Y'all, the bind-off I'm talking about here IS NOT a three-needle bind off. It's a tubular bind-off or sewn bind-off. Just making sure you're paying attention. 😉

The first video I watched on your channel was you first spin-a-rama type where you combined some weird fiber/objects together. It seemed silly at first BUT was I wrong. It opened up the creative thinking in my mind about spinning. I binged your art yarn videos and I hadn’t even spun anything yet. I’ve been watching Jillian Eve for almost a year now because I want to spin as well. I did take a drop spindle class last fall and I bought an EEW from Dreaming Robots. I didn’t want to break the bank until I got myself a little practice. I found my drop spindle class helped with drafting because it is a bit hard to draft and spin oh boy! I feel you 1000% now throw treadling in there like chew gum, walk, and rub your belly 😂 can’t wait for your first skein!
I live near Richmond, VA and have participated in handcrafts (sewing, knitting, crochet) for nearly 60 years. Your’s is the first knitting “podcast” I found on TH-cam - a new concept to me. I started watching during Thanksgiving weekend - I had just been diagnosed with breast cancer (stage 1, very small tumor). I watched EVERY video during the period of testing - mammogram, ultrasound, 2 MRIs, 2 biopsies, surgery and path reports. Thanks for keeping me company. I am currently following another TH-cam knitter during chemotherapy… who knows what will happen during radiation!? I am inspired to knit and crochet more than ever by TH-cam. Thank you so very much!
I just found your channel today. I am 69, I live in eastern Washington state. I learned the knit stitch in third grade, I didn’t learn to Purl until adult hood. I didn’t become an obsessive knitter until about 15 years ago when my hands just started itching to knit. Over the years I have tried almost all fiber related crafts; garment sewing, embroidery, counted cross stitch, weaving, drop spindle spinning, quilting, appliqué, overdying fabric, crochet, knitting just about everything except tatting and bobbin lace. I am blessed that Paradise Fibers is my LYS for that “some day” when I get my own spinning wheel.

I made thar blanket for a friend who was recovering from a serious illness. I wanted her to have something cozy and comforting. I am sure that anyone who has to be up feeding their little one in the middle of the night would appreciate the warm squishiness of that blanket, not to mention how pretty it is. Love that color, btw! I might have to make another one in that color!
Hi my name is Debi and I'm a returning viewer and subscriber! I live in a small village in South Wales UK and I knit and crochet. I learnt to knit when I was about 6, I wanted to make clothing for my Sindy and Barbie dolls and also baby clothes for my baby dolls!! I learnt to crochet when I was in my teens but could only make Granny Squares and blankets, so in 2022, when we were locked down I decided to get better at crochet and I even learnt Tunisian Crochet (thank you You Tube) I love your Podcasts and watch them when I get home from work with a cup of coffee!! I would love to learn to spin, and have several Apacas and make and dye my own wool, but that's just a dream 😃😄😀
Nice wheel. I am a senior and I always wanted to spin. Took a class at our local guild and I can make yarn but on a Turkish drop spindle. I took my class right before Covid and had to learn on my own. Glad to say I can make pretty decent fingering yarn. I have too much stashed yarn to make too much. That’s far enough down the rabbit hole for me. Great place to start to learn to draw you yarn and get consistency. They insisted you drop spin first before you are allowed to use a wheel. Worked for me. Living in Ottawa, a retired well established senior, still teaching people to knit and quilt and knitting as fast as I can, Thanks for a lovely time together. Good Morning! I have been faithfully watching your videos for the last few months but neglected to introduce myself. I am a knitter and crocheter from the Greater Philadelphia area. I always appreciate your warmth and yarn wisdom and insight.
I realized that I never introduced myself when I joined 3 weeks ago. My name is Janet, a 21-year-old 1st-gen (Korean American) gal here. My dad is a minister, which is why I've moved around so much and giving me so much exposure to different ppl and environments, prepping for my adult life. I've been knitting since I was 8/9. 2022 was the year I began knitting garments, my first pair of socks, and a sweater for myself (still in progress). In the past, I've made several scarves, a simple coloworked baby hat, & a gigantic blanket made with Bernat Blanket yarn for a member of my church who had cancer. I've also started a charity project (with the help of a church member) in 2010 called "Knit a Square," where you knit/crochet an 8inx8in square with long ends. This was so the ppl in charge could easily weave the squares tog for afghans for the children of South Africa. Did it again in 2018, but it wasn't as huge as the first one. I'm still glad I did them, though (at 2 different churches). I also crochet, began around the same time. I made a few blankets, scarves, granny squares, & lots of plush (froggies, bees, etc)! I also did a fundraiser in the fall of 2019 to do a charity event with Feeding America & my church's youth group. This was achieved by selling crochet dish scrubbies, made from an eyelash yarn mad specifically for doing the dishes. It was a huge hit and probably the biggest thing I've achieved and had so much support from all ppl around me. Besically, I've done great things with these amazing fiber crafts as a kid, making myself proud that I can use it for magical and helpful things. I've gotten lots of yarn second-hand through church ppl and purchasing my own occasionally. It's amazing what you can do with something you love so passionately.
The bind off you talked about for your Franken-sweater is truly so so good! Any time I am binding off 1x1 ribbing, I'll do this cause the finish is so worth it. I have never heard it references as a "three needle bind off" though. I have always thought of that as having literally 3 needles, and usually it's to seam two pieces of knit fabric together with their live stitches. This bind of is "sewn tubular" or "sewn Italian" bind off, if you're searching the Tube for tutorials!!! :)
OMG, you describing your first time trying to spin is so right on! It made me laugh out loud! The good news is if you work at it just a few minutes a day you will get the hang of spinning the fiber quickly. I started spinning last Summer so I'm a newbie too & it is just so much fun!
I have to giggle about the image in my head of you jumping right in, like you know what you are doing! I'm reminded of when I sit down at the piano, and pull out music I played proficiently 30 years ago, and think it's going to go well! WRONG! I just returned from my weekly spin-in with my friend, and wished you could have been with us. It was decades ago when I taught individual women to spin that I realized I wanted to get my education degree. Your candid tale brought back the memories of those first time spinners’ own apprehensions and their eventual ‘aha’ moments as they created their first 12” of yarn. Yes, I got the degree, and became a reading specialist and linguistics professor, but it’s in my retirement that I most treasure my frequent spin-ins: creating yarns, challenging myself with a different blend (merino with mint fiber, for example) that makes each day an opportunity to keep learning. It’s ok to have a little hubris. Joyous spinning!

