Just starting working in supermarket refrigeration. Feeling very overwhelmed, but content like this certainly takes the edge off! Lucky to have the resources we have in this day and age!
Wow, this has me reminiscing about when I was working at a grocery store. Our freezers would occasionally get a bit off with the defrost timing and freeze over like this. We would hook a hose up to the hot water tap in the meat department and wash it down like this to melt the ice. I'm a software engineer now and never got into the HVACR industry since computer science has been my thing since 10th grade (I have a master's degree under my belt now), but I was always interested in this kind of stuff.
Love the videos my friend! The worst thing about grocery stores is the food in the way like you said, and also the panels at the bottom that are dirty and grimey with all sorts of crap all over them. Oh and the service call at 9pm on Friday or Saturday 😤
Good stuff Rick. Most generally I use the True.Drain line heaters in the self contained freezers I deal with. Can’t remember the part number. They are rated for 120v. ZeroZone doesn’t put drain line heaters in the o ea I work on

I remember my days working in Albertsons in S Florida. They refused to update their equipment and controls. When they’d call it’s a 10-12 hr day in their store

From what I hear finding a place that can handle 100,000+ people is the problem. And then I think the rest of it comes down to sharing the wealth between the different cities. My opinion is why would you ever have it in Chicago because the place is a shit hole and it’s dangerous. There was somebody shot right in front of one of the fancy hotels while we were there during the day. On average 40 to 60 people are killed over the weekend every week. Plus you’re not allowed to carry your concealed weapon there either so you’re defenseless.
Great video brother! OMG i feel you brother those damn tags! I think when they price change they throw the old tags down in the airflow grate and then they end up in the pan and drain. And the plastic pieces in the handle of the gallon milk jugs in dairy cases. I feel you pain man. When I hired on 10 years ago and they gave me a hose nozzle I knew I was part of the team! I have found that too much defrost causes the hoar frost on the small pints. Looking up the cases spec sheet and setting to manufacturers recommend defrost specs seemed to help. In the e2 controller I think if you put it in emergency defrost it will go the whole duration without terminating
This reminds me the good old days sometimes it was easy money on OT . Ones l hated we did several Costco stores & BJ store to defrost big evaporator . Those we had use the fork lift with the attachment cage in the big freezer with two guys & afterwards the fork lift gets stuck inside the freezer concrete floor 😮Great video.
When it come to de icing cases, instead of running a long stretch of water hose, we just use 55 gallon drum or trash can, put it on a distribution cart, fill it up with hot water at the mop sink, drop a pump down into the drum and go to town on it. Also take an old fan motor, cut the two prong power cord off of it, and wire it to a female plug.
Is that how you always terminate those raychem heat tapes? Just regular heatshrink? In their install instructions they want it done a certain way and it seems unnecessary to me

We got a store with a set of those old monsters im sorry 🤣...also if your gonna be doing more grocery work get youself a cart and ALWAYS have a shop vac with you. The drains ALWAYS leak on cases when de icing them i swear 🤣
The screens I’m referring to are directly in front of the Txv. This dirt can be caused from a combination of poor refrigeration practices causing carbon buildup in the system and dirty oil.

Nice video as always! If you don't mind me asking you about your meter the 376fc, how good is it? And have you ever had any issues with readings ohms above 60kohms being that's max range. Have you ever needed to use another meter to measure above 60k?
As you noticed, I’ve been using the 902 FC for a lot of my stuff lately because I made two different tool bags but I love my 376 even better however yeah there’s sometimes where I might get my fluke 87 five or my fluke 117 if I am worried about a higher resistance rating. Most the time we only need a moderately accurate amp meter voltmeter. I just need it to be reliable and turn on and know that I can count on it. That’s more important than anything because that’s what’s gonna save your life.
@HVACRSurvival would you ever consider using a fieldpiece meter? And I agree, meters for hvac guys its our lifeline, cannot cheap out on that, after using fieldpiece for a while im getting an 87v tomorrow so I'm pretty excited to use it, but the fieldpiece meter that I have has treated me nicely
Fieldpiece’s meters are good just not great. They work 95-98% of the time but there’s times when they can’t get the reading correct. Mainly on complicated wave forms. I own Fieldpiece manometers and probes without problems.
I have a customer and there refrigeration cases do not have a drain underneath the case. They have those small pumps that only united refrigeration sells and pumps the water to evaporate. I hate them so much!
This was an hour to an hour, and 15 minute drive up plus that coming back and I was there most of the day. The video was over an hour long. I had to cut a bunch of stuff out and it still was almost too long. I wanted to show using the controller More and show some of the other repairs that I had made and I would’ve liked to have shown the other compressor room which was really primitive looking but when I make it this long, sometimes hard to even get the viewers to stick around much more than 50% of whatever the video is
Yeah, this winter time has been very draining. Plenty of times I come home and just lay around until it’s time to go to bed lol especially with this cold Flippin weather.
When the customer constantly shows you all their problems and won't leave you alone to fix any of theses, I call this "The Tour". They will back stab you later on telling your boss that you didn't fix anything. Sometimes they will pull you off a job to fix Something stupid that they could have fixed themselves, then later on they will complain that the rebuild took to long. Of course no one reads the report to verify why it took so long.
Every store I go in I throw my Milwaukee vacuum in my cart because every store I do some how has clogged drains except the acorns evac stores there awesome
I got called in at 4am on my day off for 20 doors of frozen food down at a supermarket at a location an hour and a half away. Store manager cussed me out because I got there 2 hours after I got the call. I walked out and went home. Guy lost all his product. That was 10 years ago. Haven't touched a supermarket since. Sometimes it's best to just walk away. 😁
I usually tell them how long it will be before I can get there. I’m “always“ on a call no matter where I’m at 😉🤣. I don’t blame you but I would likely catch some crap for that. @HVACRSurvival It wasn't my first time having that customer talk to me that way. It was my first day off in weeks and I wasn't on call. My boss tried to force his hand by telling me I had to go or else. Him and the customer both learned a valuable lesson that day.
I'm not going to lie. Supermarket refrigeration was not my favorite. Wish I had some crabby old guy teaching me how to work those Emerson controllers 😂.
Some of those things I showed about how to pick your options and stuff like that were things that I wasn’t even told about, it took me twice as long to learn it because no one took the time to explain it, and no one gave me a manual. I’ll do more and more of these kind of videos as I get better at racks.
yeah, but if you’ve been doing it this long, you know how many things change from the 80s to even the 90s and then they skyrocketed from 2000 on I still have stores that we haven’t fully converted over to controllers that don’t even know when they have product getting too warm because they don’t have sensors in every case. those turn into disasters and a lot of money lost because they don’t watch the product close enough.
I’ll sometimes help them move some of it but honestly it’s not my product and what if I damage it. Plus I’m not gonna stack it very pretty in a cart. They’re better off to do it themselves.
O and I wanted to say great video BTW I do enjoy watching your work very educational I know if I was doing your kind of work I would come to your channel if I needed to learn something I don't know

Emergency defrost bypasses the defrost termination temperature so it says in defrost for full time duration.

That’s what I use in remote locations like a radio tower. I have used the fan plug idea before 👍👍 that comes in handy.

Works just fine. They’re probably worried about it possibly shortening into something but we haven’t had any problems.

Problem is I’m doing all kinds of different things everyday and I don’t have room for my cart. But I do have my vacuum.
