I graduated from high school the year this song came out composed and produced by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. It was my absolute favorite then, and even more so now after listening to this version. You will never be able to beat this rendition. Paul Simon said this is the way the song was meant to be sung.
xD check out Heartattack in a Layby by Porcupine Tree if you want a truly truly sad song to get a good cry out of :) it's about a guy that has a fight with his wife and takes a drive to clear his head and slowly succumbs to, and describes the symptoms of having a heart attack and dying while wishing only in the end that "I just want, to say sorry, and that we'll grow old together". As if his ghost is already reaching out from his body trying to say he's sorry that that was the last time they would see each other. Simple, sad and beautiful.

The delivery of the words make you pay attention in Disturbeds version. I was born in 1963, the only S&G song I remember on the radio was ‘Bridge over troubled water.‘ I never liked that gentle folksy music. Gimme Hard Rock of the ‘60s & ‘70s any day!
This song speaks volumes to me. My heart hurts for the meaning in this song. People have lost the meaning of unity and compassion. This world has become a dark and sad place for a lot of people. I can’t do this alone. We must open our hearts to music and it’s meaning. It helps many lost and lonely people. It also hurts many that feel there is no answer. I always loved the original by Simon and Garfunkle but every time I listen to Disturb's version it makes me cry and I feel it does something special to my soul.
I generally don't like remakes of songs, however this IS the exception. The original was done in the 60s during the peace and love, flower children era. Disturbed's rendition, I belive gets at the heart of how people worldwide are feeling. You can literally feel the emotion to your core, anger, frusteration, questioning at the soul level of what our belief systems are - as a society money and profit are the gold standards. Maybe it is now time for us to take a look at what we have allowed ourselves to create and come up with a better way of doing things, question our paradigms...is it worth it?
I actually prefer this version over the original...mainly because of the passion that David sings this song! He also has some really great songs on the "Evolution" album....one of my favorites is "A Reason to Fight" that deals with addiction, depression, etc. I am 23 years, 4 months and 14 days sober...and I don't take anything for granted. Some think after such a long time that I don't have to fight every second, minute and hour of every day! I know what I am and I know how to win each and every moment! So I fight! If you do not like this version, I am surprised. His version is awesome. I was a fan of Simon and Garfunel back in the day. I reviewed the music and remember the songs fondly. David brings a new dimension to the song that I remember. Great singing and music to go with it.
@@Penniesmusicandfood wow, I thought I was the only one to have it played at my funeral. I will have two songs but that being first so people appreciate not just me if they did, but appreciate the way the song is sung. Thanks for doing the same as me. I don't feel so alone now
This just gave me chills. Loved this version. I am 68 years old and never heard of this group. Not into metal but this was just amazing. Sounds of Silence is one of my all-time favorite songs.
This song has a lot of meaning for me. I loved the original by Simon & Garfunkel. I’m 48, will turn 49 in March. My mom introduced me to a lot of music from the 60’s and 70’s. She loved Simon & Garfunkel and I had the privilege of taking my mom to see them live in concert in the early 2000’s. Now…I listen to all kinds of music from all genres and time periods. But my mom was way more knowledgeable about current music than myself. She absolutely LOVED this version of this song. It gave so much more feeling than the original and she and I both felt great emotion when listening to this version along with the video. It will always have a very special place in my heart because I lost my mom in 2021 just before her 70th birthday. I still listen to it regularly but must admit I cry every time. It reaches deep into my soul and overwhelms my feelings of loss which I still have not been able to come to terms with.
His voice is like that of angel and a demon. It manages to elicit strong emotions so well , I've always gotten emotional listening to him singing this song. Alot of his songs have real meaning and also a lot are from personal experiences. The official music video has wonderful visual effects , wonderful music and beautiful vocals. Just a phenomenal piece of work. I never even heard of Disturbed until this song when I saw it early 2022. Now I love it and all their stuff. All music, TV, movies, books etc if done well should elicit emotions. A sign of a great artist is if they can make you cry. I'm a 56 year old guy been around music all my life and not ashamed to say every time I hear this song I cry but not sad tears just emotional reaction I guess.
