Not getting UCAs to better my alignment on my new lift. Went through those brand new tires so fast 😔 Also, not installing my shock bushings in the correct order. Lmao
My mistakes, oh boy (In no specific order) 1) bought a wrx 2) changed the wheels and accidentally drove on hand tightened lugs which shot off like a rocket as I was going 20mph down my street. 3) I had an eBay hub loosen up at a drift event, torque everything down properly gentlemen 4) plastidipped parts with zero prep work or cleaning before hand 5) thought 40k springs and shocks would be good for racing (more stiff= less body roll?) that sucked 6) thought I could vinyl wrap a car by myself and it would look perfect (overstretched everything and it was pretty bad) 7) bought a Miata and slapped on some hella stretched tires and went autocrossing (195 on a 9” rim, fitmint was still trash, got weird looks and tech thought I might debead) 8) didn’t realize you have to switch cam and crank gears on a JDM EJ205 motor to make it work with your USDM ECU (yeah it took me over a year to swap this motor) 9) 3k miles later blew the 02 wrx Subaru trans because I clutch dropped at like 5k rpms 10) dropped the oil drain bolt in my oil bucket pan thing which cloggged it and spilt hot oil all over my garage 11) I have defiantly open the rad cap while it was way too hot 12) did a track day on bald, 300 treadware all seasons at 40psi 13) took me 15 hours to 6 speed swap my miata and we finished late so I forgot to fully tighten a ppf bolt which dropped out and snapped as I was going 50mph, shot sparks everywhere lol I thought I ran over a chain 14) I had my starter go out on my only vehicle at the time and thought I could just clutch start it everywhere, got stuck multiple times. Learn from me, don’t make the stupid mistakes I do
I bought a 1988 Camaro IROC-Z that was carburetor swapped, had no ECU, No cats or mufflers, and had a little bit of rust forming. At 17 years old I thought I could fix it. Sold, my daily driver and drove that for three months. Worst memory was not having working windshield wipers and driving to school in the pouring rain. Wiping the windshield with an old rag as I drove down the street. Fun times.
Rookie mistakes maintaining your car: buying a car that has more maintenance needs than you are capable of paying for/performing yourself. Looking at you all you people that buy 10+ year old BMW M cars.
I have 95 bmw 740i and i tune it my self everything from mapping to chip tuning and I also rebuild everything my self and she runs like beauty never gotten an engine light
@@z-trip5457 nah man, I still have it lol. I actually just got it about a month ago. I'm still learning bits here and there, but I've always been in love with the FD RX-7, so getting an RX-8 was something I've been considering ever since I got my license.
Basically, no car will be a mistake if you do your homework. I'll say that out front. If you know what you're going into, and you have a better understanding of what common problems with the car are, you'll be better set. Look on forums, try and find someone in your community who has one and just pick their brains about the car. I love my RX8, I dont drive it super hard and if I do it's only for a short time and on roads I know and am comfortable on. Below is some stuff I've found online and my own experience with the car. (04 RX8, JM1FE) Being a rotary engine, you'll come across a different maintenance schedule than most traditional piston motors. Plan on adding a bunch of oil, (I always carry a few extra quarts to top off) spending $20-$30 per spark plug every 15k miles, (and also paying attention that you are buying leading AND trailing plugs for each rotor, I just changed mine yesterday and the previous owner had 4 leading plugs in there). Another issue, at least for the series 1 (04-08) is the starter, it doesn't like to start hot. Another issue I just had (maybe related to the starter, or poor compression or a combo of both) was I was on the highway, waiting to pull across in the middle lane turn off. I decided to try and beat a tractor trailer, and being new to driving stick, I stalled it. No biggie, I've stalled before, I'll just wait for the next red light to stop traffic. Well my car wouldn't even crank. I would turn the key and the dash lights were so faint, the brake was sunk to the floor. I had no idea what happened. I got lucky and someone helped push it off the road, go pulled into a parking lot, and looked over the car. Didnt really see anything, so I decided to try starting it up after going inside the store and letting the car (and my head) cool down. After about 5 seconds of cranking it finally took and I was able to finish about my business, no issues at all. Back to the oil topic, premixing is a big thing people generally talk about. I don't, but that might be why I had that issue. I'm not sure, I've only had the car a month lol.
a while back, me and my buddy tried to swap an alternator on his mk4 jetta. we were both around 15/16 years old and it was his first car, so needless to say we had pretty much never done anything mechanical on a vehicle before. we tried EVERYTHING to get the belt off of the alternator, we tried pulling the belt off with brute force, adding leverage, we even tried removing the tensioner but it wouldnt budge. took us about 3 hours before we looked it up and realized the tensioner is spring loaded... there was even a small tab on the tensioner where you use a wrench of some kind to pull it back so the belt can come off 😂 swapped out the alternator, put the belt back on and everything worked great. it was definitely a learning experience to say the least

Wow, Imma trucker so I was getting my 45 minutes break. A subbie passed by with one hell of an exhaust note. Very deep, not overly loud and with that unequal length header sound to it. 10/10 it chopped!
