    I still think StartAllBack is the way to go. It does these and much more, including theming old modals and panels with a modern dark mode and better animations.
    Yes it's paid, but it's one time fee. Also ExplorerPatcher requires constant updates due to its nature and broke on me several times.

OpenShell is the ClassicShell and opensource version (i think) Startisback is not... Both do the job well i think and i still think OpenShell is pretty good ... Im using Startisback just for the lolz to see how it is... the free version which has a smily face... but anyay since 3 months now and its okay ...

    I was seriously thinking about using something like this since I just built a new PC using a 14 gen CPU. I would have stayed on win 10 but that damn scheduler forced my hand. Now like you said and it's something I thought about, if there's a win update and it breaks something I really don't want to spend the time fixing things. I'm a set it and forget it kind of ass hat. As I was setting up win 11 I really didn't get lost. Yeah, it's a different way of going about things and typing all the crap out to find what you're looking for is annoying but once I learn it, I think I'll be ok. I actually preferred the Windows Vista file Explorer to Windows 7's. The bottom preview pane and original introduction of Libraries was honestly really good on Vista.
    Windows 7 backpedaled on libraries a bit, (they're still usable even on 11, but you need to enable and configure it), and 7 moved some stuff around from Vista.
    While 7's taskbar was better than Vista, Vista's explorer was just fantastic.

    The thing that I seriously hate about using Explorerpatcher is that sometimes you get hit with a really bad update and your entire screen is black and explorer.exe never shows up. So frustrating to deal with. Gotta uninstall EP or the update and just troubleshooting it was a pain in general. I'm just gonna stick with auto hiding my taskbar. That was basically my problem so far with W11 since I couldn't have small taskbar.

      I cover that at the end of the video. I have it on 5 PCs and it's happened once. It's a very quick fix. Just press ctrl shift esc to bring up the task manager. Run new task. Type "explorer" ... that's it! If that doesn't work, do the same thing but type "control" into the run new task field. That opens control panel where you can uninstall ExplorerPatcher, then start explorer... then go download and update ExplorerPatcher.

    I used to be a windows user for decades, but switched to MacOS a year ago. I was that guy customizing his desktop with rainmeter, customizing windows with PowerToys, that guy in insider program while I had no interest into that, just to experiment things quicker.
    I'm happier on MacOS, I feel really productive and less focused on making things more practical. I don't spend time anymore on customizing my computer, I miss that a lot but I'm really more productive. I don't have access to the majority of the games available on windows, but everything is smooth, snappy and stable.
    I'm really happy to see what Windows becomes since Windows 11, even though I'm not on the boat anymore. I'm a developer, I wish I could dualboot windows on my mac, Windows never felt that "MacOS-ish" than right now.

      @@mopeyblokeMint is great for beginners, but it's running some older stuff for the sake of ease of use and stability. It's usually not a problem, unless you wanna do stuff like use two monitors with different refresh rates or use g-sync / freesync. If Mint handled all of that well it'd be an unambiguous recommendation, but it looks like it will take until 2025 at the earliest for it to get there.
      If you're a bit of a power user who's not afraid of the command line and are willing to read instructions and / or talk to people to get help, you might consider Nobara Linux instead. Comes with a lot of patches to make gaming and peripherals work well right off the bat, and is run by effectively *the* guy who's at the forefront of making games run well on Linux.

    Thanks for the video.
    I fixed all but one of my Windows 10/11 problems, I installed Linux Mint Cinnamon, so far all games that have been installed work great, 2077 even gets more fps on Mint.
    The only problem to solve is modding Skyrim and Fallout NV using Heroic Games Launcher.

    • @psiah9889
      @psiah9889 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The trick there is that each thing installed in heroic has its own wine (proton) prefix(fake windows install), usually in a place like ~/Games/Heroic/Prefixes/. You need to run the modding tools within the same prefix as the game. I think Heroic has an option in the game's advanced settings to run programs within its prefix. If not, you can run in specific prefixes from command line, but there's a reason I use protontricks to launch them for steam games.
      The other issue you might have is some mods might rely on dll injection. For instance, all the mods for Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun that fix the graphics so it'll run on modern hardware require overriding ddraw.dll. On windows, this is as simple as dropping it in the game folder, but with wine/proton, you have to tell it *not* to use the wine version of ddraw.dll, which is in the wine configuration for the prefix.

    I like the start menu in the middle to avoid burn-in. As the number of icons grows and shrinks, they all change position. Less static position == less monitor burn in.

    I've used explorer patcher for a few years but had to stop using is because when it crashes it deletes all of my application shortcuts from the taskbar. The most important thing is the win10 taskbar that can be put vertically - if you have 2 monitor setup it's just so convenient to have the tasbar on the side "between" your screens. They removed the ability to do this for no reason in win11

    It's funny how you say 'fix' for things that are 'not broken' just because they're different from before. I agree that there should be a settings page somewhere to easily change it back in Windows itself, but anyway...
    I tried the new things with Windows 11 over a year ago and found they're really not bad. I've been using my PC without any hassle since then, without any modifications. Well, that's not entirely true; I did put the Start menu where it belongs using the settings in Windows for that-no need to use third-party software.
    If Microsoft never changes anything in Windows, people say Windows is a sh#t OS, and they're moving to Linux or buying a Mac. Then when Microsoft makes a few changes, the same people say Windows is a sh#t OS, and they're moving to Linux or buying a Mac. Go figure. I guess people are hard to please.
    But nice video, easy to follow and you show what every change you making is doing in Windows.

    Curious how this would be beneficial on 2016 Server/Core. I'm one of those guys that stuck to 2003/2008/2012/2016 until Win10 because I didn't want Vista, didn't like nor could navigate 7, needed to avoid the consumer bloat of 8/8.1 and am kind of okay with 10 now that it's a bit more stable. I'm not a fan of Win11 and will probably need this if I hop to 2022 since it's probably going to be the only tool that addresses the nasty Explorer memory leaks.

    I'm curious if you'll ever try a Linux desktop and document it on your chanel, I feel that it aligns well with your philosophy. Customization, usability, long term support, open source with little to no corpo bs, heck if you have a decent rig you can just run most games on steam these days on linux (through proton) and most emulators (specially retroarch) just work natively on linux.

    If all you want is the context menu changed, there's a Registry tweak for that. Also, they don't have a Windows 7 style for the Start Menu. That was that last version of Windows that had a good Start Menu design.

    • @teksyndicate
      @teksyndicate  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I prefer to avoid registry tweaks when possible... they are more difficult to fix after updates than this is. As for the start menu... we always have openshell to give us that Windows 7 style still.

    This is a really cool tool, and I'm glad it exists for those who want it. However, almost nothing in this video changed anything about Windows that changed it so fundamentally that it could be seen as "unusable" before. The normal System menu shows all the same information that the old one does for example, it's just preference. This is more about how older users of Windows want to go back to the old days. There's nothing wrong with that, and I guess in a way that's what "usable" means to some people. However, it sort of also implies that W11 or 10 are somehow fundamentally broken in some way that this fixes which isn't really the case here. It's an interesting piece of software nonetheless.

    Wouldn't it be nice if the ExplorerPatcher had a button for setting all configuration switches to the "Windows 10" style setting? So anyone upgrading from Win 10 to 11 would instantly get a desktop that looks as much as the old one as possible, without having to change dozens of settings manually.

    Here's a good program: AltDrag
    No need to aim for the tiny bar at the top anymore, or the tiny edges to resize. Just hold alt, then use mb1 on anywhere in your window then drag it around, and then use mb2 anywhere on the window to resize it.
