard time about using a "vintage" rifle and cartridge combination. The guide even brought a .30-06 along with us "in case a wounded animal is gonna get off.” I was using Garrett Hammerhead +P ammo and dropped him with such authority that the guide was at first sure the elk was spined. He wasn't. The bullet entered behind the shoulder, double lunged the elk, broke the off-side shoulder, and was recovered just under the hide on the off-side. Bull reared slightly at the impact and went down without taking a single step. The range was approximately 172-yds. My guide told the outfitter and the other guides the story several times and kept saying he wished he had video'd the shot so they could have seen it! Very happy to take this elk with my "vintage" rifle and caliber.

    Some idiot told me a Marlin 45-70 would never reach 200 yards

      +Torrey Ellison (Highgear1) Your 30-30 will go plenty far too. Got some video of our brother ringing steel out to 900 yards. Always glad to hear from another levergun enthusiast. I hope your hunting season went well and look forward to seeing more of your videos. Be safe, have fun and hope to see you on the range of in the field someday.

      Excellent. Be safe and have fun. It is hard to beat a 30-30 as a general purpose rifle.

      Torrey Ellison Good that means more 45/70 ammo for me and you. Let that person keep on believing that.

      Some guy in Australia took his Marlin Guide Gun 45-70 and shot 1080 yards off hand. It's on TH-cam.

    How would the marlin cowboy in 45 70 compare in accuracy at long range to a sharps in 45 70

    how would you compare the long range accuracy of the Marlin cowboy, with other western era 45-70 lever guns e.g. 1886 replicas ... I'm currently looking at a Chiappa ... Hard to find an 1895 Cowboy in Canada ....

    • @SagebrushLongshots
      @SagebrushLongshots  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have experience with the 1886 specifically but some of their other guns seem to be pretty good shooters.

    Hey Whit, I was considering getting myself into the lever action world. With my budget I was eyeing the Marlin 1895 cowboy. Do you or any of the other cast members have any experience with the newer models that are currently being produced? I know fit and finish aren't what they used to be, but functionally and accuracy-wise are they still good? Any info would help. Thanks Brother!

      I think most of the bugs have been worked out by now and what I've seen lately have been very good. I've owned five 1895's and all where good shooters. Two shot everything well. The other three took some load development. I suspect that may hold true on the newer versions as well. Slug the bore. My CB shoots .460" much better than .459" Best of luck!
