    Oh, and you'd better be prepared to cuddle.

    Everything they say here about greyhounds is true. Mine used his paw to pet ME!!! Lovely gentle, sweet presence in the house. Watched TV and listened to music. On occasion he would sing with Enya. Extremely intuitive animal, a pleasure to live with. On top of everything else the breed is naturally elegant and poised as no other breed. Subtly, silently a greyhound will steal your heart.

    This is great but the Greyhound racing industry generates huge numbers of beautiful dogs that end up with a bullet in their head because they don't meet their trainers expectations. Sure adopt a Greyhound but also lobby to have the racing industry severely scrutinised for the treatment of these beautiful animals.

      Sadly, money talks and greases the palms of policy makers. As long as the racing industry is profitable (it is on the decline), there will be dog racing. Public pressure could change that, but most people don't care about issues that don't affect them directly. Humans can be selfish like that!

    i had a greyhound for 9 years; I got him when he was retired at 5 years old and we became best friends. That friendship lasted over miles of walks, flying and sailing AND he was a couch potato who never smelled 'doggy' or barked. Dash was my best friend, in the retrospect of my life. He loved my kids. He quietly, was very respectful around other dogs and only growled once that I can remember when a little *shole dog keep getting into his dish at feeding time.
    The only criticism was that his need to take a huge dump (twice per day because their speed is fed by a very healthy appetite). I loved my dog so much, I am reluctant to even try again because it hurt so bad when I lost him. My son and I buried our friend at sea while aboard our 42 ft sailboat. He lived on board, in his own berth. He didn't particularly care for sailing but loved the hell out flying, especially the landings...
    My favorite story about Dash no pun intended - he was named after a character I wrote for a short book about adventure); anyway, we were going for one of our walks when he blasted after a jack rabbit.
    Normally a big jack will run in an arc to get back to his hole. Well, this time, 'ol jack kept running in a straight line down this soft dirt road. They looked like two small pickup trucks tearing up the countryside. After about 100 to 150 yds, Jack looks up at this stranger pacing him, at top speed, and Dash looked back at him. Heh, that literally scared him to death and he died right then and there like a blown out tire.. Dash just sniffed him and tired as hell, slowly trotted back home. I felt bad for jack but it WAS funny.

      kess mcc i adore greyhounds. We usually have their smaller cousin, whippets. My last beautiful whippy boy we rehomed was exactly the same quiet, dignified personality as a greyhound. Everybody loved him straight away. He was beautiful to live with. Can't wait to see him again. My present whippy's are crossed with a greyhound, so they are smaller, but you can see the greyhound in them, esp the boy, who is so calm and dignified. Beautiful dogs. I think, personally, that you can't beat a greyhound.

    Important points people should know if adopting a ex racing greyhound, because many get sent back way too soon.
    1. As they have never lived in a home you must give them around 12 months to settle in. They can protest wee in the house but this will stop as soon as they realise this is their forever home and you always come back.
    2. Some dogs were trained to chase live prey so if its furry and moves then its prey. Remember its instinct to a greyhound as they are prey driven.
    3. Some greyhounds are aggressive to all other breeds of dog except sight hounds so for this reason and point 2 you should muzzle them especially if off the lead.
    4. Be careful waking them up as they can snap although not bite. They can be asleep with eyes slightly open so make sure to make a loud noise to wake them up rather than a stroke. Again eventually after a while this really does get better to the point you could probably stroke them while asleep but remember the saying..."let sleeping dogs lie"
    5. Keep food out of the way as before you know it its in their mouth and they can eat odd things, ours ate a candle once!
    6. If you let them off the lead make sure they are good with recall and take plenty of treats because in a straight line they can hit 50mph in a blink of an eye. One minute they are there, 2 seconds later they are gone! Before you know it they are over half a mile away.
    7. Due to them having clear sight for up to a mile away they will see things you can not so its quite normal for them to act like they are seeing ghosts!
    Do not let the above put you off as they are the greatest companion you could ever wish for :)

      It doesn't take them 12 months to adjust. That is bull crap. They adjust very quickly, some in a few days, others in a few months, but never a year. Greyhounds are not trained to chase live prey. Here in the USA it is illegal to use live prey and has been for over 20 years. Greyhounds can get along just fine with smaller dogs, cats and even rabbits. They are not aggressive to other dogs. Greyhounds have been around other breed dogs in the farms and at the kennels. They will bond nicely with other dogs in the home and most will just walk away from other dogs on walks. You have a lot to learn about greyhounds.

