Have you guys ever seen Cold Turkey, it's a satirical comedy about a small Midwestern town all trying to give up smoking. It's directed by Norman Lear and is scored by Randy Newman (his first time doing so). I think it's alright, but the opening and closing shots are some of the best bookends to a movie I've ever seen in my young life. Newman's song "He Gives Us All His Love" was what got me interested in his stuff when I was just starting to get into music in high school and he's been my absolute favorite artist since.
I love how Craig said that Ray Milland was released in 1905, like he was some kind of experiment assembled in a lab and unleashed on an unsuspecting world.
I've been watching WTTB since day 1, and it's been awesome the whole time. I was expecting it to last a year, and now, years later, it's still going on ! Congrats, guys, and keep up the good work.
From the Christine IMDB page: To simulate the car regenerating itself, hydraulic pumps were installed on the inside of some of the film's numerous Plymouth Fury "stunt doubles", a mock-up in plastic that looked more like metal on camera than actual metal as it bent and deformed. These pumps were attached to cables, which were in turn attached to the cars' bodywork and when they compressed, they would "suck" the paneling inwards. Footage of the inward crumpling body was then reversed, giving the appearance of the car spontaneously retaking form. Sorry if I ruined the magic!
Michel Gondry for my living director. not cuz Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of my all time favorite movies, but because he's a french surrealist, and a musician. who wouldn't want to have a jam sesh on the ceiling? my dead director would be George Melies. his art was so inspired and fantastic. he would be a wonderful person to talk process with.
this made my day. this movie could have also been called "born to die, world is a fuck". never thought i'd see the day there were blame society and zaibatsu crossover fans
Matt, to answer your question about Christine, they did shoot the repairing scene in reverse. More specifically, they made a fake car out of plastic and used hydraulic vacuums to suck it inwards, and reversed the footage so it looked like the dents repaired themselves.
I saw this movie on TV late at night a long time ago and really enjoyed it. I never caught the name of it and have been wondering what it was ever since. Thanks for reminding me of this movie and finally showing me the name so I can watch it again.
Apparently, they did the Christine scene by installing hydraulic pumps inside the frame of one of their many cars (I think they got more than 20 for the film), had them dent the car in various places for the shots, and - as Matt suspected - showed this action in reverse to create the effect of repairing herself. The shots look as impressive as they do mainly because the hydraulics were hidden from view and pulling on the frame inward, leaving no trace of the mechanism when shown in reverse.
This is one of my favorite cult classics. I love how he keeps saying "there is no more civilization" but runs into it everywhere he goes. Have Y'all seen A boy and his dog? Kind of a crazy post apocalyptic film about youth and beast roaming the wasteland in search of food, ammo, and women but finding more than they bargained for.
Agreed about Billy Freidkin! ;) I spent loads of yesterday watching documentaries on youtube about the making of Cruising, The Boys In The Band and his Mick Garris interview. Great pick. I could (and did) listen to the guy talking for hours! And Les Baxter! I'm currently working on a remix album of Les Baxter's work, called The Road Les Travelled ;) You guys seen No Blade of Grass? A criminally underseen UK based apocalypse film about society breaking down. Its a classic! Some of its plot points arent a million miles away from Panic In Year Zero. Also, watch Tony Hancock's The Rebel! :D
Enjoyable episode! Also have you guys seen Elvis & Nixon? It's fairly recent (also starring Michael Shannon!) and I thought it was actually a nice, funny film.
Craig, I find it awesome that your mother was willing to take you (from school, no less) to see horror films at an early age. A lot of parents would be too scared to try that.
Hey fellas, have you seen 'Tyrannosaur' written & directed by Paddy Considine with great perfomances from Peter Mullan & Olivia Colman. What about 'Dead Man's Shoes' also written by & starring Considine. Two grim but excellent movies.
my mom took me to watch one of the jaws movies when I was about 8 or 9 , in Mexico they didn't care much about age restrictions, unless there was nudity...
You know with the cameo thing at 22:37 its probably for the best that it wasnt the cast of the good the bad and the ugly, as it would have come across as distracting and him hating on his old movies, as he actually said he hated working with eastwood as he was very much love hate with him. along with Eli wallach given the train scene in that movie. where he said that he wanted to do another take of eli putting his cuffs across the tracks to break them, and he said no as a piece of the train, the footladder had nearly taken his head off in the previous take. so I think it would have changed things too much and distracted from the film much like how Gene Roddenberry wanted the USS stargazer, a constellation class ship to be a constitution class ship, the same ship as the enterprise in the first six films, to be in the episode the battle, as it would have gone from an endearing scene and a view into his past to a slap in the face to the fans of his former films and movies Given Picard described the stargazer as under powered and flying apart at the scenes compared to the enterprise D in either that episode or relics with scotty. so thankfully in both cases it got changed to what it is now, and two scenes that would have gone from endearing to spiteful rightfully got changed into what they are now. and yes I just talked about star trek and westerns in the same vein lol live with it lol
I pray the next episode is A Boy and His Dog. It'd be an excellent companion to Panic at Year Zero, and is definitely strong sci fi (having been written by Harlan Ellison, and whatnot).
Damn, with all that punching it made me want to see a post- apocalyptic kung fu movie. Maybe a Shaolin monk trying to bring back peace and order in China after a nuclear war.
18:56 Greeting from the future! It's May of 2020 and the correct answer, Mr. Johnson is - toilet paper. Get all the toilet paper. I guess. For some reason. We're idiots.
At one point you guys come to the conclusion that Roger Corman was involved with this film. Not sure what you based that on (it's not true, btw). This film played on a double bill with BURN, WITCH, BURN in many, if not most, areas. (Might point out that the character Rick/Avalon moves into the front seat as they all begin to realize that things are becoming increasingly violent, confrontational and physical, things for which the guys feel they need to "huddle" about and team together. This is the old notion of the family, where the males have the role of "protector".)
guys plz plz review falling down with Michael douglas and Barbara Hershey and Frederick for rest et al!!!! it's so relevant to me as a human being with deep introverted opinions on human nature and what a backlash is all about. you are very entertaining! ! keep on trucking.
"This is no good, son. This cave is already occupied by Eegah! (1962)" Nice one, Matt!
Space Cop DVD spotted bottom right of frame at 2:38 OMG THE CROSSOVER

