From Deb in North Carolina…I’m an avid knitter and watercolor artist, who has taught color theory. From what you have there in yarn for your husband’s sweater, you should trust your instincts. On my iPad, your couch looks navy with mustardy pillows. You seem to already go for that combination. Lay your swatch on the couch and back way up, even leave the room for a bit. Looking again, you’ll get a better idea of the color ratios you’ve chosen for the sweater. Your accent colors will pop on the main color field. You said your main yarn is a bluey purple. On the color wheel, yellow is opposite purple. So this is why your main color so nicely pops the mustardy color, just as you have with your couch/ pillows. Also, painters love to lay in a warm color ( mustard) next to a cool color ( bluey/ purple) so that the colors punch. So your first instinct of color choice is technically what I consider the best when I paint or knit. Give yourself a pat on the back and get knitting.
Wòw Deb , great suggestion . I always have a hard time deciding colors , my choices are the same ones all the time . Going to pull out an old color wheel and start a new look at yarn colors. 👍 😊
This is such a great suggestion Walter! Thank you so much. I will do just what you said because I think I just need to remind myself that the complimentary nature of these colors will pay off nicely when there's more of the MC to compliment. Honestly, great advice. Thank you!
Love this explanation, Deb! I'm also an artist, although I primarily work with acrylics and colored pencils. Just wanted to offer double confirmation on what you said for Tayler's sweater. I think it will work amazingly!
When it comes to my crafts my motto is to always do what makes me happy and brings me joy in the moment, so I think if working on the beautiful sweater Gladys is wearing brings you some joy and peace, go for it! Your Frankensweater will be there when you are ready to tackle it. I love watching your podcast and seeing what you are working on. I hope you have a great week!
I was a kid in the 70's & absolutely adored 2 things from the odd fashion of that era, the clogs and capes. I am now in my early 50s & still LOVE clogs & capes (now capes, capelets & swonchois), but living in a colder climate & age not being as appreciative of it, I am now selfishly knitting your mittens patter so I can enjoy wearing my newly finished swoncho and cape. Coziness, thy name is Fire Pit mittens! Thanks T!
My favorite short row heel is the mock short row heel. I get no gapping at all and it’s so easy to execute. Roxanne Richardson has an excellent tutorial on TH-cam.
Love your swatch, the colours are great together. Your husband must be very knit worthy because of the cost and your deep concern for the project. Lucky guy!
The colours you picked for your husband’s sweater will be stunning together. I think once you have it knit that the balance of the plum colour will be a perfect with the mustard and grey accent.
Thanks, Tayler, for keeping to your podcast schedule even though you had a super busy week. I hope the kids are both doing well (I do realize only one was sick, but I’m sending good vibes to both). I also loved hearing that you updated your pattern with your new streamlined directions. It’s a great sign that you are investing in your designs and skills.
Your fire pit kits were a hit at the holidays. I knit a pair for all the men in my family. I even had someone offer to pay me well to knit a dozen more for his employees. I have yet to knit myself a pair and I would love to try your mohair version. And I must say you color choices for your sweater are fabulous! Love it! Thanks again for a great podcast and all your tips!
Hi Tayler! My go-to short row heel is from Earthtones Girl. Her video tutorial is great & easy to follow. She's a born teacher. And the "Bewitched" sound effect cracked me up!
I agree with reknitting the bottom of your Franken sweater and your husband's sweater is going to be grand!! Thanks for weighing the fingerless mitts because I have enough yarn left over from a cowl to knit them up.
As a former boomerang heel knitter, I really encourage you to look into the Shadow Wrap Heel. IMHO it is far more comfortable and it's way easier to do. It also allows you to do a contrasting colour on the heel, if you wish, which the boomerang heel doesn't really allow for. (And Denise of Earth Tones Girl has the best tutorial. Who wouldn't want to listen to her soothing voice explaining something?)
The sweater colors are amazing, beautiful! It will look different when the accent colors are in the ratio of the design. And I agree with walter/Deb About the couch and pillows 😆 you are vibing those colors in your backdrop! Maybe it’s a bit more purple than expected but it matches the particular yellow nicely.
