RVing friends of ours raved about the Valley of the Gods. Free camping in a gorgeous Utah red rock desert paradise. Man! They were right!
In this video I give you some highlights of our boondocking spot and some of the road that runs through the Valley of the Gods, plus some still photos I took. If you're afraid to scratch the RV this isn't the place for you, but if you love off the beaten path scenic beauty this is definitely the place for you.
We had a fantastic time camping with some Wyoming RV friends and enjoyed hiking, the wildlife and of course photography. Two thumbs up from Love Your RV!

Hey again, I've also camper here - right under the seven sailors. This place is excellent, highly recommended. Up the Moki dugout (right besides the VoG) one can camp there also but, it's a wee bit cold in the colder months. BTW, I did experience a rain storm there, the low parts literally fill very quickly - thank goodness for the 4x4.

We were just there 10-4-18 when a big rain storm came through and caused west lime creek to flash flood trapping some people's rigs from getting out for a few hours. Also scoured out several of the small wash crossings causing our 10 ft. trailer to drag a couple of times. Also a guy pulling a 20+ ft. trailer got stuck on a steep hill and had to be pulled up by another guy. Great spot but conditions can change.
You sure are making it easy for me to plan spots out west when I get there! Nice place and nice video! I'm on the road f/t now, but in Goshen getting sponsors equipment added to toy hauler. Hope to see you on the road some day. Keep up the great videos!

No haven't been to Colorado yet, usually too cold there when we are in the south-west.
Hey u are in my backyard there in utah. Most of those dirt roads are not suitable for cars or rvs. Theres many roads u can travel cuz the local ranchers keep their cows in that area for grazing✌😸🌹💜

I have seen people welding small 8" wheels on the rear of the trailer. Cost about $150. Helps going over deep dips as the rear frame never gets dragged on dirt.
Astro Camper Nice idea, my trailer has a pullout bike rack, it is usually what drags, luckily it has some up and down play to it..

You made the wife and I want to get back to the Valley of the Gods. Beautiful area around Mexican Hat. Did you go north on 263, the highway between Valley of the Gods and Gooseneck Park, a couple miles to Moki Dugway? Then who ever told you about the park, should have mentioned Mulie Point at the top of the Moki Dugway. Mulie Point looks over the San Juan and Gooseneck Park. Great photos on the top.

Beautiful area, my kind of country and free!......I love Utah, red rock country and in a month or so the mountains. Another gem that I'll have to add to my list. One question, is there any cell service? I'm in N. AZ thinking about heading east to NM or N to Utah. Have you done any camping on the Mogollon Rim? You'll have to add that to your list if you haven't. Gorgeous area with fantastic views. Safe travels.
NWHiker Some cell service, our buddies phone worked but no Verizon data for our Jetpack, it's in the Navajo nation area so has some weird little cell carriers there. Mogollon Rim looks great! We have been to the west in Cottonwood and Sedona but never made it over there.
Love Your RV Thanks for the info. I had the same problem last spring when I camped out in the Lk Powell area of AZ-UT. That's the N. edge of the Navaho nation. The second day there I got a text from ATT saying I had exceeded my 20MB data allowance on a partner network and I would be cut off? No indication on my phone that I was off Network and showed up as ATT. I called to find out what's going on and was told it was a Partner Network and was explained in the TOS agreement that I carry around in my back pocket.....:) She reset my data, for another 20MB, so that at least took care of e-mail and light web use while I waited on a new radiator to come in. Stay out of Page AZ area if you expect to use your ATT phone on the data Network.....:)

Thank you for your Videos and Pictures they are always amazing! hope to make it down there next year, or year after.... I was curious if you have to worry about rattle snakes, especially with your dog? or is it still too cold for them?
mrwall1 It was starting to get to the point of worry as the temps came up in the lowlands, but it's pretty high elevation in Utah so nights were still cool, once late March and April hit in the deserts I'm more watchful. We saw a scorpion while there though.

thanks for posting this video, I built a teardrop trailer last year with the express purpose of visiting the valley of the gods. are there many places there for some solitude? how was the night sky?
dank donkerson Yes, there are many spots spread out along and off the main road going through. With such a small trailer you should be able to get way in there. Night sky is awesome. :)

have you or are you considering a composting toilet for boon docking ?
No, first off wife is totally against it. Also, we have a really large waste tank capacity and don't hang around in any one area very long usually maybe a week or so. So, it's not been a big issue for us. Furthermore, we have a separate room for our toilet that is really small and composting toilets take up more space and they are expensive. I have better things to spend my money on. :)
Ray! We’re very close to the Valley of the Gods today. I’m wondering if our 42 foot class A could make it to where you camped. We have a tag axle that can be lifted in the dips (that may help). We have a Wrangler Toad as well. If it is doable, going slowly and carefully, would you tell me the specifics of where you guys camped? I think you mentioned 3 1/2 miles in from the highway just south of Bluff? Thank you, your friend Dale.
Sorry, I'm just not sure. I don't have much experience with the clearance a vehicle like that needs. Also, being a dirt road it can change a lot from year to year, due to washout and floods. Here is the GPS location of where we camped - goo.gl/maps/jSV6jAcNUn42 Cheers, Ray

Thanks Ray. We used the Jeep to preview the road up to where you camped. Looked easy enough so we went for it. As you know, there were many small opportunities for rigs to camp but the best, while staying on the eastern half of the valley, was where you camped. We are here right now at your spot. 96 yesterday!

