No. That goes for The Big Gundown (110 min version). But Silence is an interesting film no doubt, maybe a bit over-simplistic with the political message (and the subversions sometimes reach just-because-we-can territory). Still, basic viewing for every SW fan.
I'd love to see Robert De Niro dressed up as a tree in Matt's movie idea 'The A-list'. Just to see his face sticking out of a cut-out hole in the tree costume in the background would be amazing.
It's funny you mention the happy ending you expect with the Sheriff riding in because he didn't really die since it was off-camera because thats exactly what happened. Corbucci was forced to write a happy ending for US release and the sheriff didn't die and Silence had an iron glove on that protected his hand
+BlameSociety Jup. As much as a happy ending usually pleases the soul, here it changes the whole message of the movie and looks as forced and unfitting as Corbucci must have felt filming it.
The Happy Ending was only for the Asian Market, the film was never released in the US . Also the Happy Ending was concocted because so many markets had rejected the film. Corbucci and the cast really disliked changing things up, when it came time to film the ending scene the whole cast and crew got drunk right before the actual scenes were shot . The ending was lost for decades and finally a scratchy print with no audio surfaced .
Assuming the name was Antti, it's uh. Hard to explain. I'm used to explaining this face to face, with sounds. This is the first time someone has asked me to do this on the internet. I'll give it a shot; the biggest thing to remember is that in Finnish, you only emphasise the first syllable. So, instead of Ant-TI, it's more like ANT-ti. But since there's a double consonant, you don't make two separate T-sounds, but more like hold your tounge for a wee moment and then give out a strong -ti, sounding sharper than just with one t. I've noticed that the difference between "anti" and "Antti" in Finnish can be hard to differenciate for non-language-speakers, though, which is kind of a given. And at this point I give up because languages are hard to explain. To be fair though, I don't think the person who got their name called out gives a shit, and I'd personally just be screaming my pants off if I had my name pronounced in any given way on this show. I just enjoy it when I hear Finnish names being pronounced wrong, but man, I've always dealt with this situation IRL (used to live in the UK, so it was also a daily occurence). And honestly, give me for example a list of Ugandan names and I'm fucking lost on how to say them. Oh gawsh this makin' me blush
So I've been subbed for a bit. I came here due to the Snake oil animated videos via Tithinian, and I didn't really expect anything else from this channel. Boy was I wrong. I just spent yesterday binge watching the entirety of WttB Season 4, and I'm hooked. this channel rocks!
1:34 cat sighted, but I'm not sure what is around 1:36 at the bottom. One black part seems to be socks but the other... mistery... Can't be the other sock.
i love spaghetti western and this is one of my favourites! The snowy landscape gives this film an incredible atmosphere which perfectly fits the brilliant score by Ennio Morricone. the english dubbing unfortunately takes away much of this movies quality
This was a great episode and it looked like a great movie. Great talk about the movie. I like A-List, it's totally doable as a short. I'm waiting to see Silence the private eye. Would be good. Your seenits went into more depth for more movies than usual. That's good. More of that! I love all the stuff you said about The Fly and Cronenberg. All true. (But you didn't get the Toronto into it.) No more Italians and no more spaghetti westerns? That's too bad because Nobody goes well with Silence. (I mean My Name Is Nobody (been asking for it for a while)). I could add them to my alternative hero team up- I had Fearless and Unbreakable, add Nobody and Silence.
Craig Johnson The Hateful Eight is a TOTALLY different premise. He's not into complete remakes anyway. He just steals elements here and there and makes them his own. With that said, he's my favorite director and I'm seeing Hateful Eight opening night.
+Craig Johnson The look does seem pretty similar. It's not often that you see snow in a western. You didn't sound like you were getting down on him at all. Reading back my previous reply I sounded kind of rude and I'm sorry for that. We all know Tarantino takes things from other movies all the time. For all I know he may directly quote The Great Silence.
It might just be that I've never seen any winter westerns but it seems to me that Tarantino took alot of inspiration from this to do The Hateful Eight. They have some plot elements in common for sure but visually it's very reminiscent.
Look at him, he's heading for that small hill! That's Snow Hill! Shot that potato right between the eyes! There was a lot of Fargo in this movie also; even a sign saying Wells Fargo.
Actually, from what I've heard, Jean-Louis' lack of dialogue was because he couldn't speak English, not because he didn't want any dialogue. Corbucci originally came up with the idea for a mute gunfighter when Marcello Mastroianni told him that he wanted to be in a Western, but would have been held back by his inability to speak English, and Corbucci decided to use this idea on Silence's character.
A-List would be a terrible movie but it would make SO much money. And the documentary of behind the scenes footage that would inevitably happen would be AMAZING - especially if it were made now. I mean, the President is already a reality TV goon, so we're almost there. I really want to see this movie now.
