Giant foreign guy in samurai armor with a sword. If he wasn't well known, he'd be arrested and executed by the shogunate for impersonating nobility. It's questionable whether or not other samurais would accept his position without some serious pushback. Nobunaga's favor or not.
They could have avoided a lot of trouble if they had just stuck with having both player characters being Japanese... but then the one-legged Torii gate would have lit a fire under their asses anyway.

It's also not like they couldn't have made a legit semi-historically accurate African AC game - there's tons of content to choose from. So much so that it's crazy that this even has to be said. It's bizarre that they chose to do this
But that's racist! you have to only look up to people that look exactly like you! Because judging people by the content of their character it's bad now and segregation it's good and progressive somehow
The real irony is that there aren't millions of people who enjoy african culture. Because there's only so much cannibalism you can do before you get bored and want a change.
Lol this might actually be genius as a parody game. The game would actually be more well done too since the people making it do actually know and care, they're just doing it for the lulz.

It's easy to see why Nobunaga liked having Yasuke around, he was an imposing guy thanks to his height and dark complexion. But it doesn't work for an assassin. You need someone who blends in much like real life shinobi did.
Saying “Yasuke was a ninja” is like saying “Sir” Elton John is an actual, horse-riding, sword-fighting (ok, I’ll give you that one), battle-hardened (there I go again) “Knight”.
We already got Egypt in Origins. And I don’t know if you could consider Bayek to be Black (his VA was) but he was a person of color and that game got a lot of love from critics and regular gamers for mixing up the series’ formula while also telling a decent story. But hey, according to Ubisoft we’re all “bigots” for not wanting to support their current year idiocy.
Jin Sakai: Who attacked you? What does the enemy look like? Peasant: uhm, he was big and uhm.. Jin Sakai: Can you be more specific, like what color, race, clan? Peasant: You know what, I am actually fine, I don't mind my family being murdered, I'd rather not be cancelled
The one legged Torii Gate is the most egregious offense to me. That would be like a Saudi game dev making an advertisement with cute characters dancing on the collapsing twin towers. How did none of Ubisoft's "historical and cultural experts" notice this? It's just bizarre.
Putting a black guy in the role of a Japanese assassin in feudal Japan was truly the most idiotic decision ever made by a gaming company. What could have been an amazing game turned to woke garbage that is plain for everyone to see and simply pissed off a lot of the core audience. What they need to do is add a third character option (male Japanese) so that the players can choose and play what they want.
Sakanoue no tamuramaro was a black African warrior who became a prominent general in early Japan and the first person to hold the title SEI-I-TAI-SHOGUN Barbarian subduing generalissimo. Anthropologist Ronald b. Dixon noted that the earliest populations of Japan were a mix of proto-australiod and proto-negroid types, with physical characteristics that can still be seen in some of the population today.
This out of context interpretation is amusing because Guillemot talked so much crap through the years, he became a easy target, a meme machine (similar to Todd Howard). In the end, his response reminds me a great quote, Peter Moore said this "There are no bad games, there are just bad price points" and I agree with that sentiment, if AC Shadows promoted itself as a fantasy game (make it even more blatant, not many people know Assassins Creed went crazy with the super powers, Odin and Loki showed up, Zeus, etc.. the alien stuff escalated. I and many other stopped playing ever since Black Flag, at that period AC was not as crazy as it is nowadays) AND, the most important, readjust the price to $50 or $40, instead of charging full price at launch, that would improve it's PR a lot. You can't really criticize Yasuke not only because of the classic stunt of using "minorities" as a shield, there's also the fantasy factor, so who cares about history (no one will scrutinize the historical elements of the upcoming Indiana Jones for this same exact reason)... and if the game looks subpar and not as polished, whatever, it's 40 bucks at launch, why not give it a chance? But here we are, Ubisoft sells fast food at premium prices and the marketing is disastrous, what do you expect Guillemot?
@@RRRRRRRRR33 Assassins Creed and Farcry went downhill a long time ago. I only buy Ubisoft games pre-owned on console. Their pre-owned value quickly drops like a stone. That way I can test whatever mediocre shite they've churned out without feeling stung and Ubisoft don't get a penny from me.
The problem isn’t that Yasuke is in the game, it’s WHY he’s in the game! AC has always interacted with historical figures, but they’ve always been side characters so they can stay true to their place in history (for the most part). If they wanted a game with a black protagonist, do something like the Belgian Congo or Ancient Carthage! Edit: Ok, I get it. Ancient Carthage wasn’t primarily black. I’m just saying at least it wouldn’t be totally outta place for black men to be among them! At least they’re on the same continent.
TBF, there have been moments in Assassin's Creed where you briefly played as a historical character. (Syndicate briefly let you play as Jack the Ripper for its DLC, and the opening to Odyssey had you play as Leonidas.) I'm not opposed to having an AssCreed game having a real world character as the playable protag, but yeah, Yasuke was not a good pick for this game.
Yes, cameos of historical characters are in the DNA of AC. They could have done that with Yasuke, too, and nobody would have complained. But they decided the worst.
Also the MSM was disingenuous and tried to frame the issue most people have with it that Yasuke wasn't real. Most people just have the issue of not being able to play as a Japanese Samurai.
Best part is good ol Ubisoft is functionally doing colonization of Japanese history, the level of racism on display in the game is also just chef's kiss bad.
Doing what the Allies wisely decided would be a terrible idea after WWII. The Allies didn't try to impose their culture and ideas too strongly on Japan for a reason, because those of the Yamato Race are fiercely proud of their culture, heritage and country. This is going to end badly for Ubisoft.
@@sakkra93 By the Leftist definition, what Ubi are doing is DEcolonisation. Tearing down civilisation in order to protect savagery. I am an Ubisoft employee. The thing about the HR is absolutely spot on. We have a dedicated department in HQ called DEI, Diversity, Equality, and Inclusivity. All company policy and creative ideas has to pass through them. Without the department's go ahead, nothing gets done. Now the company is promoting women across the board to roles they are unfit, unqualified and undeserving off just to maintain the golden ratio. Being a good game developer or tester is of no merit in Ubisoft. You just need to have a Vagina, or both, to hit the holy trifecta of DEI
I wish you the best of luck. Thank you for exposing this. If Ubisoft finds out about your comment. You may get fired. Hopefully not. No wonder Ubisoft has gone to shit.
@ThePr0ducer . Exactly! I work at my local Food Lion in Virginia. DEI rules with an iron fist at the company, too. Of course, in my hometown. There's a lot of Trump supporters shopping there, and they just deal with them. And some work with me. Not too many, though. But they already tried to sack me once over my political opinion, which I voiced on my county's Facebook community group over county government DEI policy with a local progressive woman. I was pulled aside after I got to work that day a few months ago, early Aprl of '24. I was brought before the head manager of the store Kelly. Who I personally know and I went to school with her daughter. I'm a known Trump supporter, and I'm not shy about it. But I simply disassociate my Facebook profile from my workplace so it doesn't reflect on the company. But yes, I got a "strike" because of that. A fellow coworker of mine in the produce department, who is also a Trump supporter, talked to me about it and said, "What you went through about that woman on Facebook was bullshit. That's your personal opinion and your 1st Amendment right to free speech. Kelly has no business putting you on the spot because of that." Kelly was, however, respectful of me as I am towards her. And that's because I maintain a reputation of respect at work, and thus, people trust me. Some regardless of my politics, which is as it should be.