When I take a break from a project, it is usually because I need to make a decision and I don't really like any of my choices. I need time and space to contemplate my options, see if I come up with any new solutions and eventually I'll circle back around and do the hard work, whatever it is. If you want to finish the project you will, don't stress about taking a break.
I just discovered your podcast and really really like it. I have watched all of them and look forward to more. I especially love that you talk about knitting, yarns that are for all budgets and techniques rather than name dropping and acquisitions. It actually feels like a knit night conversation with a ( young) old friend. Your room is also so beautiful and makes me want to use more color. Thank you for your work!!!
Taylor those Kroy socks are gorgeous!!! I just went to Michaels and got 4 skeins on sale. What a win! I just watched a tutorial by Suzanne Bryan on TH-cam, it's very good step by step how to do the Boomerang Heel. I think you're right to fix the Frankensweater, you know you don't like it as it is, it sucks to have to rip it back, but in the end you'll be really glad you did. I have a sweater that I keep having to take it out and do it again, but I want it to be right, it's too much time and money. I want to really like it.
It looks great. I wonder if you would like it more switching the grey and mustard? But I think once all the navy/ plum done it will look amazing!! Thank you for your time and know you are being so much joy to the knitting community! 🎉
Nimble Needles has a really great write up on his blog for the German short-row heel/boomerang heel. It's got a great write up and pictures for each step. He also did a video for it.
Color selection can be so challenging. I agree that using the color wheel can help locate complementary colors. Depending on how much blue vs. purple, the compliment may be more orange or red vs yellow. But it is not an exact science, for sure, it is what you find appealing. I will often look for projects on Ravelry that have a similar number of colors and see what stands out well. Another good source are the old lopi pattern books as they often used color so well. Another idea is asking the yarn provider for some suggestions since it is so hard to tell on a monitor. Your colors are really beautiful and it is a wonderful yarn and pattern!
Another lovely catch up☺️. Good to hear that your family is well. Your partner has given you the “go” to knit the sweater with the chosen colours and the swatch which verified his satisfaction….👍he’s the one who will be wearing it😉… Cast On👍. Wise choice to give your frankensweater an itty bitty break and redoing the bottom will be the icing on the cake. I too have knit the versal and am very pleased with the fit…the shoulder construction is awesome. I’m a 2 at a time toe up sock knitter, and geesh, I’ve not heard about the boomerang heel. How interesting🤔. Sooo pleased that you enjoy and encourage engagement in the comments! If any other viewers read this, may I encourage them to “Like” and Subscribe to your channel !! Thank you for sharing your time☺️🇨🇦
Tayler you are doing great. I have been knitting almost my whole life (50+ years) and I have to say that since watching your podcasts you have totally inspired me to be a better knitter. I have learned more from you in the past few months than I will be ever be able to express. Thanks for keeping it together after what sounds like a really tough week for you. ❤❤
I like the colours you've chosen for your hubby's sweater. As you pointed out, the swatch is mostly the 2 minor colours and the plum is just along the border. Try looking at the swatch with several of the plum skeins surrounding it to make the ratio more in line with the final piece. Those fingerless mitts are tempting. That may become 2023 Christmas presents. I love a good palate cleanser. Right now I'm crocheting an easy blanket which will take me less than a week to complete.
I am so glad you mentioned the boomerang heel! This is by far the easiest heel I have knitted personally. If you have an easier time learning from video tutorials Norman from Nimble Needles on TH-cam has a fantastic video on this technique! I just showed your fire pit mits to my partner ( who is notorious for hating gloves, hats, scarves and sweaters lol) and he actually said he would like a pair so he can eat while outside on his breaks in the winter. Say no more, I already ordered some yarn for them!
the timing of this is so funny, I just got to the point where I'm confident enough with socks to start exploring other heels and toes! I was also impatiently waiting for my circular needle set to arrive so I could get back to my sweater lol, so I distracted myself by teaching myself a new sock toe AND figuring out how to translate the circular pattern to DPNs (I'm really proud of that part!!)
This might be kind of late but I LOVE THE COLORS! I love the colors of Purple and Gold together but the high school I went to had Purple and Gold as their colors so I am all for it! It will be amazing when it is finished! Beautiful color choices!
I have the same thoughts as another viewer. Your couch looks like that blue you bought and you have what appears to be yellow pillows. It looks good together and as long as your husband likes the colours, it will be great.
