14:00 The 2020 Remake actually still provides choice to the player when going up the Shinra Building. Once you go through the garage and have Tifa get the keycard, you have the choice of going to the left and going up the stairwell peacefully (albeit fun character moments) or head straight to the elevators "guns blazing" where you will have a few fight encounters with Shinra.

@@gotreddonyou2439 Yeah the first time I played I chose the stairs and the second time I chose the elevator. I will always tell people to do the stairs. It's so much fun to listen to the banter and I love the fact that the characters feel the same way you do when you just about to reach the top.

i went into remake with knowledge that it was going to be different to the original game so the shellshock of that was minimal, the ending however was a complete mindfuck. i like both games equally but for different reasons. they aren't the same game, both gameplay and story wise, so much so that i argue that you have to the play the original before playing the remake. Remake very much assumes you've played the original game and i think you can't really appreciate the changes and little details without playing the original, it also gives away some of the twists of the original game early that i say takes away from them a bit. both are great games and i recommend both of them.

"REMAKE" is just a subtitle of the game. It's actually a pseudo-sequel, since as you said, game expects you to have prior knowledge of the original plot (including spin offs like Crisis Core)

    • @boomerpatrol2838
      @boomerpatrol2838 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

@DravenxEyeless yeah pretty much any I understand how that can be a point of criticism of the game because it's not really a true remake

From what I've seen in game and interviews, as we all know, there are still a lot of Sephiroth remnants and reunion clones, one of course being Cloud, and because of this, Sephiroth's will was somehow able to travel in the lifestream to trigger changes in the past. We don't know how much future knowledge he has, but I think this series of "remakes" will be focusing on finally wiping out all of the Jenova cells and Sephiroth remnants for good.
And if that means I can play a game I love from a new perspective and not know what's coming, then hell yeah! I'm terrified that I don't know what's going to happen, and I love it!

@@DravenxEyeless Not a "pseudo" sequel. Just a sequel.
The "Remake" part was an elaborate lie, and honestly, the Japanese intelligence bureau (or the closest equivalent) should hire Square Enix 's marketing and brand management department yesterday. The way they essentially gaslighted the entire planet into accepting this ruse, instead of the utter insult it is, would turn Japan into a geopolitical superpower in less than a decade.

Thinking of it as filler and padding just seems like setting yourself up for a bad time. I played the remake first and felt that it was very well paced. Everything felt relevant and fun. I was actually surprised when I went back and played the original and so much of it wasn't there. I think knowing what's gonna happen from the start makes you impatient to get to the parts you recognize instead of enjoying the extra content on its own terms.

    • @carlosjuliop
      @carlosjuliop 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +69

This. I just don't get this "padding" complaint. Like, what's your rush in getting to the next set piece? Just enjoy your time in this world and with these characters, man. I wanted to spend a week doing missions with Tifa in sector 7 before going to the next reactor lol.

    • @gabrielnovais871
      @gabrielnovais871 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

@@carlosjuliop I kinda agree that the additional parts are really nice and cool for the narrative, but after the second playthrough, some parts are really boring to do again, like that mechanical arm or Corneo's Coliseum just to get to the part that you want. Also, this game not having a boss rush mode is one of the few flaws that it has, because it is really a pain to complete 90% of a chapter just to get to the boss fight

    • @CrazyxEnigma
      @CrazyxEnigma 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

There's the good stuff when the characters are front and center where they and the relationships are fleshed out more or those serious, powerful emotional moments like when the plate goes down or when you reach the top and look down and see the destruction and feel the weight of it all. And then there's the filler like running around to fetch cats or kids or whatever it is the quest giver wants. These aren't exclusive to FF7R and lots of other games do this too but it's still annoying no matter what game it's in.
I also personally didn't like it when you often got railroaded and couldn't go in a certain direction as your forced to slow walking speed and given a warning you can't go that way. Especially annoying like in the church when you meet Aerith the first time they taunt you with a materia right there and you're blocked from getting it, like it's right there let me have the shiny 😂
These are just nitpicks for the most part though I do hope Rebirth makes the side stuff more interesting like the card game, that looks like fun and will hit the same notes Gwent did for me in Witcher 3.

