The peak of music in FF was VII through IX. I’ll accept any argument for them being the best soundtracks. I personally loved IX, but the music for VIII carried that game.
Would just like to point out that the NES didn't use FM Synthesis. Except for one japan-only game that had an on-board FM Synthesis chip. Also plus points for FF8 being so high, minus points for FF5 being so low.
This is a cool video and all, but you can yourself a final fantasy 6 fan, but i see you not using suplex on the train? (8:56) 0/10 video (good rankings tho)
If I had to rank the boss theme (no remixes) : 1 - Force Your Way - FFVIII (who else really ? Also I might add the Black Mages remix is incredible) 2 - Fight On - FFVII 3 - Saber's Edge - FFXIII 4 - The Decisive Battle - FFVI 5 - Boss Battle - FFXII 6 - Boss Battle - FFIV 7 - Batte 2 - FFIII 8 - Ennemy Attack - FFX 9 - Battle 2 - FFV 10 - Battle 2 - FFIX (as much as it pains me, love the game one of my top 3 FF games, but I really don't like the boss theme)
Good list! Funny though that scorpion is the thumbnail, even though it doesn't use the boss theme, it plays the bombing mission theme! You don't hear Fight On until Airbuster. Fitting that it got the biggest remix of the song in FF7R.
What’s interesting about VII through X, is that the boss themes for VII and VIII just slap so god damn hard, but then as you mentioned IX and X went with a more tension vibe than the hype train. But on the flip side, the regular battle tracks for IX and X are some of the most fun and almost felt like boss themes.
I loved watching this because, as I went on, it became more and more apparent that you were going to rank them in nearly the exact order I would. Wow, we must have pretty similar tastes in these. Definitely agree with your #1,2 and 3 slots in that order. I also like that you articulate some things about these tracks that I hadn't before. I never had really thought about how I strongly prefer the FF4 boss theme over the FF6 one, but come to think of it, I do. And like you said, the shortness of the FF6 track is an issue...it's a great song but it ends up getting too repetitive, especially in a game that is one of the longest, most complex games (and has some very long boss battles.) Same for FF5, very underwhelming especially relative to the complexity of that game's gameplay and world, it just didn't seem fitting. I also conspicuously noticed the way FF1 and 2 lack boss themes and FF3 has the first one. I haven't formed impressions of the boss themes from FF10 onward because I have yet to play those games; I've heard the themes, but I don't think I can really form an opinion until I play a game because a good boss theme is one that you aren't sick of after playing the whole game. (This is where FF6 and FF5 falter but FF4, 7, and 8 still go strong, and I would say 9 too.)
I agree with top 4, with FF7 and FF8's being interchangeable depending on the day. I'd have put 5 and 9 higher though 15...12...10,(6,9,3,5),13, 4, (7, 8). 5 and 9 are quite simple but effective I think I like the drums and bass in both, 3 and 6 have a better emphasis on melody.
If you really want to hear the best boss music themes you need to listen to Mystic Quest, which is an easy mode spinoff of the series, but still made by square and most importantly it prooves that other composers than Nobuo Uematsu can also make really great music, in particular all the battle themes blow most FFs mainline battle and boss themes out of the water, while the game is of course made for 3 years old, the music artist really did the best job in that game.
This video is full of fantastic music criticism. Your reasoning is very persuasive, and I fully agree with the top 4. I would rank FFVI and FFIII somewhat lower because the track length means the songs are somewhat underdeveloped, though I still enjoy them
I think I've seen the FF7 boss theme called at least 3 different titles so far.. Fight On as latest, but then Those Who Fight Further, and Still More Fighting. Same meaning of course in all cases, just an 'oh right!' moment.
FF 12 has almost nothing memorable, but the music is. Themes like Dalmasca Easternsand, Giza Plains, Rabanastre Lowtown, Royal Capital Rabanastre- City Upper Ground, The Salikawood and I could go on. FF 12 has some of the best environmental themes of any Final Fantasy. You maybe should consider doing a list on that. Great video and list otherwise, well explained reasoning behind every choice, I respect that.
Ah yes, the classic track my family always discusses over Thanksgiving: 'Royal Capital Rabanastre - City Upper Ground'. The name really rolls off the tongue. Have you heard the B-side of that track titled *'Rabanastre City Guardsman's Sense of Duty and Pride - Betrayed by Spouse but Saved by Offspring, Township Lower Courtyard (Across from Old Town's Bank)'* ? I literally can't stop shouting the name from the rooftops! Of course, though, since it takes so long for me to get through the title, I can only shout it twice per day.