I have the utmost respect for you budgeting to be able to get something more expensive (like a spinning wheel) and then actually sticking to it. Often times I see bloggers who just go 🍌 when it comes to their purchases and it almost makes me feel like an inferior person/maker. So THANK YOU for your honesty and transparency on that
I go by Ereshkigal online, I live in the Dallas, TX area and for work I travel for months at a time which is great because I have no domestic responsibilities on the road and I fill that time with knitting & crocheting. I've knitted & crocheted for a little over a year now. I'm really enjoying the fiber arts community and all of the fellow misfit toys I meet.
I bought an e-spinner (electric eel wheel 6) as like a pre-divorce gift to myself and taught myself by just whacking at stuff until it worked. Impossible to know if expert advice would have helped. Truly impossible. But my best learning has been doing the paradise fibers fiber of the month club box and watching Jillian's streams and unboxing. I often would never have bought many of the fibers myself, so it's been a fun sort of fiber study course. I've been spinning the boxes roughly the same way because that lets me combo things for other projects. My tips: don't try to spin for a project early on. Just make pretty yarn and TAKE NOTES on how you spun it. Getting literally any yarn made itself is the project. I teach programming and it's basically the same: you're building foundational knowledge, so the key isn't the hours put in but the number of sleep cycles between. Get mad, take breaks, don't let the fibers break you.

Congrats on your new spinning wheel! I have a Lendrum DT too, and I love it. It's a fabulous wheel to learn on, and you can always purchase the additional fliers down the road. I just graduated to using the fast flier after spinning on mine for 4 years. Good luck with your spinning journey! Hi, long time watcher, infrequent commenter from Mallorca (Spain). I’m watching this while I Kitchener up the toes of a pair of socks on my lunch break. If you’re interested in making a sew bing off go faster you can put the needle trough the first stitch knit wise, immediately go onto the second stitch along purlwise and then pull all the yarn tail through. It halved the number of times you have to pull all that yarn trough the stitches. Another option is too break off the mohair a round or two before the bind off and not deal with the sticky yarn at all. The edge ends up a slightly different texture, but you’d only notice if you’re looking very closely.
I totally stand behind your thoughts on the “baby blanket”, my FAVORITE blankets I received when my babies were smaller were the ones that I could throw over both of us during a contact nap or lay on my lap while nursing. Not every blanket needs to be a swaddle!
Had so many giggles Tayler, you will click with spinning I know it. I’ve been doing it for 50 yrs and it’s the best. Always had Ashford ones but only got a double treadle 10 yrs ago. A game changer for me as you can slow the wheel right down to fix something. Also love Jillian Eve videos, have fun 💗
I was exactly the same! Watching all those videos before my wheel arrived and thinking: "That looks just fine. I'm gonna make it!" Dreaming of the unperfect but recognizable yarn I would produce right away. Than struggling to turn the wheel with my feet and drafting the fibre all at once. My "yarn" just broke and broke and broke again 😄 It was so frustrating! For me it helped to go very slow and it soon got better. Happy spinning Tayler. Bravo on the Lendrum! A great first wheel. A great wheel all together. It was the second wheel I got and it is so well designed and so versatile. I also enjoy Jillianeve and Tashi. Tashi has not been spinning very long but is so far ahead of me, a spinner since 2000, that I am learning a lot from her and she is pulling me out of my spinning rug. Jillianeve is also getting me inspired. You will do well if you stick with these two fantastic spinners. And fiber processors. That's another adventure awaiting you.....
I subscribed a few weeks ago. I am a knitter and crochet-er(?) from way back as a young girl. I am 71 now. I am from Oregon but now live in Washington State on the coast. I spent many years spinning also, until I had to go to work in 1991. Haven't spun since because my wheel fell off a table and broke some pieces. (Don't ever put a spinning wheel on the table!) I need to get it repaired now that I am retired. I am excited that you are discovering spinning also! (as per JillianEve below)