    • @BobEllwood
      @BobEllwood 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

I agree. Padding is too negative a term for what it is. Everything Remake does either
      1. Expands the narrative
      2. Teaches the player a game mechanic or provides them a fun challenge with a meaningful reward
      3. Helps the pacing of the game by giving the player things to do other than watch cutscenes
      4. Usually (though not always haha) all 3
I also think the video was spot on when he mentioned how clouds expression mimic'd the players, but that's totally on purpose. FF7 Remake and Rebirth have a lot of side quests that poke fun on how 90's RPG's had boring, chore, side-content. Usually the characters remark how boring the quest is, it's played for laughs, and there's a fun twist halfway through so its not ACTUALLY boring.

I played this game when it launched on ps4. Throughout my life I've played FF7 on ps1, switch, pc, xbox, and ps4. The entire sequence of Midgar takes place in up to 6 hours. You can breeze through it on any original playthrough. What I love about Remake is it allows a more in depth look at Midgar; the people who live there both above and below the surface. It expands this super linear quest into allowing the player to get in touch with WHY and WHO they're fighting for. Jesse's dad is suffering from Mako poisoning, hence why she's so adamant on the cause. Aerith is super uplifting and almost "fake" because she's hiding something and just wants to be normal. Barret has this overall resolve of why he's fighting that becomes fleshed out.
In the end the remake expanded on what was a "mundane" part of the game and gave the player a reason as to WHY they're doing what they are. Why the connections and people are so important. I have played through this story 4 times now and every time I learn something new. It's a great game and opens the eyes of the players to know exactly what they're working toward. Not only that, it gives more background into antagonists, side characters, and otherwise uninteresting characters. They all serve a purpose, whereas in the original, they were just passerby's. I love Remake and how it aimed to flesh out the world of Midgar, and since Rebirth has come out, the same is true for that. It fleshes out parts where the player was once like, "oh this would be cool to see animated." We see the Midgarsomr actually end up on a pike and and a quick glance as to the original "Oh Sephiroth was here..." We see the flashback and players who KNOW what's going on can easily recognize something isn't right here.
Both Remake and Rebirth are fleshing out a world which in the beginning was mundane and could easily be walked through. And that's why I love SE for making this game into what it has.

So about the changes: I really would've preferred if they had made changes to the story without including the whispers.
As a narrative tool; they feel like the writers dropped the pen and took hold of a sledgehammer - then proceeds to whack the players over their heads; with about as much finesse and subtlety as the delivery: "THIS. IS. GOING. TO. BE. DIFFERENT!!!".
Would've preferred a finer touch, a more natural way to make changes to the story. Besides, "fate" narratives always rub me the wrong way because it absolves the characters of all their actions since they were destined to make them, effectively removing any agency they had.
But as you said: It's the first game in a trilogy so we'll have to wait and see how it wraps up. No denying it's ballsy.

Mostly wanted to point out that I enjoy your insight on that because I'm not sure how many people get that.
It's just like "main character, you are important because the plot says so."

I never played the original, so I enjoyed all the "padding" they added. All the new stuff and the grander scale to it all made the game feel like the experience my Dad, Uncle, and 2 Step Brothers would gush about when I was little. The fact that I had some 20+ years of the legend of Final Fantasy VII and no actual context for the gameplay made everything in Remake so good. When I beat Remake I did try to play the original and got al the way out of Midgar in maybe 5 hours. I imagine had I played it before the Remake I would be as annoyed by the extra stuff but I am enjoying both Remake and Rebirth with child-like wonder and only spoilers due to osmosis. Its a genuinely new experience for me and I'm glad I never ruined that for myself.
The Sephiroth fight was a nice treat 4 years ago, Had the game just ended after the Jenova monster and them leaving Midgard I think hype for Rebirth wouldn't have carried for 4 whole years. At least for me. It was a nice fanservice moment for something to come. Essentially just a playable trailer. On a replay or if anyone tries to do a "Full" playthrough once every game is out I imagine it wont hold as much weight and feel almost gaudy right before switching to Rebirth.

FF7 Remake is pretty much a combination of a Retelling and Sequel/Reboot (Remake being a bit of an in-universe allusion to how the game is a remaking of events)
We, as the player, are viewing it as a retelling. But in-universe, it's a Sequel/Reboot, Sephiroth seemingly being from the OG FF7 Timeline, and being the creator of this new reality (His attempts and success at altering things spurring The Whispers to awaken).
So, with the Whispers defeated/now controlled by Sephiroth, the future as it was in the OG FF7 is not fixed, things can change, but now Sephiroth can seemingly use the Whispers to try to enforce the future *he* wants now.
What that future is, it's unknown (as the game says, the Unkown Journey continues). But it is one where the Extinction of Humanity may not be guaranteed anymore as it was in the OG FF7 Timeline.

