- Driver's side axle half shaft replacement on a 1998 Toyota Corolla.
Today we're up in Clarksburg to replace a front axle on a 1998 Toyota Corolla, The driver's side outer axle boot is torn wide open and collecting lots of dirt and sand. The axle is just starting to do the typical "marbles in a can" clicking at full lock to the left. This is a REALLY EASY replacement. The hardest part (usually) is getting the locking clip, that keeps the axle locked into the transmission, to disengage and come out. On THIS particular job the axle nut became the challenge. UNFORTUNATELY the video footage where I stood on the breaker bar, and pounded on the end of the breaker bar (part inserted in the socket) until the nut freed up. This repair is usually simple and easy enough that anyone who can change a tire, can change the axle as well, with fairly basic tools!

I do most, if not all repairs, with tools that I carry around in my overloaded 1997 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. I perform "On-Site" braking and suspension repairs, amongst other diagnostics and services. My tools consist mostly of Craftsman, a few Stanley, Snap-On, Husky, Pittsburgh, and S&K tools. Scan tools include hand held Actron(s) DVOMs, and test lights. I also currently use a Zurich ZR Pro, for advanced and bidirectional diagnostics as well as a Snap-On Verus Pro, for more detailed diagnostics. I'm always expanding my collection, based on need and convenience.

That old Girl put up a good fight , however with the step by step instructions and closeups, you make it possible for anyone to do this job. Good job, Keep them coming.
Nearly broke another breaker bar on this one.. (and I think my camera overheated or something, because the whole "reassembly file" was really crazy data rates. I had to "repair" the file by converting it's format. You can see when my arm pixelates.)
Thank yoi so very much for the video. THANK YOU for not rambling on forever in the beginning like most people do! You a straight to the point man like me! I love it.
Thanks for watching!
Getting out in the February air to do this on my 96. Thanks for the refresher!
Thank goodness that it isn't too difficult a job.... Good luck!
Thank you pops I'm doing this on my 96 corolla this video just took away the fear I had for doing it
I'm glad to see the video serve it's purpose. Thanks for watching!
Great video Split the outer CV Boot while changing the strut. not much more for a while axel here than a replacement Boot. Thanks for making this video, great camera angles, easy instructions and maximum effort
Thanks for the comment and the view! Hopefully a few tips were able to help you out.
Always a pleasure to watch a master work. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Quick and resolved, this vid is shortcut brilliance. Thanks 💯%
Thank you for watching, and the comment!
Excellent video , straight yo the point!!
Not at all a hard to do job, but I can imagine it would look intimidating to many people.
This is gold! Thanks so much! 🙏🚗👍
Thanks for watching from Florida!
Nicely done, sir!
A simple job that most anyone can do themselves. (provided the tools and knowhow)
Thanks a lot for taking the time to put this up replacing both my front Axels on my 98 corolla today
Good luck and use caution when prying the axles out. Someone pulling LIGHTLY will help. If that doesn't work... ADD striking the end of the pry bar while prying almost always wins the battle.
Edit: be super careful to not damage the axle seal or the transmission case..
@@HouseCallAutoRepair thanks I really appreciate that a lot, will do
@@HouseCallAutoRepair I got the passenger side cv axel out no prob but I got new seals because it looked like oil was everywhere at the base. Have any tips or tricks on getting the seal out?
Well done!! Also nice camera angles
Thank you!
Even though I forget to un-zoom on occasion, I try to get the camera the best view I can without creating conflict.
This video has helped me a lot thank you
I'm glad you found it helpful!
Thankyou !so simple but good video
Simple job....unless the axle doesn't want to let go...
You make it look so easy man!!
Most of the time, they are fairly easy....
Thanks a lot for da video, much appriciated.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video it was very helpful
Glad it helped!
So beautiful!
Thanks!
tore the inner boot when changing struts being careless, one tip for removing the axel I used a ball joint separator. you can shove it up the from the bottom then I just hit that with a 2lb sledge. I also forgot to put down a catch pan and made a huge mess... I'm here because I can't get the axel back in and of course you made it look easy so back to struggling with it. thanks for the video!
First make sure the end going in is exactly the same as what came out. (dia., #of splines length, etc. Once you're sure they're a match, push the axle back in as far as you can, then pull back about 1 inch (25mm), slam it back in. That'll usually work. Also a good idea to coat it with a little grease first, and rotate it while seating it.
Hell ya right to the point no bs love it
I'm definitely not an entertainer, but trying to put out helpful content.
Great video. Thanks.
Glad you liked it!
Your the best ever. God bless..
