I’m sitting here crying and shaking ….what in the world??!!!! How is it that this song has such power and effect on my most innermost soul? No matter how many times I listen, the same reaction. This version just slays me every single time! I can’t even fathom how anyone can listen to this and not be a quivering mess by the end. As a musician, I listen to and play many pieces and varieties of music and many affect me on a deep emotional level but none to the extent this particular one does….totally insane!

Best reaction to this song I've seen in a while... I've felt the same emotional connection, not sure why either, the first time I saw this performance....a hundred times later, same effect.... How can this version of a classic song have this kind of impact on people from all walks of life? Makes no sense, but I'm glad I witnessed this performance. I'd love to find out what the musicians, audience, and tv people felt as they were listening to this in person...WOW!!!🔥🔥✌️✌️👍👍🤗🤗☺️☺️

Not sure about the musicians, but I read in an interview a magazine had with Conan O'Brien, that after 20-30 seconds of this song, Conan said the entire group of backstage workers that night had come out from the back to see and listen to this performance. O'Brien said that he had never seen that happen, before or since.
      Peace.....

The original version said "listen up, here's a warning". This version said "HEY, I SAID LISTEN UP-NOW- HERE'S A WARNING ". The message is as important today as it was when written in the 60's.

Ooh. You *felt* that one. I love how much you let yourself experience the song. Metal has a reputation for being angry, but really it's about expressing full, raw emotion through music, and a lot of it is really beautiful.
If you want to poke around some more in the beautiful parts of metal that touch people's emotions, you should check out "Ghost Love Score" by Nightwish. I recommend the live version at the Wacken festival with their current vocalist, Floor Jansen (she's their third singer, who was classically trained). The song has incredible variety in vocal and musical style within itself, includes full background orchestration (with an instrumental bridge in the middle), and is often considered one of the great masterpieces of modern metal composition. Fair warning though, it's a long track, and reacting to it will bring on a hoard of rabid fans who will definitely tell you the entire history of the band and insist you watch more. The "Army" are super nice, but very enthusiastic.
If you're not up for a super long song though, I recommend Solitude by Valhalore. They're an Australian metal band that does a lot of heavy stuff, but Solitude is an a mostly acoustic piece with a gorgeous vocal duet. One of my favorite romantic songs ever, very heartfelt, and divinely beautiful in its clean simplicity.

This song reminds of MANY bible verses, and it was written 50 years ago!.,, GOD KNEW HIS Word would always reach all generations..,, But , no one is listening to HIM!!!.., ITS ABOUT THE WORDS>>>WORDS, NOT THE MUSIC>>>>>I learned these very words over 50 years ago and they are straight from the WORD of GOD!.., This is NOT about the music, it is about our changes of common sense thinking for decades now, people have changed and not for the better.., Discipline is coming soon for our disobedience to God and HIS plan and how many have made up their own Neon Gods to replace the TRUE GOD.,, Our SILENCE against the LORD is LOUD AND CLEAR, the LORD will not tolerate out Arrogance much longer!!!.,, The LORD gives us SIGNS, EVERY SINGLE DAY, but what do we do, WE stay SLIENT, instead of SHOUTING from the mountain top, to CEASE from our EVILS!.,, WE IGNORE HIM!!!.., LOOK at how the Gov. has separated our country, we NO LONGER communicate, face to face, we no longer share the WORD or the music of the LORD in our schools and campuses.,, These are all now against the law says the Gov..., So why do we NOW follow the plan of Satan and give our GOD GIVEN RIGHTS to the criminals of CHRIST??

This was originally written in the 1960s by Simon and Garfunkel. But they performed it as an acoustic folk song
They did not perform it like David from Disturbed did. He gave life to the song. Their version was so popular that others like Pentatonix copied Disturb's version.

When Paul Simon wrote this song, he did it as a warning to people to not be distracted into silence by Technology around them, and to listen to other people, he could see a future in which people did not speak, or hear each other, when he and Art Garfunkel sang the song, they did so with the voices of an angel, almost 60 years later, David Draiman, sang the song with the Voice of Avenging Angel full of anger that people had not headed the message!
Paul Simon tweeted that this song now belongs to David and he should take it forward so that people listen to the warning!

In the world of music, there are songs of this genre and songs of that genre----and then there are religious experiences. This work evokes images of prophets of old who, as voices in the wilderness, warn the people that they have lost their connection to their Creator and to each other---that they've replaced the divine with their own "neon god." Those prophets were loners, set apart from the greater social mileu. How fitting, then, that we would find those prophets' words from our modern perspective "written on the subway walls---tenement halls." If the Bible were put together in the modern era rather than in antiquity, and if it contained not just words and verses, but also singing and instrumental accompaniment, this work could have a place in the Book of Lamentations (Old Testament.)

Dave's voice is incredible, but the original is by Simon & Garfunkel, recorded before anyone in Pentatonix was alive & when Dave & the rest of disturbed were either unborn or very young children. You should def listen to more Disturbed, but find the original by Simon & Garfunkel, as well as some of their other music.

THE WARNING The first stanza Simon refers to darkness as being his "old friend" that he came to talk with because he was awoken in the middle of the night, of a nightmare that still lingers in his head, that gives his a considerable amount of distress. So bad that the awful visions were still flashing before his eyes as he is awake.
Second stanza begins setting the scene in which the dream took place: at night, him walking along the cobblestone road where he stops below the light of a streetlight. The cold chill runs up his back, so he lifts his collar to the "cold and damp." Just then, a blight neon sign lit up, showing that he, in fact, was not alone. But there were "ten thousand maybe more" all gathered in the cold night. The people who are talking, not speaking, are politicians, who are using false words to sway the population to vote for them, never revealing true intentions. The people therefore are hearing are not listening.
They are taking these words that are spoken to them in plain value, not examining or putting into depth anything that is said. Because of this, as referred to later, these politicians have formed a government that the people in fact voted for and supported until it began to act as a dictatorship. This seems that Simon is making an inditement to a large government that has taken away the freedoms of its people. A future for America it seemed with the rise of government in world affairs as in entered Vietnam. This "future America" has given Americans everything, and has the power the take it all away, hence the people "bow and pray to the neon god they made."
The Silence that is referred to is the silence of the people, afraid to say anything against the government for fear of death or worse. Simon, or whoever has had this dream, tries to bring people to speak out. Saying "Fools, you do not know, Silence like a cancer grows" that as more are afraid to speak, the more control the government takes and the less anyone will stand up to the new government.
As all hope is about to be given up, someone steps up and says to the crowd that the future they will hold has been written on the walls of subways and tenement halls. This is because this form of protest can be done anonymously, therefore no one can get in trouble for it. This begins the whispering in the silence of the people, and starts the beginning of a revolt.

I can just have this song on repeat and listen over and over and not get sick of it, your reaction is the first I've seen that I feel matches mine for this song

He had the flu when this was performed. He is very much a "the show must go on" type of person.

If you want to hear a beautiful, rich, powerful voice, listen/watch the Nightwish song "Ghost Love Score". It's from their Wacken 2013 live concert. You will enjoy Floor Jansen's vocals.