Did my first oil change 10 years ago, had a buddy start the engine and oil shit everywhere. I thought something blew up, but no. Ya boi forgot to put on the new oil filter.
Just recently I got some suspension and wheels from yall and installed them. Then the excitement got to me and I forgot to torque the lugs. I was driving with hand tightened lugs on my wheels…
Love your videos! At a young age, ehem. I may have neglected to install inner bearings on the 2 front brake rotors. Needless to say, all of the components needed to be replaced again. FYI, I brought it to a shop and paid them at that point.
@Sam Ouzounian I've got a 2013 that I picked up in January with 27k I just hit 60K and I've had a smog light bank 1 sensor 1 I just needed day off to change it.
@Sam Ouzounian Mk7 GTI needs some love to keep running properly but if you take care of it the car will definitely take care of you. Its a labor of love for me because I love that car almost as much as my own children 💘
My biggest- overtightening pcv valve....when the time came to replace I sheared it off and a piece fell into a baffled section....head to take apart the top of the car to get the valve cover off, then spent hours trying to macguyver a vacuum solution to get the small brass fitting out.....15 min job turned into a weekend of BS...oh and found out I can't trust my torque wrench at the bottom end (6lbs) sheared a valve cover bolt........good times....
I stuck a curve pipe, maf sensor and a filter as my "cold air intake" years ago. I successfully created the opposite since the filter ended up directly in line with the side of the engine and over a header. Pointless stuff is pointless.
rookie mistake on my old 87 Porsche 944. Doing a tire rotation at home as we have a small lift and my friends that were over told me they’d finish it for me so I could go eat, figured oh that’s fine they’re smart they know what they’re doing. Turns out they only hand tightened all the lugs, no torque. Worst part was we went on a long cruise right after. Safe to say going 80mph on the highway with hand tightened wheels is not a fun experience. Thankfully had my spare tire kit in my car so as soon as I knew what was going on I pulled over and tightened all my wheels down before I could be home to re torque them down...always double check everyone people.
I’m a soon to be mechanic and has worked as an apprentice at a Volvo and Renault authorized shop/garage/dealership what ever you want to call it. I have some experience with servicing Volvo’s, mostly the 5-cylinders (diesels and petrol), 4-cylinder Peugeot diesels and all VEA 4 cylinders. I found this video very amusing, as i not to long ago bought my first car.
Rookie mistake I made was not torquing my caliper bolts down enough and almost lost my caliper a few days later. Luckily had my socket set on me to do roadside tighten
My first car mistake: Buying a VW and not doing bags and wheels first. Went fbo and got it tuned just for the trans to blow up. Pretty sure the car just wanted to kill itself for having monster truck fitment on the stock wheels for so long.
Didnt use a timing gun and to thick oil after engine swap. Spun a bearing after 300 KM, on the 3e engine after a few weeks xD. Forgotten a suspention bold. Best way to learn is by failing
Not allowing enough time for a maintenance session, because you are going to have to go back to get more supplies. On a positive note the whole under body is happier because last weekend I got a bunch of new screws/fasteners that were missing from the underbelly pan. BTW having a good service manual for your car is worth it. You can find everything in one place, every torque spec, wiring diagram... and publishers like Chilton or Bentley have accompanying web sites with updates to the manuals.
my rookie mistake was draining all my oil out then couldn’t get the oil filter off and i didn’t wanna reuse the filter so i had to push my brothers car into a parking lot then buy a oil filter remover tool
Worth the read, lesson learned😂 buy a subaru they said. Itll be fun they said...Wanted to cut corners on my 6 speed swapped 05 wrx. Payed $600 to have sti hubs machined to fit my wrx knuckles (thinking everything on the internet was true) so i could run sti axles. 4 days later (not even 100 miles) my rear hubs separated from my knuckle giving me a good 20 degrees of camber. Finally saved up enough to do full brembo/sti knuckle swap. Bought it off ebay ($1500) when delivered i only received the rear knuckles and brembos.after cutting away the shrink wrap the inly protection in packaging was some floor mats from the 70s so the paint got all screwed up. One month later and i still havent gotten the front breaks yet bc the shipping company lost them. I havent had my car drivable in over 6 months. Sos plez help
You forgot basic fluid changes like transmission, power steering, brake, and coolant. People think they're either too expensive and/or not needed so they don't do them.