Love this video.. and love that you went over the sock so thoroughly. I still haven't tried to tackle one (fear)... but, I will, soon, I hope. That yarn you used is beautiful! The nose tickle rub was hilarious with the music. I laughed and laughed and replayed it. ;). love, hugs, prayers.
I'm so glad you mentioned your newsletter, I had to confirm my email!! Loved this episode, really feels like we're just having coffee and a knit chat ❤️ I'm going to have to go back to NM in the early spring I think, as I have to sell my Mom's house. And there's a second skien of yarn I packed somewhere, that belongs in a sweater I'm making, and weirdly, I have to rent a moving truck and drive family heirlooms across the country back with me to NJ of all things... Quite a year it will be. It always surprises me how NM and the Southwest have become like a second home to me, in a way, since my folks are retired there some 17 years ago. ❤️ 🌶️ 🌵
I let a sweater, color work, sit for a month because something wasn't hitting me right. After that month it hit me, it was that I needed to work one more repeat on the body for it to hit where I like my sweaters. Now it's moving along nicely and I'm very happy.
Newer subscriber, and I just wanted to say “hi” to everyone! I personally do not knit (yet), but I just find your channel and podcast so relaxing. The comments are always nice, and I just really enjoy your overall vibe. Thank you for sharing your growth and wisdom ☺️.
Hi Tayler, glad your son and rest of family are all well! You have motivated me to go back and make modifications to my theoretically finished Love Note sweater I "finished" last year. I'm not loving the cropped length and am just going to tink back the ribbing and knit on a few more inches. It was my first adult sweater and I want to love it. Thank you for the motivation!! Also, I love the colors of the sweater you're knitting for your husband. That dark plum/navy is calling to me. I have the Cambridge Jacket by Ann Budd in my queue to knit for my son who is heading off to college in the fall and I think that color would be wonderful.
I'm so glad you will reknit the hem on Frankensweater. I think it was a bit snug for the pattern. It needs to be a bit more drapey. Can't wait. Ps, I love it when you say you're going to finish something, then you don't. That's real life and I understand. You never need to apologize. It makes you real and so relatable. That's why I watch you rather than other TH-cam knitters. Loved the bewitched nose twitch overdub!
Hi Taylor! I’m with you, I like to have two and usually three projects going at once. That way I can skip around to what makes me happy to knit on that day. I so enjoy your podcast, halve a lovely evening 💖 Carmen
I love the colors for your husband's sweater, wonder if there is enough contrast between the gray and the yellow green color, that is my only observation however. it will be beautiful im sure.
Hi y’all! Thank you for joining me today. It’s a full show so be sure to share your thoughts here in the comments! ❤ #knittingpodcasts #woolneedleshands
Personally, I love the colour choices for the Atlas sweater. I think it will look really cool. Also love the Versal sweater colour choice. Definitely would work on that for a while before finishing the Frankensweater. Again, personally if something bugs me on a project I will redo it. Spending time and energy on any given project warrants the time spent to fix it, especially if it isn't a whole lot that needs to be frogged and redone. Always worth the time if you end up liking and wearing it.
I think the colours for your husband's sweater work well together. You're wearing similar colours in this episode, minus the grey, that shows the sweater will look great!
I think the sweater will be lovely. 😊 I think what is throwing you off is the missing dark outline in pattern. I would pop this in Paint and see what it will look like colorwise! 😄
Your mitts are beautiful. My go to short row heel pattern is the shadow wrap heel by The Chilly Dog. She has 2 versions, version 2 being fantastic. Videos showing step by step are so helpful.
The Boomerang-Heel was the first heel I learned to knit. I think it's quite popular in germany.. There's also a good way with "shadow wraps" to get rid of the holes. I like the Boomerang-Heel because it fits nicely and tight
I think the atlas will be fantastic. Without all the purple blue to contrast the other colors I don’t think you are getting the right vibe….yet. I think it will come together magically in the full sweater.
German short rows look very smooth (in a raglan for instance, you won't be able to tell where the short row-rows were unless you knitted it yourself), there's no wrapping and no yarn overs and most importantly: No gaps. At all.