I have a lot of qualms about the remake, but my biggest gripe was the plate and subsequent fight against the turks (originally just Reno).
The plate support sequence in the original was tense. Battle music never stopped as you climbed up. You saw the avalanche gang and they gave a few farewell words, but the moment was always pressing and you couldn't stop to talk to them. You made it all the way to the top real quick because of that. There, you met Reno for the second time, whose only job is to trigger the pillar bomb. He effortlessly lands, goes past the gang, arms the bomb, and when Tifa says it has to be disarmed, he says he can't let them do that and the fight starts. Reno here isn't fighting to beat the team, he's just there to buy time. It's 3 VS 1 and he still handles the gang without too much problem, before zipping off.
In the remake, the support sequence is a slog. Jesse and Wedge gives a touching farewell that just lasts forever. I understand they tried to flesh out their characters, but there are some hellishly pressing matters that need to be taken care of. The climb also has a lot of "hide from the helicopter sequence" that, again, break the momentum of the scene. Once you reach the top, you fight Reno, and then Rude in his helicopter, and you beat them both. They're down and nearly dead, but then Reno upgrades to cutscene Reno and, through the power of pulling stuff from his behind, manages to run past Cloud and crew (who got downgraded to their onomatopoeia spouting cutscene versions) to arm the bomb, dooming sector 7.
The original has a stressful moment that lets you meet one of the recurring antagonist of the game, who barely has time for you.
The remake has a stretched thin padded climb into a pretty impressive looking fight that makes the turks look equal/inferior to cloud and gang, only to get shafted by a cutscene.

17:15 also, the sequence leading up to this showdown, with Cloud flying down to meet Sephiroth and the quick cuts between one another is basically a shot-for-shot remake of the very end of the original game where you have that final showdown with a shirtless Sephiroth and unleash your Omnislash limit on him.... but I guess since he doesn't have that limit break at this point of the story maybe that's why he barely does anything to Seph in this version.

I am very disappointed they decided to go the route they took with the game instead of giving the fans the updated remake we had been asking for over the years. This game would have been perfect if they'd just left out all of the fate and time stuff that they unnecessarily added to the story. Then, they got my hopes up again with Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis only for that to end in disappointment as well.
The original Final Fantasy VII is my favorite game ever. It gave me so many fond memories and emotional experiences and actually helped mold many of my deeply held personal beliefs and values, as well as my overall worldview. So, I had been hoping and looking forward to reexperiencing it all again someday, upgraded for current gen consoles. Now, I know it'll never happen.

Before Remake came out, I decided to play the og FF7 but only by section as that's how the remade games were confirmed to be. I was spoiled about major plot stuff a long time ago so I had no issue learning where these new games would start and end. Strictly going by this criteria, I had a very different outlook on Remake compared to the half fanbase that said Remake got it wrong.
While not making any outright accusations, I will at least say that og fans can be confusing at times. I can understand the real criticisms around padding because there is indeed quite a bit of it but the og Midgar has a lot of life to it aesthetically but not as a character. The Avalanche gang, save for Barret, were bland and nobodies who were written as fodder for shock value to raise story stakes, Shinra itself felt off with comically goofy yet cartoonishly evil villains and the general vibe went back and forth on a genuinely interesting story to a very decent to alright one. The quality didn't dip exactly at any point but for me, the game picked up immensely after leaving Midgar entirely. Then again, then entire story arc of Midgar is meant to be an introduction to a larger story as Shinra was more or less sidelined for Sephiroth at the last second. Not counting Hojo's importance to everything, I found Midgar to be an entertaining yet not all that unique start to FF7 in retrospect.
Remake made Midgar feel like a real place with real people. People who mattered and weren't just funny NPC's to talk to. It had a lot of padding for sure but not all of it was bad or even meaningless. I found myself seeing what was different but not really caring because I liked Midgar conceptually but you don't spend as much time in it as one would think in the og(not until much later that is). Remake fleshed out a lot of areas that made the whole place feel like it had a greater story to tell from everyone in it. A few places certainly didn't stick the landing but what I got from Remake blew the og out of the water by a long shot. I understand the Whispers are also a point of contention but I never felt they were invasive, moreso just intriguing because they actively showed up during major deviations of the og. They could've been utilized better but they started to feel integral after awhile, even with the crazy boss fight towards the end. Giving Sephiroth more of a role to play is also something I vibe with because the game doesn't shy away from switching villains like the og but rather shares them. Shinra is very much threatening in the Remake and that never once lets up even when you start seeing visions of Sephiroth clearly torturing Cloud mentally and emotionally. This balance of factions and character interactions, to me, makes Remake far better than the og Midgar.
Overall, I can't and won't stand on the nostalgia argument for why people dislike or like Remake. I think objectively, they're both stellar games despite their issues. Rebirth will likely live up to the hype as I am currently going through the og version and having a blast. I'm very much looking forward to what's been redone and added, especially seeing as how the demo really does it's job of showing you what it's all about. Honestly, I recommend you play any of these games, altogether or otherwise because these are gaming history and should be experienced

