I first watched American Graffiti sometime after it came out (on TV) and I was about half the age of the characters...loved (still love) the John Milner deuce coupe. At that time, I thought it must have been a cool and exciting time. I was mostly interested in the cars and girls. I just watched it again (for the umpteenth time) and this time I am more than twice the age of the characters...I saw a different movie, to put it simply, the Richard Dreyfuss character (Curt Henderson) was the entire movie...or perhaps he represented how I perceived life, at some point you have to grow up and move on. That point in life where you realize the fork in the road you must take and are no longer looking back, but looking ahead.

I rewatched "High Fidelity" the other night, and was struck by the parallels between it and "Alfie," both in central character and in the talking-to-the camera trope.

Where has Richard Linklater's Slacker been all my life? I watched it because it was talked about in Seen it? and I was not disappointed. Held so much nostalgia for the Austin University area. Would definitely watch again.

One of the only episodes of this show that I've never gotten around to was the first Christmas special, so it absolutely floored me to hear Matt say he has never seen Miracle on 34th Street.
I'm not sure how well it necessarily lends itself to the show format, but Matt, if you don't wind up watching it for the show, just watch it period. This movie is a holiday classic, in my opinion, and accomplishes something so few films do - successful incorporation of a motto (think Love Story with "Love means never having to say you're sorry"). On a side note, this might be the only Christmas (not holiday - Christmas) movie I've seen that talks about having faith in a way that doesn't make me uncomfortable as a Jewish audience.

I wouldn't mind reading a history of Fourth Wall breaking in media. Shakespeare, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, Fiddler On The Roof, Alfie, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, etc. It happens a lot in video games, too, but that's mostly to explain the controls to the audience.

Have you thought of watching some examples of cinema from the Soviet Union. We have all seen the Eisenstein and Tarkovsky collections but a lot of really interesting films came out of the USSR that are little known in the English speaking world. Why not try depressing WW2 film "Come and See", depressing family drama "Little Vera", or depressing Afghan war movie "Afghan Breakdown". "Afghan Breakdown" would definitely be worth re examining in light of recent experiences that we in the USA and UK have respectively had with our own Afghan wars. All the best. xx

If you went to Jewish sleep away camp in the late 70s-early 80s, you would have totally gotten Wet Hot American Summer. It is a very, very, very specific movie and those who don't get it did not A.) go to Jewish sleep away camp in the late 70s-early 80s and B.) See A. Also if you don't like Meatballs you won't get that movie either. WHAS and Meatballs just happen to be great films precisely for their specificity. But, like I said, if you didn't go to any camp in the late 70s-early 80s you will not get or like either of those films I think.