Ubisoft literally picked Yasuke because of his skin color, not backstory. That's not trying to represent anyone, that's just an insult to History and Japan culture for injecting your own agenda into a foreign culture.
As a person who grew up in Japan, I’ve waited ages for an assassins creed game set in Japan. Ubisoft dying to become a statement of how DEI can kill your a company (making others drop it all together) is the most win win situation i can think of
DEI is definitely a large component of it but making the same games for 20+ years has to factor in as well. I just think people are tired of these franchises.
all they had to do was make the main character just the female ninja, and keep yasuke out of the story completely. he was an irrelevant slave in reality. nothing he did had any impact or influence on anything that ever happened in japan. Ubisoft is cooked.
@ there’s nothing by delusion in your comment. Naoe is the main character you hate yasuke so much you don’t even pay attention to the actual main character of the game who has more promotional material about them. Yasuke was a given land and a sword when in Japan and worked under nobunaga so the statement that he was an irrelevant slave is historical inaccurate. Not saying he was a samurai but he basically had everything you needed to be one and definitely had an impact on Japan history considering they are still confused and interested in black peoples and their different skin and hair textures.
I mean, homosexual relationships were relatively common in Japan, but it's a complicated thing to show on media, hence why most historical japanese shows don't bother with it, but Ubislop being Ubislop, they just saw an excuse for """""representation""""", same with turning Yasuke into a samurai when, at most, he would a be a low level retainer, just to excuse having him as a playable character. Edit: complicated as in the relationships themselves are complicated to show since they have a lot of nuance to display if they want to show them properly