Love your podcast! A quick tip for the tubular bind off, you don't need to pull the tail through with every stitch. For the stitch that stays on the needle put it through the correct way for that stitch, pull it through enough to move your needle, then put it through the stich that is coming off the needle(which ever direction for that stitch) and then pull the tail through all of the way. You end up pulling the tail all of the way through half the time and it's much faster. Hope that makes sense and helps!
Love to see this new chapter for you. I took a spinning class just prior to covid and my instructor had us start just treadling, no yarn, no fibre, nothing. Practice stopping and starting the wheel with your treadling. I started watching Evie on her channel - she really is a treasure - so interesting and informative and full of energy. I bought a DT Lendrum as my first wheel - I like that they are portable too, if you have a guild near you, I would encourage you to join. My second wheel (second-hand purchase that I could not pass up) was an old Ashford Traditional. I use both and enjoy them both for different reasons. It is a lot of fun. I started weaving this year and was a knitter for 20 years prior and I have to say, if I could pick only one thing, I think it would be spinning - so relaxing and satisfying. I look forward to seeing more of your videos.
Welcome to the rabbit hole that is spinning!!! I started with a drop spindle which is really nice for learning how to draft, then i got multiple supported spindle and a wheel. It truly is a beautiful craft and knitting with your handspun is the most amazing feeling!!!
I feel like it did help me get a better understanding of fiber since it's much slower than the wheel. But I also know tons of people who started with the wheel and never got into spindle spinning 🤷🏻♀️
I can very much relate to the thrill of learning a new fiber craft. A year ago I dove deep into folk embroidery and cross stitch. Then last May I started teaching myself to sew. Now last month I started knitting as well. I’m currently working on my first sweater and first pair of socks. It is a trick balancing all of these but so very fun.

I grew out of my Ashford Kiwi pretty quickly. I hear that Lendrum wheels are amazing. I love that you purchased this from The Woolery. I live about 1.5 hrs away from there. It’s where I purchased my Kromski Symphony. I learned to spin from Evie from Jillianeve. She’s the best!
Welcome to the land of spinning! Yes it has a steep learning curve, but I found it to be kind of like when I learned to knit--I was pretty awful at first, but once my muscle memory kicked it things "clicked.". I don't want to say I never make spinning or knitting mistakes these days, just that the process is smooth enough that I can focus on color and design rather than just "making yarn." You'll get there!!
Congratulations on your wheel! When I first started spinning 7 or 8 yrs ago, I knew absolutely nothing. I had gone to a demonstration of spinning and weaving and knitting and fell in love with one of the wheels and wanted one. It was a Schacht Ladybug and just had to have one. I learned by watching videos on Craftsy. They were by Amy King, Jacey Boggs Faulkner (from Ply magazine) and Jillian Moreno. ❤ They were very helpful! ❤

Well done, Jon Snow! The first step is to know what you do not know. love your videos, and just give it a little time, and remember to take deep breaths and take your time with the wheel. It will come. Your first yarn will be art yarn, and precious, so please do yourself the favor of keeping it. As you spin each new bobbin you will be able to see progress as compared to the previous bobbin. Just do a little bit a day, maybe ten minutes or so. Congrats to a new spinner!

Good luck with your spinning journey. I did a whole day course where I basically spun all day with someone to guide me and the others on the course. I then decided to get an Ashford kiwi 3, fixed it all together and like you you got all excited about spinning at home. It was a disaster😂, I just couldn’t do it despite having got on all right with supervision. I persevered, had no choice as I’d spent so much on the wheel I had to just keep practicing. Now two years later I can spin. I’ve still got lots I can learn but love it and have knitted shawls, mitts etc with my hand spun. 😊

Love learning new crafting. I took up weaving almost a year ago and love it! I started with a rigid heddle table room that I rented from my LYS. After my first project I purchased a used 4 shaft floor loom and it's constantly busy. I'm reading about fleeces and fiber content but don't think I'm interested in spinning but many in my crafting circle think it will be inevitable. Good luck and enjoy!
Congrats on starting the spinning journey! One thing I didn't realize when I started was that it's really important for the fiber to draft easily. It helps to pre-draft the fiber, especially if it's dyed.

