  • We do a first drive review on the new 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander SUV, which blends full-size SUV with minivan features. We discuss some of the engineering highlights, the pros and cons, and who the vehicle is designed for. In a crowded marketplace, the others to consider are Honda Pilot, Kia Telluride, Mazda CX90, Volvo XC90, and Acura MDX.

    For a new "regular" car, this has one of the best interiors (in terms of layout, material choices and design). Before you jump on me, let me clarify. I know it isn't "premium", that's not what I meant. This new interior has buttons for the things most people want (HVAC, radio, drive controls), large screen(s) for ease of use, nice trim materials with no gloss black and even a few color options for the "leathers". Some new vehicles seem to be over styled just for the sake of doing it, or they are plastered in gloss black (which looks like crap in one month). It looks like anyone could get in this vehicle and either know how to use it right away and if there is a learning curve, it's minimal at best. Toyota's interiors are never "flashy", they are functional. You can buy one, use it for 10 years, and it still looks good and works 10 years later.

      @baronvonjo1929 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      How is the taller ride height a drawback. That is literally one of the most significant reasons people buy crossovers. And honestly I don't blame them. A simple hill can block your view and makes a turn dangerous in a sedan these days. They keep making them lower and "sportier" for shits and giggles.

    • @frafraplanner9277
      @frafraplanner9277 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@baronvonjo1929 The fact that everyones locked in an arms race of getting a tall vehicle to see over everyone else's overweight vehicle is one drawback. Another drawback is compromised handling when not going directly straight. Though I understand there are pros to the ride height like back and knee comfort, especially when it feels like all sedans are basically on the ground

    • @baronvonjo1929
      @baronvonjo1929 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@frafraplanner9277 Eh this is nothing new. I have had a sedan and loved it. But you really can't even see because of obstacles besides other cars on the road. The orginal cars were tall like crossovers. We really are just returning to the norm. Sedans as we know we're the fad I guess.
      Handling? Have consumers ever cared about handling? Even when sedans ruled the market most of them would never be thought of as great handling cars and that was not a selling point. Handling when buying a new car is rarely a consideration.

    Great review per usual. Interesting choice in the 3 row SUV segment. Toyota might have a winner. As a former highlander owner, the 3rd row isn’t very usable and smaller overall. Everything else was fine for the segment. My telluride had a very usable 3rd row but daily fuel economy wasn’t great (19-20 mpg for non-highway), plus I thought the ride wasn’t very smooth (5-10 hour road trips). This vehicle might have Telluride practicality with Highlander smoothness. The VW Atlas will become irrelevant in this segment. I’m curious to see if Lexus produces a model on this platform, which could become a far more pragmatic alternative to the X7 or GLS

    I like all the physical buttons and controls. Hopefully others will "steal" this design. Now that they've made a respectably-sized 3 row SUV, I wish they would take the third row out of the regular Highlander and make it strictly two rows with more cargo capacity.

    • @springertube
      @springertube ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You don't have to use a third row, and that extra capacity is there... Along with having the third row available for occasional use. But, I get the idea of a Passport-like version that is a dedicated two row, but is still usefully bigger than nicer than a RAV4. Perhaps the next Highlander should be optional third-row like the first-gen was, so if you truly don't want it "under any circumstances" you're not paying extra dollars or weight penalty.

    Coming from minivans, I've had a crush on the Telluride for a while and really like the look of the new Palisade. But, I've done enough research to be a little weary of reliability, especially since we tend to beat up our cars. I have high hopes for this Grand Highlander, because our experience with the Sienna (and other Toyotas in the past) has been stellar. Very reliable, no major problems outside of the usual, and they took a beating from kids and aggressive drivers. 😄 If this falls in the same price point as the Kia and Hyundai (and availability isn't crazy), I could see us getting this one. Not as flashy on the outside as the Palisade, but I'm willing to give up some style for substance.

    I’m glad they came out with a very functional 3 row suv finally in the midsize which is basically large size class now. The older highlanders were horrendous for 3rd row if it wasn’t a child back there if you could fit and have actual cargo capacity. Why come out with a family car with no cargo space automatically have to get a box make zero sense. I thought this may have been the one for us since we’re gonna be needing a new bigger suv but since you said it’s a bobble head machine I don’t think I can handle that driving to work everyday on our rough and bobbly road we have here in mid Tn. I guess it’s a pilot or pathfinder, but really wanted the limited hybridmax option. We’ll drive it and give it a chance though. I can see the 20k over adm now at the dealer.

    Mark, you should compare this with the new Honda Pilot and the Nissan Pathfinder , now the GHL truly competes with these two in terms of space and passenger comfort. Ofcourse the popular Kia / Hyundai twins and Atlas too. Toyota finally gave the Highlander that should have been what this is all along. That would be a wonderful comparison.

    Hi guys... good review. Just wanted to comment on the floaty ride that was brought up on your road test. Question... does the sport mode drive select stiffen the suspension enough to reduce that feeling, or is that only for throttle response? Thx!

    • @oneopinion6806
      @oneopinion6806 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm going to bet there is no adjustable suspension. They most likely would have mentioned it had that been the case. It'll just be messing with the throttle.

    My only issue is the softness of the ride… I had a ‘14 Highlander before my ‘17 Pilot and my kids always complained of being car sick. Never had a car sick complain in the Pilot. I think I’ll be getting a ‘24 or ‘25 Pilot next year, but the Grand H does look really good inside and out.

      That's one of the worst things about considering any Toyota vehicle. I live in the Dallas area and every dealer here tacks on useless options and other crap. Even if you order it from the factory they will tell you they "have to" add LoJack, nitrogen, window VIN etching, "paint sealant", etc. for several thousand dollars. It's obnoxious and infuriating, like TX Toyota dealers are stuck in the 1980's.

    I wish my wife and I knew this vehicle was soon to be released when we bought our 2023 highlander xse in the beginning of February 😑 we had a 2022 rav4 xle which we loved, but we were having a 3rd child, so now we needed a vehicle with a third row. That being said, we do love the standard highlander xse. Surprisingly, I've been able to average nearly 35mpg combined city/hwy on my daily work commute, which really isn't bad since ours isn't even the hybrid engine.
