Yes, Dolly did write this as a good-bye to her musical partner of 7 years, Porter Wagoner. Big ugly mess and she ended up calling him a male chauvinist pig, but that didn't mean she wasn't sad about their split. And apparently she took the royalties she received from Whitney's version and bought a strip mall in a predominantly Black neighborhood in Nashville to make her offices there in honor of Whitney, bringing people together. She calls it, "The house that Whitney built." We must protect this woman at all costs!

Hi Britt. Dolly not only wrote this , the guy she wrote it to and for was standing just a few feet from her during this performance. When Dolly was getting her start she was hired by Porter Wagoner to be the girl singer on his TV show. She said she would stay for a couple years and then go off to begin her solo career. They had big hits together doing duets and the popularity of the show grew larger after she joined it. Several years later she told him she was leaving as she had said and he did not take it well. He said some very unkind things to and about Dolly. She wrote this as a goodbye and performed it for him. Years later Porter fell on hard financial times and had to sell his book of music and songs. Dolly bought them so he would get a good and fair price and then gifted it all back to him. He apologized and they became friends again. Years after that when Porter was ill and dying, Dolly went to the hospital often and sang for him and his family. She is the sweetest woman and has done so much for so many. She has also had an amazing acting career. To date (she is still writing) Dolly has written over 4 thousand songs. Great job as always Britt.

She crossed over from the countyr charts to the pop charts many times with her great story telling. Dolly is also a great actress. In her movie "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" this song rose to the top of the charts for the 2nd time in 1982 long before Whitney's version. FYI, to clarify others’ remarks here. Porter Wagoner was a huge country star whose TV show ran from 1960 till 1980. In ’67, he hired teenage Dolly as a regular. Dolly became popular from that show and when her 5 year contract ran out, she opted to leave and go out on her own. From what I recall reading, she wrote this song as a goodbye to him. You’ve picked a much later and weaker version of this classic. In its original, it stands up very well against Whitney’s later cover.

An even earlier song Dolly wrote is "Don't Let It Trouble Your Mind" [not quite as sweet as this one, but with incredibly smart lyrics]. It's also fun to hear Rhiannon Giddens' sassy version of it.

Whitney sang the words, but Dolly FELT the words when she sang them. That was the biggest difference.
Nobody does it better than Dolly! She may look & act like a "blonde bimbo" but behind that persona is a very savvy & intelligent business woman.
She is also very kind & giving. I have never heard of anyone say anything bad about her.

Dolly wrote this for Porter Wagnor when she had decided to leave his VERY popular country variety show. They had a huge fight and she left and wrote this for him. Next day she said “Porter, sit your ass down and just listen. She sang this to him and he cried and told her “ i guess you gotta do what you gotta do.” And Porter let her go!!!!! Dolly loved all the checks she got after Whitney recorded her little song. She also said give Whitney all the credit and I’ll take the cash😂😂😂 she is the best!!!!

Dolly has never sold any of her music, kept the rights to all of it. Smart woman. She loves Whitney's version of this song and said she was driving by herself when she heard it and had to pull over, she was brought to tears. When Whitney won the Grammy for her performance of this, Dolly was the presenter along with David Foster (who was the arranger on the recording).

There is a clip around (best one, I think) where Porter Wagoner first introduces her (the star that made his show) and at the end, makes the remark "It sounded like you meant that." She wrote that song to him, as her contract was up and she was leaving to become a super star. Messy. And when he was in financial trouble, Dolly bailed him out. She is one very, very special lady.

  • @andrewanderson7683

If someone hasn't said so, Dolly is also the writer of the song. She wrote it as a farewell to her former business partner and mentor of seven years, Porter Wagoner, who by the way had never heard the song and was standing only a few feet away. He wasn't too happy with the fact that she was leaving his show and sued her for breach of contract. They settled out of court and all Dolly had to say was that "It took me a while to pay it off, but he got the first million dollars I ever made."
