i just noticed "im treading my own path" aint samurai supposed to serve a lord ? and a samurai without a lord is a ronin. why does ubisoft claim that he still is a samurai ?
I watched a Japanese TH-camr reacting to the trailers and she said yasuke looked like a oni with his armor and weapon and the way he was violently killing people. Im African but i didn't even realize how much that reenforces stereotypes of black people being violent creatures.
Not only that, but he's wearing Nobunaga's armor that can only be worn in war by a blood relative of Nobunaga. So it actually looks like Yasuke just stole the armor and is walking around with it to mock everyone.
There is a word in Russian which is translating as "the cranberry", it is used when foreign (mostly American) media takes only surface level stereotypes about Russia when creating a characters or settings, completely ignoring any cultural aspects and doing no research. Making the most stupid mistakes in the process. I welcome Japanese people to Ubisoft's Crannbery flavored Japan
I'm Texan, so at least I can laugh at the absurd way my home is portrayed (usually a single trash building in a desert). Though now that I think about it, it's Western media that portrays us as a bunch of racist redneck white hillbillies... even though we're one of the most diverse states in the US... Know what, I'm entirely on your side. Fuck American media for the shit they do.
Everyone is guilty of doing it because not everyone is interested in doing research. Even Japan is guilty of doing it. You'd be hard-pressed to find a region that isn't guilty of doing this at some point in time. Hopefully, AC Shadows fails.
@@NewCanadaIt isn't really an excuse that everyone's doing it. It's okay if you're going for a comedic effect by being deliberately ridiculous, but if you aim to create a serious work and you have cringey caricatures instead of actual people, mess up the setting so badly that you cannot tell what it really is, and you don't even bother to rectify your mistakes, despite that you could do that by taking like an hour of your time to google it, then you deserve to be laughed at and humiliated.
@@NewCanada Can you really compare making a black samurai as the main character and literally killing your own people? You can make innocent mistakes, but American media is beyond reproach.
So, if I'm hearing this right, Yasuke is - Walking around fully decked out for war - Blatantly ignoring honor and tradition - Claiming to be both a samurai and a free agent at the same time, despite those being mutually exclusive - And is using his katana in a way that has no known school of origin Did... did Ubisoft accidentally do a racism? Cause it sounds like by trying to prop this guy up on a pedastle, they made him into a violent thug. So I guess congrats on them for managing to disrespect both sides instead of _just_ Japan.
This seems less and less “accidentally racist” and more and more willfully ignorant. All of these actions and decisions tell me that Ubisoft has such low opinions of its players and the peoples being represented that they just callously cobbled together a “Japanese” game, not because they hate Japan necessarily (or Africans for that matter), but simply because they thought they could. They thought they could cobble together a bunch of mismatched Japanese as well as Asian elements into a game, set up a black historical character with vague enough history they felt they could do whatever they wanted with his narrative, slapdash game mechanics on top and sell it all at a ludicrous price. And they were convinced the sheeple would just baaa and buy it. Cuz that’s what they think we are, sheeple.
@@Nod0nFire Which is also them giving a passive approval to and admittance that a loud minority of people who would celebrate this are viewed as their target demographic. The reason Yusuke has to kill everyone so brutally. And there's hip hop on the soundtrack. Is because rich people on a DEI panel think that's how black people behave. (Hint: Black people can also be wealthy, privileged CEOs who grew up in gated communities. DEI people might not know that.)
@@ilteschio8244they should have done a Yasuke DLC like Jack the Ripper DLC. Have you play Yasuke and he’s secretly a Templar. That’s why the history is wrong about him. Hes sent to Japan by the templars for a goal or plan or whatever. That would be awesome.

The irony of them calling people racist and then using that hip hop soundtrack for the black Samurai. 😑 I'm assuming the Japanese ninja girl will have hip hop music as well.
I mean, Hip Hop music is a good fit for a samurai settings. Just look at Afro Samurai or Samurai Champloo. But yeah, they did it because he's black and that's racist.
Hip hop, making black man violent for no apparent reasons, “da hood” plus japan english accent, dreadlock.. wow! Ubi didn’t pull any punches for this game 😅
Probably not hip-hop, but we might see Chinese music for her, given that she was apparently gifted a Chinese instrument when she was young for some reason
Something to keep in mind also is the historical context they picked. Out of all the decades of the epic Sengoku period they chose an obscure Iga subjugation. They limited what we could have seen, the Asakura, Oda's father in law Saito Dosan, the warrior monks fights, all by restricting themselves to Yasuke's 15 months perspective until honnoji. The depraved buddhist monks being templars would have been a fascinating take, and shown Oda's Demon King of the Sixth heaven in a new light (like in Sengoku Komachi Kurotan)

