This song is especially personal to Garfunkel.... when he was in college his college roommate lost his vision to glaucoma and left college depressed not talking to anyone. Garfunkel convinced him to go back to college and adjusted his own school schedule to be able to walk his friend to all his classes. Garfunkel gave himself the nickname Darkness in empathy to his friend. So 'hello Darkness my old friend' is a comfort. This song has so many different meanings... When schools, especially public schools from kindergarten through high school, run out of funding, the first programs they cut ✂️ are the art's, music, theater, etc. Also, ISOLATION, DIVISION, LONELINESS, NOT COMMUNICATING, NOT STANDING UP FOR OUR RIGHTS OR EXPRESSING OURSELVES AND WHAT WE BELIEVE IN. Simon and Garfunkel wrote this song when television first came out and that he recalls the silence. Neon light is referred to as the light of old tv's when they first came out. Looking at this song now, they were seeing how tv would stop communication with each other. I see this song is NOW MORE relevant, with how far we have come in technology, with gamers and cell phones. Nobody looks up and talk anymore. Sad but so true and to know in 1960's that they were so spot on.

When I heard you say he had the voice of an angel I thought are you crazy but I then realized you hadn't got to that point yet. He has a beautiful voice but his looks and the background scenes give a dark vibe. The "meaning" of the song seems to be a mystery that can have multiple takes. I think the song was written in the early 60s so in my mind the "neon god" was television people paid attention to the TV instead of having conversations with family and neighbors. In the modern age, I think the "neon god" is the cell phone. People can be sitting with each other and texting or scrolling on their phones instead of talking.

I am in Heaven! 🌠 The Disturbed cover version of The Sound of Silence is amazing! Thanks for your reaction! One of the best songs for me of The Disturbed is Land of Confusion (Powerful cover version) 👍
Interesting trivia: David Draiman, the lead singer for Disturbed, actually trained as a Jewish Cantor (prayer and hymnal leader). He also studied for his law degree. Girl, you might not know this but this song is over 50 years old, composed and originally sung by (Paul) Simon & (Art) Garfunkel, a group popular in the late 60's, early 70's. Many singers/bands have performed this song, not just Disturbed.
It is interesting watching people listen to the official video of this song. The silence at the beginning reveals a lot about the person watching it. You were very patient and waited. Others are uncomfortable - but you didn’t seem to be. Great video.
The first time I ever heard this song, it moved me to tears, and I am 72 years old. I heard Simon and Garfunkle sing it, but it was like them saying a warning about something they could see on the horizon and David singing this as a scream of anger that we DID NOT LISTEN!
Not sure if anyone mentioned it to you or not. But Disturb’s usual music Has more of that angry and demonic vibe. Two of their songs that I love is “ Down with the sickness” and “Stupify”! It’s so awesome how David’s voice can sound so clean and powerful but how he can also scream and do the odd growling noises with his voice.
Originally from the Great Simon and Garfunkel. It was written for a specific purpose and personal connection. Disturbed did a live version on Conan years ago. If you want to hear a different take on the same song there is a group called Pentatonix that did "cover" the song. Warning, PTX covers are often called Upgrades by both fans and the original song writers. Their beat boxer Kevin is a beast, playing the Cello while Beatboxing (he calls it Cello Boxing) and he keeps the tempo for the group. Each member sings a verse so you don't feel alone like one person.

It is powerful and if watched correctly, an amazing creature. Hope you check it out and thank you for having a positive affect on me today.
I am 65 years old--this song was written by Simon and Garfunkel in 1963-64 mostly in response to the assassination of JFK --the end of the Camalot vision of a better world as produced by an advanced society --the turmoil in our society with raging poverty and the beginnings of Vietnam. It was a very dark and melancholy time --unfortunately Simon and Garfunkel did not have the power to convey that --other than the wording, While excellent musicians and writers they simply did not have the ability of David Draimen to convey the Angst and futility of the direction of our society then or now. I have watched many reactions to this song --it is distressing to see the number of people who can feel the power of the song --sense that there is a deeper message and yet cannot either decipher or refuse to decipher the message. We are failing as a society --they can feel it as could Simon and Garfunkel 60 years ago ---the words of the prophets of the are still written on the subway walls --I strongly suggest you think seriously about what those words say or don't say about the future !!!-------If only we had had David Draimen back then we might not be where we are now.
