I think reading/experiencing everything applies to philosophy as well. In the same way that reading a bad book can teach you how not to write, reading a philosophy you disagree with can strengthen your own position and cause you to seek out and possibly fix the flaws of your own philosophy.

I think Matt bears a striking resemblance to Orson Welles. I wouldn't mind seeing these two act in a movie. I bet they would be incredible. I'd love to see them in a film noir. btw, I love Seen It. I always hear about films I have never seen before. I am an insomniac, and I'm sitting here with a drink in my hand, so when I heard you guys discuss "Barfly", I knew I had a way to kill a couple of hours. I have never even heard of Barfly until tonight.Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway? You betcha. Thank you WTTB. You never disappoint.

Mr Bowler Hat, was the lovely and talented Alan Badel. Best know for his work with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Primarily a stage actor he also was in films radio and TV. Mostly in the 60s and 70s. He did The Count of Monticristo and the Children of the Damned. He had smaller parts in films eg The Adventurers and quite a few others.
He was a soldier in WW2 he saw a lot of action. Was promoted twice, was in the D day landings and was also platoon seargent in the paratroopers . Dropped behind enemy lines in France. His father was French so he was fluent in the language. Finally he was bombed on a troop ship bound for Japan. This rendered him profoundly deaf for 3 months before he regained a small amount of hearing but was still several deaf and operated mostly by lip reading. After that he went to RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. Won the gold medal and was accepted into the Royal Shakespeare Company. His career was limited by his disability as he could not cope with larger stages so most of his acclaimed stage career was with the Old Vic in London. A smaller venue but very famous. Known also for his extremely lovely speaking voice.

That, like all of your shows was incredibly enjoyable and educational at the same time. I'm wondering if you've ever considered doing the British film, Dead of Night (1945) on your show. Another anthology film, it truly is a classic I think you both would enjoy. It also has a very intriguing wrap-around story which is scary, thought-provoking, and clever in the extreme.

Ever seen the series of horror anthologies from Amicus? The production company was like the lesser known Hammer Films of the 60's and 70's. Asylum (1972) and Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (fantastic film title) are a couple of favourites. Lots of famous names pop up. Fun stuff.

The last movie I thought was good that you guys told me was bad was An Irrational Fear of Everything. I felt you made valid points about him being very unattractive in his underwear, but I still thought his performance was great and the laundry obsessed serial killer was just weird enough to hold my attention. To each their own, I suppose.

Wahay! That was a surprise! Great show. I quite liked Schizopolis but it's very bad to show to people for the first time at 2am after a lot of drinking. I liked the editing and layers of "film-within-film" naratives. It's also filled with many very memorable lines (memorable just because they're stupid) - "Nose army"

Speaking of going into paintings, this is giving me a wicked acid flashback to the insane Canadian children's film The Peanut Butter Solution. Have you seen it? Until the invention of the internet, I was never sure whether I actually had or whether it was a warped memory of some childhood fever dream. Googling "child labor sweatshop magical paintbrush factory" finally helped me find the title and work through my trauma.

I remember seeing this movie some years ago and finding it enjoyable. Is it a bad film? No, it isn't a great film either. It's a film that explores interesting tidbits that clearly couldn't make it as an entire film. It's kind of interesting how in 1955 it was more feasible to show a movie like that where it would be almost impossible today. It's kind of a shame because I have to admit the painting one is arguably the most interesting even if it is the most supernatural.

  • @deadpan80

a much better "going into a painting" story is featured in the Night Gallery pilot movie, written by Twilight Zone scribe Rod Sterling, and starring Richard Kiley as a Nazi fugitive who discovers that he can enter a painting in a South America museum. When a local recognizes him, he must make a desperate escape into the painting to evade the police but ends with a customary twist!

I think, before watching the movies, you should give your opinion on whether you think you'll like `em and see how it matches up after.
Why are you both wearing all white and gold today?
The Dutch angles of BatMan were a great device; did this movie have Leitmotifs?
If they remake this, should Shannon or Buscemi play Edgar?
You set us up for a more in depth description of paintings and murder and didn't really pay off at the end there.

Siskel and Ebert turned me on to some good films during the years that I watched them, but they also gave thumbs-down to "Reservoir Dogs," "Brazil," and "Splash." And Ebert notoriously said no to "Blue Velvet." As much as I enjoyed their conversations about movies, I think the thumbs-up/thumbs-down thing was a HUGE mistake even though it became so much a part of their branding. They should have shared their opinions and then left it up to viewers as to whether or not they wanted to see the films. If I let "Two thumbs down!" convince me not to see something, I would have missed out on films that eventually became favorites. And as a guilty pleasure (which Gene and Roger occasionally admitted they had themselves), that would have included "Two Moon Junction." What can I say, I'm only human!

The only movie I can think of that was truly bad was Meet the Feebles. It was crass and disgusting, and while I'm not opposed to that sort of thing, it felt very juvenile, like Peter Jackson was doing it just for the sake of being offensive. The worst part of it was that the movie was so incoherent, there were so many different stories and subplots going on and the movie just didn't flow well at all. Everything about that movie was painful.

Hey Matt, I noticed you get splotchy towards the end of some shows. I'm assuming this is a reaction to having a couple of drinks while you film? I get the same reaction. May I suggest taking 180mg of fexofenadine hydrochloride (a common antihistamine) with your first drink? It works wonders for me and has seriously improved my social life. I saw a specialist and he said that there's no harm in doing this every time you have a drink.
