Hi Tayler! So honored to see my fiber in your hands!!! After all the years of watching your episodes, this is a surreal moment for me! Thank you so much for the shout out!
Your first spun skein is beautiful! It will be a lovely reminder of how your spinning adventure started. In a few months you'll be amazed at your progress! p.s. I've never been any good at the drop spindle; you'll have to share your tricks once you've mastered it 🙂

I’m Nikki from Connecticut and I love that you’re spinning now. I need to get back to spinning for 15 minutes a day myself. I have an espinner from dreaming robots that are 3-D printed and very reasonably priced if you’re looking to try but can’t afford a wheel right now. Also an espinner is great for plying when you have another spin on your wheel. It’s a rabbit hole for sure but so fun. I’m hoping to splurge on a wheel hopefully later this year. Happy spinning and making to everyone! 🧶♥️

As an artist, value is so important. Value as in dark, middle dark/light, and light. If you can tuck away the fact that “value does the work, but color gets the glory” you cant go wrong. So glad you took a photo - Helps you see the values! So important when producing your craft. 😊🧶 Knit on!

hi! I think this might be the first time I've commented on your videos, so I'll introduce myself. I'm Charlotte. Been watching for a couple of weeks now and I love your content. Just thought I'd pop in and say that I love your first skein of handspun. as far as I know, handspun is definitely something you can use as a word to describe yarn spun on a wheel. you're still using your hands after all. I believe they are interchangeable terms. I also haven't used my first skein of yarn. its just kind of.... there. sitting there watching me. my first skein was on a drop spindle. its great to see yet another fiber channel that's falling down the spinning rabbit hole! I also love that you're exposing yourself to as many types of wool as possible at the moment too, because that will totally boost your spinning game super fast!

Hi, I'm Melanie and live in the UK. I always look forward to spending my Monday morning coffee and breakfast with you! I've always been a hat knitting lover but starting on jumpers this year. I love Fair Isle patterns, find the charts really meditative and relaxing. At the moment I can't stop knitting! I had a slump following the sad death of my husband from ALS/MND in 2020, he was my 'model' for all my hat knits. I started knitting again towards the end of last year when I found your podcast. Now I can't stop. xx

Hello! I'm Ashley from Louisiana. Your excitement over beginning spinning has reinvigorated my spinning journey! I bought a wheel years ago, spun a few skeins, but never felt confident enough to adjust settings on my wheel or anything beyond the basics. This past fall I bought some fiber to jumpstart my spinning journey again and I got about halfway through the first braid before I felt brave enough to adjust some settings on my wheel. 😅 Then your videos reinspired me all over again! I finished the braid that had been languishing on my wheel and now I think I finally have gotten my head around the whorls and ratios. 🎉
All that is to say is that your spinning journey has helped me on mine. The best piece of advice I got from a local spinner was the knit with your handspun. Maybe save that first skein for memories and to see how far you have come, but once you start to make skeins you want to knit with, it is easy to stash it because it feels "too special". But there really is some magic in knitting with handspun. The yarn is so bouncy and has this life to it that is addicting to knit with. Plus knitting with your handspun will give you the feedback you need to know how you like your colors to land or how many plies you like, etc.
Best of luck with your spinning adventures and I can't wait to see your progress and thoughts on the craft as you continue your journey!

Tayler, maybe you could display your first skein of handspun yarn in a clear vessel; such as a large glass cookie jar, something with a lid on it. Display it like the work of art it is. 😊 I have been watching JullianEve and Lisa on Soulful Spinning podcast for a while now, and I think this is the year I'm going to start spinning also. There's so many benefits to learning to spin. Thanks for the inspiration. ♥🐑

I found when learning to spin that using a nicer fiber like merino made it easier to spin more consistent yarn. The first yarn I used was a non-specific sheep wool top that I was given by my dad. I had to process the entire top myself and found it very unmanageable! Then I bought some malabrigo roving and it was a whole different experience! Don't sleep on your roving just because it was not 'cheap' to practice with, it makes all the difference!

Thank you for this video! I tried spinning several years ago with a drop spindle and I was so disappointed in my first try that I just put everything in a bag and threw it in my craft closet. Watching your video, I realized that my first effort looked like your first effort. Seeing how proud you are of that first skein made me realize that maybe I wasn’t a failure at it - I was just new. This was before TH-cam and I became besties so I didn’t have access to helpful videos. I was trying to learn from a book. You have given me the motivation to dig out that first effort and try again. Thank you for your honesty in showing your first skein but even more for your pride in it!

