The bands original idea was to do a cover more in the style of the band. Someone suggested that they keep it mellow (relatively speaking) and this was the masterpiece that evolved. The live television version of this is even better.

I too went down the same rabbit hole with you about TH-cam reaction videos because of this song.
Being in my 60's, I remember hearing the original Simon & Garfunkel version on the radio frequently and I always liked it but it was mainly for Simon & Garfunkel's harmonies. It wasn't until I heard David Draiman sing it, that I actually understood what Paul Simon was trying to tell us almost 60 years ago.
This song and the live version on Conan O'Brien's show, quickly replaced my long time favorite, Nights In White Satin/Late Lament by the Moody Blues.

This is the song that made me realize what a cover can actually do. It's remarkable that it has the exact same lyrics as Simon and Garfunkel's folk ballad from the 60s, but it inspires a totally different feeling. The way David Draiman sings the lyrics, and the changes to the instrumentals, give the words a different meaning, so that listening to the cover is an entirely new experience. That, to me, is what a great cover should do: make you reconsider the song in a whole new light.

Technology wasn’t nearly as controlling then as it is today. It wasn’t a strong presence in our lives. Garfunkel is quoted as saying it’s about "the inability of people to communicate with each other, not particularly internationally but especially emotionally, so what you see around you are people unable to love each other."
Though I do think the lyrics have become almost an anthem in how we live our lives now, and seems much more poignant in current society than it was then. A song powerful when it was written, yet ahead of its time.

You’re so right. He sounds like a choir. So much overtone and range. That’s the perfect way to describe his amazing talent!

History review: Written between 63-65, during the cold war, beginning of the US involvement in the Vietnam war. Under the shadow of nuclear war. (The failed invasion of the Bay of Pigs (Cuba) by US financed & equipped soldiers was 1961). Elementary school children doing "bomb drills" throughout the 50's/early 60's, hiding under their desks as if that would keep them safe. By 10 my friends and I knew being under a desk had zero ability to protect us, but we went through the motions because it calmed the adults.
That's the era that generated this protest song ... I think David Draiman's new version planting it in the post-apocalypse is spot on for the current era.

Best cover of an already classic song I've ever heard. It's a protest song from the sixties...just as valid now with David Draiman howling it as it was when Simon and Garfunkel gently sang it...

This version always brings me to tears. Such a well done version. The lead singer Dave Draiman was actually given classical voice lessons.

I'm not sure this song should be covered.
    S & G were a sort of "break the mold" .
The 70's band "Yes" did a cover of S & G's "America", and it was a horrible distortion of the heartfelt original And I love "Yes".
    Hear for yourself:

And now compare to the original:

A 1965 song written by Paul Simon and re-done by Disturbed 2015 (50 years later) ...both are awe inspiring this version here is Phenomenal!! ~ easily the best song for me in the past 5 years

THE SONG WAS ALREADY PERFECT, it didn't need covering. This is ego over respect for the writing.
It's not badly sung but the original was so well balanced and tempered I find this an insult to writing & composing - and I dont give a shit if Paul Simon liked it - I would bet in his heart he thinks the same. If anyone knows performing classically, knows this is like mariah vs whitney. Whitney had the ear to not indulge in vocal arrogance.

"lashed out its warning and in the words that it was forming..." That FASCISM is forming and the PEOPLE are standing SILENT. They saw this in the 1960's and SIXTY years later, here we are.

This song is original from Simon and Garfunkel, much more softer and calmer. I think you know that Diturbed is a Heavy Metal Band and made this cover with an emazing success. If you wanna know, what kind of music they actually play, listen to "10000 fists" or "down with the sickness". (by the way: that´s my music). Greetings from Germany.
