My interpretation of the song The Sound of Silence.
This song is written with two different perspectives or consciousnesses singing
it. Those that are waking up and those that have been awake for a very
long time. The first, third and fifth verse is sung from the perspective
of the unawakened and the second and forth verse are sung from the
    perspective of the awakened.
    Hello, darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
    Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
    Still remains
    Within the sound of silence
Hello, darkness, my old friend is about people that have been kept in
the dark and they're telling the darkness that they are experiencing
something new in their vision. They (the awakened/aware ones) planted
the seeds of truth/Light, and they are just starting to become aware.
In restless dreams I walked alone
    Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a streetlamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
    That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
There are fewer of the awakened, and they feel as if they are alone
under the Light of truth, because they refused to buy into the lies the
dark has been trying to feed them. Then one day they saw a crack in
the armor of dark, a tear in the matrix, if you will and in that moment they
saw a opportunity to break the sound of silence.
And in the naked light I saw
    Ten thousand people, maybe more
    People talking without speaking
    People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
    No one dared
    Disturb the sound of silence
And in that moment they saw all of the light workers/star seeds
    (awakened Ones) telling
those that were still asleep the truth/Light, through telepathy
those that were sleeping heard and saw the truth/Light in a very subtle way,
but yet they couldn't share this Light/truths with anyone for fear of
being attacked by those that controlled the sound of silence.
They wrote the truth in songs, the truth had to be give covertly as not
to disturb the sound of silence (the dark). And when the people became
aware of the Light/truth and realized that they had been in darkness the whole time,
    it really pissed them off.
"Fools," said I, "You do not know
    Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
They reached out to those still in slumber, trying to give them
Light/truths, but they wouldn't open their minds to new truths, instead
remained in the sound of silence.
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
    And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence."
The people were so caught up in working hard to pay for all of the
things, the boats, cars, electronics, all of the toys that they covet.
They couldn't see or hear the truth, they were too distracted by
consumerism. The awakened/prophets have been trying to tell them through
their songs and poems, and that whisper of Light/truth awakened the
people from their slumber and they became ONE. Did you notice the ship
sailing into the Light at the end?

This is a wonderfully performed cover of the original by Simon and Garfunkel and I think in my opinion the original is also just as powerful , it was released in the 60’s and the generations since have discovered its powerful and melodic even soothing sound. I suggest that you give it a listen if not for your own enjoyment.

There is a crescendo of intensity in this version of Sound of Silence that way exceeds that of the original version I am a USA rural primary care internist with a special interest in pathophysiology's pathos. My interpretation of this timeless song is that it applies to the current silence about darkness in:
    1) the terrible human tragedies caused by Russian terrorism of Ukraine not being confronted by a Russian populace that believes its government propaganda and remains relatively silent about the brutality toward innocents imposed by the "special military operation"
    2) the silence of American politicians, right and left, to how Israel treats advocates of a Palestinian State
    3) The silence of many to the evolving social injustice issues in Nepal including safe and just access to healthcare
    4) the unavailability of just & comprehensive healthcare access in the USA, magnified by disparities of outcomes in rural versus metropolitan areas, black or the indigenous peoples versus non-Hispanic whites and the silence of physicians regarding unaddressed pathophysiology causing widespread pathos
    5) the overt greed of corporate America, especially magnified by those who set prices based on silence concerning profiteer power & lack of focus on the value of products and services being delivered.
    6) the unnecessary hospitalization and deaths due to COVID because of a lack of physician awareness of illness pathophysiology and a lack of integration in the USA, of primary care with public health & mental health coupled with a silence about unnecessary illness pathos & lack of intervention savvy. There is an intervention synthesized in Germany > 90 years ago, namely Benfotiamine certified by the German E-commission as being safe for human use, that when used with other antioxidants such as purple sweet potato powder, can have a very safe and effective outcome effect on COVID illness. In the USA voices are silenced citing the evidence based literature on RNA virus activation of Nuclear Factor kappa Beta (NF-kB) and the inhibition of NF-kB activation by a wide variety of antioxidants acting epigenetically. Silence about injustice and incompetence forever marches on in many forms. The silence of USA physicians to the multitude of unresolved issues in our delivery of health care is deafening.
When Darkness promulgated injustice or unnecessary harm to innocents is met with silence by most, sadness must result.
In April 1967, I attended a speech by Martin Luther King Jr. at Memorial Auditorium, Stanford University. In that speech he gave his first public comments about an opposition to the USA's participation in the Vietnam conflict. He was plastered in the question session by Hoover Institute voices. The Hoover Institute is populated by American conservative professors. It towers as a penis shaped building. We students nicknamed the Hoover Institute as being "Hoover's last erection." I thought about MLK Jr's bravery in breaking the silence of opposition. Looking up close at MLK Jr. one could not help but be struck by his sad eyes and broad shoulders. The sadness evoked by silent opposition to darkness especially that which results in harm to innocents struck me then as now as a crescendo that must be broken. In 1967 while studying in Germany under the auspices of Stanford in Germany one of my student colleagues asked how Germany could have allowed the Holocaust; and a professor responded: "Wir wussten, dass es nachts Züge gab, die Kinder, Frauen und Männer durch unsere Dörfer brachten; Aber wir schwiegen." I understood how that can happen and translated that understanding into my own MD, PhD life into not remaining silent when I encountered injustices run rampant in American medicine. I also believe that a multi-lingual union of concerned physicians world wide could have an immense set of good effects. I cry when any version of Sound of Silence is sung with crescendo emotion as this one was.

The best part? This song is a cover of the original from Simon and Garfunkel, released in 1966. Their version was a cautionary tale of people losing the ability to properly communicate (something they noticed happening in America). The tone is a lot lighter, while still carrying the same message as this cover here (and the intro has been memed to shit xD) Disturbed's version really comes across as telling the same tale after it already came true. We truly live in a society where communication has been harder than ever to maintain; the cell phones have put an isolating barrier around the younger generations, separating them from the older ones, capitalism has stimulated success and richness over valuing the simple things... and David's singing really illustrates his disdain to this state of the country.
What's more? Paul Simon himself said that this version of his and his friend's song made him cry. That this is the feeling they were originally going for. So props to David and his band; they managed to improve on the original! :)

I wonder if they know how long ago the song was when the song was first released by S&G.

My high school English teacher pointed out to me, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls." The graffiti this line points to is almost always "f@@k you" and "die you @#%" Prophets foretell the future, here a future of disrespect and violence. A simple lyric that distills the mood and message of the song.