Thanks for explaining your thoughts processes on your projects and for not being afraid to come back and say you were wrong or changed your mind! I started a spinning class yesterday, and we started with the drop spindle. We were sent home with the spindle and a bunch of roving to spin into yarn by next week. Next week, we start on a wheel, so I am patiently enduring...hoping that I find my rhythm.
I was injured in a car accident in 2008, and ended up having two spinal fusions--after a multitude of problems along the way--at C5-6 in order to fix most of the damage. Needless to say, I have to take frequent breaks because my neck muscles get tight in a hurry. (I'll be 66 in a few months, so I don't think it's an age thing yet. Things have been pretty sucky since the accident in general!)
However...I did find my personal groove quickly...which is a sturdy, thicker yarn that I like quite well. I felt like my ancestors were speaking to me through the process. Weird but not weird.
I returned to knitting with the new year...and signed up for all these classes in sequential order because...in my acquired wisdom...they seemed to be integral as a whole. In April, we will be doing our first ever Spring Break Weaving Camp! Yet another necessary skill for my arsenal!
AND...I bought some raw wool off Ebay that should arrive mid-week...it should be a sweater quantity--for me, anyway--once I go through the process of cleaning, combing, carding, and spinning it into yarn. I will take that project on via guidance of some TH-cam videos. Thanks for the inspiration!

First time posting here! Just wanted to let you know that spinning is a lot of practice, and if you purchased some fiber, just try it out. Everything is about trying, failing, and keeping it up because at some point, you'll see the progress you've made.
I would recommend you to try the School of Sweet Georgia from Felicia Lo. That's where I learned to spin, weave, and now knit. In her spinning lessons, she really explains detail by detail about what to look for and how to learn from your mistakes. There's also an amazing study group.
Hope you are having a beautiful day.

It was such a joy to see your enthusiasm, happiness, and pride in your first skein of yarn. I don't think it needs to be knit into anything as long as you walk into the room and see it laying on your desk, and it still makes you smile, then it should stay there so you can see, touch and enjoy it everyday! Wonderful first yarn!!!! I don't even know where my first yarn is anymore. You could make a funky hat if you can't stand not using it. Your pink yarn is adorable. Can't wait to see it finished. I didn't know you had a drop spindle! I learned to spin on a Turkish drop spindle. I love it, but I love my wheel too. I'm so glad you joined Tashi's spinning mafia!! Welcome!

Hi! I'm Claudia from Montreal. As a fairly new spinner myself (It's only been 3 years) I remember having all the same feelings as you are having right now and it's so much fun! I noticed that your yarn is a singles. If you want to knit something with a super thick and thin yarn, sometimes doing a 2 ply is a great option. The thick and thin parts end up balancing each other a little in the plying process. Anyway, I would absolutely keep the first skein as a beautiful thing to display in your craft room, it's gorgeous.

You could knit a pillow cover with your first skeins! Or keep the first one to bring you joy as your skill progresses.

Save your first month's worth of productive spinning and make a blanket, scarf, or shawl to see your progress. Beautiful colors.

I made the Winter Cuddler last year for a new great grand baby. Like you, it was more for mom than baby. Used a soft sage to match the nursery colors, but this pattern had my granddaughter’s vibe all over it. She absolutely loved it, and I was so pleased with the pattern and beautiful result. Highly recommend.

Greetings from northern New Brunswick, Canada 🇨🇦🤗. I share your excitement in alll your fibery goodness! Isn’t spinning exciting! I still have my first skein that I spun and plied from my first spinning wheel. It hangs up nearby where I practice most of my crafty indulgences. Love your channel. Keep on learning and keep on sharing😉. Elaine

Congrats on yarn first handspun hank. I have yarn that is intentionally spun that way, it gives a beautiful texture with the right pattern. What you did looks amazing.

You should make a square out of some of your spun yarn. Make a square from each of your first yarns. Make them into a memory lap blanket.

I call both drop spindle and wheel spun “handspun”. I’d keep the first skein just to appreciate and to benchmark as you move forward. Be sure to attach a dated label to it with fiber content and comments…even the music you listened to while spinning it!
Your indie dyed roving braids are to die for! Have fun with them.

thinking about your handspun/homespun skein of excitement..... I am picturing it curled up in a glass bowl or glass cylinder on display in your lovely room. It's such a beautiful first skein!

Hi Tayler! Kate from Portland OR here. I wanted to say you could make a cool woven wall hanging with your first skein of hand spun! Then you could hang it on the wall and remember your first hand spun. Also "art yarn" is amazing in weaving and really adds to the texture. You can't go wrong. I use yarn I can't resist buying but don't want to knit with in my weaving projects. (Caution: this gives you permission to buy all kinds of weird yarn haha!)