This song just hits all the emotional beats to be sung with such serious force as David Draimen embodies...a man walks through the city in the cold rain, watching the flickering neon signs for bars, brothers, and bodegas as people run in and out catering to their vices...suddenly he realizes what has happened, we have constructed a neon god of consumerism and technology that is destroying our humanity...and so he rages as desperately searches for that human connection in words, ears, and hands...but then he see's the truth, the "Words of the prophets" in the "Fuck You's" and other graffiti scrawled across the subway walls and tenement halls...worshiping this neon god will only lead us to hate and destruction...
the arangement, dynamics, amazing, the vocals are insane, (from an orgional oldie S&G decader) absolutly insane vocals with the arrangment to back those pipes up
David Draiman...amazing range and control...a powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime, which is incredibly difficult to do . He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful and pure tonal properties to it! ...one of the best male vocalists on the planet imho. Loved your reaction.
I’ve heard it a hundred times now, and it Still brings me to tears, and gives me chills. There’s so much to unpack, both in the original, and here in this version….💜
I've never heard Disturbed before, but after hearing this performance I'm a fan. So rich, so powerful, sung with such emotion and passion. I'm a 71 year old man and every time I hear this song it connects to my soul and I cry every time I play it. If the band is listening I want more like this. I love the orchestration, the talent, the sound and control of his vocals, the distortion he uses it never sounds forced or strained, truly amazing!!
Being a 67 year old that happens to love many different genres of music, I have to say this performance of my beloved Simon And Garfunkel blew me away! It was awesome. Instead of just a warning like the original, this was anger and rage to the world along with the warning. I love this version! Everyone should listen and take heed. Thank you for reacting to this.
This is the best cover of this song that I have ever heard. Powerful voice, beautiful arrangement, & the video is a piece of art! Love Disturbed!!! Can listen to this over & over. Even though I heard it when it came out. Good reaction!
I must have watched it a hundred times. I just love the way he does this song. I saw Simon and Garfunkel 40 some odd years ago in Central Park but I have to say I think this version is better. I especially like the live on Conan
I only recently was introduced to this myself maybe about a month or so ago by one of my brothers. I think it was the first time in all of my 63 years that my brother had ever shared a song with me like that because it had touched him so much. I feel the same way. I can't get enough of it. It stirs something very deep within you and causes you to long for something you can't quite place your finger on. I could say much more about that, but that's a enough for here and now I reckon. Take care!
I’m an old guy who grew up with the original version It took me a couple of times listening to this version , it actually fits this song better than the original . He did a fantastic job
He earned his group name "Disturbed" with this cover. The voice, the emotions and the facial expression fell in line with the lyrics. This is the best cover of this song by far. You are not the only one living under a rock because I came to hear this for the first time about a month ago. Great reaction Strongdad.
The original was written in 1964. He is a very trained talented performer, and he deserves much credit. He has so much control over his vocals and it shows the dedication he has towards his passion in music. That cover he made his own.
You don't take a song as significant as this and make it your own. The risk is high and it can in the long run, ruin your credit. They took this song and made it their own! It takes strong talent to do that! Outstanding!!!!
I happened across your TH-cam and was simply blown away with it! I am a grandmother (67) and first time I heard Sound of Silence …. It is incredible! It is so beautiful!!!! I actually worked a concert for Disturbed years ago and they were no where near doing anything like this back then. Thank you for watching and reacting to the song and for putting such a great and needed outlet for folks. PS…. Your followers are so respectful and you are reason for that!!! Thanks again for letting an old woman past her prime chat with y’all!!! May God Bless you All!!’
I liked the Sound of Silence back then, but I was a rocker, this version is so much better, David brought it to life!! I got to see Disturbed in the early 2000's and after the concert which I loved I told my friends, " that dude can really sing"!!! I was in my 50' then, and I'm still rocking !!!!
I do not agree. Both the original and this version are top notch IMHO. both hit an 11 out of 10. You shall listen to the version in central park. You get chills. Ok, they do not sing this strong, but you do not have to sing physically strong to get a strong message, intensity can be more subtle.
It's just a masterpiece. Brings me to tears everytime. I don't know how many times I've listened to it but I never get tired of hearing it and also watch the reactions of people who've never heard of it. The ominous tone is out of this world.