America's Caveman!
I love how Craig said that Ray Milland was released in 1905, like he was some kind of experiment assembled in a lab and unleashed on an unsuspecting world.
I had to rewind that part just to make sure I wasn't hearing things
The editing in this episode is exceptional.
This movie inpressed me with the year it was delivered to us. Very good and dark.
I love this movie
I've been watching WTTB since day 1, and it's been awesome the whole time. I was expecting it to last a year, and now, years later, it's still going on ! Congrats, guys, and keep up the good work.
I love realistic behavior in sci-fi movies. This one along with The Thing from Another World have always been two of my favorites.

How many times have they shown that Lost Weekend clip?
410 billion
And it won't be the last time
+Mr.Beast Rebel of the Hellscape Dead cops?
this made my day. this movie could have also been called "born to die, world is a fuck". never thought i'd see the day there were blame society and zaibatsu crossover fans
+SERAPHlM I am trash man! I honestly didn't expect anyone to get it,but this is a pretty sick fandom cross over!
The "hanging out with dead directors" sequence makes this a classic episode
I'm sure you've heard this before, but this show deserves many, many more views. It's probably my favorite TH-cam series.
Every once in a while I come back to this episode, just to hear Matt and Craig singing The Smiths again
21:30 Noah Taylor! from The Year My Voice Broke and Almost Famous.
Great episode; loved it! Thanks for brightening up a pretty dark day.
Thanks guys. In another day with more terrible news this is always a welcome distraction.
Just wait until 2020, 2017 guy.
@@themoviedealers 2021 Guy checking in here, 2020 Guy. It’s still not great.
@@Zap_Rowsdower 2022 guy here, I have some unfortunate news lol

Got to check this movie out, looks interesting! Great episode!
I liked your comment before I read it because of Alex Kidd.
I will never tire of that bat scene.
Another great one, keep up the great work guys!
Have you guys seen The Maltese Falcon? Only saw it recently and looooved it!

watching this episode in 2021 hits different
Another great episode guys! Looking forward to many more!