Only good Songs in XII are Flash of Steel, Giza Plains, Ozmone Plains, The Main Theme, Battle with an Esper and Battle on the Big Bridge. And two of them arent even originally from this game
14:31 Okay, we going to just ignore that they are fighting a house? Also, assuming this this falls under your rules, which I think it does, how can you ignore Jenova's Theme? That's the best one! (None final boss them, I mean)
As much as I love FF8's, I think I'd put Saber's Edge or Omnis Lacrima (FFXV) for first. I'm such a sucker for epic, sweeping tracks. Anyway, great vid!
Agreed I would put FF8 in second place and sabers edge in first it’s so funny seeing him place FF4s theme right over it the decrease in quality is crazy not saying FF4 is theme bad but FFXIII has way better quality and theming Sabers edge sounds like a alien invasion is happening it’s so damn cool
Wow, we have very different taste lol. I was just somewhat shocked for FFV to be placed last and FFIX third from last because those are probably in my top 5. And while I don't think any of these themes are bad, I would have put FFVII and FFVIII closer towards the bottom. But, to each their own.
Totallly disagree with you on FFXII. IMHO FFXII is a top 3 boss theme especially the remastered version from the Zodiac Age version. The intro, the drum rolls, the crescendo and the symbol crashes and happy chords create a powerful harmony and it's one of the more epic themes in the entire series. The rest of your list was pretty good. FFIII is to high. Maybe it's because I'm not familiar with it but it's too primative.
The Goat is the final battle sequence music from the bottom of the statute (Doom) all the way to the top and fighting Kefka . That whole sequence of music is epic The other top ones are FF6, FF7, FF8, FF9 and Fiend battle final fantasy 4 and of course Atmos weapon
I disagree with your ranking, but I respect it. However, I do need to point out that FFXII was not the first in the series to have a "big orchestra feel." Uematsu used a live orchestra for FFVI and FFVIII was one of the first games to use a studio orchestra. And while not considered a "main line" game, Final Fantasy Tactics has an outstanding OST and uses alot of orchestral music.
I like how no matter how much FF fans compete and bicker over which game is best.., we *ALL* pretty much agree on FF8's music being kickASS. It's the one topic we all can seem to agree on.
Sabers Edge might be my favorite track in the series (other than Man with the Machine Gun but thats not a boss theme) and I think the 12 theme is way better than you placed it but otherwise solid list.
I definitely enjoy the way you think & your thought-process; although, I *absolutely* disagree w/ your #1 pick. It is a good track for sure, but generic at the same time. *to* *me* This is still a great video. ^__^ Please continue with more content like this. 👍
Force your way should be anyones 1st if not top 3 😂 My list is: 1. FF8 2. Ff13 3. FF12 (I agree with what you said but, God do i love that orchestra while in battles gets me so hype!) 4. FF7 4. FF16 boss battle theme 5. FF4 6. FF9 7. FF6 And then all the rest i dont feel any particula way
Hey everybody, this is a reupload due to the original video getting a copyright claim by Warner Chappel. Hopefully things are fixed now.
What was the song that was flagged, and what did you need to do to fix the issue so that this version wouldn't also get flagged? Thanks for your help!
I'm still curious, if you don't mind sharing - how did you get around the copyright claim issue?
One thing that can't be debated is that Nobuo Uematsu is a god damn genius
He is basicly the eastern version of Paul Romero, both musicans are masters when it comes to classical themes.
Finally... someone gave the well deserved spotlight to FF8 songs... good job buddy!
Final Fantasy 8 music number 1? My man, you earned my respect. FF8 music is legendary.
Ff7 is my fav game. Ff8 has basically all the best music lol
First I'd heard of it. A lot of people didn't like it the first time, FF7 had more exciting music, FF4-6 had all the legendary music.
The peak of music in FF was VII through IX.
I’ll accept any argument for them being the best soundtracks. I personally loved IX, but the music for VIII carried that game.
@@thatstheway2429 - you weren't 14 in 1994. FF6 for life.
I love Force Your Way. Good number 1 pick.
8:54 Sabin didn't suplex the train... Instant fail :(
13 and it’s soundtrack is fucking godly
The Decisive Battle is to me the absolute best boss theme, it is so fkn awesome.
Damn right. Gets me hyped!
Yes, agreed
So agreed with the ranking, no matter how many times I listen force your way, always send shivers through my back.
Great list!! Definitely agree with your picks
Final Fantasy 10 has a 2nd boss theme that comes along on different bosses throughout the game that you can call it regular - Challenge.
You know that you agree with this list when you find every song better than the last one
6 should have been #1.
Would just like to point out that the NES didn't use FM Synthesis.
Except for one japan-only game that had an on-board FM Synthesis chip.
Also plus points for FF8 being so high, minus points for FF5 being so low.