Yup. He calls the new stuff "filler" as if most of it wasn't good. Simply the extra time you get with all the characters does a *lot* to make you care about them and everything going on in the game. This was my first FF game, so even though I inevitably knew all the spoilers from OG FFVII beforehand, I had no attachment to it, so I was able to enjoy Remake for what it was instead of what I wanted it to be. Then I went back and started playing the PS1 version.

After playing Remake I of course had to go back and play the original again and wow..after 8 or 9 years away from that game you really forget just how short the Midgar portion actually is 😅
Personally I had very similar feelings on Remake. Overall very positive. They really captured the nostalgia and got the tone right for just about all of it. They obviously took a lot of pride and care in recreating it which I really appreciate. These are really my only complaints:
    ● Barret is practically spot-on character wise while Yuffie is miles away from her original self (she's meant to be a wise cracking goblin whose only goal is to rob you. Here she's a generic anime teen with dreams of saving the world)
    ● Cloud is very close but they do rush through his "indifferent" phase. He gets sentimental a bit too fast in Remake
    ● Wish the game wasn't so linear. One of my favorite things in FF7 was exploring the world and finding unique weapons, materias, or items hidden in weird locations off the beaten path. In Remake there really isn't any of that. It's all just handed to you along the way
    ● Fuck Chadley
    ● Wish there weren't so many divergences from the original story. Especially the Barret death fake-out and Sephiroth fight at the end. Feels pretty disjointed from the core story
Other than that, absolutely magnificent job. Found myself getting lost in it and the nostalgia it brings. Just being transported back to my early teens sitting in front of that dusty box TV for a few hours is well worth the asking price. Bravo guys. Sincerely, bravo

The original is so special to me. Experiencing it for the first time in the 90's was magical. Recent playthroughs have also been a blast. The game has aged surprisingly well. Some of the mini games haven't aged well, but they are a relatively small part of the game so aren't a big deal.
The "Remake" was the most painful gaming experience of my life and it's easily the worst game I have ever played. The combat is boring and repetitive as you can slash and dodge your way through most of the battles. The exploration is repetitive and boring because modern Square don't know how to design levels. The side quests are pointless, boring filler that are big waste of time. The look and atmosphere of Midgar is a mixed bag, some places feel unrecognisable due to odd lighting choices or having an overall different design (For example Wall Market looks like a completely different place). The voice acting is a mixed bag. The main cast are good but side characters sound unauthentic and take me out of the game.
The story changes are jarring and utterly bizarre because the "Remake" is essentially a sequel that takes place in an alternate timeline, as opposed to a remake of the original. People new to the series would not only be lost regarding some of the events that are unfolding, but some of the original story elements are outright spoiled for them! A major plot twist from later on in the original game is hinted at very early on in the "Remake" and I have no way to comprehend why the hell they would feel the need to do that, as it benefits nobody.

Gotta say I liked it but honestly as an early 2000s baby I felt like a play through isn’t necessary and it’s better to just watch a play through online.
The game is just too damn old and archaic in its controls and graphics and even some of its writing at times. But I loved seeing how older games had to function due to limitations and comparing that to what we have now. It’s always fascinating to see how much graphics changed back then, and how rapidly they changed to (FFX and FFVII are only about 4 years apart)!

The only downside is that it is heavily dependent on you having played the OG. However, having finished played Rebirth now, and after digging through some of the details in that game, it's obvious to me now that to truly appreciate what they're planning with Remake, you have to have knowledge of the previous game, and even of the entire compilation, including Advent Childre, Dirge of Cerberus, and Crisis Core. Again, it's sort of unfortunate that we have to go through all that, but given how big Remake is and where I bet they're going, it'll all be worth it in the end.

the remake/rebirth what rewhatever trilogy allows me to thoroughly enjoy the game. i do find the rebirth open world concept is a bit ... not what i expect, and i personally thing that took a lot away from story driven games like FF. I do think, the FF7 remake strike the perfect balance between tight story line, and just enough freedom to explore around without taking the focus away from the story (like the ff7 rebirth, i can totally let go of the entire open world concept until the last moment before the game ends).
i do find it is disappointing knowing that majority delay of the part 2 is probably caused by the openworld itself, which isn't even the focus of FF7.