great flick. wicked story for the time period.
It's rather funny with Craig discussing his apocalypse plan. Our family keeps 1 months food and water in the house, candles and individual INCH bags.
I saw the movie and enjoyed it, liked your commentary.
Seen it: Zardoz - almost certainly the most incomprehensible and yet fascinating movie I have seen to date.
Have you guys seen Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story? I loved the songs and the way it parodies both old and new music stars
That scream gets me every time.
fun fact: Ray Milland was actually Welsh (from Neath, South Wales) and emigrated to the States in 1930 age 23.
I think he is also one of only three Welsh born Oscar winners, along with Catherine Zeta Jones and Anthony Hopkins.
"Look you boyo. Pull down the bridge is it"
great episode guys!
Have you seen Gentlemen Broncos? You either love it or hate it but something about it hits me just right.
I'm never going to NOT laugh when you show that Lost Weekend clip.
Soft Stone oh so many times they've ran that clip.
Have you guys ever watched Ken Park? I think it's a fantastic movie, very unsettling at times, but fantastic nonetheless.
is that the one where the guy strangles himself while jacking off to a tennis match?
Folgemilch21 that's the one!
Oh you, Larry Clark...
great stuff! greets from Finland :-)
I should have been tallying all the Lost Weekend bat clips through the whole series. Cause I´m kinda curious exactly how many times it has been shown.
That Bat joke NEVER gets old.
Another great episode! Good choice, Craig!

9:30 shotgun? bullet? which was it?
Man, Craig has the coolest mom ever! "I'll pick you up from school at lunchtime so we can go to the movies." So, so cool. :)
Craig, you need to whip up one of those recipes when you choose a Ray Milland movie. TELL HIM MATT!
3:43 THE CAT OF DOOM!!!
You guys should do Last Year At Marienbad and/or The Discreet Charm Of The Bourgeoisie. Whenever appropriate, of course.
Seen it? Monsters: Dark Continent. A truly great film that features war in a way I've never seen another sci-fi movie undertake.
Hey guys love the show. I recently watched Das Boot and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was wondering what your thoughts were on the film.
SCENE IT: Have you guys seen "Idiocracy"? It's my favorite movie ever and could watch it anytime! I get a real ''lol' every time I watch it.
Was that a remix of People Everyday from the Trigun OST after the cold open?
No. It was a remix of our theme song by our composer, Mike Rafferty.
it sounds like a Theramin
Wow, with that much punching might we guess what this year's non-human inductee into the hall of fame is going to be?
You guys must do the British equivalent from 1962: The Day The Earth Caught Fire... it's great!
love you guys

A classic end of world movie for me. And yeah, I have the DVD. Nice review Guys...
"probably just very thin wire" That's your answer to everything
You shoot me, that'll confuse them. I want that on my epitaph
I guess you could say the kid earned "shotgun" with his shotgun.
aaaayyyyyeeeee! 👍

Harry didn't sink into insanity, he merely changed the currency to punches...
Victor Fleming, so he could tell me everything about Clara Bow, I could talk about her for days
Have you guys seen House of Bamboo. Might make for an interesting episode. American crime Noir set in 1950's Japan
Ah, the greatest currency of them all....... Punches in bunches!
have you guys seen 'chariots of fire'? it's my guilty pleasure movie
You guys should watch birth of a nation
Aye, there's an element of morbid curiosity about that film. I'd love to watch it.
You've both seen, perhaps even on stage, the Rocky Horror Picture Show, right?
Craig, you officially have one of the coolest moms...EVER.
I wish this was a weekly show...
How is Submarine not a comedy? It's absolutely hilarious! And some parts are actually better than the book. The book's still great.
Damn, with all that punching it made me want to see a post- apocalyptic kung fu movie. Maybe a Shaolin monk trying to bring back peace and order in China after a nuclear war.
You SEENIT Once Upon A Time In The West, I don't believe you've commented yet aboot my suggestion of My Name Is Nobody. :-D
Craig, your mom sounds awesome!
I just watched Network last night and it might be the best movie I've ever seen. What do you guys think of it.
I always thought the title of this movie would make a good name for a rock band.
Since Matt has often expressed enjoyment of rap, how about watching 8 Mile? Seen it?
I'm reading Seveneves. there are some similarities to this movie about the end of the world
18:56 Greeting from the future! It's May of 2020 and the correct answer, Mr. Johnson is - toilet paper. Get all the toilet paper. I guess. For some reason. We're idiots.
Anyone else headcannoning this as taking place in the Fallout universe or is that just me?
This is similar to the fallout audiobook I listened to.... just the nuclear fallout and the cave....
have you guys seen Swiss Army Man yet? I didn't think Harry Potter would be a good actor but he is amazing in this film.
I'm sad that the only movie I've seen with Ray Milland is Frogs. Need to change that.
New editor?

3 cuts to The Lost Weekend...I'm glad you guys think your audience is so forgetful. Great video though, keep up the nice work everyone!
guys plz plz review falling down with Michael douglas and Barbara Hershey and Frederick for rest et al!!!! it's so relevant to me as a human being with deep introverted opinions on human nature and what a backlash is all about. you are very entertaining! ! keep on trucking.
Craig must have gone through his soup by now.