I love that you have decided to start spinning, I am usually spinning when I watch the podcast so very happy to welcome you into the insane world of turning fluff into yarn! I also learned to spin from @JillianEve but I was not as brave as you and started with a drop spindle as the wheels are so expensive and I really didn't want to commit to something before being 110% sure. Let me tell you that drop spindle got dropped SO MANY TIMES! I now have an Ashford eSpinner because our house does not have space for spinning wheel - or so I have been told...! I am excited to come with you on this spinning journey. 6 months from now you will have gorgeous yarn and will love knitting with it!!
Congrats on the spinning wheel - that's so exciting! Will love watching your journey I'm sure. I also love the rhythm of the tubular/Italian/sewn bind off. I always save it until I'm home alone and can just zen with it. Try cutting the furry strand before you start the bind off and just do it with the main yarn. With mohair it's like trying to bind off with velcro so is much easier without it. Thanks for the episode!

Did the same thing with my first wheel. Watched tutorials, assumed I had it down and promptly wasted a bunch of fiber. I kept the “yarn” to keep me humble.
If there is a group of spinners in your area, see if you can find out when/where they meet. That's how I started out and meet with them one evening a week. They're so helpful and generous with showing how to. I started when a friend asked if I wanted to come to her place to spin with a few ladies. I thought she was talking about spinning on stationary bikes...asked her where she was getting the bikes from. Long story short, I love my Lendrum double treadle.
You have come over to the dark side. Spinning is amazing. You will love it. When I started I had a friend who did the pedals while I drafted. That was very helpful for me. Good luck and have fun.
Another tip for learning to spin on a wheel is to use some unspun lopi yarn, basically pencil roving that you don’t have to draft. Once you feel comfortable treadling with the regular yarn, try some unspun so you can see the twist and get a feel for how much twist you need before loading onto the bobbin.
I have had my wheel for 6 months, trying to teach myself. Please please keep sharing how you learn and what you learn. It does feel overwhelming but I am determined. Love your videos ❤
I also have a Lendrum double treadle that I recently acquired at the end of 2022. I got it after a little practice with a drop spindle, which is the only reason I think drafting for a wheel really started making sense. I love the wheel so much more than a drop spindle. I still feel like a new beginner like you, and haven't made anything I feel like I can knit with yet. I've often said in my videos that I feel like I'm on a little boat out at sea, figuring it out, and sometimes I will see another spinner/boat in the distance and be like how do I or what is... and then I'm back in the ocean on my boat, figuring it out. I also loved the story of your husband being like, "Maybe you should try it with yarn.." I can 100% relate and envision that moment! I'm excited for you to be on a spinning journey, and everyone tells me that " you must save your first skein of handspun, because you will never be able to repeat it"
Congratulations!! I started my spinning journey last August on a spindle only planning to spin enough fiber to knit a hat but I got the spinning big and bought a DT Lendrum, too. My wheel spinning has a way to go vs. drop spindle, but I LOVE it. I watched tons of videos before spinning. Now I’m rewatching them and will take an in-person class, too. Have fun!!!

This is my go to bind off for ribbing, usually only takes about 30-45 mins to do the hem of a sweater once I get focused and into the rhythm of it. Pro tip. For the sewn tubular bind off pull the yarn farther through your needle so you are not pulling a mile of yarn through every stitch. Also you can use only the main yarn and not the suri… it won’t be visible and will be ever so much easier to pull the yarn through as you work.
I think the BO you’re using for the Franken Sweater is the Tubular Bind Off, and not the 3 Needles BO. The 3 needles BO, as the name suggests, uses 3 knitting needles to graft 2 pieces of live stitches together by knitting together 1 st from each needle, and slipping the previous st over, like a standard BO. The tubular BO is a sewn BO that needs a tapestry needles to graft sts that belong to the same piece of fabric. One way you can do it is by rearranging the sts on 2 needles, and using the kitchener stitch, or as you explain your video, you can do it on one needle without having to rearrange the sts, but have to do a little dance with the tapestry needle
That is not a 3 needle bind off. I know knitting nomenclature isn’t universal, but a three needle bind off is a join or seam. That’s a sewn bind off. Lovely, but a different thing all together.

Yayyyy! You got a wheel! A lendrum! You’re taking up spinning! This is honestly my favorite part of the whole craft. So excited for you and what it brings to the channel.
So the batt you showed us was very lovely. My own personal opinion is that batts are difficult for beginners, especially depending on fiber content. The Woolery sells a blend called Heinz 57. It’s an undyed fiber and what they give you to try in the store (I’ve spent several hours there testing wheels.) It’s super easy to spin with and comes at about $15 a pound. One pound of fiber is usually what it takes to really get going with spinning. Just buy a bag and practice.

LisaR : Great choice for your wheel . Ive been spinning on and off ( babies:) for a quite a while ..Your wheel is an easy one to learn on bc it's responsive , easy to treadle - and simple to set up . Yet - You'll be able to easily spin for many years without ever feeling you've outgrown your wheel. I don't think there's anything it can't do .Enjoy learning this amazing craft . If I could change one thing I did when learning. it would be to not choose merino ! Try something like Romney etc. Merino laughs at you while you try to tame it as a new spinner 😅- Imo ❤ Have a great time!