If youre gonna do your own maintenance, fork out the additional cash for the mechanics manual for your specific model of car, theyre digital, they have EVERYTHING you need from the tiniest little bolts torque specs to the parts numbers for any special tools that are required (VW LOVE their special tools)
My rookie mistake was to swap to LED headlight bulbs and then the lights were dim to no end. They looked pretty at least. Still have the picture of the non blinding high beam because reflectors and bad LED position
So far my biggest rookie mistake is buying cheap tires. I bought a no brand name set in an attempt to save some money and my experience has been terrible. Vague feel, less grip and more road noise. Now I have to spend extra to get new tires when I could've just done it right the first time.
The biggest mistake I see people make is not changing fluids often enough, people tend to change the oil somewhat regularly but not changing the coolant can start to cause issues after a while. The biggest mistake I have made is ignoring brake noises on my last car, instead of doing a brake job right away I decided to wait a few weeks which caused my wheels to get a nice coating of metal which rusted and I was never able to get that off of the wheels. So now if I hear brake noises I check it out right away.
My most recent rookie mistake...i replaced the radiator in my e46. Thinking I knew what I was doing I didn't install the expansion tank properly. The belt cut into the tank and my rookie mistake cost me $80. Not a fun day :(
A good one. I was changing my break calipers, and turned the bolt for my caliper the wrong way with a breaker bar and stripped it completely. Worst part is it’s one of those gm flush mounted Allen bolts.
1)Replaced my brake pads and rotors outside in the parking lot of my apartment complex. Lost one of the bolts connecting the brake knuckle and caliper. Everytime I braked the caliper assembly/brake pad would get pushed off the rotor and scraped the inside of my wheels. Braking was less than optimal. 2) Hadn't changed oil in ages and accelerated like a madman. I let it get down to about 2quarts of oil . . . thank goodness it was a Toyota. LESSON LEARNED!
Um, as a vw owner, I’m guilty. Just got a new mk4 gti with some “work done” and little did I know it had 7 very catastrophic engine codes that it threw off😂
Few other rookie mistakes that come to my mind are: - Top you gas tank while filing it up - Stop when the pump stops, - Changing oil too late or using the wrong oil type, - Not balancing/align yours wheels, - Ignoring the engine light on the dash, - Not owing an OBD scanner that can help you avoid huge mechanic bills for "replacing a fuse", - Getting the engine rpm to the red-line at all the time!
My e36 does not like synthetic oil at all. That shit gets thin immediately. I use Valvoline Conventional 10w-40 with Lucas high mileage engine oil additive. My Vanos is still alive.
That's because it's an old car. Old cars do not like synthetic oils, because they were built long before synthetics became a thing. They are made differently, and the years and years of wesr and tear has made them not being able to adjust to change.
replacing my output shaft seal on a camaro and letting the exhaust dangle for a couple days...Finally get the right seal and install everything smoothly to notice an exhaust rattle -.- Fixed it with some washers though
Rookie mistake not doing diff flush and transmission flush on my IS350 leading to having metal shavings in the rear diff and needing to replace the transmission solenoids, bought my second IS350 these 2 were the first things I did to it.
He says it repeatedly! The three basics of all car modifications for a good start on a build. Intakes, headers and exhausts Or was it Bumpers, wings and stickers?
Some of my rookie mistakes: Not changing drag plug gasket on audi - oil everywhere Not wearing a raincoat when removing VW filter housing - oil everywhere, had to trash my soaked tshirt Not double-checking wiring order on a distributor (had 8&5 swapped) snapping a shock on a lexus glove compartment (wouldn't go back on) Not holding the air ratchet tightly (almost broke my finger as it smacked against the A-arm) Signing up a customer for an oil change on a fully loaded day P.S: Do you really have to torque everything down to spec? I've been taught to go by the feel.
It depends where the bolt goes Normally if you tighten up a bolt it won't go anywhere But if a bolt goes into aluminum make sure tto torque it up to spec! (learned that the hard way by almost loosing my front lower control arm)
My biggest rookie mistake was buying an AW11 as my first car with no mechanic knowledge or experience and then learning how much of a pain in the ass it is to own a mid engine car. Also when I took the airbox off of my civic I found my 10mm socket inside the baffle behind the bumper.
