    This one and Goldfinger pretty much cover all the tropes most parodies make fun of. Those two movies are easily the most iconic of the franchise.

    In regards to Craig's comments about the Columbia Record Club phone conversation in the Coen Bros. film "A Serious Man": not only do "Cosmo's Factory" & "Abraxas" suggest metaphysical implications in their titles, but in a film that was meticulously researched for it's 1967 setting, these two albums from 1970 are strikingly anachronistic.

    I was going to say that Michael Caine couldn't be the next Bond because he was already playing a spy in another spy franchise also produced by Harry Saltzman: the Harry Palmer series (the first one being "The Ipcress File") but I just checked and the last Harry Palmer movie made, "Billion Dollar Brain", had come out the exact same year as this movie so the role may have been offered to him.
    And, yes, I know that there were 2 more Harry Palmer movies made for television in the 90s with Michael Caine and Sean Connery's son but that was much later.

      It truly is a science-fiction film like no other. If Connery's appearance (or for that matter, anyone else's) can seem laughable, the ideas are involving and the setting intriguing; instead of blinking hardware, explosions and the *zap* of lasers, we have the glitter of crystals, the ring of chimes and the wordless human voice. It is my favorite Boorman film - but even if it weren't, it deserves at least one look. (Like just about any film, really, or other complicated joint effort.) 😎

    *Press pause* (re: Bond discussion) - The problem with Michael Caine as Bond is that he already had established himself as the 'counter Bond' character of Harry Palmer (Ipcress File, et al). Being so much the characterisational inverse of Bond (Palmer was an anti-establishment anti-hero) it would have been incongruous of him then to play the character which he had 'spoofed'. ...PS, the best Bond theme ever was of course the theme from 'Life of Brian'.

    If you haven't seen it already, I highly recommend a viewing of Paul Verhoeven's film Showgirls. Hated by most and often a usual feature of "worst films of all time" lists, I think the film gets a very bad rap that it really doesn't deserve. It's started to get a bit of a critical re-evaluation from people recently, but I hope it goes through a full one as it's a great satire and take on the "poor girl to stardom" tale.

  • @zacharylewis2802
    @zacharylewis2802 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Matt is spot on regarding Connery’s performance. By 1967, Sean Connery hated playing James Bond. Hated the reliance on gadgets, the focus being on world domination, the costars who couldn’t speak English and had to be dubbed, the micromanaging producing duo of Saltzman and Broccoli, the public perception of him being Bond, the itchy toupee, the actors playing M and Moneypenny for doing an Italian ripoff movie starring Sean Connery’s own brother Neil (he did apologize to the actors for acting like a dick), and his terrible 5-film contract that only paid him a flat $100,000 per movie. So for what he thought would be his final Bond film, Sean Connery gave a dull and disinterested performance. He displays none of the charm or chemistry that easily radiates off of him in the first three movies. The only time he bothers to actually act like Bond is when he’s opposite Donald Pleasence.

    Well, what Matt describes is the ending of the novel, so spoilers xD
    The book opens up with Bond a wreck after the death of his wife Tracy in the last book. M feels sorry for him and gives him what seems to be an easy assignment in Japan, to help him get his confidence back. While there he discovers that Blofeld is in hiding in a castle and has set up a suicide garden.

  • @comandercool22

    As a die hard Bond fan, You Only Live Twice is hit and miss for me. Sean Connery seems bored through the film and compared to the films that came before and after the story and action are rather tame. Tiger Tanaka is really the most interesting character in the movie. He's like M combined with Bond which is very cool. Blofeld's reveal came too late in the film and we don't get enough time to really know much about him. You meet him then the Volcano battle happens. John Barry's music score really elevates the film but it's a lower tier'd Bond film for me. The movie was pretty much remade as The Spy Who Loved Me and it was so much better in my opinion.