I’ve been watching Jillian Eve for almost a year now because I want to spin as well. I did take a drop spindle class last fall and I bought an EEW from Dreaming Robots. I didn’t want to break the bank until I got myself a little practice. I found my drop spindle class helped with drafting because it is a bit hard to draft and spin oh boy! I feel you 1000% now throw treadling in there like chew gum, walk, and rub your belly 😂 can’t wait for your first skein!

I really recommend starting with a drop spindle 😂 it lets you learn to draft and stuff before tackling the mechanical changes of a wheel.
I live near Richmond, VA and have participated in handcrafts (sewing, knitting, crochet) for nearly 60 years. Your’s is the first knitting “podcast” I found on TH-cam - a new concept to me. I started watching during Thanksgiving weekend - I had just been diagnosed with breast cancer (stage 1, very small tumor). I watched EVERY video during the period of testing - mammogram, ultrasound, 2 MRIs, 2 biopsies, surgery and path reports. Thanks for keeping me company. I am currently following another TH-cam knitter during chemotherapy… who knows what will happen during radiation!? I am inspired to knit and crochet more than ever by TH-cam. Thank you so very much!

I just found your channel today. I am 69, I live in eastern Washington state. I learned the knit stitch in third grade, I didn’t learn to Purl until adult hood. I didn’t become an obsessive knitter until about 15 years ago when my hands just started itching to knit. Over the years I have tried almost all fiber related crafts; garment sewing, embroidery, counted cross stitch, weaving, drop spindle spinning, quilting, appliqué, overdying fabric, crochet, knitting just about everything except tatting and bobbin lace. I am blessed that Paradise Fibers is my LYS for that “some day” when I get my own spinning wheel.

I made thar blanket for a friend who was recovering from a serious illness. I wanted her to have something cozy and comforting. I am sure that anyone who has to be up feeding their little one in the middle of the night would appreciate the warm squishiness of that blanket, not to mention how pretty it is. Love that color, btw! I might have to make another one in that color!

I learnt to knit when I was about 6, I wanted to make clothing for my Sindy and Barbie dolls and also baby clothes for my baby dolls!! I learnt to crochet when I was in my teens but could only make Granny Squares and blankets, so in 2022, when we were locked down I decided to get better at crochet and I even learnt Tunisian Crochet (thank you You Tube)

Nice wheel. I am a senior and I always wanted to spin. Took a class at our local guild and I can make yarn but on a Turkish drop spindle. I took my class right before Covid and had to learn on my own. Glad to say I can make pretty decent fingering yarn. I have too much stashed yarn to make too much. That’s far enough down the rabbit hole for me. Great place to start to learn to draw you yarn and get consistency. They insisted you drop spin first before you are allowed to use a wheel. Worked for me. Living in Ottawa, a retired well established senior, still teaching people to knit and quilt and knitting as fast as I can, Thanks for a lovely time together. Good Morning! I have been faithfully watching your videos for the last few months but neglected to introduce myself. I am a knitter and crocheter from the Greater Philadelphia area. I always appreciate your warmth and yarn wisdom and insight.
I realized that I never introduced myself when I joined 3 weeks ago. My name is Janet, a 21-year-old 1st-gen (Korean American) gal here. My dad is a minister, which is why I've moved around so much and giving me so much exposure to different ppl and environments, prepping for my adult life.
I've been knitting since I was 8/9. 2022 was the year I began knitting garments, my first pair of socks, and a sweater for myself (still in progress). In the past, I've made several scarves, a simple coloworked baby hat, & a gigantic blanket made with Bernat Blanket yarn for a member of my church who had cancer. I've also started a charity project (with the help of a church member) in 2010 called "Knit a Square," where you knit/crochet an 8inx8in square with long ends. This was so the ppl in charge could easily weave the squares tog for afghans for the children of South Africa. Did it again in 2018, but it wasn't as huge as the first one. I'm still glad I did them, though (at 2 different churches).
I also crochet, began around the same time. I made a few blankets, scarves, granny squares, & lots of plush (froggies, bees, etc)! I also did a fundraiser in the fall of 2019 to do a charity event with Feeding America & my church's youth group. This was achieved by selling crochet dish scrubbies, made from an eyelash yarn mad specifically for doing the dishes. It was a huge hit and probably the biggest thing I've achieved and had so much support from all ppl around me.
Besically, I've done great things with these amazing fiber crafts as a kid, making myself proud that I can use it for magical and helpful things. I've gotten lots of yarn second-hand through church ppl and purchasing my own occasionally. It's amazing what you can do with something you love so passionately.
The bind off you talked about for your Franken-sweater is truly so so good! Any time I am binding off 1x1 ribbing, I'll do this cause the finish is so worth it.
I have never heard it references as a "three needle bind off" though. I have always thought of that as having literally 3 needles, and usually it's to seam two pieces of knit fabric together with their live stitches. This bind of is "sewn tubular" or "sewn Italian" bind off, if you're searching the Tube for tutorials!!! :)
Yes this is the tubular bind off and three needle bind off is something else, done to combine two pieces together using 3 actual knitting needles. :)
OMG, you describing your first time trying to spin is so right on! It made me laugh out loud! The good news is if you work at it just a few minutes a day you will get the hang of spinning the fiber quickly. I started spinning last Summer so I'm a newbie too & it is just so much fun!