    • @kengelina
      @kengelina 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of this is spot on - I’m two weeks into fostering and my girl is 3. She has a LOT of energy and even with 3 walks a day, sometimes she still has loony, barking moments. She often freezes on her lead when other dogs approach or pass by - she also goes for some small dogs and I have to pull her back. She isn’t fully toilet trained and she gets sleep startle. All of that being said, she is a beautiful dog with a lovely nature. Make no mistake, taking in an ex racer can be very hard work. It’s entirely worth it though.

    • @momtoty
      @momtoty 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kengelina Greyhounds aren't hard work at all. They adjust quickly and are very happy to just lounge around the house and sleep most of the day. Toilet training should be easy and they should know by a few days not to potty in the house. All of my greyhounds and all of my fosters through the years were house trained in 2 or 3 days, some the very 1st day. Greyhounds are the easiest breed to own, very laid back and very smart. They learn quickly.

    I just LOVE these dogs. I fostered Nelson 3 years ago, he is a greyhound. I have grown up with my family always having a family dog, all breeds but never a greyhound. My children grew up with a beautiful Collie mix who was wonderful. When Nelson arrived I did not know just how quickly he would steal all of our hearts. He is the sweetest, calming , loyal, funny, lazy and did I say funny☺ loving, intelligent dog I have ever gotten to know. I would love to get another (and who knows I might) as I have heard two keep each other company and they love the company of another dog. Anyway if anyone is considering this breed, be warned they are addictive and will win you over before you can say - GREYHOUND- ☺ I said I would foster Nelson for a week, 3 years later and he is still here and very much a family member. I fought it for at least a minute, but he had me and my family within a short time of being in our home. Good luck to anyone thinking of re-homing a greyhound, you are in for a treat.

      Most greyhounds don't have health issues, they're relatively healthy dogs, but because of the race tracks some dogs have injuries that can result into future health problems. Our dog Rudy died from cancer due to his broken leg and the steroids and other drugs they gave them to preform well on the track. Not all information is accurate. Also, they are sensitive to anesthesia because a majority of them do not have enough fat. And skin tags, because of their thin skin.
      Also, this is a video from another country.
      They bred them to race and it's a horrific industry. They need to end greyhound racing. :(

    LOL the lady @ 3:26. Her greyhounds are not struggling to make it home after 25 minutes because they are lazy but rather they are dragging their asses to make the walk last longer. Mine had all kinds of tricks to do this even after miles of hiking. She would stop and sniff EVERYTHING every few feet near the end or she would walk reeeeally slooooow and I'd have to keep stopping to let her catch up or she would pretend to not see or hear me and just keep walking. When I first got her I thought I was over doing it on the trails because she walked so much slower on the way back but nope, It was just her being crafty :)

    i was always in love with this breed as well as most all dogs, but i always shied away from a greyhound because i was under the idea that i would need loads of house space inside and out...but watching all these videos, i see that they really don't need a lot of inside house area ie: large rooms.. just a nice big couch or bed to call their own, and then a good walk or jog each day at the park.. now i am loving me some greyhound snuggles...

    The reason greyhounds are so incredible is because racers care more about health than beauty. My concern is that the Florida ban will eventually lead greyhounds to the show dog corruption that has destroyed so many wonderful breeds( Eng. Bulldog, Fr bulldog, pug, pekingese, German shepherd, Cav, golden retriever, Great Dane off the top of my head)

    • @zoethezoologist4391
      @zoethezoologist4391 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's an interesting point, however, although many breeds suffer from bad breeding and show dog standards, there are many breeders who breed for health and temperament in pedigrees. All it takes is one look at a working line of German shepherds vs a show line to probe the difference. Greyhounds will continue as a healthy breed when tracks and racing shut down, theres such a loyal sighthound community who love the breed, they wouldn't let it die out or become deformed by bad breeding.

There was a local organization here in northern Indiana that took in those dogs and adopted them out. They were so great at working with us to find the right dog for us. We've had our lovely girl for almost 4 years and she turns 8 years old in September of this year. I really don't think I'd adopt a different breed. Especially since there are still plenty of greyhounds out there looking for forever homes.