Another fun episode! If you haven't already seen it, uh, I mean read it, I think you both might like a book I'm reading called Pictures at a Revolution: Five Movies and the Birth of the New Hollywood. It looks at the five very different films up for Best Picture Oscar of 1967 (including Dr. Dolittle and The Graduate), and details all the twists and machinations involved in getting them made. The author uses the stories to illustrate the huge transition in Hollywood that unfolds as those movies are made, from the death of the Production Code to the death of the big splashy movie musical (that era's equivalent to the studio-saving summer blockbuster).
The main character is a mute and dies at the end? Wow Carbucci had some balls to direct this. Its like telling the Americans, look not every movie ends with the Hero winning and a Disneyland ending.
Well yeah, his previous Western Django didn't have a very happy ending either. Django loses the girl, the money and his hands are wrecked. He basically lost everything in the end.
Seen It: As I'm watching the Welcome To The Basement episodes from the start, I've only recently watched your Decline Of Western Civilization episode. Regarding music docs, have you seen Until The Light Takes Us? Pretty disturbing.
Glaring omissions ought to include pre-2000's Marvel superhero movies: Please watch Captain America (1979), Captain America II: Death Too Soon (1979), Captain America (1990), The Punisher (1989), Blade (1998), Howard the Duck (1986). Have you seen all of those?
How can one man have so much vibrato as Glenn Yarborough has on The Greatest Adventure....I do like the original Misty Mountains though...and Where there's a Whip from RoTK.
For the record, Mackinac IS pronounced as "Mack-in-Awe" (It's a French/Native American thing. The actual fort nearby is Fort Michilimackinac). We know, it's weird.
+BlameSociety I have a Seen It for you: What We Do is Secret, as you are a fan of those musical Biopics. Also, I am curious on your thoughts on how Darby Crash was portrayed and how Shane West went on to front the band for a few more years.
What period are the events of this film supposed to have happened at? Loads of the characters are using Mauser C96 pistol and it entered service in 1899.....pause.......On further searching I found out that American frontier epoch lasted through 1607-1912 so this use of Mauser C96 is not anachronistic in this film.
+gravityvertigo13579 Eh..they always say something is "busted" even when it has actually happened. Straight answer Can you shoot a gun out of someones hand..yes. But the steadiness and aiming required does not lend itself to a gun fight.
The Fly was great. Scanners was a goofy, fun ride, but not nearly as good as The Fly. Videodrome was just...strange. Speaking of strange sci-fi movies, have you guys seen the 1982 film Xtro? This kid's dad was abducted by aliens, then comes back to supposedly be with his family...but it turns out he's not entirely human anymore and he gives his kid weirdass powers and all sorts of fucked up shit goes down. It's got some really good practical effects and plenty of "wtf" moments.
it's absolutely fascinating to pair any one of these style spaghetti westerns with Django Unchained. really shows how Tarantino is a master of his craft by not only flipping the role of the bounty hunter into the hero, but also creating his own context for the film as an addendum to almost every subgenre in the "Western" canon. while audiences might get caught up on the sure cartoonish and brash action/dialogue...he's just using it as a glossy over-coat to subvert what is really going in terms of being so scholarly with the homage....next to Seth McFarlane the kids a genius....and Seth is wicked smart.
No he's not. He just copied what the Italians did years before. Just like how he copied hong Kong films, Jack hill, just about every legendary exploitation film ever like Thriller a cruel picture, Lady Snowblood, Switchblade sisters, etc.
Bad movie idea: If I were a billionaire I'd buy the rights to "The Terminator", write the script from memory, then cast myself in the title role. I'd probably also have to pay the theaters to show it. Why doesn't Zuckerberg do this? What's wrong with these kids today.
+malletpropstudios Really that would make more sense in terminator. The terminators were supposed to blend in yet a hulking, static walking, monotone talking guy kind of stands out. Now the Terminator should be some balding middle age guy...no one would look twice
Rankin/Bass's Hobbit stands head and shoulders above Jackson's. It fulfills Tolkein's intention as a children's story wherein the protagonists are often simple-minded or at least dimensionally challenged, and what lies beyond the Shire is still a wonder for Bilbo (even with its dangers) and not yet the dark world Frodo will eventually enter. Plus... the music! And I am no fan of musicals but the music in Rankin/Bass's version, which is actually found in the friggin' story, fleshes out the world in a way that a bunch of special effects cannot. Want to know how to experience a culture? Listen to their music. Fifteen Birds in Five Fir Trees. Just sayin'.
Very underrated movie. Maybe the best non-Leone spaghetti western.
No. That goes for The Big Gundown (110 min version). But Silence is an interesting film no doubt, maybe a bit over-simplistic with the political message (and the subversions sometimes reach just-because-we-can territory). Still, basic viewing for every SW fan.
Wow. Might disagree here. As much as I love LVC.....I think I put my money on Companeros, another Corbucci Western
I'd love to see Robert De Niro dressed up as a tree in Matt's movie idea 'The A-list'. Just to see his face sticking out of a cut-out hole in the tree costume in the background would be amazing.
+CounterNerd why are you literally in all of the comment sections of videos that i watch
Dr.PanCakes
I'm magic. You're like the 6th or 7th person to say that over the last 6 months. And I've had people say that for years.

