    I never thought a dog would mirror my personality as much as a greyhound. We're adopting one in a few weeks and these dogs are truly different from any other breed. When I was a teenager, I moved into a home that wasn't my own and was sorrowful but didn't show it externally. The family greyhound used to get up on this tiny twin bed and slept by my side every single night. The owners said that she had never done that with them and were baffled by it. Many years later she passed away but she left me with a strong love for greyhounds.

    Gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ps. we have had 17 ex-racer Greys. They do beautifully in apartments! Greyhounds love to lounge - and be quiet and hang out with their person. They are known as "couch potatoes" and do just fine going for little walks-they do NOT need a yard and lots of space. Jenny- use a very light witch hazel ( l like the rose scented ) and do a quick little wipe with a face pad in her ears, every few days (and a another little pad to ensure her ears are fully dry). ps. to newbie Grey owners - its a good idea to have a few carpet runners placed around your home - to ensure your Grey doesn't slip. And be patient...they will become acclimated to their new lives, quite quickly ie stairs etc. Not all want to meet other dogs either - they just want to be with their person. That is OK...just let them be, who they are :) And ensure you have a Veterinarian that is savvy with sighthounds and their needs - with medications and anesthetics (it is a little different than non sighthounds).

    Greyhounds are one of the few large breeds suited for small home/condo/apt living. They sleep 16-18 hrs a day due to their high metabolism. Even at their racing peak hounds only run 2 races a week. They just chill out snoozing together as a pack between turn outs and runs. They are clean, low shedding dogs. We’ve had nothing but retired racers for 23 years. They are really gentle, polite dogs. My 95 lb boy Archibald is asleep in my lap now. He failed his maiden class races & retired at just 20 months old. He 3 now and excels at command training. He has learned 12 verbal commands and 6 sign language commands. I’m home bound awaiting a kidney transplant and he is absolutely wonderful company. We’ve like the XL goofy boys and love their sweet, chilled out temperament.

    Such a lovely intro to greyt life! Daphne is adorable, another thing I used to find with greyhounds in apartments is their not seeming to need overnight pee journeys downstairs. Thank you for the info. I’ve had whippets for 30 years but I live near a greyhound rescue group. I’ve been watching videos and talking to friends for comparisons of the two breeds. I’m retired and the cost of a whippet puppy seems too much for me when I can rescue a dog and give it a good home. I would prefer to put that money into the dog’s care. I want a walking companion. I live near two parks, some light hiking trails, and a dog park, so I think I can find plenty of places for my new friend to exercise.

  • @MrMallorcaboy
    @MrMallorcaboy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    also dont let a greyhound off the lead without a muzzle or if not in an enclosed place, they can and will kill small animals or runaway and get lost or killed on the road. 2 runs a day being out for 20 minutes is enough excercise.but dont go far or you might need to carry it home, they have little stamina.

  • @Trilliano

    Just so you guys know. Dogs don’t need a backyard that’s a stupid statement. And actually apartment dogs are more stable and stimulated than “house, backyard” dogs because they have to go outside. Just provide for their needs and you’ll be fine.

      The adjustment period from kennel to home can result in some upset tummies for sure. Plain yogurt helps with the gas (mix it with the food or mine lick it off a spoon as a treat), as does cooked pumpkin or butternut squash. Neither of my hounds tolerate Greenies very well (more than a few pukey moments), but Milkbone has brushing chews that are green, and help with the breath a lot and they tolerate.
