Final Fantasy 9 stands out on it's own, the charming and beautiful classic fantasy setting with sprinkle of sci-fi plus the dramatic dark parts of the story, it's full of bright and dark moments and in between, so collectively it's a perfect old school FF, but if someone wants a bit more mature setting then FF12 is what I suggest.
Never really bothered too much with others and some FF games I can't stomach at all. I still to this day don't understand the so called hype over FF7. Back in a day next to no one cared for it, heck even the looked over FF8 I remember having more hype then 7. I basically asked and waited for FF9 and happy that it happened, there were plenty of other genres and games in general in between so it's not like we craved a FF game.
The older pixely games have good stories but they are quite dated for some people gameplay vise and somewhat repetitive too. BUT if a player likes those type of games more then obviously rather suggest those over the mentioned above.
So it all boils down who likes what type of styled games and not much which one is important to what since they are mostly standalone entries anyway even tho some FF games have ties to some other games and have spioffs that some even are more fun then the OG entries. So there is that too ...

Your pick for starting FF games are actually the exact ones I would have picked as well.
I think depending on what you're looking for there's two distinct "eras" of Final Fantasy that give two good starting choices: If you want the classic retro experience (the pixel sprite based ones) then FFIV is perhaps the best starting point. It's where Final Fantasy really hit their stride in terms of story. You can feel their confidence in their product finally after the first three being experimenting.
And as for the more modern ones. Oh YES it's FFX. It's incredibly accessible being on everything, it's got a fantastic story with excellent pacing where the lore is divulged in palatable bite size portions where you never truly feel overwhelmed at any moment. It's beginner friendly with easy to figure out mechanics and well explained tutorials. It still holds up visually and looks fantastic in some scenes even compared to modern titles today. The voice acting for the most part ranges from "fine" to fantastic. It's soundtrack is a KNOCKOUT. It has the best turn based battle system with ctb bar. It's got lots of endgame content. Can I praise this game enough?!! I really can't. it's just such a solid masterpiece of a game and easily worth your time playing. I haven't had a single person play this game and not enjoy it. It truly is something special.

Experienced FF fans feel the same way as everything stated in the video. I gave the exact same score going off of his scale for every single game. That’s not to say the games with a low score are bad! On the contrary, some of the poor starting points are extremely good games in their own right. FF8 music, world, characters are so charming. And unlike many others I really like the story as well. But it has a whole host of problems. Even still, FF fans who look for the same value of content that I do love this game just as much. It’s not the best, but like XII, it’s a damn good one.

Thanks Jordan, for yet another amazing and insightful perspective. I shall be sending this to the wife... I keep trying to get her to play a final fantasy, just any of them. I always suggest she start with 6 or 7, but she's more familiar with KH and the arpg combat kind of stuff, so she has been intrigued by 7r and 15.
I'm thinking GENUINELY 9 or 10 will probably wind up being where she starts, I don't know. I am sending this to her meow. Hope all is well for you and the rest of the family at switchwatch! Haven't been on too much of the youtubes lately. Cheers everyone!

I personally started with FFX when i was a kid, my mother had it on PS2 and i picked it up there, it came out when i was born but i quickly fell in love with it and picked up the hd remaster on ps3, later on switch then on PC and have played it over and over, its a great starter for the start of the more modern and more intensively rendered games that would come later, i have a very soft spot in my heart for the franchise and am excited for XVI to arrive on PC because i can't justify to myself to get a PS5 just for that game alone, not yet

Never finished 8, 10 (90% or so, bounced off Sin), or 15, but am familiar with them through retrospectives.
I largely agree with Jordan here.
FFX or FFIV would be my recommended starting points, with 15 getting a nod for being the most up to date (discounting 7R because I agree you should play OG7 first).

My first (and favorite to this day) final fantasy was 4 on the snes, but I played it on release. At the time it was a big step forward in every way. While it has aged, it set the template for what final fantasy became for a decade. If anyone decides to go with it, I recommend the psp version.

As a fan of every single FF (hard to do, I know) I tried putting myself in those starting shoes. I came up with almost an identical list as you. Exceptions were a minor point added to 15 and 14 I classed as closer to a 2/5 since it was actually reasonable to learn the mechanics. Solid list and couldn't complain whatsoever.
My bias is to 11 as my favorite, and one of those players still playing it. Still agree with the 0/5 on it, lol.

I actually agree with your Terminator/Alien example: everyone knows the sequels and most people seen them on TV or whatever, but so many ignore the first ones and it's just not the same experience not watching the original film. Surprisingly, Final Fantasy I is NOT awkward, apart from characters starting with no equipment, it's VERY accessible. There are moments where you can get lost but those are in every game (my friend dropped FFVII twice when Yuffie stole his materia and he didn't know what to do next). Get a guide, I guess, but playing FF1 is something really special because it feels like a proper D&D game but Japanese.

My first was VIII or VII but i believe it was VIII, it was an incredible start, have so much mixed feelings, the Junction system was hard at first, in fact it's maybe the hardest system in the series. But once you try the hardest one first then the rest will felt easy, that's what i felt, VII is too simple with materia and IX is also simple with the equipment and abilities, so i think IX is 5/5 to be a start, its simple and anyone can understand the system well.
I hardly finish the series below VII, i just don't like the graphics, and lack of characters stories for each one made them like puppets that's there only to assist you, you see in IX everyone joins you because of a strong purpose, each one has a story, that's what makes "fantasy" for me

Personally I'd suggest an order of something like FF I (PSP), FF IV (PSP), FF VI (SNES), FF VII and then FF IX to fully appreciate the difference between the original and more modern games. Also on the ones where I think the version is particularly important I put my preferred platform since different versions of various games can be VERY different.
The first six games have been redone quite a few times and the different versions can be pretty different. In particular I still don't think there is a perfect version of three as each version has problems that aren't shared by the other version and on six I still don't think they've topped the original SNES version. Also whatever you do, don't play the GBA version of FF IV because it is just completely broken.

