      I've been posting the same comment since the BZ4X came out, but I like the way you worded it. I think the tip off is the battery size. Maybe they don't know how to make an efficient EV but when on top of that you choose to put in a smaller battery than all of the competition, and most people look at range first, it's obvious you don't really want the car to succeed. Toyota hamstrung this car because they don't want to make EVs. I have a Rav4 Prime and that's an example of what Toyota can do when they care. I'm not sure they'll be able to catch up if EVs take over the market. The other tip off is that they haven't really improved the car in terms of its core specs. Finally they really had to make it very bad for it to fail because there are so many loyal Toyota customers who would have loved a reasonable RAV4 EV.

    • @flacjacket
      @flacjacket 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      @@MolishiousToyota uses nickle instead of lithium batteries as a cost consideration, they aren't as energy dense so the battery is probably the same size as the competition just with less capacity but the packaging constraints within a given en vehicle size class limit the dimensions of the battery hence the inferior range. When it comes time to replace the battery however the cost will be almost an order of magnitude less. I bet in 20 years there will be more of these rolling around than the competition simply because they won't mechanically total themselves at 12-15 years old the way every other EV will.

    • @drunkenhobo8020
      @drunkenhobo8020 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      @@flacjacket Only the basic hybrid uses nickel-metal hydride batteries, the plug-in Prime uses lithium like anything else with a decent sized battery. You'd struggle to find an EV built in the last 20 years that used nickel-metal hydride.

      When I pulled out of my 41F garage yesterday the range was 169 miles. (Normally 220 in the summer). As the thermometer adjusted to the 2F weather the range dropped to 129 miles while still at 100% charge. Imagine 129 miles of city range, less on the highway, and then having to spend 1:30 hours to get it back to 80% where you then only have another 104 miles before empty again.

    • @Neberheim
      @Neberheim 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@MtnXfreeride What SoC is that? Can the Solterra not schedule or start cabin conditioning before leaving, or are your numbers including that? The engine of my old diesel Golf wouldn’t get warm enough to heat the cabin until about a 30-40 minute drive, so I got used to bundling up and using the seat heaters, and I don’t really mind that.
      I’d probably try to precondition Solterra cabin to 80° or something while it’s plugged in and then bundle up and keep the cabin to at a minimum and/or use the seat heater. How does that compare to what you do?
      I’ve had a garage for less than two years, so driving a car that starts warm then gets colder is still be better than what I’m used to.
      I was going to ask a dealer for an extended test drive of one they have priced fairly, knowing that it’s not a roadtripper, but less than 150 miles of range in any season is a dealbreaker.

I thought about it and drove it but as a current Tesla owner, this thing is just a pig. I can hit 4 miles per kWh in my Tesla, 3.8 lifetime average. My Tesla has way more power and is much more capable in terms of putting down power though I wish it had more ground clearance. I was also shocked how loud the Solterra is on the highway as it doesn’t have acoustic glass like our Tesla and our Outback. Ultimately we decided to keep our Outback XT with the 2.4 turbo, it’s such a great car, and I can’t seem to find a good substitute that is reasonably priced. It exists as a compliance vehicle because the powers that be forced the market to artificially adapt with products nobody wants. Not knocking EV’s but it’s a pipe dream thinking they would work for even half the North American population.
    Even if brands like Mazda and Toyota didn’t embarrassingly phone it in, like they made the most amazing EV imaginable at a class-leading price, the inherent drawbacks of an EV - the facts you can’t fill it in 5 minutes at 1 of 63,000 gas stations in the continental United States alone - kills it.

    I've had 3 EV's, and picked up a 2024 last summer, love it. Not going to say it doesn't have more than a few faults, but it does some things very well.
    Pros:
    Heat pump. Most EV's outside Tesla don't have them, and it makes a big difference.
    Accurate range projection
    Very efficient in town during warm weather (I've seen 4+mi/kWh).
    Despite the low peak charging speed, the curve is actually pretty respectable.
    Excellent AWD system even by Subaru standards
    Car very well put together and feels like a quality product
    Comfortable (even more so than my Model S)
    Handling and ride is surprisingly good
    Zero phantom / vampire drain while parked (makes a huge difference without home charging)
    Safety features can be useful
    Cons:
    Other than wireless Carplay, the software is like something written by Germans in the 1990's
    No trip planner (see above)
    Safety systems are naggy, annoying, and downright embarrassing (let the neighborhood know I need to check the backseat)
    If the SoC is below 20% with a very cold pack, the power output is limited to dangerous levels (hills, traffic).
    Car needs to be off to initiate fast charging (can be turned back on after charging starts)
    Mountain passes burns through a lot of SoC.
    Seems like a great car for some people (like myself) as long as you know what you're getting into, others beware.
    A road tripping EV... no
    A technical showcase for electrification... no
    A comfortable, cheap to run car for commuting around town, and rural driving... yeah it's great

      I agree. There are no surprises here. If you can live within the obvious limitations and you save considerable money, it’s a good deal. I really like my 2023, and I can’t point to any one reason why, but the package resonates with me. I got a great lease deal and in a couple years it will go back, to be replaced with whatever’s the best option at the time. No regrets. P.S. I think the software is fine, especially if you use CarPlay or Android Auto most of the time, but to each their own.