You were quite speechless and emotional at the end of the song, we were lucky to see Disturbed play this live a few years ago in Cardiff when they were the support for Avenged Sevenfold , David Draimans voice blew us away what an amazing remake of this beautiful song and so powerful I still feel the same listening to it now as the first time I heard it ❤
Someone once said that when God asked David if he wanted a voice of an angel or a demon he said Yes. Just a phenomenal singer he is in whatever type of music he chooses. I absolutely love how he holds the Sounnnnnnd in the final line for so long. If you haven't heard of Dire Straits Alchemy live tour 1983 I'd recommend Sultans of Swing and also Telegraph road. 2 brilliant songs to react to.
The first time i heard this i heard from a friend to check it out so i pulled it up on TH-cam on my tv and cranked the volume. I sat there completely blown away almost to tears. Like you said, the build up through the song really grabs you! Not many songs will give you goosebumps like this one.
Me being in my 50's, I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel. I spent decades listening to the original. Fast forward to the late 90's, early 2000... I always thought Disturbed had a very unique sound, and they have definitely evolved throughout the years. When their rendition of "Sound of Silence" came out, I gave it a listen. After the first time, I just sat there, dumbfounded, and in shock. I simply stared at my phone screen for several moments, before I hit "replay". Second time around, I'm sobbing... a deep running gamut of emotions. My heart gave a standing ovation and clapped with intent. Conviction. They did justice. And now, to this day, I still feel the same way as I did then. Absolutely beautiful.
As a musician of 30+ years, I truly feel they brought Paul Simom's genius song writing into a higher level of meaning. David's vocal was like a "call to arms". I like watching "real" reactions and yours was real 👍. You have an interesting background for your video.
I was in high school when the original by Simon and Garfunkel came out with it. It was more like a folk song feeling to it . This version has a much more intense, powerful and urgency to it. I much prefer this version in these times.
I've seen him over 20xs his VOICE is amazing!!!!! It's NEVER pushed just flows like if was normal speaking.. He was a trained Cantor, and would I love to hear him do that... This was pure perfection, his voice is next level. Glad you enjoyed it too
This version of the song is sooooo powerful. Magnificent. Claudeleblanc wrote: 'Simon and Garfunkel sang a warning. Disturbed sings a scolding for not having heeded the warning.' And that's true.
Reading through the comments , I can't agree more! Disturbed's re- creation of this song is so powerful and it always leaves me feeling like there's somehow a larger purpose for my being! I don't know how to explain it but it's like an awakening deep inside of me every time I hear it! Just sooo powerful!
Was absolutely blown away when I heard this for the first time earlier last year. I remember when Simon and Garfunkel released the original and it's always been in my top ten loved songs, so I approached this with trepidation. I can't see anyone, ever, surpassing this. This is now my definitive rendition and I literally have listened to it fifty or more times in the last four months. I love watching people reactions to the first time they hear it. You see so many preconceived notions disappear and eyes start to glow.
I love it because the original was a caution that people were not communicating with each other and this is anger because it was not heeded. It truly speaks to our times.
I love the original and I love this. I wasn't expecting 6o. For me, putting it in a nutshell, the original makes me THINK, while this version makes me FEEL.
I was in my physical therapy class after a double mastectomy talking to my therapist about all the concerts I attended in the 60s and 70s. She recommended I listen to this after I told about hearing so many old bands in San Francisco and missing the feeling of those days. I saw Simon and Garfunkel in concert in 1967. Disturb has done this song proud. So different from their albums I listen to today.
I truly have been living under a rock... Let me know in the comments why you like this cover so much!
The sheer emotion and his buildup to the finished product. Amazing cover.

If you do not like this version, I am surprised. His version is awesome. I was a fan of Simon and Garfunel back in the day. I reviewed the music and remember the songs fondly. David brings a new dimension to the song that I remember. Great singing and music to go with it.
Give me chills and cry everytime i hear. Its on my funeral playlist
He has the PERFECT VOCALS>>> his voice is AMAZING!!!
@@42Mrgreenman well said, well said.
the arangement, dynamics, amazing, the vocals are insane, (from an orgional oldie S&G decader) absolutly insane vocals with the arrangment to back those pipes up
David Draiman...amazing range and control...a powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime, which is incredibly difficult to do . He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful and pure tonal properties to it! ...one of the best male vocalists on the planet imho. Loved your reaction.