      Florida greyhounds are being taken all across the country for adoption... all are OK and none are in danger nor were they. The Greyhound racing community takes care of them. They, with adoption groups, and owners brought them across state lines this spring, in the height of COVID19 shutdowns, to their groups to find homes. Where were the "Protect Dogs activists?" No where! I knew they would vanish. That always happens. They claim cruelty, they claim they are the saviors and then they ride off into the sunset when they get their way. Those who work with greyhounds and love them are who help, but we didn't have $4 million for negative ads to be heard by Floridians. I used to believe activists, until I went about learning how greyhounds are raised and treated before they grace our couches. I have been adopting and volunteering since 1993 and can honestly tell you these people love their dogs and the voters of Florida allowed themselves to believe false propaganda that election. I am disgusted. Whatever country this video was made in, please go see for yourselves and meet the people of racing like I did. You may be pleasantly surprised.

    I have rescued Irish Greyhound (Fergus). They make the best house Pet's of all the breeds, unless you want a gaurd Dog. They are very sociable, calm, gracious, un-demanding, lazy, loving, elegant and noble who don't bark very much, don't shed so much, don't have a Doggy smell at all. very clean and low maintenance.as they don't have any problem with their joints or heart problems. I recommend anyone to rescue this beautiful unique breed of Dog. get two, just as easy as one and they are company for each other if you have to be out all day. Low energy Dog's so if you don't like long walks the Greyhound is perfect. They don't like to go out in wet weather either, if they don't have to. They do need a very soft warm bed(sofa) to lie on as they sleep about 20 hours a day. GREYHOUNDS ARE GREAT!

    Adopted 2 sisters greyhound from Florida. I am in Canada so I was worried about our tough winters but with a good warm coat, tuque (hat) and boots, both are fine with the Canadian cold. However, they would rather stay inside during our torrid summers as they do not tolerate the humid heat.
    Terribly affectionate and chatty. Very food driven , quite stubborn. They are like cats: they love sleeping all day. Do not like long walks. And my they do shed during the summer. I vacuum every second day!
    They are kind and calm....except when their meal takes too long to be served! I get an earful.
    Love them to bits.

    We adopted our first 22 years ago and hopefully will never have anything but greys if we can still find them in the US. They are the sweetest and such easy going dogs. They are gentle and very adaptable to different types of homes. They love to sleep 18-20 hrs a day but get their exercise in occasionally sprints and short walks.

    I work harder now, like really putting in hours, so that one day I can have a small bit of property to adopt a greyhound. Real story, I was afraid of dogs, terrified of larger ones, until I was fourteen and I met Ernie the big old greyhound. Never have I met a more sweet, goofy, just purely awesome animal, and i fell completely in love. I can now say with confidence that I am an avowed dog person, in the sense that I can't encounter any dog without doing the baby voice and giving them pats and belly rubs. That has had mixed results with police dogs, but overall, Ernie was an ambassador for dogs everywhere and should be praised.

    I grew up with a Lurcher (greyhound collie mix) but she looked like a pure greyhound. She was so lovely, except for her tendency to fall asleep behind closed doors so going from room to room you had to tenderly open the door to see if she was there lol.

Although 3 isn't suitable for us which I'm glad the rescue Is honest about, there's one beautiful girl Grace although someone is seeing her before us. If they don't reserve her then we're next to visit her, so will have to wait and see. If Grace gets taken then soon the rescue Is getting more in and they'll arrange a day for us to visit them. Have you got a grey yet?

    I don't know if the stereotype is the same outside of the US (I've personally never heard of them being supposedly angry dogs until now surprisingly) but a lot of people here assume that they're high-strung and overly skittish. I've seen some nervous Italian greyhounds, but I don't know how people see the standards as shaking balls of frayed nerves. Every one I've had the pleasure to meet has been either reserved but confident or very friendly and eager to meet people.

      I totally agree with. you. They can come across as being a bit aloof but they absolutely love people and have NEVER known a GH to show aggression towards humans. My Irish GH is off lead all the time on walks and gets on with every single Dog he meets. If another Dog shows any aggression towards him he just ignores it and walks away. They are not built for Dog fights that's for sure. Flight is their only weapon against aggressive Dog's. No other Dog can outrun them. GO FERGUS!