All this, all this nonsense just because Ghost of Tsushima made success and praise from people. For years Assassins Creed fans has be begging for an Assassins Creed game set on Japan, and this is what Ubisoft deliver. What waste. ⭐

Stances aren't just important for using Japanese swords. They're used for pretty much most weapons, even in Europe and other parts of the world. HEMA people love their sword manuals and such. This is just Ubi being basic and making it more video game-y and less accurate to real combat. Disappointing, but also 100% expected from them. Love the moment of "WTF, why are the bonus items so Chinese-themed?" towards the end.
I'm a Korean who loves the history and culture of Japan, China, and Korea. This is my 3rd time watching your fun and cute video. Really thank you guys. Personally, the most disgusting scene to me was the way all the Japanese commoners bowed down to the Mighty Samurai, the cause of the war and blood and starving, as if in sincere respect. Moreover he was a black alien dude. Even if a Legendary Tenno Yasuke had been a real Samurai, as like Ubisoft's propaganda, he would have been an object of scorn and ridicule. Being of a different race was not an easy thing to accept at the time, and if it was a samurai walking around town alone, he would have been the target of the people's wrath. The fantasy of him walking the peaceful streets full-armed is acceptable. Cause it's a Ubisoft's low-quality game as usual. However, that scene, all the Japanese commoners bowed down to Yasuke, is a metaphor for the Japanese people bowing like robots to a random Westerner dude. This is a clear indication of how Westerner thinks Asian. Bowing our head is a sign of respect and obedience at that time. But Sengoku Period's samurai was an axis of evil that ruined the lives of the commoners. If he had walked through a street alone and full-armed like that arrogantly, his head would have been on that Torri, a ignorant symbol that Ubisoft put at the entrance to the town, even though it should actually be in front of a shrine or a temple. They are using the black people they enslaved for hundreds of years as a shield to trample on and brainwash other cultures now. It's time for Japan to wake up and distance from Western now. You have already paid the price of imperialism long ago. In fact, Japan paid it with the tragedy of the two big bombs, the moment you lost the war. Nevertheless, you worked for them for 80 years, and now you no longer have to submit to their slavery system and modern imperialism. Please understand that my stupid anger is not directed at you lovely couple. Thanks again for the great and fun video.
Exactly. They are beyond disrespecting Japanese (and Asian as proxy) culture as also using black people as human shields for all the understandable criticisms. Ubislop, ladies and gentlemen!
Thank you for your comment and continued support! I definitely agree, at this time there's no shot these people wouldn't try to zero a random fully armored samurai that just decided to waltz up on their town. When I was speaking with my Japanese friend (who really loves and studies a lot of Japanese history) that was one of the first things he said lol I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment, thank you again!
Look into what "afrocentrism" is in case you're interested as to why historical entertainment is always black people centric even when they shouldn't be there, like that viking story in Netflix...
I appreciate your passion. This game, just like the opening ceremony for the Olympic Games and much more, was made to humiliate a people, a culture, believes and customs, under the guise of love and inclusion. It's dystopian, but these people are not all mighty. They have to face resistance at every level of their works. Including video games.
I'd like to point out that he wouldn't be walking around in his armor that way if he WAS a samurai. The armor was used for ceremonies, parades, and other special occasions outside of battles. They would have never just traveled around like that. His character design as a whole makes absolutely no sense.

@@ErrolBaer it's a nice japaneese style of commentary, kind of different from standard that you get, the thing is how they will evolve it, because at this moment it's riding on popularity of AC shadows controversy, in 3 months it will flop, and people will just giggle about DEI killing ubi, and i don't know if there are so many games to review in historical way, so content will have to evolve some way for sure, this boost will at least give them chance and better visiblity on youtube, to at least get new viewers if those don't stay for a long run

I've always been obsessed with Japanese culture and history, and in recent years, authentic representations of it. This feels like the 47 Ronin movie where they just mixed and matched Asian cultures together without caring. They just haphazardly took and placed things from Japan they thought looked cool without researching them properly. Also, it looks like the sendan-no-ita on Yasuke's armor is broken for some reason. I probably won't buy this game. Vote with our wallets, as they say. Ghost of Tsushima and Rise of the Ronin already scratched my open-world historical Japan itch. Can't wait for the inevitable Ghost of Tsushima 2.