I once heard someone say that the original (by Simon and Garfunkel) was a gentle warning of things to come while Disturbed's is more rage that the warning wasn't heeded. It strikes me as a completely accurate observation.
Always a ten out of ten every day of the year but a 12 out of 10 on the last Sounnnnnnnd in the last line really is powerful and is beautifully done. Now am a fan of all their songs and i had never heard of them untill 2022. GOD asked David the singer if he wated to dound like an angel or demon. David said yes. He is a truly wonder man, a properly trained Jewish Cantor. He js not scared to sing songs that may seem controversial or scary or even happy and angelic but each of these songs has part of his heart in it and a lot sre sung with real life experiences. Some maybe disturbing eg Inside the fire but he will give a warning befire the videos if they arenlikely to some people grief or uneasineds . It seems firnhis most disturbing song which i will watch the whole of, he has released an edited ir altered softer version for thise whi can not hand the topic of such songs. Hes been through so much in life and were lucky to still have him on earth .
Another great Disturbed song , showing off how he is able to smoothly transition between his "clean", cantor-trained voice and his metal rasp is "The Light". I think you'd like it too.
3:53 I agree he sounds like an angel, but not your typical angel wearing white with wings, flying around. I picture the angels of City of Angels, like Nicholas Cage’s character.

One day we may find someone who has both the patience and/or the courage to listen to the whole song without the need to express their opinion before the song is sung. If they feel the chills and tingles along their spine now, imagine who they might've felt if they'd allowed the spell to be fully cast... for Music is Magic... oh well.
You need to listen to the original. It was written as a warning about the direction society was taking and was a little softer with sadness. This version is performed with anger that we hadn't listened to the warning. David, the singer, was trained as a classical cantor. I love both versions.
If you get a chance you should check out the live version of this song. And when you watch it keep in mind that the lead singer was sick the day of that performance. This guys voice is underrated. He is amazing. I have a request. Check out Five Finger Death Punch and the video for Wrong Side of Heaven
The first stanza Simon refers to darkness as being his "old friend" that he came to talk with because he was awoken in the middle of the night, of a nightmare that still lingers in his head, that gives his a considerable amount of distress. So bad that the awful visions were still flashing before his eyes as he is awake. Second stanza begins setting the scene in which the dream took place: at night, him walking along the cobblestone road where he stops below the light of a streetlight. The cold chill runs up his back, so he lifts his collar to the "cold and damp." Just then, a blight neon sign lit up, showing that he, in fact, was not alone. But there were "ten thousand maybe more" all gathered in the cold night. The people who are talking, not speaking, are politicians, who are using false words to sway the population to vote for them, never revealing true intentions. The people therefore are hearing are not listening. They are taking these words that are spoken to them in plain value, not examining or putting into depth anything that is said. Because of this, as referred to later, these politicians have formed a government that the people in fact voted for and supported until it began to act as a dictatorship. This seems that Simon is making an inditement to a large government that has taken away the freedoms of its people. A future for America it seemed with the rise of government in world affairs as in entered Vietnam. This "future America" has given Americans everything, and has the power the take it all away, hence the people "bow and pray to the neon god they made." The Silence that is referred to is the silence of the people, afraid to say anything against the government for fear of death or worse. Simon, or whoever has had this dream, tries to bring people to speak out. Saying "Fools, you do not know, Silence like a cancer grows" that as more are afraid to speak, the more control the government takes and the less anyone will stand up to the new government. As all hope is about to be given up, someone steps up and says to the crowd that the future they will hold has been written on the walls of subways and tenement halls. This is because this form of protest can be done anonymously, therefore no one can get in trouble for it. This begins the whispering in the silence of the people, and starts the beginning of a revolt.

