VALLEY OF THE GODS and the MOKI DUGWAY Drive | A Worthy Monument Valley Alternative | Utah

  • When Monument Valley isn't an option, there is the nearby location of Valley of the Gods. After an impressive drive down the Moki Dugway, you are led to stunning views of buttes and mesas. You can't beat this free thing to do in Utah!
Valley of the Gods is often considered a free alternative to Monument Valley where dispersed camping and drone photography is allowed. Located northeast of Monument Valley, Valley of the Gods is surrounded by beautiful scenery, including Mexican Hat and Goosenecks State Park.
A 17-mile gravel road winds through the valley. While many websites warn that 4-wheel drive is necessary, passenger cars are absolutely safe to take on the road and will experience a few bumps and washboard sections. In general, the road is in great condition, however, be sure to pay attention to the weather as harsh rain and flooding can change the road.
Amazing sandstone buttes, mesa, and towers wait around every corner such as Rooster Butte, Sitting Hen Butte, Castle Butte, and Battleship Rock.

We've used rocks to hold our tent down when stakes were useless. Worked for the fly as well. But the wind storms can be fierce. Learned that in Goblin Valley. But never mind that. A great video and showcase of Valley of the Gods. Damn I wish I had 52 weeks of vacation.

    • @CactusAtlas

Haha! Funny you mention Goblin Valley and winds there... 😉😉 Ah! 52 weeks of vacation would be awesome, wouldn't it? Imagine all the places one could go.

For free-standing tents, I always put rocks in the tent as well as staking it. It's best to put two rocks inside the tent at opposite ends. With just one rock, the wind can roll the tent. I learned this the hard way when my dome type backpacking tent blew into the Escalante River with just one rock inside. It was a sandy area so the stakes didn't really hold.I was able to recover it before my sleeping bag got soaked, but it did have a wet spot. Even if you have decent ground, stakes can work loose in the wind.

Tie a small rock around the paracord tied to your corners then place a larger rock on the rope in between the small rock and tent…works perfect

A little late but at 14:53 those buttes you’re facing. I’ve camped right up against them. The large flat one is Castle Butte and camped with friends there. In fact right where you pull in at 22:23 is where we camped last time 😂
My wife and I and now our son are coming up there from our home in Tucson to camp and enjoy monument valley/valley of the gods in April. These are one of my fave places on earth.

Yes...m a truly spectacular and wonderful place ... a word of caution : When approaching a small rise in the dirt road toward a small hill PLEASE SLOW DOWN to almost zero speed . The down side of these small hills of dirt have another 10 to 20 inches of SAND that will bottom out your vehicle. Have fun !

We just got back from a weekend trip up there, there were a ton of tent campers. As far as turning the Canyon into an overlander, it's very easy and not that pricey. Bed rack and RTT could be as low as $2k and that's all that's really needed.

    • @CactusAtlas
      @CactusAtlas  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Oh that's so cool to know there were some tent campers there. We've been thinking on the overlanding thing. Just not in our budget in the immediate future. Hopefully one day though. 👍

I come to this area using YT several times a year for its grandeur beauty. Cedar Mesa, Muley Point, Shafer Road and the Potash Evaporation Pools are amazing. In the Valley of the Gods, I always think about the indigenous natives living there and how they were able to survive. When you were flying, the drone between the pinnacles was outstanding, and I had the feeling of why I love these videos of my favorite place to visit on YT. The answer maybe because I feel I am touching Mother Earth uniquely because this area is millions of years old of raw naked beauty. This area was a shallow sea I believe on two different periods in the geological record. Thank you for an outstanding video!

The first place you stopped was below "Lady in a Bath Tub". This past fall I spent a week with the lady out my back window. I pulled a 22 foot trailer in from the same direction you used. When I was there the west side of the Valley was almost empty. Most RVs used the east side. A few years ago while camping at Goosenecks I watched a Coors tractor trailer go up the Moki. Great video of The Valley.

I know it’s not a speedy drive down through Moki but looks like it’s shorter which may even out for the distance of Hwy 95 to 191 to 163. Plus my chance to experience this.

Wonderful video of the Moki Dugway! The drone video is spectacular!! We drove up the Dugway several years ago in an Impala so as you say, any vehicle will work. What you didn't point out is that the road is a 10% grade. Our drive wasn't bad until a water truck which was watering the road to keep the dust down passed us and then turned around and came back at us. The road is wider than it looks but it's still pretty narrow.

I think Glenn has thought about a rooftop tent as an option in the past. I know he carries a lot (and I mean a LOT) of stuff in the bed of the truck so not sure how practical it might be. (We were looking into it when he was thinking of getting a SUV instead.) As for the last spot... would I be correct in assuming you were talking about that "walk-in" site? There's room for a truck there according to Glenn, but yeah, that little area where the fire ring is is pretty much walk up only. There's some other sites Glenn filmed that are a bit higher up with really beautiful views as well that sort of overlook things. I left out for the sake of not having an hour long video (😅).

The Utah winds can be fierce. A road just behind your first shot leads to Muley Point with a great view down into the Goose Necks with Monument Valley on the horizon, Very cliffy as you would expect. Evening started off clear warm abd calm but I spent of the night in a crazy rocking tent, A 60 pound Golden Retriever in one corner, an 80 pound Golden in another corner and a 50 pound ice chest in the middle. I was frantically trying to balance and counter balance with visions of the tent (and me) rolling off the ridge and into THE ABYSS,.
And....never mind,,'..I think I can hear Glory Days by Bruce Springsteen. Time to take a nap

Yup. I've heard a lot about those Utah winds from Glenn when he has stayed there and seen some video footage that he filmed of the tent in high winds and the dirt aftermath the next morning. 😂 But facing that next to the drop off of something like Goosenecks or Muley Point? Yikes! Glad your tent held up there and there was no visiting the abyss!

I've done Moki quite a few times and Valley of the Gods three different times. They just never get old. I would recommend some clearance for any car in Valley of the Gods. I did it in a Nissan Kicks, which has around 6" of ground clearance. 2WD is just fine (assuming good weather...don't go if it's raining hard). I actually love Valley of the Gods much more than Monument Valley, perhaps because it takes a tad more effort and is still a bit of a secret.

    • @CactusAtlas

Goosenecks likewise, and it deserves at least one overnight to fully appreciate the views at different times of day and night. Regarding drones, sorry, but I support the ban in Nat’l and State Parks. Maybe you were in too big a hurry...but you missed it. As for the Valley of the Gods road...you best stay off of it if there is a rain.