Love Your RV the skies are inky black with both M31, The Andromeda Galaxy & M33 The Triangulum Galaxy visible without any optical aid. And that’s with a waxing gibbous Moon! The turn off for the road to The Valley of the Gods is 16.5 miles south of the information center in Bluff, Utah. The camp site is just less than 5 miles in from the the highway.

Do you think a 31 foot travel trailer would be too long for there?
Sorry, I can't be sure. We had fifth wheels, I'm 30 feet and my friend is 40 feet. There are many dips and humps, I guess it depends on your clearance. Here is a dashcam video I did of the 17 miles loop in spring 2017 th-cam.com/video/ilbKm6D4J-o/w-d-xo.html

Yes, and hard to say, as the first wash that you have to go through is pretty deep and things change year to year depending on rain and floods in the washes. nothing ins predictable. ;)
But, I went back in 2017 but camped not far away at Goosenecks SP and did a video, I advise to check out camping there as its pretty flat to access - www.loveyourrv.com/goosenecks-state-park-utah/

Just wondering how common it has been for boondockers to come in contact with rattle snakes. I have run into regular rattle snakes but nothing like the mohave green. I have read their active time is from April to Sept. Anyway just wondering.
Not often, usually the temperatures are too cold for them to come out of there burrows or be very active when we are. In 7winters down in the desert I've never seen a snake. For the most part, they are hibernating when most boodockers are there. If the temps are hot enough for the snakes to be active it's too hot for most people to be boondocking.

If a truck and RV can go down this road, a car should be a breeze? (Volvo station wagon)
Yes, I saw small cars navigating with no issues, although road conditions can change over time, its a dirt road, so depends on when it was last graded and if flooding has occurred.

Hello, never boondocked out where you have before... would you expect a 17ft Casita fiberglass TT and 2WD Ford Explorer to be able to travel the same roads (no 4WD? :o). Many thanks!
bster13 I think you would be OK with a rig that small, the road surface was pretty good, not really needing a 4x4, I saw lots of regular cars, small Class C RVs and vans doing the loop. Only problem is one or two good rains can change everything so really it's hard to know for sure. Best to take the Explorer in first to scout it out without the trailer.
Love Your RV I realize this is a very generalized question and I'll receive a very generalized answer, but would you find 2wd adequate 99% of the time for these types of settings in the Wild West or is 4wd "a must?" (No idea as am East coast guy). Thanks!
bster13 I would say with 2wd you can only get to a small slice of the massive amount of public lands out west, but because the pie is so big, that small slice is huge! So a 4wd is not a must. We only have a 2wd dually truck and tow a 30-foot fiver and still get to some awesome places. www.loveyourrv.com/photo-gallery/
The two things that limit us are extremely uneven ground and sand or muddy sections.
Of course folks with 4x4 truck camper and such get to see that much more, but it's a trade off in comfort. There are tons of amazingly scenic spots only a few hundred yards or miles off major paved roads. If you are from the East and have never explored out west you have no idea how much unpopulated land is out there. ;) Cheers Ray

Yes, the Valley of the Gods is BLM land and camping is permitted.

Do you ever have problems with people stealing while you are gone a few hours sightseeing?
Haven't had anything stolen when out in the boonies, the couple items (gas can and bicycle) that we have had taken in the last 8 years of fulltime RVing were when camped at an RV park in a city. And those happened at night when we were sleeping.
Overall I'd say we had more theft problems when we owned a house versus RVing. Truth is I'm more nervous about crime in urban environments versus rural settings. Cheers, Ray

6" axle flip on mine
My axles are flipped OEM, I'm gonna look into having a subframe welding on.
I had to weld 3/16 material to mine. Bent frame on a jeep trail. Was only 1/16 to begin with
A lot of ways to do it. In manufacturing for 32 years. Could add a peice of tube or something but sounds like you got the skills. Super easy and fun project
I also plan on adding some skid bars around sewer lines
Is this BLM land or on the Navajo Reservation. Part of the Valley of the Gods is on Native American lands and not necessarily open for camping.
It is Bureau of Land Management - www.blm.gov/visit/search-details/269135/1 Some local ranchers must have grazing rights as I did see the odd cow.
