Story has been told that when Whitney found out she was to perform this song, she reached out to Dolly, and asked for her blessing to record the song. Dolly agreed and told her it would be an honor to have one of the most gifted singers to record her song. After it was recorded and fine tuned, it sent to Dolly, and played for her. It was reported that Whitney's rendition had Dolly in tears. Dolly supposedly said the raw emotion and power Whitney put into the song, would forever be one for the ages, and her new favorite song. Dolly did not want any royalties from the Whitney version, only writing credit, and nothing more. The movie studio and her label insisted she be paid. She agreed but with stipulations that it is donated to a charity/cause of her choosing and any royalty checks go to inner city programs in Nashville. She also has some of the money go into her fund that she uses to help less fortunate people. Dolly is truly an amazing performer and human being. A true living legend

Unfortunately most of the rumors are unsubstantiated by Dolly. She made over 10 million and used some to invest in an office complex/strip mall in a black community in Nashville. She knew the song was going to be recorded and first heard it driving in Nashville. Doesn't lesson how good of a person she is but her exact comments about the song " let people think it's a Whitney song as long as I get the cash "

    • @Caprizonica
      @Caprizonica 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

I highly doubt that because the reason Dolly didn't want to give Elvis this song is because she knew it was a money maker. She then have it to Linda Ronstadt because they were friends and she liked her singing. A writing credit of course gives her money, that's the importance of being credited.

@@MrNegative57 Decided to correct you since you seem to want to correct everybody incorrectly. She made millions off her own recording of this song, so she didnt need the royalties from Whitney's version. In fact most of her money came from her recording of this song, Jolene, and her duets with Kenny Rogers. Well before Whitney. She built far more than a complex. She funded the book and reading program for under privileged children, and an afterschool program for at risk children. She also funded the remodeling of the shimmies on the outskirts of Nashville. The reading and book and after school program is not just in Nashville. It's nation wide. Her fund still supports those programs nation wide. The measly 10 million from Whitney's version doesnt dent the amount Dolly has contributed. Dolly never "almost ran off the road" listening to Whitney sing this, and Dilly never said that. She rejected the first 2 Whitney versions, stating you can do better than this to Whitney, and approved the 3rd version which she listened to at her own studio. She loved Whitney's 3rd version.

Dolly wrote this song as a tribute to Porter Wagoner. He helped jump start her music career by allowing her to co-host on his show, The Porter Wagoner Show in the 70s. She cut ties with him to sail away on into a fantastic and beautiful solo career. Dolly is truly a national treasure. Her voice is one of a kind, her song writing ability and her music can't be matched. She stays true to herself and her roots. Gives more than she takes. As always with Dolly it isn't just the song, it's the story behind the song. Saying goodbye to the man who gave her a chance in the business, and as always she was gracious when others wanted to sing her songs. One of my childhood best friends moved to Tennessee and works at DollyWood. She says Ms. Dolly is the soul of graciousness and has on multiple occasions (natural disasters, Covid, etc.) when they were unable to open the park the employees get paid anyway. She has worked for DollyWood for more than a decade now... she and her husband. When her hubby had a massive coronary infarction they didn't have to worry about his pay or their insurance... Ms. Dolly organized fundraising for anything that wasn't covered and paid them both their salaries until my friend could return to work. She went back to her old job but hubby couldn't, so Ms. Dolly got him a job doing light office work until he was able to get disability benefits. She is the epitome of generosity and class. She reminds us how Christians are supposed to behave.

@@doreenkaypierce Dolly Parton debunks tale of writing ‘Jolene,’ ‘I Will Always Love You’ on same day BY MIKE STUNSON MARCH 04, 2022 10:13 AM
For years, Dolly Parton fans have believed two of the singer’s biggest songs - “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You” - were written on the same day. But in a recent interview on the social audio app clubhouse, the iconic singer revealed that isn’t necessarily true.
Asked about her creative process behind writing the two hit songs, Parton gave a new answer to the long-standing tale.
“Well I don’t really know if they were written in the same night,” the 76-year-old singer said in conversation with TED speaker Adam Grant. “When we found an old tape, they were on the same cassette. That could have been a few days apart.” “But they also wound up on the same album. They were certainly written within a very short span of time,” she added.