    I will offer a counterpoint to all the people dunking on this (most of whom have never driven one). We have one that we leased with about $12k off sticker. It's a second-car family runabout for us, and we have charged it anywhere but home precisely once in a year and a half (and, admittedly, it sucked to do so). Where we live, we see about 500" of snowfall a year (Utah Mountains). We drive it 50-80 miles each day, every day for the school run and office commute (and errands) and can charge at home every night. We are in the demographic of about 430 people in this country for whom this car is the right choice and it's actually good. The AWD system is genuinely better in the snow than other EVs. X-mode genuinely helps in deep snow (more than 10"). The learning curve for operating this EV is basically non-existent compared to other vehicles like Teslas and Rivians. I would pick this over a MachE, over an ID4, over an Equinox, over a Bz4X, and even over a Tesla *for our specific use case*. I have a Tesla AWD LR that we use road tripping, but if I driving to the grocery store (15 miles and 3000 vertical feet each way down and back up a mountain road) in the winter, I genuinely prefer taking the Subaru.
    EDIT: Our big complaint about this is how off-brand a short range Subaru wagon is. Outbacks, Foresters, Crosstreks are phenomenal "road trip to a National Park and go camping" cars, and this one just can't. It's a dumb car with a very specific niche. But I'm in that niche.

      Just leased the Limited trim with little to no money down and very low monthly fee ... I agree with everything you said and as a former Model 3 owner, I much prefer the conventional interior, gauges and stocks in this and of course the built quality. We are a niche for sure, but i'm glad this vehicle exists.

      Came from a Tesla, and picked the Solterra over both an ID.4, and Ioniq 5/6.
      It does fit better for some people. I honestly just loved the how ti felt to drive, and it mostly out spec'd the older Model S it replaced.
      The AWD system in it does not disappoint, heat pump, and wiper heater makes this a really good Central OR vehicle in poor weather.
      I also live off public chargers as I live in an apartment. The 2024 really isn't that bad, starts off slow and but ramps up nicely with a decent curve,

    I enjoy driving the solterra as a loaner car from the dealership. I loathe the piano black plastic of the Toyota interior. I'm disappointed by the range but it would do fine as the city car knowing that you get the 10 days of loaner car from dealership if you want to travel. Charging isn't really an issue to me because I rarely exceed the 150 mile radius of where I live and there are enough level 2 chargers to make up the difference. I won't own one but I do ask my self why I like it so much and I don't have that answer. Rooting for a good Subaru EV by 2030 though not holding my breath.

    • @thatoneotherotherguy
      @thatoneotherotherguy 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      It brings up a good point that many reviewers can't comprehend to acknowledge: that not all new car buyers are serious roadtrippers or care about posted range virtually at all. Most 50+ adults I know have not road tripped further than 100 miles from home in 5+ years. They simply don't do it. Tens of millions of new car buyers fit this description and have a single-family home with a garage to put a level 2 charger in. That's why those people don't care about "range weenie" concerns, and they go ahead and buy. And many of those same people want an EV, but they demand it be from a trusted brand they've been buying for decades. Which is how the Honda Prologue somehow became a sales success.

      I cross shopped the bolt, mustang, and ioniq 5. The bolt was too small and cheap, the ioniq 5 drove like a boring brick and felt really cheap inside, the mustang was too small and also felt cheap.. then the Solterra felt nice inside and drove well. I was fully aware of the limited range.. I am 7K miles/9months in and never used a fast charger since we have another car for trips... its kind of a perfect commuter car if you have a secondary car for long trips at home. My home charger calculates usage and in January it came out to the equivilent of getting 39mpg when gas is $3/gallon.. not bad for a medium SUV and not bad for our high elecitricity prices during one of the least efficeint months for an EV.
      Anyway, it is my first lease and they gave me $21k for my WRX that I have invested.. that invested WRX money is going to pay for my next car outright.. so all things considered.. Im making out well.

    The only thing the Solterra/Bz4x have over the ID4 are better door/steering wheel controls and better infotainment. Everything else is superior on the ID4 - especially if you're looking for a compliant ride. If you're willing to deal with bumps for sportiness the Model Y and Ioniq 5 are the best bang for the buck - maybe Mach E if a Ford fan. Only somebody who has to have the Toyota nameplate or is in love with piano black plastic would be compelled to buy this.

    many years ago i set two future benchmarks for EVs to aim at, that i thought were core household transport: a good subaru-like thing that could take five people on any road & still fit in city parking spaces, and a good minivan
    both of them needed big gains in energy density & efficiency but the main thing was they did the job, all seasons, w/o you having to think about it
    maybe the tech would be moving forward faster w/ more info sharing; and in the face of nature getting more & more chaotic, it seems really stupid for these big production webs to be playing their cards close to the chest