If you like turn based rpgs: X
If you want deep lore and world building: XII
If you like action games: VII remake
If you like pixel old school rpgs: VI
Etcetera. That would be a standard answer.
There's a ff for everyone. And loving a genre doesn't really make or break it so much, cause you know, I like action rpgs like Monster hunter or Ys the most, and don't like pixel graphics anymore, but XII and VI are my all time favourites.
I'll say start with the last. If you like it, you may wanna look back and see how the older entries were. Chances are that the fist one will be one of your favourites, because the more games you play, the more they feel already "seen". But who knows. Maybe you will find an old copy of ff3 for Nintendo DS and fall in love with it.

I started with VIII and missed A LOT of stuff. It's in my top 3 with Tactics still.... I think people should start with the most linear one, 4, ANY version, or 10. 7 holds up really well gameplay-wise but it's so ugly starting with it will turn off anyone who doesn't have Stockholm syndrome with PS1 LEGO graphics. I never played FFVII remake but it might be good one as well. BUT THEN PLAY FF1 AND 6. Don't have to finish them, just experience, the first game is surprisingly good (again, any version, with MP or charge magic), and VI is just so solid!

My first was IV on snes, shortly after it came out. But my favorite has always been VI. Even with all the hype around VII, I still preferred VI. My rankings as a kid were VI, IV, then VII. But as time has passed, IV didn't age as well and VII took its place as 2nd. I always thought this meant VI was by far the best one and stood the test of time, but I see many young people saying they started with the later FF games and can't get into any of the SNES ones and hope for a remake of VI because they can't get past the dated graphics.

I had no choice.....My introduction was from the beginning: I, IV, VI, VII, VIII, V, IX, X, II, XII, III, XIII, XV, and XVI.
I would go that route truly. I would swap III with V (Now that there is the Pixel Remaster of III) with III to lessen the disappointment with its job system. The Pixel Remasters have made the originals easier for this generation. They are far less grindy. And the prices are a little less than the originals as well. Even II, which I just did not like the system was made easier with the boosts, so I could actually pay attention to the story and game. It is actually really good.
VI will always be my top favorite. And VII is as good as it gets too. I loved VIII....not too many others did.

first ff game i beat was VII. i just beat it for the first time recently. next im going to play IX

IV and X are 1 and 1a as starting points, depending on how old-school or new school the person is. I and VII are next, since they realistically are the ones that started the most love affairs with the series.
And I actually think VIII is a better starting point than IX, even though the latter is a substantially better game. VIII is a much more standalone game than IX, which has a heavy dose of nostalgia and references to other games. There’s also the backward logic of starting with one of the lesser entries so everything after seems better by comparison.

I haven’t played any of the games other than 7 remake (yes I’m on the younger side lol) but I kind of disagree with the idea that you shouldn’t recommend the better games first. How am I supposed to get invested in a series if you give me the okay stuff first and the good stuff way after. I may never get to the good stuff.

I don't even have to check the video, it's 4.
Because it's Final Fantasy at its most pure, without the clunkiness and obtuse story of the first 3 games. You start off with 2 unadulterated badass character types in a Dragoon and a Dark Knight. Cecil and Kain being awesome characters in their own right as well. The gameplay is easy to get into, and the first boss fight has mechanics that teaches you that not all fights will just be smacking things for high damage, you'll have to strategize sometimes or take a lot of damage. Then you have better games to look forward to after you complete 4.
Of course I will watch your video after posting this though.

I played FFIX first and loved it... 5/5 for me, but I think that depending on your age, it doesn't really matter where you start. If you're under 15 and never played a JRPG, you probably can't go wrong with any of them up until and including X.

  • @MrGnuh

i mean, starting with 14 all but guarantees that you'll play the other ones. it'll just be a while.... a loong while. at this point 14 is 10 years worth of story development. it's an amazing ride but yeah... all the other titles would have to wait

FF6 then FF7. After that the person should probably have a good idea which one they want to play next or if Final Fantasy is a series thry want to continue playing.
FF6 is the best of the classic games and is very friendly to new players. FF7 is the game that shows the beginnings of what FF gradually became.

Final Fantasy V is the best one to start with. It's simple, has a good basic story (that has aged better than most games in the series), and the job system is intuitive but easy to pick up.

I think ff7 remake gets too much hate as a starting point i just started it playing no other ff game and honestly so far I’m not really that lost the only problem I have with the story is you don’t really know why everyone hates shinra besides them being bad and starting a war like *referring to character roles such as Tifa Jessie etc etc I’m sure it’s explained later but it honestly should be explained earlier and my second is that the game doesn’t properly explain mako as well as it should but ya Ik what it is it’s the essence of the planet but it should be explained deeper but that’s fine i personally think it’s a great starting point

The best final fantasy is: Chrono trigger. It’s beginner friendly too. The pixel art graphics still look good in todays standards.
Meanwhile the graphics of older and 3D final fantasies didn’t age well.

I started with the DS titties. So 3 & 4 on the DS, 5 & 6 on the SNES (I think), 1 & 2 are kinda rough but playable.
O yeah, FF8 was my first FF title back in college! Since then I've played 15 Pocket which was God awful, 13, 13-2 and Lightning Returns (stopped 3 hours into) which were all horrible.
I've stopped playing FF tittles after those experiences.
    Maybe I'll get around to 7, 9, 10, 10-2 and 12 after 16 reviews.