Exdeath themes in 5 and other themes fit the game so well . 4 had great music as well . 8 was a game so overlooked
*Sees title*
*clicks vid*
*skips to #1*
*Agrees*
*Subscribes*
Totally agree with the top 1, FF8 has the best boss theme, and in general the best songs of all final fantasy in majority
Seymour omnis for me is the one of the most epic pieces of music, especially the HD remaster it's chefs kiss
Just sharing my top 5
5 FF12
4 The Decisive Battle
3 Saber's Edge
2 Fight On
1 Force Your Way
This is a cool video and all, but you can yourself a final fantasy 6 fan, but i see you not using suplex on the train? (8:56) 0/10 video (good rankings tho)
If I had to rank the boss theme (no remixes) :

2 - Fight On - FFVII
3 - Saber's Edge - FFXIII
4 - The Decisive Battle - FFVI
5 - Boss Battle - FFXII
6 - Boss Battle - FFIV
7 - Batte 2 - FFIII
8 - Ennemy Attack - FFX
9 - Battle 2 - FFV
10 - Battle 2 - FFIX (as much as it pains me, love the game one of my top 3 FF games, but I really don't like the boss theme)
Final Fantasy never disappoints when it comes to music
Good list! Funny though that scorpion is the thumbnail, even though it doesn't use the boss theme, it plays the bombing mission theme! You don't hear Fight On until Airbuster. Fitting that it got the biggest remix of the song in FF7R.

FF6 is literally my favorite videogame OST of all time, so hearing you say you don't like it as much as some others hurt my soul XD
I loved watching this because, as I went on, it became more and more apparent that you were going to rank them in nearly the exact order I would. Wow, we must have pretty similar tastes in these. Honestly, I'd swap 9 and 10's positions
I agree with your list , but I also enjoy the Boss Theme of Final Fantasy IX a lot.
Good call on FF VIII... for me XIII ties with me for VIII as the best Boss Battle Theme music...
Fair point on the ff xxii boss theme. But rabanastre theme and the westersands theme is just pure nostalgia
FF22 is out already? Man it flew right over my head when 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21 were released
Nothing will ever beat hearing "OMNIS LACRIMA" for the first time...
My favorite has always been FFVI.
Before i watch im gonna say 6,7,8 are gonna be in the top 3. 6,8 and 7 respectfully
I agree bro
2, The Decisive Battle 1, Still More Fighting 👍
If you really want to hear the best boss music themes you need to listen to Mystic Quest, which is an easy mode spinoff of the series, but still made by square and most importantly it prooves that other composers than Nobuo Uematsu can also make really great music, in particular all the battle themes blow most FFs mainline battle and boss themes out of the water, while the game is of course made for 3 years old, the music artist really did the best job in that game.
VIII at number 1, a man of culture i see
I agree, so much with this list. Nearly the exact same placements even.
Whats your favorite final boss theme from the series, and why is it The Extreme?
That Heavy Rain video on TH-cam ruined #3 for me lol.
Here's my top 5 tho!
1.XIII
2.VIII
3.VII
4.IX
5.X
The one that sent chills was Atma Weapon in FF6.
14:57 YEAHHH FUCKING A
FF3's boss music really makes you realize how much of a genius Nobuo Uematsu is even within the absolutely crippling limitations of the Famicon.
I'mma be real, the boss theme is what kept me playing through FF8. The game itself wasn't my thing but damn did that boss theme stick.
IMO, FF7 has the best boss battle theme, followed by FF4.
Ff9 boss theme is criminally underrated
FF 12 has almost nothing memorable, but the music is. Themes like Dalmasca Easternsand, Giza Plains, Rabanastre Lowtown, Royal Capital Rabanastre- City Upper Ground, The Salikawood and I could go on. FF 12 has some of the best environmental themes of any Final Fantasy. You maybe should consider doing a list on that. Great video and list otherwise, well explained reasoning behind every choice, I respect that.
When it comes to environmental music, yes, 12 did do a good job. But it should have, since most of the game was centered around exploration.
My favorite track from XII is The Feywood. The unsettling music goes so well with the unsettling environment you're in.
Only good Songs in XII are Flash of Steel, Giza Plains, Ozmone Plains, The Main Theme, Battle with an Esper and Battle on the Big Bridge. And two of them arent even originally from this game
I don't think there's any such thing as a bad final fantasy track. The games might vary in quality but the music is pretty consistently great.
Jenova boss theme is my favorite one, then Decisive Battle and then FF4 boss theme.
14:31 Okay, we going to just ignore that they are fighting a house?
Also, assuming this this falls under your rules, which I think it does, how can you ignore Jenova's Theme? That's the best one! (None final boss them, I mean)
Honestly Seymours inside sins battle theme is better then enemy attacks but enemy attacks is still good just not my personal #1
Yeah but Seymour Omnis would be too much for normal Boss enemies. I Like the normal Boss theme. It really gives that feeling of a dangerous situation

The rest of your list was pretty good. FFIII is to high. Maybe it's because I'm not familiar with it but it's too primative.
If there was Final Boss Themes it would be a toss up between Kuja and Kefka’s theme for me
Can you do another one with ff16?