I just returned from my weekly spin-in with my friend, and wished you could have been with us.
It was decades ago when I taught individual women to spin that I realized I wanted to get my education degree.
Your candid tale brought back the memories of those first time spinners’ own apprehensions and their eventual ‘aha’ moments as they created their first 12” of yarn.
Yes, I got the degree, and became a reading specialist and linguistics professor, but it’s in my retirement that I most treasure my frequent spin-ins: creating yarns, challenging myself with a different blend (merino with mint fiber, for example) that makes each day an opportunity to keep learning.
It’s ok to have a little hubris. Joyous spinning!

I bought an e-spinner (electric eel wheel 6) as like a pre-divorce gift to myself and taught myself by just whacking at stuff until it worked. Impossible to know if expert advice would have helped. Truly impossible. But my best learning has been doing the paradise fibers fiber of the month club box and watching Jillian's streams and unboxing. I often would never have bought many of the fibers myself, so it's been a fun sort of fiber study course. I've been spinning the boxes roughly the same way because that lets me combo things for other projects. My tips: don't try to spin for a project early on. Just make pretty yarn and TAKE NOTES on how you spun it. Getting literally any yarn made itself is the project. I teach programming and it's basically the same: you're building foundational knowledge, so the key isn't the hours put in but the number of sleep cycles between. Get mad, take breaks, don't let the fibers break you.

I’m watching this while I Kitchener up the toes of a pair of socks on my lunch break.
If you’re interested in making a sew bing off go faster you can put the needle trough the first stitch knit wise, immediately go onto the second stitch along purlwise and then pull all the yarn tail through. It halved the number of times you have to pull all that yarn trough the stitches.
Another option is too break off the mohair a round or two before the bind off and not deal with the sticky yarn at all. The edge ends up a slightly different texture, but you’d only notice if you’re looking very closely.
I totally stand behind your thoughts on the “baby blanket”, my FAVORITE blankets I received when my babies were smaller were the ones that I could throw over both of us during a contact nap or lay on my lap while nursing. Not every blanket needs to be a swaddle!
Had so many giggles Tayler, you will click with spinning I know it. I’ve been doing it for 50 yrs and it’s the best. Always had Ashford ones but only got a double treadle 10 yrs ago. A game changer for me as you can slow the wheel right down to fix something. Also love Jillian Eve videos, have fun 💗
I was exactly the same! Watching all those videos before my wheel arrived and thinking: "That looks just fine. I'm gonna make it!" Dreaming of the unperfect but recognizable yarn I would produce right away. Than struggling to turn the wheel with my feet and drafting the fibre all at once. My "yarn" just broke and broke and broke again 😄 It was so frustrating! For me it helped to go very slow and it soon got better. Happy spinning Tayler. Bravo on the Lendrum! A great first wheel. A great wheel all together. It was the second wheel I got and it is so well designed and so versatile. I also enjoy Jillianeve and Tashi. Tashi has not been spinning very long but is so far ahead of me, a spinner since 2000, that I am learning a lot from her and she is pulling me out of my spinning rug. Jillianeve is also getting me inspired. You will do well if you stick with these two fantastic spinners. And fiber processors. That's another adventure awaiting you.....

I subscribed a few weeks ago. I am a knitter and crochet-er(?) from way back as a young girl. I am 71 now. I am from Oregon but now live in Washington State on the coast. I spent many years spinning also, until I had to go to work in 1991. Haven't spun since because my wheel fell off a table and broke some pieces. (Don't ever put a spinning wheel on the table!) I need to get it repaired now that I am retired. I am excited that you are discovering spinning also! (as per JillianEve below)

Love your podcast! A quick tip for the tubular bind off, you don't need to pull the tail through with every stitch. For the stitch that stays on the needle put it through the correct way for that stitch, pull it through enough to move your needle, then put it through the stich that is coming off the needle(which ever direction for that stitch) and then pull the tail through all of the way. You end up pulling the tail all of the way through half the time and it's much faster. Hope that makes sense and helps!
Love to see this new chapter for you. I took a spinning class just prior to covid and my instructor had us start just treadling, no yarn, no fibre, nothing. Practice stopping and starting the wheel with your treadling. I started watching Evie on her channel - she really is a treasure - so interesting and informative and full of energy. I bought a DT Lendrum as my first wheel - I like that they are portable too, if you have a guild near you, I would encourage you to join. My second wheel (second-hand purchase that I could not pass up) was an old Ashford Traditional. I use both and enjoy them both for different reasons. It is a lot of fun. I started weaving this year and was a knitter for 20 years prior and I have to say, if I could pick only one thing, I think it would be spinning - so relaxing and satisfying. I look forward to seeing more of your videos.
Welcome to the rabbit hole that is spinning!!! I started with a drop spindle which is really nice for learning how to draft, then i got multiple supported spindle and a wheel. It truly is a beautiful craft and knitting with your handspun is the most amazing feeling!!!

