Enjoyed your review. Unconsciously, people really, really want minivans. They just don't think they do due to image insecurities and vanity. You are right. The Grand Highlander is basically a minivan made to look like a SUV. That's why you can't buy one because the demand is through the roof. On the other hand, big SUVs are today's minivans so that's why the most insecure reject these too and now buy giant 4 WD pickups with tiny beds to commute to their office jobs.

There is one thing that reviewers always get wrong, in my opinion. It's the constant complaining that SUVs need to have some sort of firm sports suspension for some reason. That might be cool when you have a press vehicle for a week, but then you own the car for years it gets really tiresome really fast. I own a CX9, and the one thing i hate about it is its stiff suspension, to the point where it will be a major point on consideration for my next vehicle to have something softer. I will sacrifice the 10% of the time i want a sporty feel for the 90% where i want a softer comfortable ride

Jack's comment about the seats being "short" are important. I had to get rid of my CX-5 that I otherwise loved due to the terrible seat shape. The Bottom part of the seat was too short for leg support and also shaped wrong. I can't believe no reviewers really mentioned that.

Indeed. Such small details are hard to notice (feels a bit uncomfortable at test drive, but can't figure out why).
I got rid of my Opel minivan mostly because of seats. Some "genius" at GM had an idea to put tiny seats in a big minivan. Caused massive butt and back pain after a while, eventually made it impossible to drive that car.
Got Forester instead and now I again can drive for hours in comfort. It is a bit smaller, has less storage space, but it is so comfortable. Driving it on gravel roads too, which I used to avoid.

As always, great video as pertaining to the breakdown of the actual car. I take one small exception with the cringey jokes about having a family and actually needing a car this size - I am THE GUY you guys were poking fun at. I have 5 kids, ages 15 to 23, so only a couple are still at home. But this would have been the exact car I would have wanted when we needed a vehicle big enough to haul everyone in comfort. We never made the jump to a full-size SUV because a minivan was 10x more practical and a mid-size SUV was too small, but we always knew we'd look cooler in a SUV and life would be infinitely more interesting with some light off-road capability. But having a family, next to marrying the right person (which I did) was the single best decision of my life. Nothing has made me happier. These days my wife is driving a 2020 F150 Platinum which she loves and is the perfect car for hauling her ski's and snowboards + a couple kids and friends up into the UT mountains without having to worry about getting stuck. I have a Tesla, '22 M3P. My youngest is currently learning to drive and she wants a car with a manual transmission (did I do something right?). My son did laps around SpeedVegas in a GT500 and a 911 GT3RS for a graduation trip and I watched with tears in my eyes as he passed a timid Huracan driver. See? It can actually be fun. My kids all love or at least appreciate cars (my oldest daughter bought her own '22 Elantra N 8DCT a little over a year ago, her twin recently went for a '24 Outback Touring, we're still working on her haha), and we have the best times getting together on the weekends for BBQ's, the dog park, skiing, hiking, camping, etc. When the kids were younger we took them to the drag races whenever we could until they closed them down several years ago, unfortunately, but those were some of the best times together and they still talk about how fun it was. I'm sure the joking is somewhat in jest but I wanted to chime in with my .02 anyway, because I seriously don't get all the negativity around marriage and family and wanted to give my perspective. We've invested a lot in our kids and it's been amazing. I regret nothing. Peace ✌

I’ve owned several iterations of both the Highlander and Sienna. The Sienna by far has superior room and better driving manners on highway where it spent most of its time. If you’ve got kids or dogs, the Sienna’s big sliding door is better for easy entry. Storage is better in Sienna too. Yes,it’s a minivan, but it’s better than a Highlander.

You comment about just getting a minivan is spot on. Save money save tons of gas money. There is zero benefit to getting a large SUV to haul people that has a high entry cost and a higher fuel cost for the life of the vehicle.
We are out of the minivan stage, but back in 2008 we thought about a Honda Pilot for our five member family, but once we saw the Honda Odyssey and how much better it was as a people hauler plus how much better mpg it got, it was a no brainer. Ironically, I still have that van and two of my kiddos are learning to drive on it.

It looks more like a really large RAV 4 than a Highlander, IMO. Interior is standard Toyota. Mostly good. I like the RAV 4 ride better than the Highlander because the Highlander is more floaty so this car would be more floaty than the Highlander. Still, the ride quality of Toyotas in terms of impact harshness is superb. Ride motions are more felt in the crossovers than the sedans. This vehicle likely to sell quite well for Toyota.

the only downside is lack of power, its 4 cylinders plus hybrid, but thats your trade off for good mpg. you want it be faster, buy hybrid max.. i personally don’t like to have turbine in my car, so im fine with it to a bit less powerful but less gas hungry on gas in return.

Personally, I like my 2023 Honda Odyssey Elite. It has a 'sporty' ride, is very maneuverable, gets an honest 28 mpg, has manual controls for HVAC, decent tunes, and supportive seats. In the minivan segment, most give you chair-like seating in the front two rows which is important for sitting on long hauls.
Ingress/egress is great. I just turn my ass towards the seat, plop down, and swing my legs in.

Meets all our needs, including the ability to get the canoes to rough gravel road locations. It handles better than the old HL that’s for sure.

If it is built correctly it will last just fine. Toyota has V6s more reliable than V8s of other manufacturers that prove engine size has nothing to do with reliability. Keep your oil changes and do the maintenance required and the engine will be fine.

    • @papa_pt