The Goat is the final battle sequence music from the bottom of the statute (Doom) all the way to the top and fighting Kefka . That whole sequence of music is epic
The other top ones are FF6, FF7, FF8, FF9 and Fiend battle final fantasy 4 and of course Atmos weapon
You need to make a soundtrack list and final boss and summons lists plz
I disagree with your ranking, but I respect it. However, I do need to point out that FFXII was not the first in the series to have a "big orchestra feel." Uematsu used a live orchestra for FFVI and FFVIII was one of the first games to use a studio orchestra. And while not considered a "main line" game, Final Fantasy Tactics has an outstanding OST and uses alot of orchestral music.
man ff has the best f soundtrack ever f made, omg
Final Fantasy VI #1
The whole ost I can understand but not the battle theme.
@@wiseguy240Winston yes.
Ff8 is the clear winner, no contest. But I would have put 4 ahead of 7.
easily
Yes.
FF9 is my favorite soundtrack overall except for the boss theme and ff8 is my favorite boss theme for sure and the first FF I played before the others
I like how no matter how much FF fans compete and bicker over which game is best.., we *ALL* pretty much agree on FF8's music being kickASS.
It's the one topic we all can seem to agree on.
I had a different feeling foer 15 it gave me the feeling I was facing a legendary beast I put it number 2 only beat by ff8
I correctly guessed the top three!
FF12 boss theme so low? You clearly didn't do the legendary optional bosses....Yiazmat gives you a 1-hour version of it.
FF6's boss music gets upstaged by The Fierce Battle.
I don't know FFIV's epic battle theme is probably the best, it gets your blood pumping for battle.
FFIV's boss theme is definitely the "gold standard" for this series.
Even Nobuo can have an off-day. Yes, I agree with your top 2. FF8 is confusing and dated, but the music is amazing.
I find it criminal that FF9 is so low in this list, I would swipe either 1 or even 2 positions above (yes, taking over FF15). I do like the top 3
Ff7 boss theme Man that is so cool and so iconic
I agree with the top 5
Sabers Edge might be my favorite track in the series (other than Man with the Machine Gun but thats not a boss theme) and I think the 12 theme is way better than you placed it but otherwise solid list.
i would go with one winged angel vs sephiroth vii
Love 8 but ff4 or ff7 should have won
talk about good taste. Last 3 were spot on
I definitely enjoy the way you think & your thought-process; although, I *absolutely* disagree w/ your #1 pick.
It is a good track for sure, but generic at the same time. *to* *me*
This is still a great video. ^__^
Please continue with more content like this. 👍
And that Dissidia remix, oh my God that Dissidia version
I'm amazed Force Your Way hasn't been butchered in a spinoff I know of
Where is Otherworld?? Whyyyyyy
Having now watched it I'd reverse the top 2, other than that I'm pretty happy with your list. Except the no Jenova obv.
same, the intro of the ff7 boss battle theme is just too good.
I hugely respect ur video and ur decisions but it must've been hard asf ranking them. 😂
VIII made it that high?
Who are you and what have you done with the real Virgil?
I feel FF7,8 Battle Theme better than Boss Theme. And If compare Boss Theme in (6,7,8), FF6 should be best of.
XV has some GREAT songs (Imperial boss, the god fight song, and the goddamn final boss all gave me chills) but omnis lacrima is just so mediocre imo
Agree with your whole list but I'd swap 7 and 8. I just like it a bit more.
Force your way should be anyones 1st if not top 3 😂
My list is:
1. FF8
2. Ff13
3. FF12 (I agree with what you said but, God do i love that orchestra while in battles gets me so hype!)
4. FF7 4. FF16 boss battle theme
5. FF4
6. FF9
7. FF6
And then all the rest i dont feel any particula way
Pissing a bit, 5 and 12 were damn good games with great music, but they went to the bottom bin haha.
the only downfaill of ff12 TZA was they butchered the boss theme,,, the trumpets imbetween the beats made this theme and they decided to remove them
What is so good about ff6? Only serious answers please. I've beat it multiple times and I still put it as one of my worst ff games.
Where is FF1 and FF2 boss theme?
He explained why at the beginning
Only here to see where FFXs boss theme is
Saber's Edge>Fight on>Force your way
6 should be higher. But 8 is best
ff8 rules my man !!!
I wouldve rank Ffxii Boss Theme higher
Nice list, for me personally it’s
11 FF12 - Boss Battle
10 FF5 - Battle 2
9 FF3 - Battle 2
8 FF10 - Enemy Attack
7 FF9 - Battle 2
6 FF15 - Omnis Lacrima
5 FF13 - Sabers Edge
4 FF4 - Battle 2
3 FF6 - The Decisive Battle
2 FF7 - Fight On!
1 FF8 - Force Your Way