Just saying. So says Austin Tx!!!! 😍😍😍🍸😎
As has already been said, the original is by Simon & Garfunkel, which is different, but equally as good (in my opinion anyway). Simon & Garfunkel did many other fantastic songs, such as The Boxer and Bridge Over Troubled Water, well worth a listen.
This is a cover of Simon and Garfunkel. The songs about 60 years old and yet the original version and the cover version have two separate meanings and not a word was changed.
You need to listen to Pentatonix sing Sound of Silence , The Prayer , and Amazing Grace ( the chains are broken ) . Oh, and Hallelujah. They are a fantastic A Cappella group.
I agree with the comments saying that S&G's version was a warning. I get the feeling that this version is saying "Damn you. You've had all these years to learn and you STILL HAVEN'T GOT IT YET!" I'd like to sit at a Trump rally and play this as loud as possible. Right after Neil Diamond's "America." If you ever do a Neil Diamond song, I suggest "And the Grass Won't Pay No Mind." I still cry hearing it and my husband has been gone 26 years now.
It’s said that the original was a warning of things to come and this version is what happens when no one listened to the warning , Simon Heard him sing this and said that the song was now his he thought it was beautiful
FALSE. Paul Simon shared it on his social media but HE DID NOT tell Disturbed it's their song now. This is a MYTH circulating TH-cam, regurgitated by people who don't know how to Google. These people are conflating this song with 'Hurt' in which the original singer DID tell Johnny Cash that it's his song now. Let this myth die now.
First things first I wanted to tell you you are absolutely beautiful. And I also really like your hairstyle it is super cute. This was produced in 2015. Think they knew what was coming? Spread the werd!
I’ve never seen anything as beautiful as you watching you listening to this song, your reaction was so genuine, you were mesmerized and I couldn’t take my eyes off you ☺️
I am in Heaven!
Stacey You Explained David’s Voice To The T !! I Couldn’t Quit Put It Into Words Bt You Nailed It . & Thank You For Explaining That To Me .
I can tell you’re really listening and I love the real reaction.!!! Yu da best.!! (DJ Khalid voice)
Girl Yes , I Really Be Tryna Catch The Meaning Fr Bc You Know Ion Do No Research Just Genuine Reactions . Thank You , That Warms My Heart To Hear .
I Have The Best Supporters Standing Behind Me , No Doubt 🤍✨
Angel to righteous anger. Watch him do it live. Absolutely amazing!
You had one of the better reactions to this video. I really appreciate how you listened to it and paid attention to the video. Pink Floyd “The Wall” is a video comprised of multiple songs and videos.
Love the visual story that comes with this beautiful song …💙🎶🎶🎶🎶
God is sending a very Powerful Message in this song to All of us & David is singing it from the depth of his soul...BEAUTIFUL....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another great Disturbed song , showing off how he is able to smoothly transition between his "clean", cantor-trained voice and his metal rasp is "The Light". I think you'd like it too.
Absolutely loved this reaction to my most favorite verson of this song. You're beautiful, keep up the great work.
This will never not give me chills.
This one is hauntingly beautiful ❤️ amazing reaction as always
Thank You JB ❤️ It’s Always A Pleasure Receiving An Honest Comment From You !!
@@DoIttMiaaaa your welcome young legend in the making ❤️💯 keep killing it !
Thank You JB , Thank You . Humbled By Your Comment ❤️
Everyone needs to listen to the original song which came out in 1964 and see how much he did with this song.
This was the greatest performance ever
3:53 I agree he sounds like an angel, but not your typical angel wearing white with wings, flying around. I picture the angels of City of Angels, like Nicholas Cage’s character.
Loved your reaction I saw your face and when you got the feeling was awesome. My jaw dropped at his range and how good it was compared to the original Simon & Garfunkel is mind blowing. I would love to see you do a reaction to Jinjer - Pisces (Live Session) her voice is out of this world she is going to rock your world you just got yourself a new subscriber *\o/*
This Is Awesome Feedback , Thank You !! & Also Thanks For Subscribing To The Channel 🙂 I’m Adding Your Suggestion To My Reaction List Now .