Glad you liked it!
Thanks !
Thanks for stopping by!
i found a fork that goes on a slide hammer that fits behind the axle and you hit the slide hammer comes out real easy especially where its hard to get in to hit or doesn't have the cutout got it at Oreilly
I have yet to purchase one...
I have a 02 Corolla, cooling fans only work on low speeds with the a/c on causing the a/c not to cool when idling, when the a/c is off both fans come on high speeds to cool the radiator when idling, in the past, both fans used to run full speed with the a/c on, I even hosed off the condenser, any idea's
I'd suspect a wiring issue, or bad relay control.
Just to ask. Do you know where to find a CV axle for the passenger side for this year.(CE model if that means anything) I have replace the driver side one and now looking for the other side and cant seem to find any with the dynamic balancer on it.
Aside from factory original, I don't think any aftermarket half shafts have balancers... Can't say I've ever come across one. Unless you're travelling at really high speed, it shouldn't make any noticeable difference.
Hi, question; how much gearbox oil comes out when you pull the shaft out? Do you drain the gearbox first or is this not needed? Thanks!
If the gearbox was filled correctly, very little should come out. (Proper level is USUALLY right to the BOTTOM of the seals, not above, or measurably below)
What did you torque the CV axle bolts to? I ask because I'm doing my front two this Saturday. However I've gotten everything from. "The nut on the spindle should be tightened until snug, with no side-to-side play in the hub and then backed off slightly, about maybe a 1/8 of a turn." To 159 lb to 180 lb of torque for the bolts. Could someone please clarify.
Unfortunately this information is often difficult to find (without a monthly premium)
Torque puts a "preload" on the bearing. Too tight causes crushing and premature failure, and too looses causes play and premature failure.
ASK the manufacturer of the part, what their recommendation is. (I do NOT have access to this information without hunting for it,)
@@HouseCallAutoRepair Understanderable and thank you.
Brah, I f-ing killed it. I ended dropping the trans pan too. I replaced the filter, trans fluid and gasket. No leaks and I think I'ma replace my pcv valve today and gasket. Thank you for the vid. It made replacing the CV axles so f-ing easy. Thing is running in beast mode now. You da man! 🤘🤓
What did you do to loosen the CV shaft
get behind the inner CV and strike the end of a bar that is pushing the CV away from the transmission.
Did it eventually need a inner cv joint replacement ? I replaced my cv joints and now the middle shakes like crazy and it turns out there’s a inner joint. I’m gonna get it replaced soon !
I NEVER bother with rebuilding the CV Joints. I also don't waste the time and money to reboot any either. They're USUALLY cheaper to just replace the whole half shaft as a complete assembly.
I replaced the whole unit.
@@HouseCallAutoRepair thank you for the advice ! I had both my cv axles assembly replaced but where they connect in the middle makes a thud sound when driving and it got worse over time. I’m not sure what’s wrong but I think it might be my transmission shaking. Again thank you for the advice, I hope to save enough to fix whatever is wrong with this old reliable😳🤦🏽♂️
@@HurtsEnd The symptoms you describe, sound to me like one of the three roller bearing inside the INNER hub of the axle, may have shattered or fallen apart, essentially throwing the whole axle shaft out of whack.
With the drive wheels off the ground and the vehicle secured from moving,, with the engine running, put it in gear and watch the axles rotate. look close to the hub for movement that is NOT on a constant axis. (wobbling) Anything more than just a bit of wobble, I'd recommend removal and inspection of the rollers
Was that car a automatic? Great video
Automatic
Where did u buy the axle from cause i need one ASAP
The local auto parts store had it in stock.
@@HouseCallAutoRepair oowh okay cause i need one bad u know but i cant seem to find it anywhere
What brand axle did you use?
i don't have any idea. The owner purchased it, and it matched, so in it went. lol
Do you need an alignment after this
You really shouldn't need to, unless you did something that changed the orientation of a part. It wouldn't hurt to get it checked though....
@@HouseCallAutoRepair thanks
Would a 2001 be the same as the 98
I believe that to be the case.
hello im going to do this tomorrow i just need to buy the tools?
Good luck with the process. The hardest part is getting the axle out of the transmission. (there are tools available to make that very easy)
i cant get to my notch and pop it off :(
A little outward pressure, and then impact... that usually does it.
@@HouseCallAutoRepair I actually managed to get it off!! A little impact did help!
Toyotas run forever. Most of your American made cars would wear out before having to do an axle change.
No matter the make, the two leading vehicle killers are lack of maintenance, and climate affects. Different climates, have different casualties.