GSRs are the only kind i can make look decent 🙂. Love the plum+mustard+ gray colorway! a few years ago, i made a swtr w/ all food-name colors: eggplant, mustard, apple green, basil, blueberry--they work together, maybe bc of what Deb said below? damn, now i'm hungry...happy knitting!
If you like a short row heel I think you might really like the shadow warp short row heel by earth tones girl. Denise has several tutorial videos and has also written a pattern. I absolutely love how this heel turns out. It looks smooth and even and no holes. Also very fun to knit which is a big bonus. Lol
I think once you have the whole sweater in the blue/plum color, the grey and yellowish color will show up as great accents. They are pretty prominent in the swatch, but won't be as much in the sweater. I've only done heel flaps so far, but might have to try short rows. I am working on my first two-at-a-time socks, so since they are already an experiment.....
That heel sounded really familiar after you mentioned knitting all the way around in between the two halves of the heel. I believe that's the same heel that Norman (NimbleNeedles, or NimbleNeedlez?? I can't remember the spelling) does in his toe-up sock tutorial, and he demonstrates the whole thing in the video, in case anyone is interested but has trouble with just written instructions.
I think your husband’s sweater will be stunning! Also, I can empathize with you about putting your Frankensweater aside for a bit. I’m making the Granny Apple cardi for my daughter, and it’s been in timeout for several months because when knitting the left and right front pieces at the same time and after several increases I had the number of stitches I should have cast on (!). A few days ago I took the yearn out, cast on, and now I’m forty rows into both pieces. Sometimes a timeout is the answer to a problem.
Yes palette cleansers! I just made it half way through my second try at a sweater swatch and I grabbed cotton yarn and I am making a wash cloth. 😂 So this woolen spun yarn!?!I am very new to knitting my first 2 second clothing project I made a super bulky yarn oversized cardigan and I need to weight train before I can wear it 😂😂 it is so heavy! So I might make another cardigan out of this light weight yarn. I want it big enough to wear as a robe like thing in the winter, so you don’t have to try to hard to imagine me dropping to my knees when I tried it on. Btw I made it in panels or I would have never finished. Have a good day! Thanks for all the much needed info I always get when I watch your videos.
I think the swatch is great and the sweater will be beautiful. Maybe you are having second thoughts because the original sweater is what you fell in love with, but you chose to go a completely different way as far as color is concerned. I, my self, am in a knitting funk. I've knit a sweater with the same yarn twice and I am going to rip it out for the third time. I'm thinking I'll just ball it up, put it away and do something else, because I'm tired of knitting the yarn! In about 3 weeks we will be having a yarn show here in Tacoma Washington. The Red Alder fiber arts retreat. They have it in the Murano Hotel. I only go the opening day, first thing, for a chance to buy some great yarn. But they do have classes and all that also, over the whole weekend. I'm hoping new yarn will get my creative mind moving again. Watching your podcasts really do help with the creative process. I enjoy all of your podcasts. I also love your yarn.
I think that your husbands sweater will turn out ‘lovely’! Trust your gut and go forward. Once you have a larger balance of the colors it may indeed completely change your mind. Thanks for another fun podcast! And… loved that bewitched nose twitch, you’ve definitely got some magic! ✨
I think that sweater for your husband is going to look amazing!! The colors are beautiful and I think they're working together really well. I'm so excited to see this all knit up!!!
Your swatch is beautiful! Here in the UK we have a yarn Festival in March coming up and I’m tempted to find yarn similar to your fire pit mitts, your pattern has been to my list of things to make and I’m inspired to make them once I finished the sock I’m knitting
the frankensweater! I have been following your progress with it with great interest 😆 i love it. I think it will look great without the decreases before the bottom ribbing, and i also think a slit down the ribbing would look awesome. its my favorite when sweaters have the side slit on the bottom on both sides and the back ribbing is a bit longer than the front, it also drapes down quite nicely because there is no chance of bunching. my favourtie things knitwear sweater no. 14 uses this technique and I love it!
Your husband’s sweater will be so beautiful! I am so excited for the kal! I’ve never made my husband a sweater and am ready to change this. I love your podcast! So happy to see your face more often.
