Valley of the Gods 17 Mile Loop Road

  • This video contains sped up dashcam footage of traveling the 17 mile Valley of the Gods loop drive west to east. The area is located in southern Utah near the more famous Monument Valley.
    Nothing exciting but may be helpful for those wanting to get a look at the terrain and road through the place before venturing in. We drove it in our 20 foot almost 8 foot wide 2WD F350 dually truck.
    The road is a little rough, narrow and curvy but the scenery is spectacular. The land is BLM and has many spots to pull over and camp in. Access and camping are free. www.blm.gov/st...
    Watch the weather as during wet times the washes may flood, and the dirt can get muddy.
    Long RVs and folks towing trailers need to beware of many steep, sharp dips through dry washes especially coming in from the west entrance off Highway 261. Towards the middle sections, the road is quite narrow with tight curves.
    Off Highway 163 to the east has some larger RV accessible campsites and less drastic dips. We were able to tow our 30-foot fifth wheel in 4 1/2 miles coming from that direction.

    Looks like some good camping spots along the way. So you say not good for a 34 ft RV ?. Good video stay safe

      Coming in from the east off highway 163 you can get in about 5 miles before the washes get a little too steep maybe. My friend got his almost 40-foot fifth wheel in there, he dragged bum a little bit here and there - here is some photos and another video from camping there - www.loveyourrv.com/boondocking-fun-in-the-valley-of-the-gods-utah/

      So maybe a 25 footer (30 foot bumper to ball) might be OK? All these new things to learn and watch for.

    I drive past this road 4 times a year on my way to Colorado... one time I started in, but the first large dip was flooded so I didn't try to go any farther because I was alone... but after watching this video, I really want to return!! Would love to hike this area!! Thanks so much for sharing.

    Wow that was great, we went to Monument Valley and couldn't make it off road there, back then we had a class C. missed the valley of the Gods. Next time. BTW when we went to Goulding's it had a camp store and 30 sites, $10 or &15 a night with hook ups. It was in a box canyon absolutely a beautiful spot. I guess things have changed but the scenery is still spectacular

      We usually travel with a few days worth of emergency food and water at all times, more if we are going off grid quite far. But the drive depicted in this video is not a problem as far as being stranded, the roads are well traveled and folks are camped all over the place, plus most of it is within cell range. Cheers! Ray

      Love Your RV: Thanks for the info. I guess the early settlers did the same thing, in their wagon trains heading across to the west. I don't travel, because I know I'd never want to come back, to see all those sights, to be there, and to have only a memory of it to hold in your mind. I lived in Idaho for six months, while they were training me to work on a nuclear submarine. Idaho Falls was a nice little place by the Snake River. Went to Hell's Half Acre...it was interesting...but it's just a memory now...

    Headed there next week, is the road rough riding for a dully?

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hard to say as conditions are variable. Its a dirt and gravel road that gets regraded every once in a while. I didn't find it too bad when we have visited but if its had a lot of traffic between grading it could get beat up and wash boarded. Also, rain could play a roll, could get torn up with flash flooding and be a mess until they regrade it. Cheers, Ray

    Ray, thanks for taking me through the loop. I enjoyed your video. Question about camping etiquette... Is it expected that only one RV would stop in a particular turnout? or, if you think there is room for two, you can also set up beside another? Example, the spot you had previously camped at the 4:20 mark. It looked like it may be big enough for several campers, but do people expect that its only 1 per area?

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess it depends. There are quite a few pullouts some can hold several rigs others just one. Nothing is stopping you from pulling in its a free for all, but I guess it would be common courtesy to stop and ask if they minded. I'm sure if it was really busy folks would understand and likely will make new friends. :)

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Spring and fall, too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer. Best spots for a Class C would be in from the eastern entrance off highway 163, there are several close to there.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shouldn't have a problem. Times I've been there I've seen small cars like Prius navigating it. One caveat though is this is a dirt road and if the area gets rain it can wash out. So it can change from time to time. But they seem to keep it well graded from what I've seen.

    Your Indy 500 imitation is not needed. If you must do it, just edit those parts out.
    I would caution anyone driving this trail in anything less than a Subaru or Jeep type vehicle against being on this trail if it is wet.
    Also, if you have low facias on your vechicle, I urge you to be extra cautious. Even in good weather, the road can be rough and can rip the front of your car off.