🎉😅fantastic
You get it... this song is very deep .the more yu hear it the more yu understand
One day we may find someone who has both the patience and/or the courage to listen to the whole song without the need to express their opinion before the song is sung. If they feel the chills and tingles along their spine now, imagine who they might've felt if they'd allowed the spell to be fully cast... for Music is Magic... oh well.
I get goosebumps every time I hear this!
I think you will also enjoy the incredible version by Pentatonix 'sound of silence' official video
All Simon and Garfunkel songs are great........check them out as well.....
Definitely Adding Them To My Reaction List . Thank You John 🙂
You need to listen to the original. It was written as a warning about the direction society was taking and was a little softer with sadness. This version is performed with anger that we hadn't listened to the warning. David, the singer, was trained as a classical cantor. I love both versions.
I subscribed to your channel today. I cried all through this song. Thanks for sharing this awesome song and video ❤
A true masterclass in vocals.
Disturbed are so SO good at covers. This, "Land of Confusion", Still havent found what I'm looking for, Shout. All incredible stuff
Totally awesome, brilliant and beautiful song! This cover version exceeds the original in a masterful way.
Simon and Garfunkle's was a warning - Disturbed's is a primal scream.
Great reaction 👍... love this song and band..
Wow what a amazing song beautiful voice keep up the great reaction 🤍🤍🤍🤍💙💙💙
This "future America" has given Americans everything, and has the power the take it all away, hence the people "bow and pray to the neon god they made."
The Silence that is referred to is the silence of the people, afraid to say anything against the government for fear of death or worse.
Enjoyed your reaction, thank you! Now, you need to check out the live version on the "Conan" show.
I don’t know how you popped up on my list but glad it did! I love your hair, and in case nobody has told you recently you have beautiful eyes! No I am not gay or a weirdo, just a mum who watches TH-cam to distract from the pain from my back! Also from Australia.
Awe Kate , You’re Truly Sweet . Thank You For Sharing Such Kind Words w Me . I Appreciate You Taking The Time Out To Leave A Comment & Also Happy I Popped Up On Your Recommendations List 😅
I Appreciate Your Continued Support 🤍✨
My 1st time hearing this song was from the movie trolls haha ... journey is another good band to listen to " open arms"
you should also go and watch the live performance. with the orchestra at his back, it really pops
I hear ya! This version is deep on so many levels..
Rightt Ron 🤯
Great cover reaction. To me Simon and Garfunkel the original writers and performers were telling us back in the 60’s when I first heard the song to get our shit together or the future won’t be pretty and David’s version is saying oh well the shit has now hit the fan!!!!!
Mrs. Robinson is a good one as well .
Someone said that he is classically trained and in Cantor, though I'm not sure just what that is yet!
Love your reaction girl! I get goosebumps every time
Awe Debi Thank You 🙂 I Appreciate The Positive Feedback !!
You need to watch Disturbed's Video of their song, ( Hold on to Memories ). The man's Voice is Fire, and so is the song !!!🔥🔥
Great Suggestion Tina , I’ll Add It To My Reactions List . Thank You For Your Feedback 🙂
Beautiful girl -- Beautiful reaction.
Awe 🙂 Thank You !!
Chills Every Damn Time
Great song. Great Cover. He is amazing singer. His performance on Conan was epic. To enjoy another angel and demon singer react to Jinjer "Pisces".
I tear up every damn time😂💓
Another great one by Disturbed is Hold On To Memories. It has a beautiful message!!!
Also T
"The House of The Rising Sun" by The Animals...Incredible
First things first I wanted to tell you you are absolutely beautiful. And I also really like your hairstyle it is super cute. And I don't know if you're aware of this or not the song The Sound of Silence was actually made by a group called Simon and Garfunkel from back in the day. You might want to try to look up the original and then kind of compare both versions of the song.
