FAKE Penny Board vs REAL Penny Board (Compared)

  • Thinking about getting a fake Amazon penny board over a real Penny board? What logical person would even consider spending 70 dollars more? Is it worth it? That’s what I cover in this video.

So, the best way to see if that 70-dollar price gap is justified is to take both completely apart and compare each part.
Both boards are the same size, 22 inches long, and 6 inches at its widest point. Now, I’m not gonna lie, it’s pretty crazy how identical the decks are. It seems like they’re made with a similar mold. When riding them, the 30 dollar one bends slightly more than the real one because it’s a little thinner. Everything on the deck is pretty much the same, except for the logos.
When it comes to the hardware, I did notice a few differences. The bolts are similar in length, but the real Penny is powder-coated versus the other one it looks like it was painted, which chips off much easier. Another difference in the hardware is that the real penny has self-locking plastic built into all of its nuts to ensure they don’t loosen over time, whereas the fake only has this on its two truck nuts. This is a little concerning because if the wheel nuts loosen, one of your wheels could fall right off. And the speed washers are basically identical.
Next, we have the bushings, which are both barrel and cone bushings, and honestly, they’re basically the same. When it comes to the quality of the trucks, you can tell the fake ones are cheaper. Not only can you see this in the truck itself, but if you check out the base plate, it’s quite thinner than the other penny board truck. This would concern me if I was going to ride the board every day. If your trucks break, you’re pretty much screwed.
The wheels from the surface basically look identical. The 30 dollar one had one wheel with a small hole that went all the way down to the metal. So from a quality control standpoint, the real Penny is superior. I have all five penny board sizes and I’ve never run into this issue with a wheel. Not to mention the 30 dollar board wheels have less polyurethane, which makes you feel riding over bumps much more. When you cruise over pebbles or cracks on the real Penny Board, it’s a lot smoother. This is one of the major differences between the two and if you’re gonna be riding a bunch, I’d either suggest changing these out or just get the 100 dollar one.
When it comes to the bearings, there’s no comparison. The 100 dollar one has much better bearings that actually spin after I push them. Versus the other one, which are almost hard to get to spin! The 30 dollar penny claims they’re ABEC 7, but like they’re trash bro.
The final difference that I noticed was between the warranties. The 100 dollar one comes with a 12-month warranty versus the other one has a 30-day warranty.
It all comes down to what you’re willing to spend and what you’ll be using it for.

The board is actually only $25, and since the bearings are the only really terrible part, just get some Reds bearings are $17. That’s only $42 and still cheaper. And if you don’t like the wheels, Penny wheels are $30, which brings the total to $72. Since Penny raised the price of their boards to $109 recently, that’s still a $37 difference.

I had a fake penny I got at Goodwill for 6 bucks a year ago, and yesterday I managed to snag a real penny board for 13 bucks. This video sums up the differences pretty good, the real penny feels sooooo much smoother and nicer while the copy feels kind of rattly and you feel more bumps. Great video going more into detail about it!

The reason why some bearings suck is because the manufacturers use thick oils to lubricate them instead of thin oil. Over time, the thick oil will attract more debris, thus making your bearings suck even more.

  • @nunyabiz012

Great video!! Thanks for making this comparison.. (y)
One little thing about the bearings... it seems the Amazon board has industrial no-name brand bearings. They won’t spin as long as let’s say Bones bearings when you just spin them on the board since they use oil rather than special lube, but for actually riding, it usually makes very little difference. So for future tests like this, I’d recommend doing a roll test...
Choose a starting point, get on the board, give it one push and see how far they roll. I’d be really interested in the results...

Dude, you missed the main point - demo riding the boards, because there you get the real difference. You do your vids well generally, but here you really missed it. I am telling this out of experience - last year got my son (back then 6yo) a Penny-clone for $40 Canadian dollars from one of the local toy stores. I wasn't sure if he's going to like skating, so point was just to try on something (back then I had no board) and if he likes it, I was going to buy him a decent standard double-tail board. So, the thing came when we went to the asphalt - first of all, the board was tending to turn left always, no matter what you do. Even if you put it just on the ground (with no rider) and push it, it will go left. Second - no matter how you try to push the sides, the board just don't turn. The trucks, just were not turning left, nor right. I tried to play with the bolts - released the bushings compression, tightened - it was all the same - the board was not turning. I then noticed the trucks are a complete joke and trash. Meanwhile my son got really bored with the board, so he said he don't want to skate anymore. This year I got myself a longboard (Restless B52, nice one) and finally tried to learn to skate myself. I still had the Penny-clone, so tested it myself again - full joke, no turning. My son is now 7yo and totally not interested in skating. I was able to teach some of his friends and he gave away the board to them. I still try to hook him to skate, with no much luck, even on my board, let's hope he will bite this year or next year, so far he loves his kick scooter. Anyway. Point was - you missed to test the board or at least you said nothing about it. Maybe it was my mistake I did not got my son a decent board from the get go, but I just did not had the money to spend back then (being parent is complicated sometimes) and just wanted him to try on something first. Anyway. Generally you do good vids, just keep in mind, to show more details next time, not just hardware comparison.

    • @concrete-waves
      @concrete-waves  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

1000% agree with you. In the beginning, I was super focused on comparing components. While I do still think that's important to include in my vids, the overall feel of how it rides should be the main focus. Appreciate you taking your time to share this. Thank you!

@@concrete-waves such a classy response. The hardware comparison matters AND so does the subjective riding experience of the board. Stray does have a good point. Cheap boards may produce unintended consequences such as turning off a kid to skating.

abec rating doesnt mean anything for skateboarding really, look up what it actually means.
its for undustry bearings and the higher the number the less tolerance there is for imperfections, which sounds great, but ultimately
doesnt matter much in skateboarding at all.
to notice a difference you´d have to ride your skateboard with around 200 mph for several hours ...
go with skate rated bearings, dont have to be expensive, but they should be from an actual skateshop!
buying the cheap thing and replacing wheels and bearings can probably work, but you gotta consider that A: really decent wheels of that size and hardness are around 30-40$ too and good bearings are around 15-20$, so you end up around 80$ still
and B: you still have to make do with the low quality hardware, trucks and bushings.
I guess it depends on your standards too, but if you want to cruise smoothly, pay for some quality.

Don’t buy fake trash boards, if you do you won’t have any fun on them, they stop like right after you pushed. If you buy a penny, and those aren’t even that expensive, you will have a much better board and much more fun.
