The man was Johnny Cash and I would describe it as one music legend in awe of another music legend.

Patsy was Crazy for loving the man, Tammy was Stand By Your Man, Dolly was Jolene please don't take my man, and Loretta sang You Ain't Woman Enough to Take My Man, Fist City and Don't Come A Drinkin With Lovin on Your Mind!

In an interview about this song, Tammy said it was not about letting yourself be a victim of your man's abuse or bad behavior but about unconditional love for your spouse. Sticking by him thru good times and bad times.

  • @MrPaulMorris

You mention how this song might be viewed through the contemporary lens of female empowerment but the lyrics put the woman very much in the driving seat of the relationship; she provides the 'two arms to cling to" while he is "just a man". Stand by your man, not just because of love but because he needs the strength of that support. As 'just a man' who has been steadfastly supported by my wife through some of the darkest times I can certainly appreciate that sentiment.
After that moment of over-sharing... what makes Tammy's performance so incredible is not just the technical merit of her clear toned and strong vocal production but the emotion she imbues in the lyrics. These are not just words off a sheet but feelings poured straight from the heart. Not many singers in any genre can do that.

I don’t know what Tammy had, but I want some of that. Even her ex tried to clean up and start singing with her again, he moved next door and referred to her husband as his husband-in-law. George Jones’ song “he stopped loving her today” always makes me think of her.

Tammy was absolutely phenomenol!!! She had such a powerhouse voice! She had a hot and heavy love affair that lasted in and out of her marriage to George Jones. She never stopped loving him and he loved her likewise! She had a list of #1 hits as long as my leg! She was born in Prentiss County, Mississippi and had a very hard life until she made a career in Country Music! She, like ELVIS, has a rabbit hole that you really should delve into. Her life reads like a novel. Please research her! "Apartment #9" is also a really good song and so is "D-I-V-O-R-C-E"! Well, actually Tammy did not have a bad song! Everything she sang was spectacular!!! She was inducted into many Hall of Fames and received many accolades and awards! She received the "LIVING LEGEND" Country Music Award, also! She was known as the "First Lady of Country Music" until the day she died! She is very missed by her fans, friends, and family. Thank you for your great reaction! Like I said recently, you are very quickly becoming my favorite reactor!

Her expression, that cracking voice, those glassy eyes on the verge of tearing up. A stunning performance. I'm not entirely sure a woman should stand by a man that's done the things her ex did (Multiple infidelities, or "hard to understand" as she puts it). Any man would be blessed beyond belief to have a woman like this and I think this woman would be appreciated more now than ever.

I just learnt that this was a hit in 1968 in the States. I'm from the Netherlands and over here it wasn't a hit until 1975. And her follow-up hit over here was D.I.V.O.R.C.E. I guess standing by your man isn't enough after all. And her 3rd hit early 1976 over here (1967 in The US) was I don't wanna play house.

I was born in the 60s, a kid/teen in the 70s and at the time I hated my parent's old school Country that they listened to - like Tammy Wynette. As the years have gone by I come to appreciate it more and more and really enjoy it now. Something else too - those classic Country artists were so appreciative of their fans and gracious and humble on stage. Its something you don't really see as much anymore.

Different time, different standards. That “flirty” business was common and not taken seriously. A lot of the old country songs reflect an attitude about the “place” of women that we question today. I just enjoy it for what it was. And I love your analysis of the message.