I'm Portuguese, son of an History teacher. People don't want to acknowledge that Yasuke was just a slave from Angola, that Jesuits brought to Japan. To Nobunaga he was just some exotic pet to flaunt about. A black slave being a samurai is ... an insult, really. As I always say "Carrying pianos doesn't make me a pianist but a mule", it's the same with Yasuke, he might've even carried a katana, but he wouldn't own a single straw in feudal Japan.
"Carrying pianos doesn't make me a pianist but a mule" That's pretty funny. I'm going to remember that, it could come in handy some day. 🙂 Is that a common Portuguese saying?

TBF, there have been previous Assassin's Creed games where the playable character wasn't a native of the region. (Revelations, Black Flag and Valhalla, specifically) And as Ariqsyafwan pointed out, those games had more of a narrative justification for why they were the protags of their games.
Just because the guy is black doesn’t mean it’s not just the old white savior trope all over again. Imagine making a game about a heroic native American warrior, defending his tribe against incursions from white settlers, and then making the hero that one historical white guy who joined a native tribe in the 1870s.
That was basically the Nioh series. Although there wasn't much focus on historical accuracy due to all the supernatural elements. Also, they changed Adams to be irish for some reason.

I don't think people even care, they could've just made a game about Japanese people and no one would've really cared. They could've messed up everything else and people would've whined a little on the internet but that's it.
That would have worked out about the same as when Rings of Power hired Tom Shippey, probably the foremost Tolkien scholar in the world. He was fired after two episodes because he kept saying no to their ideas as they didn't fit with the established lore, and replaced with someone less knowledgable but who backed The Message. ...Allegedly. As far as the reasoning, at least, not the result.
The problem is the people in charge are the ones always "right" about their beliefs and everyone else is wrong. The Bully popular kids from school are now the Bully adults making games. 20+ and 30+ years ago, nerds banded together and made some awesome and fun games with little thoughts about making billion dollar games. They all got pushed out in favor of tapes like snake oil sales people and shareholders. The political charged people are the current trend and so they are in the game sphere
Seriously, Yasuke, a samurai of Oda Clan and bodyguard of Oda Nobunaga, and a ninja as protaganists of a Assassin's Creed game? Oda Nobunaga is probably the most templar daimyo across the sengoku era. He bought tons of firearms for portuguese, puppeted a shogun and massacred everyone who against him. If you want a protaganist who needs to hidden in people, sabotage the grand scheme of templar. Ikko ikki, the autonomous buddist coalition, would be a much better choice. Unlike samuri they don't show their identity in public unless they're required. There were many monasteries in feudal Japan can be player's safe house. They were the biggest pain in the ass for Nobunaga and many daimyos.