I would like a greater contrast between the gray and the chartreuse. One or the other could be over dyed to be more saturated. I think the values are BOTH medium light and the navy is a nice dark value. But, maybe some like a subtle design where it all blends together? Photo it and put the photo thru your black and white filter and see what I mean. In quilting, we say “Value does all the work and color gets all the credit”
As you were saying that purple and yellow together bug you, I was noticing that your sofa in the background looks purplish-blue on screen and it has a mustard yellow pillow which look „lovely“ together, to quote you!
Your Franken sweater: I agree with you on the rib. I prefer looser fit at the rib and a split hem; some years ago it seemed the bottom rib was always tighter; knit with smaller needles to pull it in. The Versal sweater, I was surprised to see an Aran weight knit with size 8 US, must be very dense.
My new heel that I love is the shadow wrap heel by Purl Knit. With this one you don't do the knit row before you start the second half. I only do short row heels now.
My latest Frankensweater is a squishy oversize drop shoulder bottom up seamed garter stitch pullover with bishop sleeves and a fold over rib neck in a worsted/Aran weight yarn. I can't fit my winter coat over its gargantuan sleeves! It is in the naughty corner while I contemplate frogging and a redesign. So I cast on purple socks with shades of green for the contrast colourwork (since I have so many green remnants) as my palate cleanser. If you can call 80sts on size zero needles TAAT colourwork a palate cleanser lol.
I didn’t know that you were from Henderson! We drove through there last summer on our way from the Hoover Dam to my aunty’s in Las Vegas. Such a great trip (we’re from England, with family in the States).
I'm knitting a Versal sweater right now because I was inspired by your frankensweater when you first started working on it! I thought the fishermen's wool looked so lovely and you sold me on it so I looked for Aran weight patterns that seemed to have a similar collar to the one on your frankensweater (I wasn't willing to try to improvise my own, I've never finished a sweater before--don't ask how many I've started 🤣). I'm working on the sleeves now and I'm so excited, it has been such a fun project so far, so thank you for the inspiration!
Taylor how about substitute the isolated yellow motive for blue (I mean the motive that is in between the yellow/blue) it is just a suggestion. Having say that, I like the colors and I am sure you are going to make an awesome sweater
I have opted to undo something that could be easily redone. I find that there could be so much regret when not taking the opportunity. I designed a sweater and working on the prototype. I too got the the bottom ribbing and unraveled when it didn't meet my expectations (mine was sloppy looking because the needle size wasn't small enough). I will be picking up yarn I ordered from a local yarn shop, as to make my husband a cardigan he's thinking of having in his wardrobe. I'm going for solid colour with simple structure but a slightly wider collar that will blend into the button panel... My project is now to get the measurements, make a swatch, and design the garment with its construct.. I would love to join any knit along but currently working 6 days a week, and taking what time I can to catch up on other tasks.... Can't wait to see how your projects progress
Wonderful podcast Taylor. Love your colors for your hubbies sweater. Maybe if you want to see a difference, why not change the yellow to where the gray is and put the blue with the gray, just a suggestion.
Oh my dear, I absolutely love the boomerang heal. I have tried to find out more about it for over 20 years….and regua instructions were horrendous….finally, thanks to TH-cam I found it….so happy. I tried many, ore but, that’s my favourite. Love the colours you chose for your husband…..you do do beautiful wirk.
i think your swatch is beautiful and will look fantastic. But could you add a lace weight to the yellow to tweak just a bit? Maybe your jupiter mohair? you should go in excited for such a big project, if you can. Good luck!!

Yes! The colors go nicely together. Feel good about it.😊
Hey Tayler, have you heard of Earthtones Girl’s short row shadow wrap heel tutorial? It’s SPECTACULAR! Pretty easy to follow, no boomerang.
I love the color combo for your husband's sweater!

Agreed! See comment above. 😊
I was going to add the same comment. The heel is called the Shadow wrap heel. But this Boomerang one looks interesting as well.
I love the color of the sweater you are wearing in this video 😍

When I saw the skeins, I was doubtful too, but your swatch is lovely! They are perfect color wheel companions! Wonderful work!

Thank you for your time and know you are being so much joy to the knitting community! 🎉
The info on the boomerang short row heel is great as well as the tips on the mitts. Thank you!
I agree with other posters here--that color combination is great!
Thank You! I look forward to your chats and it is my way of decompressing too!
