I'd love to see the results for a kyb and Monroe and Koni. Thanks for video Tristan. Super informative. I have often thought a spring and shock would be better performing, even if it didn't have 36teen adjustability.

Which is why many EG/DC Honda guys ran the OEM ITR spring/shock combo :)
EDIT: I was surprised with the AMRs, but I think it has a lifetime warranty, would be nice to do a re-test. Probably with a Koni yellow too.

Exactly - as an end user we are in the dark when it comes to shocks - just got to trust a brand - which I hate - I'm in the brakes world and many big brands are rubbish.
We need more data/dynos on shocks to make informed buying decisions.

Chris did a great job not only explaining the shock dynos and why a certain brand performed better than the other, but he stayed professional and did not bash the budget MaxpeedingRods which I think would be very easy for most people to do. That’s for this informative vid Tristan!

I have been fitting shockworks products to a customers car. I have had several cars with different coilovers but have never driven with anything like the shockworks before! Ive definately learnt from this video, i was unaware that the shock is able to give body control. I thought that was purely upto the spring and swaybars.
Thanks very much for taking the time to make this video guys.

Same! I would have liked higher spring rates for my own car. But for my customer, it was the ultimate road car setup. They dont look super flashy or anything on the outside but its the tech and RnD thats inside them is where the money is!
I do have some really weird old HKS/Kawasaki s13 coilovers with inverted tube shocks that looked like they would be good but where terrible on the road if you ever want to run another random bunch again.

Thank you guys for this test/review which is not only without any self interest but really objective, technical and really untainted results.
It seems "Made In Japan" is the best no matter the brand (Showa, Cusco, Buddy Club) or age (20 or over 30 years). I am sure KYB and Tokico would perform similarly. Safe Real value over time.
Mid range price may be a hit or miss.
Cheap is just good for stance, mild casual use and short term use.

FYI, you are better using the full trace for Force vs Velocity rather than peak values as you are in the video. This shows you the hysteresis (lag is the term the operator is using) a lot more clearly and while you can see this in the Force Displacement curves shown, really you want to use both as they allow you to look at different things (hysteresis on FV, friction in FD for example). Peaks are OK if you are trying to hide a poor dampers performance from customers(as a lot of manufacturers do) but the full trace is much more informative, especially for comparisons like this. The Maxspeedingrods dampers are both plain orifice dampers, theres no shim stack operating hence the damping is increasing with a characteristic V^2 curve (i.e. as velocity increases, damping increases with a squared law). The AMR damper is definately topping out in one direction hence the force spike at the end of stroke in one direction (you can hear that even without seeing the force spike in the graph). I work for the damper dyno manufacturers in the UK and have used Dynosoft2000/MX extensively and designed many high end dampers ;).

I just heard of "MaXpeedingrods" only a few days ago in 2023, so I'm waaaay behind this "debate" -- I remember there was a time when people used to put down the BC / Megan and other Taiwanese coilovers, but they aren't the bottom of the barrel any more with these $200-300 "eBay" coilovers, I guess... Do they even make any money off those at that price?? I'm glad I caught this video to see a variety of these to a standardized professional-grade test. Weird that AMR had some issues -- I run those w/Hyperco springs on my AW11 MR2. I have KW V3s on my other track MR2 Spyder. I've run Koni Yellows / Eibach in other street/autox cars... And on the other end of the spectrum, today I just ordered the Maxpeedingrods for my daily driver Lincoln Navigator for $300 shipped lol: I have no expectations at the price point, but they'll certainly be an improvement over the collapsed air suspension!

Dude, this was awesome info! Now I understand the difference between a good shock and a crappy one. HOWEVER!!!! You can't really perform a test like this using the method u applied. You need to test at least 2 of each brand. ie. The American model was clearly a factory defect, and IMO because of the technology (pressure, fluids, gas), it's pretty likely that there were more that underperformed or perhaps overperformed their brand just by chance. That's why you need at least 2 tests for each brand. The real lesson learned here is, you can buy good shocks and still get a bad ones and never know, sans the dissatisfaction. Looks like Quality Control is the right way to shop them out! Again, the information was fantastic! you got my sub!

The rear struts started leaking after about 5000km but I believe it may have been extended time between drives may have buggered the seals. I’ve had both rears rebuilt and the front left is leaking and knocking too. Have you dealt with these struts before as I’m keen to hear your opinion.
I’m thinking seriously about Shockworx setup for my FG GS. Good to see they performed well, though I’m also considering Bilsteins on Kings low as it’s not a track car.

I’ve found the Teins are great while they are working, in so far as they are OEM factory quiet, comfortable for the daily drive and still capable on the track for a bit of club-level shenanigans. The damping/spring rates are far from optimal for track but I’ve put down some respectable/competitive lap times on the Teins and I can “glide” over ripple strips that upset stiffer setups.
The low-km rebuilds are the biggest problem with mine, but I’m probably contributing by leaving the car for weeks at a time.

Where did you get that Multimatic dyno lol? More response doesn't always mean better. That's how you get really bad nibble. Other than looking at the curve to see if the damper is functioning as intended, you can't tell whether it's a good damper or not. So much depends on vehicle config and tuning targets. It looks like you smacked the base valve or floating piston on the AMR. As it travels from full rebound on the left to full compression on the right, the forces jump at the exact same spot and then it resumes opperation as normal. Probably will go away if you reduce the travel. But the tuner definitely knows what he's doing. His Shockworks dyno curve was beautifully shaped! Probably smooth and glides on smooth road, but kicks in the rebound control agressively, but progressively.

hey mate, just a comment re the flicker in the video. If you were unsure how to fix that/what is causing it.. it is the framerate of the camera not matching the stupid 50Hz frequency the Australian power grid uses. you won't notice it with a bulb or normal light, but with fluro's they turn on and off constantly at the 50 Hz frequency as the power grid. This means if you have the camera set to record at 30 FPS or 60 FPS it wont match the 50 Hz frequency of the fluro and cause the flicker. If you set the camera to 50 or 25 FPS that should fix the issues as it will be in sync with that 50 Hz. Sorry for the long message, just thought it may help with future content :) Loved the video great content!

I'm looking to upgrade my OEM shocks on my 2006 Acura RSX. Unfortunately Cusco's specification sheet doesn't have the DC5 compatibility. I'm looking for a premium comfort shock for daily driving. What is your recommendation? Should I write an inquiry for the Shockworks, or look into more generic brands such as BC or Tein? I'd appreciate any input, I am very new to any type mechanical modding let alone car scene thank you.

    • @TURBOTRISTO
      @TURBOTRISTO  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

if you are only wanting to upgrade the shocks with out lowering the car I would recommend some KYB SR's for the ultimate i would recommend some neo max or shockworks then something more generic i would say BC or Tein is ok but may be slightly harsh