Yes it is.

Thanks.

+Ash Williams Yeah, I watched that on youtube. I like the sad ending better.
+BlameSociety Jup. As much as a happy ending usually pleases the soul, here it changes the whole message of the movie and looks as forced and unfitting as Corbucci must have felt filming it.
+Hogibaer They are literally laughing at the audience at the end of the happy ending. It was a big F YOU to the people that forced em to make it.

Thats not a terrible idea, it's wonderful. I'd watch it.
Mmmmh, nothing ends the day better than hearing a sweet, sweet mispronunciation of a Finnish name! Much love from Finland.
+torskavaig How is it pronounced?
Assuming the name was Antti, it's uh. Hard to explain. I'm used to explaining this face to face, with sounds. This is the first time someone has asked me to do this on the internet. Hilarious! My friend and I had the exact same idea as your "A-list" about 15 years ago. We still bring it up and laugh about it every now and then.
Just stumbled across you guys and I'm only 1 minute and 14 seconds in and can tell already you guys deserve a sub and a like.
Is that Foreign Affairs in the back? Classic.
+Wubbles yes
Always enjoy these videos, many thanks fellas.
I'm shocked no one said "one potato a man shoots"
Aw hell yeah! Corbucci always needs more love!
So now we know where the Hateful Eight came from
So I've been subbed for a bit. I came here due to the Snake oil animated videos via Tithinian, and I didn't really expect anything else from this channel. Boy was I wrong. I just spent yesterday binge watching the entirety of WttB Season 4, and I'm hooked. this channel rocks!
Foreign Affairs is in the background this episode, excellent album by am excellent musician!!
the greatest movie ever made.
seriously, i could easily watch 30 minutes of just 'seen it'.
I gotta watch this!!!
"I'd be surprised if it fits you!" LOL New lauds and honors to Craig for knowing how to pronounce Mackinac!
Ernesto quote at end: perfect!
Great stuff.
You guys should watch They Live 1988 and The Network 1976. Both great movies i recently I watched for the first time.
Brundlefly eating is one of the highlights of modern cinema.
the madeline (or madeleine, whatever it spelled) should be the new logo of the show ^^ it s adorable !

Have you guys seen the alternate ending to The Great Silence? It's not a superior ending, but it's a nice palate cleanser after all the nihilism. Lol
23:11 Next movie'll be Bullets or Ballots, see? Can't wait.
This was a great episode and it looked like a great movie. Great talk about the movie.