If you try to color/draw it on a piece of paper to fully visualize it, you will feel more secure in your choice. I love the purple and yellow combo!

Thank you Liesl. This means so much to me. ❤
I love your sweater colors. Really. 😊😊😊
I have the same thoughts as another viewer. Your couch looks like that blue you bought and you have what appears to be yellow pillows. It looks good together and as long as your husband likes the colours, it will be great.
I love your color choices together! ❤️ 😍 Wow! It's going to be beautiful.
Thank you Elaine!
Thanks for the podcast Tayler. I'm happy your channel popped up on my YT recommed to watch feed. 😊👍
I’m in Hope, NJ - what town are you from ???
@@PamKnitsToo we're near Princeton
I let a sweater, color work, sit for a month because something wasn't hitting me right. After that month it hit me, it was that I needed to work one more repeat on the body for it to hit where I like my sweaters. Now it's moving along nicely and I'm very happy.
Newer subscriber, and I just wanted to say “hi” to everyone! I personally do not knit (yet), but I just find your channel and podcast so relaxing. The comments are always nice, and I just really enjoy your overall vibe. Thank you for sharing your growth and wisdom ☺️.
I giggled at the sound affect. Kinda reminded me of Bewitched.
I so enjoy your podcast, halve a lovely evening 💖
Carmen
I love the colors for your husband's sweater, wonder if there is enough contrast between the gray and the yellow green color, that is my only observation however. it will be beautiful im sure.
I use the boomerang heel… it’s super easy once you get going, I add 5 rows in the middle to give a little more room and a better fit.
Hi y’all! Thank you for joining me today. It’s a full show so be sure to share your thoughts here in the comments! ❤

Morning
I think once you block the sweater swatch for your husband it will be great and the finished sweater will be so awesome!
Always looking forward to these podcasts! About to finish the first sock to my 2nd knit socks!
If you like a short row heel I think you might really like the shadow warp short row heel by earth tones girl. Denise has several tutorial videos and has also written a pattern. I absolutely love how this heel turns out. It looks smooth and even and no holes. Also very fun to knit which is a big bonus. Lol
Hahahaha. Reading other comments I see that several other people have also suggested the shadow wrap short row heel …. It really is that good ❤
Love the color combination for your husband’s sweater...stunning! 😍 Looking forward to watching the progress, and seeing the final product!
I’m going to scale down the pattern for a child’s size. I want a family of mitts. This pattern is spectacular for the adults.
I, love how the colors play out for your husband’s sweater 😊
I think that once you add more of the "plum" it will tone down the brightness of the yellow and you will like it more.
So this woolen spun yarn!?!I am very new to knitting my first 2 second clothing project I made a super bulky yarn oversized cardigan and I need to weight train before I can wear it 😂😂 it is so heavy!
Whooo!! Love the choice of the Green Mountain Spinnery yarn (says the extremely biased Vermonter😅)!
the frankensweater!
I like the color combo for your husband’s sweater! You need to just start it…I think you’ll end up Loving it!
As you were saying that purple and yellow together bug you, I was noticing that your sofa in the background looks purplish-blue on screen and it has a mustard yellow pillow which look „lovely“ together, to quote you!
Lol! Totally. But that sofa is straight navy/cobalt blue velvet and that for some reason, to me, is indeed quite lovely. ❤️
I LOVE the colors of your husband’s sweater, can’t wait to see it done!!!
Also, I totally look forward to your podcast every week ! Thank you
I’ve made the Firepit Mitts twice and plan on making more.
I absolutely LOVE the colors you picked for your husband’s sweater!! I think they look great together and it will be amazing!
on the hubby sweater i would knit it grey with blue colorwork outline and yellow accents
I think the colors you chose for your husband's sweater are very complimentary and it will be beautiful.
Taylor how about substitute the isolated yellow motive for blue (I mean the motive that is in between the yellow/blue) it is just a suggestion. Having say that, I like the colors and I am sure you are going to make an awesome sweater
Love the yarn for the KAL. If it too purple forward, what about maybe overdyeing it with a little navy?
Those are beautiful colors together!!!
Just found out about your podcast from a friend and I enjoyed it so much. Thank you! I’m definitely a new fan!😊
Good luck!!