My Top 3 All-Time Favorite FF Girls
    1. Tifa Lockhart (FF7)
    2. Yuna (FFX)
    3. Lulu (FFX)
It’s Yuna from FFX and not from X-2 where she turned into a J-pop singer. 😂 I like Yuna’s virgin innocence from FFX.
Tifa and Lulu have the big knockers. I’ve always liked Tifa’s personality more than Aerith (or Aeris) because I felt she always cared for Cloud and she always stood up for him. But I do like Aerith and hope this remake does remove her death scene working similar to a multiverse and an alternate timeline like Star Trek 2009.
Lulu is my “Black Magic Woman” like that Santana song. Lulu is like that hot goth chick in high school who got hotter as she got older. She’s always acted mature well beyond her years. She’s listed to be only the age of 22 in FFX but she acts like some hot MILF in her late 20s to 30s. Or think Joan in the TV series, Mad Men.
I grew to enjoy Yuna more over Lulu when beating FFX a second time on my cousin’s Vita OLED. Her summons are the most important to me when defeating Sin.
My final party for the end of FF7 & FF10
    FF7 -
    Cloud (duh)
    Cid
    Yuffie
    FF10 -
    Yuna
    Auron
    Wakka
Even though Yuffie isn’t one of my favorite characters and I hated her initially back in 1997 for stealing my Materia, I grew to enjoy using her after beating FF7 a third time on my modded PSP about 13 years ago. Apply her with 4X cut / critical hit and you’ll get 9999 every time. And her speed for turn-based fights and her level 3 Doom of the Living limit break kicks ass!
For character, it’s Tifa. For player usage, it’s Yuffie. Now in FF10, Yuna is for character and for player usage. While Lulu is the stronger of the two girls during the first half of the game, once Yuna gets all her summons (or aeons), she’s the most powerful character in your party at the end of the game. Yuna’s class party is summoner and that’s what she is. Tifa is a regarded a monk. Aerith is a white mage. Lulu is a black mage like Vivi.
While I do love Final Fantasy X and feel like it’s the last great FF game and the last time Hironobu Sakaguchi helped develop a FF game, I still do prefer Final Fantasy VII more. FFX is my favorite PS2 game of all-time but FF7 is my favorite video game, period. More memorable characters, gameplay, and music. Better story and tons of fun mini games in the Gold Saucer.
I hope we get to buy the villa again in Costa del Sol which is named after a real region in Spain. I hope we can play volleyball like in Dead or Alive Xtreme and someone does a nude patch for Tifa and Aerith. I love my modded Vita for having a nude patch for Dead or Alive Extreme 3. All girls topless and Brazilian waxed.
Tifa or Aerith is like asking Ginger or Mary Ann? Most Gilligan’s Island fans actually pick Mary Ann, but for this case, Tifa is Ginger AND Mary Ann. She has sex appeal and she’s wife material. Imagine getting the sweetness of Olivia Rodrigo or Iman Vellani (Ms. Marvel) mixed with Alexandra Daddario or Sydney Sweeney’s huge rack and that’s Tifa.

How to forget the time when Sephiroth came to Midgar and meteored all over the place and Aerith was like 'no, i'll cast holy using Shinra president's body as ahost'. Man... those times...

I dislike that Sephiroth shows up so early & often. He was built up so well off-screen in the original that when you finally encounter him he feels like this force of nature.

Having never played the original FF7, I just took my time with Remake and enjoyed every minute of it. I can see how a lot of the new additions can be considered padding, though. And yeah the ending was a pretty big mindfuck, but I thought the Sephiroth boss fight was a lot of fun and the remix of One-Winged Angel was incredible.

The problem with basing your reviews on other people's playthrough videos rather than playing the game yourself will always lead to glaring gaps in the reviewers knowledge, such as the fact that you do have a choice of using stairs or a lift in order to infiltrate the Shinra building where the person you watched clearly went for the stairs so you just assumed that was a fixed option. And yes of course the game is going to feel stretched and padded out if you are watching someone else play it, it's never going to be as fun watching someone play a game VS playing a game yourself. Personally, I played the game six times before Rebirth was released and I wouldn't change a thing.