David Dramon has been classically operatically trained… he can sing ANYTHING, hit every note and pitch perfectly, with pre😢and control- a true gem
I got goosebumps the first time I heard this version. I STILL get goosebumps every time I hear it!
The original makes you think. This version makes you feel
Beautiful! Doesn't matter if from 1964 or 2023!
Take care!
I share this exactly! My brother introduced me to it also - something he has never done before, or since… sublime…
Live version on Conan O'Brian show will knock you socks off!!
I’m an old guy who grew up with the original version
It took me a couple of times listening to this version , it actually fits this song better than the original . He did a fantastic job
David has all ranges the man is truly a pure phenomenon.
And the silence waits to the storm.
BEAUTIFUL SONG
BEAUTIFUL VOICE
Absolutely Beautiful , David's voice DEMANDS we hear the message , before it's to late.Great reaction.❤️
Absolutely beautiful rendition
I happened across your TH-cam and was simply blown away with it! I am a grandmother (67) and first time I heard Sound of Silence …. It is incredible! It is so beautiful!!!! I actually worked a concert for Disturbed years ago and they were no where near doing anything like this back then.
Thank you for watching and reacting to the song and for putting such a great and needed outlet for folks. PS…. Your followers are so respectful and you are reason for that!!! Thanks again for letting an old woman past her prime chat with y’all!!! May God Bless you All!!’
I am 68 and was memorized by this cover
Disturbed did this song justice and it is blowing up I’m so glad this is come out now at this time when we so desperately need to hear this message
Excellent, beautiful he sings great❤😊
I’m with Paul Simon ❤️ing
Disturbed’s version‼️🤗💝
It's just a masterpiece. Brings me to tears everytime. I don't know how many times I've listened to it but I never get tired of hearing it and also watch the reactions of people who've never heard of it. The ominous tone is out of this world.
I am 63 years old this man sang with no fault through this whole song! I held my cats paws as she died to this song November 8th 2024!
You were quite speechless and emotional at the end of the song, we were lucky to see Disturbed play this live a few years ago in Cardiff when they were the support for Avenged Sevenfold , David Draimans voice blew us away what an amazing remake of this beautiful song and so powerful I still feel the same listening to it now as the first time I heard it ❤
What to say...it is epic and a masterpiece of music.
It is like a orgasm starting soft and ended into a explosion.
✊🔥✊🔥✊🔥✊
Someone once said that when God asked David if he wanted a voice of an angel or a demon he said Yes.
Just a phenomenal singer he is in whatever type of music he chooses. I absolutely love how he holds the Sounnnnnnd in the final line for so long.
If you haven't heard of Dire Straits Alchemy live tour 1983 I'd recommend Sultans of Swing and also Telegraph road. 2 brilliant songs to react to.
😢😢😢😢 just absolutely noks me sideways 😢❤❤ gets me so emotional beautiful ❤❤❤
I never thought I would like a version of this song as much as the original. This is absolutely amazing! His voice if flawless!
I absolutely love it, I play it every day 😮❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Reading through the comments , I can't agree more! Disturbed's re- creation of this song is so powerful and it always leaves me feeling like there's somehow a larger purpose for my being! I don't know how to explain it but it's like an awakening deep inside of me every time I hear it! Just sooo powerful!
I'm 63 yrs old and have to state, Disturbed finally gave real emotion and meaning to the words of this song!
It's the best cover I've ever heard, even going so far as to be better than the original.
I love the original and I love this. I wasn't expecting 6o. For me, putting it in a nutshell, the original makes me THINK, while this version makes me FEEL.
The Live version on the Conan show is epic!!!!!!!!🔥
And he was sick there and had voice problems
I that man's voice. Such a grate arrangement. No one could ever done that better. Beautiful
This cover of the song is really great. David Draiman's vocals give me goosebumps and is very emotionally moving.
He should listen to disturb's live version on the Conan show from 2016 I believe. Probably the best performance I've ever heard!
This version is beautiful and powerful. The joining of musicians and songwriters at the end explains it for me. Good reaction. Thank you.
The visuals in this video are so striking and while I love David's vocals in this video I feel his performance vocally was even better on Conan Obrien
The body behind you made me jump as I felt the emotion of the song. 😆