Ezio was quite one-dimensional, I basically don't remember any of his lines or plot choices. If one had to choose from Ubi-created characters, Jade from Beyond Good and Evil is much more memorable.
Copies of the Witcher? what? if that was the case, every Ubi game would be a masterpiece. What a weird comparison. No, they make the same game with a different name. Far Cry, Assassin's and Tom Clancy games, all the same. Nothing even remotely close to the Witcher.
Yasuke wouldve been perfect for the historical support character role they always have in these games. He couldve been a more relatable presence to explain things you might not understand about japan too. Im not saying i wouldnt play as him, its just a game after all. But man that decision was wierd.
Twitter users and journalists like Paul Tassi who support this game and mock people who want historical accuracy are the same people who supported Battlefield V, black cleopatra, black anne Boleyn, and woman king then turn around and whine about the Florida government changing the public school curriculum and accuse them of teaching false information to kids. I just don’t understand why companies want to choose the path of most resistance and do stuff they know would piss off gamers. If diversity is so important to them and they really wanted to make a game about a black protagonist, they could’ve shelved shadows and made a game in an African, North and South American, Middle Eastern and maybe even in a European setting, ie places that historically interacted with Africa a lot because of trade and that other *reason* countries were visiting Africa a lot. Instead they’re too lazy and they just wanted the social media brownie points without putting in real effort for diversity You know the situation is dire when Ubisoft delayed the game to polish it when they usually couldn’t give less of a fuck and just release it in a buggy mess.
The fact that they never choose to make cool stories about original or historically accurate black people and always choose to swap them in to places they don't fit is not an accident. It shows their priorities are not to build up "marginalized people" but to tear down "oppressors".
But we've already gotten a Black protagonist and it was also a woman. Aveline lived during the time of Connor during the Revolutionary War. She was also half French American and half Black American. She was a free woman and looked at the slaves in her southern America with pity and she wanted to rescue them. Then we had a dlc to Black Flag where you played as a Black man that wanted to liberate slavery in the times when Connor's grandfather was a young man. So it's like we've actually already gotten that to a degree and those stories weren't pandering either.
Based on what's happening with Ubisoft's stock price, I imagine AC Shadows has to release in February no matter what and they are just praying the negativity dies down and their casual audience saves them. Of course they are dropping the game on Valentine's day in the middle of about 5 other anticipated games so I don't think that's a guarantee either
Literally two weeks after AC Shadows is Monster Hunter WIlds release, probably one of the most anticipated Games next to GTA. I hope they fumble out of existence.
Note that it doesn't go as far as to give us a real Sub Saharan African in his own land, teaching us his own history and culture, and having adventures suitable to his people in the time it was set. I read a lot of history but I have run across very little from this area.
I like how they point out how important Yasuke was for being accepted by Oda Nobunaga, despite the fact, by thier standards, Nobudaga would be considered a war tyrant.
@@Hungabrigoo. And yet we have an extensive historical record on actual warriors in history such as Augustus Caesar that lived far before 1600 AD. So something isn't adding up here. What's worse is that Japan has countless preserved records regarding their history and this is double so with Samurai. Samurai were regarded as carriers of the entirety of Japan on their shoulders and so they weren't treated like celebrities or whatever. They were regarded with the utmost respect and so someone that became a Samurai had an extensive record to show for it and their history was preserved. Critical is correct with his analysis of Yusuke. There's 0 evidence, none, that he ever faced battle or that he was ever a Samurai at all. Well trained Japanese historians have even gone back to the records to double check due to the controversy of this game and they've found nothing. Even Ubisoft have blocked them when they've tried to tell people that Ubisoft were not telling the truth.

They could’ve just made him a character that you can meet in game. Maybe even a trusted ally and friend of the main character. I think that would’ve gone over much better.
No one would have had an issue with this at all. Real historical figures were already placed in various AC games such as the Ezio games and of course AC3

They need to be bold and remove Yasuke as a playable character, own up that it was a bad idea by activists who infiltrated the company, and were chasing trends. Replace Yasuke with a Japanese warrior who is native to the culture being represented. It will cause scathing attacks from the left but you have to calmly stand your ground and give your reasons for why the decision was ultimately made. This will save Ubisoft and would finally put them back in gamers good graces again.
That would be impossible to accomplish as it would require new modeling and rigging, an entirely new script, and a new voice actor + numerous others for localization all in the timeframe of a few months.
@@torakazu2269 Unfortunately you're right. They'd have to effectively remake the game and they've already spent way too much money on what they've got.
@@torakazu2269 Not really. If its true that they already had designs for the character to be japanese way back when, it shouldn't take too long to model it in 3D. 1:34 with a generous help of one western 'academic' grifter who basically made 15 lines of actual text into a 400 page book, and hyped himself with things like creating wikipedia pages and then quoting them as if they were any proof of anything.
1:55 This tells you even more about how good Ghost of Tsushima is, considering the overwhelming reaction from Japanese people was to lavish it with praise for its accuracy and attention to detail. This was even more surprising considering that Sucker Punch is an American studio. But looking at the reaction from a seemingly similar game with AC: Shadows, you know that Ubisoft screwed things up, big time.
Remember, they tried to advertise Yusuke's katana as historically immersive merchandise, while in actuality it's a shameless copy of a sword from an Anime. And they wonder why the Japanese are upset.
While I agree with Drinker's video overall I must correct him in one thing: Yasuke was never a samurai, he was Oda Nobunaga's retainer, essentially a bit more than a walking loot chest for his stuff.
It is not known whether he was a samurai or not. The primary sources mentioned that people talked about that Nobunaga might make him a "lord". There is no record that he was made into one though.

I wish you the best of luck. Thank you for exposing this. If Ubisoft finds out about your comment. You may get fired. Hopefully not. No wonder Ubisoft has gone to shit.
DEI is the death of all that is quality.

They're right to be angry; this isn't just people complaining for the fun of it like we've seen many times in the gaming community. It was a bizarre decision by Ubisoft and they deserve the backlash.
Ubisoft literally picked Yasuke because of his skin color, not backstory. That's not trying to represent anyone, that's just an insult to History and Japan culture for injecting your own agenda into a foreign culture.