This is a very small complaint compared to the much larger issues, but it’s so bizarre to me that they chose for the main character to be a samurai/ronin and not a ninja? You would think that it would be a no brainer given that the series is supposed to be centered around stealth, assassinations, and espionage. I get that the story of Yasuke has been more in the public eye now, but damn. First was Black Flag which still kind of kept the idea of a pirate that was also becoming an assassin, then Oddysey where you’re more of a roman legionary rather than an assassin. Then Valhalla where you’re essentially this hulking tank of a viking and now we’re another tank that’s a samurai that has hulk-like kill animations? I thought Mirage was a step in a right direction in that regard but now we’re reverting back to this formula where we’re not even playing as assassins in a series that’s supposed to be centered around that. But the assassin part is like an after thought that was tacked on. What the fuck?
I know exactly how you feel, a shinobi would've mixed in much more smoothly into Assassin's Creed, it's such a shame new video out now, hope to see you there!
Me being an AC player for years i also noticed some glitches/lazy animations in the trailer, that are typical for Ubisoft. When Yasuke was fighting the goons the sakura petals (some of them) were suspended in the air.. literally levitating. When Yasuke impaled and liftedthe guy and trew him to the side, his left hand got stiff in unnatural position. When Naoe swung the chain and sickle she cut some bamboo down and it despawned... like is the Animus glitching or something? Everything screams laziness, negligence and incompetence. Guess that's what happens when developer focus on collecting diversity hires like pokemons instead of employing the correct people for the job.
A truly Ubislop experience xDDD And they are the same people that are saying making AAAA games and wants YOU to be okay for not owning the games/products you buy. Damn hell!
The armor in a town throws me off. Typically you would only wear it into battle. For 1 it is a pain to put on and you generally need help to do so and 2 you’re generally slower in it so your movements are all out of whack and it’s only practical against others in armor. Hence why Ukechi was taken out by a peasant spearman.
Another point like you mentioned you would aim for the gaps in the armour. Eg. throat, wrists, armpit, inside of legs. Hard surface to hard surface = chipping/ breaking. It looks like they didn’t get an actual practitioner to demonstrate movements before doing mocap.
@@mathyszka Also, why would you fight with your katana against an armoured samurai when you have a Kanabō at hand ? Makes no sens. Katanas are way to soft (bend easly), brittle edge and expensive to waste like that on armour.
Exactly this. It's like a major studio making a big budget serious world war II themed movie but not actually putting any real effort into inserting the content you take to respectfully make the film seem like something you would see from that era. Then you get former military personnel lambasting the movie for it's lack of effort and the studio calls them racist, pretty much like the situation we have here.

Just to add context about "self introductions" and "claiming the head" The two are actually related. Shogo has a video or a short on this I think. When a samurai starts doing his introduction, his enemy has to remember what the samurai calls himself. Because when you take the head to the samurai treasurer or whatever (the guy with your lord's money) you have to be able to tell them "This is the head of So and So, Son of So and So, Serving under Lord Otherguy, Defender of Osaka Castle, who I slew to do my duty etc." because if the head can't be identified, you don't get paid for that head. And similarly, when they call out their attacks, you're supposed to remember the names, because when you tell the story to your lord, you would go "Ah So and So unleashed his Seven Dragon Strikes, which I bore on my armor six and killed him before the seventh, yada yada" because telling a good story about the guy you killed gets you those respect points. So if you have time, you really should be writing notes when the other guy does his introduction and stuff. You're not being courteous, it's because you want the proper credit for the kill.
While cashing body parts in is horrible (oh, human history) the whys are so fascinating. I didn't even think about the story part. Sure you could invent anything because you're going to extrapolate anyway to make it sound more epic, but using all the names you get from the enemy themselves is great. I assume this also served as historical account that survived up to today about each samurai/fighting man (even if some details are going to be exaggerated).
I think the reason Ubi has gotten into more trouble with this one is because Japan REALLY loves and cherishes their history and culture. Like, not even the most nationalistic movements and countries try to shield and preserve their culture as much as the Japanese do. They are protecting it from outside influence with such ferocity, it continues being fascinating to the outside world. Peope respect the Japanese for this. But unfortunately, the progressives hate tradition. They hate it because to them it's conservative and thus oppressive. But tradition is culture. And they want multiculturalism. They want diversity. But they cannot understand that you need to have homogeneity in order for that to combine into their liveral stronghold melting pots. If you are progressive or liberal, this is why you sometimes get that weird feeling like you're missing something, right? It's because people are trying to protect something you desire, but you keep hating on it. You want culture for your multi-culturalism, but then call then fascists when they try to keep cultures separated and distinct. You are advocating for the death of culture without knowing it. And you know who also did that? The communists. Just saying.
I agree, there's many white culture vultures in black culture today and it seems the people who pressed green on this game is trying to do the same to japan XD. I don't mind a black main protagonist in a japanese setting as it DID happen so a fantasy take on his experience would be interesting but it was done poorly through careless placements of almost EVERYTHING.
Really? With all the hentai and a plethora of progressive themes found in anime on a yearly basis, Japan is conservative in name only. Besides, other people can fully adopt Japanese culture into their lives. I mean, millions of slaves in America and Europe's colonies were forced to adopt Western standards at gunpoint, yet somehow it's "impossible" for others to adopt Japanese culture because of some shallow prerequisite like homogeneity? Right wingers are just truly pathetic.
@@AeonPhoenix The fact that you used "hentai" as your first example tells me all about you, dear Reddit gooner. What? Are you actually that bigoted? And the final fact is that you assumed I'm a right-winger? Because who else would ever possibly criticise anything the perfectly morally correct left-wing does? That stylized black and white look when performing a kill looks really off, in ghost of Tsushima it was done really well and made sure that the models didn't look like mannequins when it happened, in the first assassination, the head just looked like it was a background object that was barely loaded in and the blood looked really strange, probably because the black and white they use is much more aggressive, the kind you'd see in a more "cartoony" (less realistic graphic) game, like mark of the ninja