I haven't played the remake since I don't have a PS4 or PS5 but I find it fascinating how Square-Enix expanded the game compared to the original. Speaking about the original game, I was around 4 when FFVII and I didn't actually play it until I was in my teens, sadly I got a pirated copy from the European Spanish translation of the game, which I thought it would be great since the game was translated, but that translation is awful, filled with typos and errors, but for some reasons Aerith and Sephiroth are still referred as Aeris and Sefirot in modern Spanish translations to this day. It took me years to actually beat the game, but since the I finished the entire game three times and mamaged to obtain all the characters' final Limit Breaks. Still, while FFVII is not my favorite game in the seires, I can understand why it had such an impact, I just hope that Rebirth and the final game in the remake project will satisfy long-time fans. I also hope that Square will remake some other FF games in the future, but not like they did with VII

The only "padding" I felt was out of place was the second trip to the sewers. It was a bit of a drag. All the side quests, while they can be considered padding are optional. There is even incentive to skip them to get the trophies for Aerith's different dresses.

In my opinion, the part where Sephiroth tries to kill Barrett is testing the Whispers' limits. Sephiroth already knows about the Whispers and that the story is told the same way over and over and he always loses. Now he was testing what the limits of whispers were, so he appears before the party, tries to kill Barrett, and in my opinion tricks the party by entering the “void” before the final battle. By destroying the Whispers the possibilities are open and it may even be that Aerith does not die.

The original is for a different kind of gamer. I no longer actively detest the remake franchise because I have no reason to.
To put it bluntly: Square Enix is a completely different company from Squaresoft with completely different target demographics and a completely different business model. As such they could not simply make the same game but upgraded in every way - the differences are key to monetizing the fandom and maintaining continuous revenue through other sources such as merchandise, spinoff games and advertising deals with other companies.
I'm not saying this is necessarily a bad thing, since anyone can spend their money how they wish, it's simply a statement - FF7 was a breakthrough hit that took the world by storm and FF7R was carefully crafted to be the centre of a franchise.
I'm not the kind of gamer who gets into fandoms, so it's just not my kind of game. You like it? Cool, enjoy. We good.

A key point that casuals miss about the Sephiroth fight at the end of FF7 Remake is that in the original game, this is a fight we just never got. Cloud and the party never fight Sephiroth, they only fight his God forms at the very end of the game. So this battle, was a LONG time (23 years) coming and a gift to the fanbase. You're just memeing here for people who dont know any better

So as I've said before, if they cut some fluff and end the game at Kalm instead of Midgar. Remove all Sephiroth appearances, but have the Kalm Flashback, you can actually end the FFVII game with a Sephiroth Final Boss battle. *That you lose*.
This keeps his mystique and power, instead of us whooping his ass and trivializing him. And they can still have their Sephiroth battle.
Of course, I am also a proponent of removing the whispers and just telling the original story with some extra sauce. But I still feel like my version is better.

Both Remake and Rebirth are great re-envisioning of the original if you ignore the final chapter of both games. I wish we never would have seen Sephiroth until the next game during the flashback.

Honestly I don’t understand the hate this got. Even accounting for the Sephiroth battle at the end, and the whispers throughout, remake was pretty spot on to the original midgar section.
Yeah, there’s a bunch of extra stuff attached to it, but honestly, I was happy to spend more time in one of my favorite worlds. Even adding in rebirth, the changes don’t bother me, as it treats itself more like a sequel than it does a remake, and the game always acknowledges the original game as the official canon, and presents itself as an alternate timeline. Had the game made significant changes, ignored the original, sam and asserted itself as the new canon, I’d be a lot more miffed about the changes.

Is it filler/padding, or is it the world that Square wanted to show us back in the original that they simply didn't have the time and resources to show us? It reminds me of Lord of the Rings. For the longest time it just wasn't realistically possible to make a decent adaptation of it to cinema because of the sheer scale and nature of the world he created and the story he told. Until New Line and Peter Jackson came along with all the technology to make it work.

It very much feels like a Disney remake (Lion King?) and there are enough action RPGs out there I wish they'd kept the turn-based gameplay (at least as an option). Also, a lot less Nomura and a lot more Sakaguchi would've been nice. Oh and I hate that every enemy is a damage sponge.

I've been trying to tell everybody that FF7's original battle system is the best.
The reason why Pokémon games get remade is because their mechanics suck since the mid 90s.

I for one loved all the changes. Characters are more fleshed out, there's more time with the party interacting and the game is a great remake in my opinion. Take it from someone that got their faithful remake (brilliant diamond and shining pearl) recreating it 1:1 would have been worse than what they did here.