I really enjoy spaghetti westerns. This was one I'm not familiar with, so its now on my watch list.
I honestly thought Matt's singing was part of the title screen at first.
Quality stuff there.
to me The Great Silence is the best none leone pasta westerns
The talking through my hat part cracked me up. :)
Damn. I want to watch this movie, and then see it remade. I call dibs baby.
+DeathBlackWish From what little I've seen of the Hateful Eight, I think Tarentino might have beat you to the punch.

KINSKI FOR HALL OF FAME!!
+Ben Granoff oh forget it, he's already in the Hall of fame. Your Fitzcaraldo ep was my first taste of both it, you and HE. keep it up, heroes!

i feel like bernie sanders could direct a decent movie
+Chairman Wow Godard already made that movie in 2010, it's called 'Socialisme'.
Have you guys ever seen the 1980's hip hop classic Beat Street?
'expert gunslingers' is what Craig was looking for

How can one man have so much vibrato as Glenn Yarborough has on The Greatest Adventure....I do like the original Misty Mountains though...and Where there's a Whip from RoTK.
Hey guys! If you haven't already, how about you take a look at "Paper Moon." This movie is as funny as it is heart warming.
The "A-List" movie Matt wanted was pretty much already made and atrocious called "Movie 43." Filled with stars and multiple celebrity directors.
You guys should watch some Australian movies like The Castle (1997) or Stone (1974). There's some great and weird Aussie movies out there.

Praise The Sun!!
I wonder if this movie had any influence of Tarantino's upcoming western Hateful Eight?
Hhmmn...I wonder.
wait a minute, couldn't silence just write about the people who killed his parents when he was a kid?
pauline is easy on the eyes
Man.... Vonetta McGee was beautiful.
Have yall seen Empire Records? It's a silly 90's movie and if you haven't seen it, you should.

+Mesh Frequency It's 1899.
I wonder what it was like to party, like it's 1899?
Mesh Frequency Apparently it doesn't end so well.
+Mesh Frequency thank you for pointing this out, I thought I was seeing things.
The Mythbusters tested that gun-shot-out-of-your-hand thing, and considered it Busted. So your instinct is probably right!
+gravityvertigo13579 Eh..they always say something is "busted" even when it has actually happened. Straight answer Can you shoot a gun out of someones hand..yes. But the steadiness and aiming required does not lend itself to a gun fight.
i dont think that semi automatic pistols existed back then lol and of course its a mauser lol
They did exist.
Devon Asher The movie takes place 1899 and Mauser started being made in 1896.
one potato a man eats, two men a potato shoots
This is the storyline to The Hateful Eight! (Sort of.) I wuz robbed, Quentin!
(Not really. ;-))
Craig looked like Loco
Did outlaws died?
"Cut Throats Nine" find it...
I thought Loco kicking Silence was really funny. I had to watch that a couple of times.
Craig is definitely closeted
Watch something by John Waters!
+StickWarrior I'd be surprised if there's any Waters movie they haven't already seen.
I want to see A-List made right now. The notion of Trump directing all those Hollywood actors is hilarious to me
You guys should watch the Coffin Joe movies.
...Kinski...
gotta watch this one. I really enjoyed the original django but my dad didn't like it at all.
what about a film where the main cast is a bunch of unknowns but all the extras are a-listers?
9:41 You're terrible at kissing!
Oh, wait...
Well gosh. Someone decided to recommend Two Lane Blacktop to them too. Oh well.
You guys probably should watch some russian movie for example Tarkovsky or something other.
Did you ever see Batman: Mask of the Phantasm?
I think a lot of action films could be improved by the hero being a mute.
The Fly was great. Scanners was a goofy, fun ride, but not nearly as good as The Fly. Videodrome was just...strange.

The plural of Gun Man is Gun Men... which incidentally sounds like the common pronunciation of Gun Man... "Gun M'n".
I'm 100 percent sure that Neil Drunkmann saw this film and used it for inspiration for The Last of Us Part 2. That's not a good thing.
Rankin/Bass's Hobbit stands head and shoulders above Jackson's. John Hurt definitely won't do a good job now.
Dylan Brogan's least favorite movie.
Hateful 8 was a sham, haha
crazy that this episode of WTTB came out less than a month before Hateful 8 hit theaters haha
Also the Rankin/Bass version of The Hobbit is intended for children so the critique really isn't valid as you're both grown ass men.