So, if I'm hearing this right, Yasuke is
- Walking around fully decked out for war
- Blatantly ignoring honor and tradition
- Claiming to be both a samurai and a free agent at the same time, despite those being mutually exclusive
- And is using his katana in a way that has no known school of origin
Did... did Ubisoft accidentally do a racism? Cause it sounds like by trying to prop this guy up on a pedastle, they made him into a violent thug. So I guess congrats on them for managing to disrespect both sides instead of _just_ Japan.
Being accidentally racist and completely detached with reality, that is a recurrent behavior, Twitter is like a farm for this kind of stuff

Just the fact that they mix different clans' symbols on armours and garments is laughable 😂 they really have 0 respect for Japanese culture.

I'd like to point out that he wouldn't be walking around in his armor that way if he WAS a samurai. The armor was used for ceremonies, parades, and other special occasions outside of battles. They would have never just traveled around like that. His character design as a whole makes absolutely no sense.

I've always been obsessed with Japanese culture and history, and in recent years, authentic representations of it. This feels like the 47 Ronin movie where they just mixed and matched Asian cultures together without caring.
I know exactly how you feel, a shinobi would've mixed in much more smoothly into Assassin's Creed, it's such a shame
new video out now, hope to see you there!
Amazing points 😂

Completely agree👍
Thank you for your comments!
Yes exactly! 🤣

I still remember one of the first assassination scenes of Ezio Auditore from the original trilogy. When he kills VIerri he get's told off by his uncle Mario to respect the dead even when it was one of the guys who framed and killed (and boasted and gloated about doing it in his face) most of his family.
I don't expect this to be in the newer games but I stopped after AC 3

AAA studios like Ubisoft do take advantage of any system they can to keep costs as low as possible, make as much money as possible for as low of an efford as possible without regard for any morals, keeping themselves safe with whatever shield they can use when someone does go against them.
Not to mention they all are funded by certain organizations to make this kind of content. Take away the sauce, they will dry up real fast because there is no talent left in those studios, certainly no talent which isn't silenced and restrained

19:48 the hip hop out of nowhere, lmao this moment will live forever in infamy. What a wonderful trend, it keeps on giving
Just to add context about "self introductions" and "claiming the head"
The two are actually related.
Yo dude, here from the asmond stream, and not to be corny but I like you and your companions style
Just saying.
very deep insight
thank you for the comment!
I'ma a fucking Nazi
-Your Comment
Yeah, jerking off to your yaoi furry lolis might be progressive, but doesn't mean Japanese society has made it a cultural heritage
The second fact is that you are baffling trying to excuse cultural appropriation because "muh slaves were forced to do it"? What? Are you actually that bigoted?
And the final fact is that you assumed I'm a right-winger? Because who else would ever possibly criticise anything the perfectly morally correct left-wing does? Obviously an alt-right Nazi would, no one else! It's all just a dogwhistle which I can hear because I'm a good little boy!

Sakuna RIce & Ruin is a really good game that understands how NPCs (and player) are doing agricultural activities, unlike NPCs in AC Shadows