I feel like it did help me get a better understanding of fiber since it's much slower than the wheel. But I also know tons of people who started with the wheel and never got into spindle spinning 🤷🏻♀️
I can very much relate to the thrill of learning a new fiber craft. A year ago I dove deep into folk embroidery and cross stitch. Then last May I started teaching myself to sew. Now last month I started knitting as well. I’m currently working on my first sweater and first pair of socks. It is a trick balancing all of these but so very fun.

I grew out of my Ashford Kiwi pretty quickly. I hear that Lendrum wheels are amazing. I love that you purchased this from The Woolery. I live about 1.5 hrs away from there. It’s where I purchased my Kromski Symphony. I learned to spin from Evie from Jillianeve. She’s the best!
Welcome to the land of spinning! Yes it has a steep learning curve, but I found it to be kind of like when I learned to knit--I was pretty awful at first, but once my muscle memory kicked it things "clicked.". I don't want to say I never make spinning or knitting mistakes these days, just that the process is smooth enough that I can focus on color and design rather than just "making yarn." You'll get there!!
Congratulations on your wheel! When I first started spinning 7 or 8 yrs ago, I knew absolutely nothing. I had gone to a demonstration of spinning and weaving and knitting and fell in love with one of the wheels and wanted one. It was a Schacht Ladybug and just had to have one. I learned by watching videos on Craftsy. They were by Amy King, Jacey Boggs Faulkner (from Ply magazine) and Jillian Moreno. ❤ They were very helpful! ❤

Well done, Jon Snow! The first step is to know what you do not know. love your videos, and just give it a little time, and remember to take deep breaths and take your time with the wheel. It will come. Your first yarn will be art yarn, and precious, so please do yourself the favor of keeping it. As you spin each new bobbin you will be able to see progress as compared to the previous bobbin. Just do a little bit a day, maybe ten minutes or so. Congrats to a new spinner!

Good luck with your spinning journey. I did a whole day course where I basically spun all day with someone to guide me and the others on the course. I then decided to get an Ashford kiwi 3, fixed it all together and like you you got all excited about spinning at home. It was a disaster😂, I just couldn’t do it despite having got on all right with supervision. I persevered, had no choice as I’d spent so much on the wheel I had to just keep practicing. Now two years later I can spin. I’ve still got lots I can learn but love it and have knitted shawls, mitts etc with my hand spun. 😊

Love learning new crafting. I took up weaving almost a year ago and love it! I started with a rigid heddle table room that I rented from my LYS. After my first project I purchased a used 4 shaft floor loom and it's constantly busy. I'm reading about fleeces and fiber content but don't think I'm interested in spinning but many in my crafting circle think it will be inevitable. Good luck and enjoy!
Congrats on starting the spinning journey! One thing I didn't realize when I started was that it's really important for the fiber to draft easily. It helps to pre-draft the fiber, especially if it's dyed.