Rookie mistake: doing a valve adjustment on my e30 after semi paying attention to a video 2: trying to boost my e30 with 1k and 3 weeks before an event (car didnt make it amd now I cant diag the damn thing to start?
I forgot to tighten a timing pulley bolt up once, got side tracked with a bolt load of other cars (this one was my own personal car) thought I finished it, went out (car started and drove fine believe it or not) then started beating it a bit, pulley came off, bent all the valves, smashed pistons to crap and snapped the bottom pulley clean off the crank, lucky enough it was a cheap engine to buy...... I've learnt you can never check your work enough times. I check everything at least 4 times now before saying it's complete, check everything is torqued correctly and sorted.
Drove around for a good week with the ECU light on thinking it was just because I fitted a cold air intake... turns out the jubilee clip had stripped and the filter had come off the throttle body 🙄🙄
I still don’t know where a long thin bolt goes on my rsx, i was fixing a tonne of stuff on it, put everything back right except this on bolt. Pisses me off
First time I ever changed my trucks oil I struggled with a stuck oil filter. Got it off but didn't realize the o ring stayed on the block. Put new oil filter on and put oil. Turned the car on and made a huge mess on my freshly paved street

Leonardo Reyes i have a 2012 gti thats never had a light on before am I special
@@yungbg7531 I believe you maybe....

7:30 heyyy that's my Mustang 😋
I’m a soon to be mechanic and has worked as an apprentice at a Volvo and Renault authorized shop/garage/dealership what ever you want to call it. I have some experience with servicing Volvo’s, mostly the 5-cylinders (diesels and petrol), 4-cylinder Peugeot diesels and all VEA 4 cylinders.
I found this video very amusing, as i not to long ago bought my first car.
while cleaning the engine bay up I disconnected the Hood latch wire to clean around it and forgot to reconnect it before i closed the hood...
I chose a Japanese gm mix to start to learn how to work on vehicles. Big leap forward but man I've made some fun mistakes and learned alot.
Got a new battery, had terminals reversed from original. Fried an alternator an an 80' MGB. Fortunately that's all. had a new one in in no time.
Rookie mistake I made was not torquing my caliper bolts down enough and almost lost my caliper a few days later. Luckily had my socket set on me to do roadside tighten
Alex: There’s no intro.
Editor: Hold my beer.
My first car mistake:
Buying a VW and not doing bags and wheels first. Went fbo and got it tuned just for the trans to blow up. Pretty sure the car just wanted to kill itself for having monster truck fitment on the stock wheels for so long.
Buying a 1999 Camaro as a project car that barely ran as I’ve never worked on a car before in my life other than an oil change.
You can find everything in one place, every torque spec, wiring diagram... and publishers like Chilton or Bentley have accompanying web sites with updates to the manuals.
my rookie mistake was draining all my oil out then couldn’t get the oil filter off and i didn’t wanna reuse the filter so i had to push my brothers car into a parking lot then buy a oil filter remover tool
amari odom me too luckily I can walk to autozone in 10 mins
Trying to reverse and test drive on wheel chocks after the job was done.
I bought my first car a 03 Nissan 350z manual. I’m ready to add some aftermarket wheels tires and suspension from fitment Industry. 😁
LETTSS GOOO! Shoot us an email sometime at shop@fitmenitndustries.com whenever you are ready!
You forgot basic fluid changes like transmission, power steering, brake, and coolant. People think they're either too expensive and/or not needed so they don't do them.
My buddy: I've never seen brakes fail with black brake fluid so I don't care
@@kylefeilmeier7261 it's not the color that necessarily matters. It's the amount of copper and/or water that's in the fluid.
Make a vidoe on good websites to buy a car from
I'd like that
The best is Autotempest, because it searches on all the sites, autotrader, eBay, Craigslist, all of them
If youre gonna do your own maintenance, fork out the additional cash for the mechanics manual for your specific model of car, theyre digital, they have EVERYTHING you need from the tiniest little bolts torque specs to the parts numbers for any special tools that are required (VW LOVE their special tools)
Listening to Scotty Kilmer... even though I continue to watch his videos AFTER taking his faulty advice.

@@klaus9939 bruh... I wish I was a student in your class because following his advice royally fucked me.
you bought a Corolla?
Woo rookie mistake...owning a 335i and waiting in maintenance Haha. You got to be on it and it will be a beast
N54?
1)Replaced my brake pads and rotors outside in the parking lot of my apartment complex. Lost one of the bolts connecting the brake knuckle and caliper. Everytime I braked the caliper assembly/brake pad would get pushed off the rotor and scraped the inside of my wheels. Braking was less than optimal.