And of course Whitney's when the movie came out was absolutely everywhere, and I could mindlessly sing along to myself...
But when I listened to this by sheer chance and time this morning I was suddenly fully aware of the lyrics as tears welled up in my eyes, and I realized what was truly being sung and what that meant to ME.
I had to wipe my whole face after and play back the video to listen to the reaction itself after I recovered my thoughts.

She donates to the underprivileged in her Hometown around the areas of Tennessee and Pigeon Forge, TN where she has her theme park and waterpark, in general, which is by far amazing. I strongly suggest even if you are not a fan of country music go to the theme and water parks they are amazing. I want to call it top-tier-level great. She even moved her original house to the theme park. It is nothing more than a little shack no bigger than a small one-bedroom apartment. To see how she grew up to become the woman that she is when I say she grew up with nothing it's the truth.

Her music means a lot to me but there's no way I would remember the first time I listened to her, so seeing other people experience it for the first time is such a treat. Unrelated, I saw an interview once where Dolly joked that she didn't care if Whitney Houston got the credit for the song as long as she got the cash. She's not only classy, kind, generous, talented, and lovely, she's funny too.

I love that Dolly wouldn't give up any publishing rights to Elvis. Elvis Presley wanted to record "I Will Always Love You." The story is that Elvis showed interest in recording the song, but his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, wanted a share of the publishing rights, which Dolly Parton didn't agree to. As a result, the collaboration didn't happen.

I wondered why I felt like I knew the song the first time I heard Whitney singing it then I remembered that this was a song that Dolly had written years earlier. Whitney Houston sang this song in the movie Bodyguard in which she starred. Kevin Costner (producer and male lead in the film) had picked another song for Whitney to sing but as it turned out, that particular song was already being used in a movie that year so since he had always really loved this Dolly song, he decided this would be the song that Whitney would sing in the movie. Whitney didn't want to sing a "country" song because she said it was not a genre that worked with her voice. Costner said he would help her make the song her own (he is also a singer/songwriter) and this song saved Whitney's slumping career and became her number 1 best selling song of all time. I love this version of this song and I also love Whitney's. Dolly wrote this song to her singing partner who she was leaving because she wanted to take her career in a different direction. She loved that man but it was just time for a change and a solo career. BTW Dolly wears wigs. I love the movie Bodyguard but when it came out, critics didn't like it and didn't like Costner or Houston's performances. More Dolly trivia...she is Miley Cyrus' Godmother.

He was bitter and sued her but years later when he ran into tough times, Dolly bought rights to a lot of his songs he was selling to live on. Dolly sang on the Porter Wagoner show for 7 years, then decided to go out on her own. She told him she was leaving and he didn't want her to go. They argued for weeks until she finally gave up, went home, wrote the song, then sang it to him on the next show, which was her last. It reached #1 on the charts in 1974. In 1982 she sang it in the movie "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" and it reached #1 again. In 1992 Whitney Houston sang it and it reached #1 a third time. She's written some tragic songs that are real tear jerkers. "Me & Little Andy" is one of those. See it here: th-cam.com/video/xRriGGC68A8/w-d-xo.html . "Down From Dover" and "The Bridge" are two others.

Dolly wrote this song about leaving Porter Wagoner's show and leaving as his singing partner. Dolly thought a lot of Porter (from West Plains, MO), but had to break her contract to leave and go out on her own as a solo act. Dolly offered this song to Elvis Presley, but Presley's manager Colonel Parker insisted on Dolly giving co-writer rights to Elvis. Dolly refused, and recorded it herself. It was a huge hit for Dolly.

Vocal forward groups like Steve Miller Band, David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, Steely Dan and Heart all released albums that year, and greats like Barry White and Marvin Gaye were in the charts.

I'm 53, I have loved listening to Dolly my entire life. She came from dirt poor but loving family to being 1 of the greatest of all time & still is humble & kind.