    So much l could tell you. First, in Country Music the female singers who opened the door for other females;
    1 Kitty Wells
    2 Patsy Cline
    3 Loretta Lynn
    4 Dolly Parton
    5 Tammy Wynette
Before these Ladies a female singer was just a girl singer who also sang backup for the headliner(always a guy). They opened the door & burned it. I know 4 of the 5 were songwriters. As far as know know, Patsy Cline never wrote a song. As you are discovering these Ladies CAN SING!!!
And all have a long list of great songs. You need to do more from them. They will never let you down!
Loretta, Dolly & Tammy also did duets.
    Loretta/Conway Twitty,
    Dolly Parton/ Porter Wagoner,
Tammy/George Jones. Yes, they were married & after divorcing you could still tell that they loved each other.
You should have a special day & do just these Ladies. You could call it "the Fabulous Five"😁😂😂 That would be fun.
Many have commented on Tammy. So, l won't say to much more. But l read/saw Tammy say it only took her about 10-15 minutes to write Stand by your man. Tammy has some great songs. Tammy didn't have a easy life. You can hear & feel the pain in her voice when she sings. Listen to
    "I don't wanna play house"
    "D-I-V-O-R-C-E"
    "Kids Say the Darndest Things"
"Til l can make it on my own"
    "Apartmet #9"
"Your good girls gonna go bad"
That's just a few. Just like the other Ladies l have mentioned, the list is long. With Loretta Lynn now in Heaven(l miss her so much)Dolly Parton is now the only one still with us. Not looking forward to the day the Lord calls her home! But thank goodness we have all the 🎵 they left us. Have a BLESSED day.

Thank you so much. Tammy is one of my favorites. I grew up with her music and she helped to teach me how to be a woman and how to treat my man. My Mom had a beautiful voice and I can remember her going around the house singing Tammy's song, "I Don't Wanna Play House".

Tammy was a trail blazer. A women providing a woman’s point of view in a man’s world. Sounds sort of not-so-feminist but really this song speaks to female empowerment… after all he’s just a man. But hey, love is love.

Also a comment on the institution of marriage. There will be bumps in the road, and it takes work to maintain that sacred commitment.

This song caused a huge controversy when Hillary Clinton said she was not a stand by your man kind of woman. I don’t remember the exact quote but you’re absolutely correct that nowadays that song doesn’t play well even though it’s a country music classic.

Johnny Cash had a TV show from back before my time. However, from the clips I've seen it must have been a great show. As others have mentioned this is one of the legends of country music. I actually got to see her in concert back in 79 or 80. A great performer. Great reaction.

Hi! You should check out Golden Rings, Your good girls gonna go bad, Divorce. Tammy was married to George Jones and even though they divorced they still loved each other. There is a series on showtime about their life!

Johnny Cash only had eyes for his soul mate June Carter Cash. Tammy was a close friend of theirs. My favorite song of hers is D.I. V.O.R.C.E.

Try Tammy singing Another Chance. Notice she also sings through her teeth, like George Jones and then know that they sang that way together...quite well.

Johnny Cash was never in love with Tammy Wynette. By the time this show was taped, Johnny was head over hills for June Carter who was the love of his life and was with her to the day she died. Johnny loved Tammy's music but that's all. Also, at this time, Tammy was probably already in love with George Jones and she married George a year after "Stand By Your Man" was recorded.
Back when Bill Clinton was president, he was involved in an affair with a young woman who was an intern at the White House. He initially denied this and while he was in denial someone asked Hillary about her reaction to his alleged affair and she rather snippily said that she was no Tammy Wynette who would "stand by my man" no matter what he did and if he really was involved with Monica, that would be the end of their marriage. Bill later admitted that he had relations with "that woman" (that's the way he put it) and of course his party forgave him, and Hillary must have forgiven him also because despite what she had said, she didn't leave him and in fact they are still together today, sort of. A lot of country fans and particularly fans of Tammy Wynette couldn't quite figure out why Hillary felt the need to drag Tammy's song into her rant about her husband, in fact we still haven't figured that out, particularly since it was not true because even when Bill admitted his affair, Hillary did exactly that...she stood by her man. I don't guess she ever apologized to Tammy for the more than a little sarcastic way she talked about this song which was one of Tammy's biggest hits.
BTW, for future reference, Tammy's last name is pronounced Y-Net not Win-net. But however you pronounced it, thank you for reacting to this great song by Tammy.