Love that you’ve starting spinning. I’m far from an expert and love that you recommended the vlog on spinning. I’ll be looking it up. I found a lot of Rachel Smith's first videos from about 7 years ago really good. I just started with her first one and watched them in order. Also, Craftsy has some spinning lessons. Isn’t it fun to learn something new!
Hi, Im Nikki and I live in Oxford - England not Mississippi - and I really enjoy watching the podcast. I love that you have decided to start spinning, I am usually spinning when I watch the podcast so very happy to welcome you into the insane world of turning fluff into yarn! I also learned to spin from @JillianEve but I was not as brave as you and started with a drop spindle as the wheels are so expensive and I really didn't want to commit to something before being 110% sure. Let me tell you that drop spindle got dropped SO MANY TIMES! I now have an Ashford eSpinner because our house does not have space for spinning wheel - or so I have been told...! I am excited to come with you on this spinning journey. 6 months from now you will have gorgeous yarn and will love knitting with it!!
Congrats on the spinning wheel - that's so exciting! Will love watching your journey I'm sure. I also love the rhythm of the tubular/Italian/sewn bind off. I always save it until I'm home alone and can just zen with it. Try cutting the furry strand before you start the bind off and just do it with the main yarn. With mohair it's like trying to bind off with velcro so is much easier without it. Thanks for the episode!
Hahaha! OMG T I am so happy for you, but laughing, because I behaved EXACTLY the way you did when my wheel arrived. This is going to be fun! Can’t wait to see where the adventure takes you and us. Enjoy. The sound of my wheel puts everyone in the room to sleep with its white noise. Pretty funny.
Did the same thing with my first wheel. Watched tutorials, assumed I had it down and promptly wasted a bunch of fiber. I kept the “yarn” to keep me humble.
If there is a group of spinners in your area, see if you can find out when/where they meet. That's how I started out and meet with them one evening a week. They're so helpful and generous with showing how to. I started when a friend asked if I wanted to come to her place to spin with a few ladies. I thought she was talking about spinning on stationary bikes...asked her where she was getting the bikes from. Long story short, I love my Lendrum double treadle.
You have come over to the dark side. Spinning is amazing. You will love it. When I started I had a friend who did the pedals while I drafted. That was very helpful for me. Good luck and have fun.
I just finished a pair of socks using Paton Kroy yarn. I love them! So warm. I’m in Upper Michigan. Warm is good.
Another tip for learning to spin on a wheel is to use some unspun lopi yarn, basically pencil roving that you don’t have to draft. Once you feel comfortable treadling with the regular yarn, try some unspun so you can see the twist and get a feel for how much twist you need before loading onto the bobbin.
I have had my wheel for 6 months, trying to teach myself. Please please keep sharing how you learn and what you learn. It does feel overwhelming but I am determined. Love your videos ❤
I also have a Lendrum double treadle that I recently acquired at the end of 2022. I got it after a little practice with a drop spindle, which is the only reason I think drafting for a wheel really started making sense.
I love the wheel so much more than a drop spindle. I still feel like a new beginner like you, and haven't made anything I feel like I can knit with yet.
I've often said in my videos that I feel like I'm on a little boat out at sea, figuring it out, and sometimes I will see another spinner/boat in the distance and be like how do I or what is... and then I'm back in the ocean on my boat, figuring it out.
I also loved the story of your husband being like, "Maybe you should try it with yarn.." I can 100% relate and envision that moment!
I'm excited for you to be on a spinning journey, and everyone tells me that " you must save your first skein of handspun, because you will never be able to repeat it"

Congratulations!! I started my spinning journey last August on a spindle only planning to spin enough fiber to knit a hat but I got the spinning big and bought a DT Lendrum, too. My wheel spinning has a way to go vs. drop spindle, but I LOVE it. I watched tons of videos before spinning. Now I’m rewatching them and will take an in-person class, too. Have fun!!!

This is my go to bind off for ribbing, usually only takes about 30-45 mins to do the hem of a sweater once I get focused and into the rhythm of it. Pro tip. For the sewn tubular bind off pull the yarn farther through your needle so you are not pulling a mile of yarn through every stitch. Also you can use only the main yarn and not the suri… it won’t be visible and will be ever so much easier to pull the yarn through as you work.
I think the BO you’re using for the Franken Sweater is the Tubular Bind Off, and not the 3 Needles BO. The 3 needles BO, as the name suggests, uses 3 knitting needles to graft 2 pieces of live stitches together by knitting together 1 st from each needle, and slipping the previous st over, like a standard BO. The tubular BO is a sewn BO that needs a tapestry needles to graft sts that belong to the same piece of fabric. One way you can do it is by rearranging the sts on 2 needles, and using the kitchener stitch, or as you explain your video, you can do it on one needle without having to rearrange the sts, but have to do a little dance with the tapestry needle

That is not a 3 needle bind off. I know knitting nomenclature isn’t universal, but a three needle bind off is a join or seam. That’s a sewn bind off. Lovely, but a different thing all together.

Hello, I'm from Germany and 21 years old. My mom thought me knitting and crochet when I was about 8 or 9. I only recently seriously picked up knitting in December. (I crochet for the last few years, but last year I did a lot more projects and learned a lot).

So the batt you showed us was very lovely. My own personal opinion is that batts are difficult for beginners, especially depending on fiber content.
The Woolery sells a blend called Heinz 57. It’s an undyed fiber and what they give you to try in the store (I’ve spent several hours there testing wheels.) It’s super easy to spin with and comes at about $15 a pound. One pound of fiber is usually what it takes to really get going with spinning. Just buy a bag and practice.
Spinning for the first time is truly a great humbling 🤣🤣🤣 but once it clicks, it CLICKS and is so fun!!

LisaR : Great choice for your wheel . Ive been spinning on and off ( babies:) for a quite a while ..Your wheel is an easy one to learn on bc it's responsive , easy to treadle - and simple to set up . Yet - You'll be able to easily spin for many years without ever feeling you've outgrown your wheel. I don't think there's anything it can't do .Enjoy learning this amazing craft . If I could change one thing I did when learning. it would be to not choose merino ! Try something like Romney etc. Merino laughs at you while you try to tame it as a new spinner 😅- Imo ❤ Have a great time!
Omg I had the SAME experience as you with spinning. It was so much harder than I thought it would be and it’s humbling. I only started in May of last year and already I’m forgetting how hard it was at the beginning. You’ll learn super fast, it’s a wild ride and I’m so excited for you!!