I miss Ezio. Remember that protagonist? Why do they keep making cheap copies of the Witcher in different locations?
Ezio was quite one-dimensional, I basically don't remember any of his lines or plot choices. If one had to choose from Ubi-created characters, Jade from Beyond Good and Evil is much more memorable.
Such a good protagonist

Instead they’re too lazy and they just wanted the social media brownie points without putting in real effort for diversity
You know the situation is dire when Ubisoft delayed the game to polish it when they usually couldn’t give less of a fuck and just release it in a buggy mess.
The fact that they never choose to make cool stories about original or historically accurate black people and always choose to swap them in to places they don't fit is not an accident. It shows their priorities are not to build up "marginalized people" but to tear down "oppressors".
Same people who think men can be women and it should be pushed on children
@@publicprivateerto tear down society whilst claiming to help build it.
They want to fail in silence 😊
Releasing in the same month as the new Monster Hunter is not a smart move.
Also helps that it's Black History month.
They're also releasing it during Black History month, which is a smarmy move from them.
Literally two weeks after AC Shadows is Monster Hunter WIlds release, probably one of the most anticipated Games next to GTA. I hope they fumble out of existence.

My question is, why is this game when people care about historical accuracy from the franchise?
I thought assassins creed was about assassins blending in, so why is the main character of this game a 12ft tall black man in Japan?
haha
Because it’s cool, can’t wait to buy it
I like how they point out how important Yasuke was for being accepted by Oda Nobunaga, despite the fact, by thier standards, Nobudaga would be considered a war tyrant.

@@Hungabrigoo Which itself suggests he didn't really have one.

Legit every single AC have done this, Da Vinci, Washington brothers, Blackbeard, Bonaparte, Karl Marx, Caesar. All of them are just supporting characters who will help/fight the fictional main characters that we play as

Racism against asian men is an attack on all of us
The one thing that could bring them together was their hatred of western games. It's beautiful.
Only this company can do that, make three countries which are mortal enemies to unite together. Also if this were China, ubisoft will close their shanghai studio, bc black protagonist killing their people with American rap music, just wow
@@HangMrH they should probably hang up their hatred already. It's like the clowns in the US that hate white men, because some owned a few slaves over a hundred years ago.

White man travels to Africa and becomes Africa's king where every tribe bows to him.
There are plenty of movies like that already. Tarzan comes to mind immediately, you fuc--king racist buffoon.
I give that about a 1% chance of happening. I don't think it would help much, it's not like people would just forget what ubisoft tried to do.
Unfortunately, Ubisoft is overwhelmingly infested with people who would rather keep him in at all costs.
They can also use the same rigging, since movements arent race-specific. The script, voice acting, and localization will definitely be the problematic issue, tho. You're right about that. Not to mention having to rewrite many interactions and portions of the game to erase the whole black samurai nonsense.
2:29 hell in this little clip, I noticed so many flaws; if he was samurai, everyone would be moving out of the way, and i noticed not everyone bowed. I'll go back to "Ghost of Tsushima..."

Can’t argue with that actually. Didn’t they literally display the Nassau Pirate Commonwealth so poorly it fundamentally shifted the public knowledge of the band into historical inaccuracy?
I mean they been doing this shit for years now it’s not recent.

So what is the original version of the story? 🤔
He used himself as a source lmao
Hard to believe 20 years later people still believe stuff because: I saw it on the internet. Books cost money, making internet fluff does not.
Remember, they tried to advertise Yusuke's katana as historically immersive merchandise, while in actuality it's a shameless copy of a sword from an Anime.

you may want to rewatch that portion of the video; Drinker wasn't making that claim, he was speaking from Ubisoft's point of view.
It is not known whether he was a samurai or not. The primary sources mentioned that people talked about that Nobunaga might make him a "lord". There is no record that he was made into one though.

I have played every AC since the first one. This one, I won't touch it with a stick while you are imposed to play yasuke.

It still amazes me that Thomas Lockley managed to write an *ENTIRE NOVEL* on a person whose entire mentioning can be collected into *1 and a half or 2 pages.* (If you really push it and add the later Jesuit reports on him)
Yet we have Musashi or even Akechi who has hundreds of thousands written about them or better yet, why not just have a Japanese Ninja who is part of the Assassin Brotherhood's Asian contingent?