2) Hadn't changed oil in ages and accelerated like a madman. I let it get down to about 2quarts of oil . . . thank goodness it was a Toyota.
LESSON LEARNED!
Um, as a vw owner, I’m guilty. Just got a new mk4 gti with some “work done” and little did I know it had 7 very catastrophic engine codes that it threw off😂
Brown Sugar my TDI has no EGR so it has a nice light on the dash but I don't really care seeing as i made it turn on 😂
Few other rookie mistakes that come to my mind are:
- Top you gas tank while filing it up - Stop when the pump stops,
- Changing oil too late or using the wrong oil type,
- Not balancing/align yours wheels,
- Ignoring the engine light on the dash,
- Not owing an OBD scanner that can help you avoid huge mechanic bills for "replacing a fuse",
- Getting the engine rpm to the red-line at all the time!
Didn't double check my torque spec on a cam gear and it slipped and bent a couple valves on my engine lol
Rookie mistake not doing diff flush and transmission flush on my IS350 leading to having metal shavings in the rear diff and needing to replace the transmission solenoids, bought my second IS350 these 2 were the first things I did to it.
Changed oil on my 93 Civic (3rd or 4th time changing it myself.) Engine died from oil starvation. 😣
I have an n54 335i, I’ve leaned that working on your car yourself will save you a TON!
Rookie mistake - not checking your oil between changes. Or even over/under filling. "ThAt'S gOoD eNoUgH"
Refilling windshield fluid..... When it finished raining and there where water starts and my windows were already dirty.
Soooooo what are you selling ? I didn't quite understood. Something with windows and wraps ?
dont they just paint cars? 🤔
He says it repeatedly! The three basics of all car modifications for a good start on a build.
Intakes, headers and exhausts
Or was it
Bumpers, wings and stickers?
Some of my rookie mistakes:
Not changing drag plug gasket on audi - oil everywhere
Not wearing a raincoat when removing VW filter housing - oil everywhere, had to trash my soaked tshirt
Not double-checking wiring order on a distributor (had 8&5 swapped)
snapping a shock on a lexus glove compartment (wouldn't go back on)
Not holding the air ratchet tightly (almost broke my finger as it smacked against the A-arm)
Signing up a customer for an oil change on a fully loaded day
P.S: Do you really have to torque everything down to spec? I've been taught to go by the feel.
It depends where the bolt goes
Normally if you tighten up a bolt it won't go anywhere
But if a bolt goes into aluminum make sure tto torque it up to spec!
(learned that the hard way by almost loosing my front lower control arm)
Ide say over filling on fluids is another people do when new
My biggest rookie mistake was buying an AW11 as my first car with no mechanic knowledge or experience and then learning how much of a pain in the ass it is to own a mid engine car. Also when I took the airbox off of my civic I found my 10mm socket inside the baffle behind the bumper.
"I'm looking at you Volkswagen owners."
Me:*Looks at my Golf's CEL being bright af*.
My Jetta lived with that light on, thought it came standard
@@rodneya6371 It's just a map that's messing with how rich my afr is.
Not addressing a maintenance issue because I’m going to swap/ mod/ / upgrade with aftermarket later. Later turns into stranded cause clutch.
Valve cover adjustment?
I WAS WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO
Intro feels like a linus tech tip, and this guy kinda looks like him too XD
I was listing to this vid on lunch and i got 2 12s in the back this vid has so much bass in the background music
Rookie mistake: doing a valve adjustment on my e30 after semi paying attention to a video
2: trying to boost my e30 with 1k and 3 weeks before an event (car didnt make it amd now I cant diag the damn thing to start?
I forgot to tighten a timing pulley bolt up once, got side tracked with a bolt load of other cars (this one was my own personal car) thought I finished it, went out (car started and drove fine believe it or not) then started beating it a bit, pulley came off, bent all the valves, smashed pistons to crap and snapped the bottom pulley clean off the crank, lucky enough it was a cheap engine to buy...... I've learnt you can never check your work enough times. I check everything at least 4 times now before saying it's complete, check everything is torqued correctly and sorted.
1:41 valve cover adjustment?
Drove around for a good week with the ECU light on thinking it was just because I fitted a cold air intake... turns out the jubilee clip had stripped and the filter had come off the throttle body 🙄🙄
I got an 04 civic I had a bad oil leak thought it was the rear main seal it wasn’t kept driving it now I have to get a new motor cuz if rod know
Gotta love how alexfi freestyle these videos you guys are awsome love your vids and services
The intro is good, but it’s too dramatic
