What bonsai soil recipe are you using? Nigel's? I like the pond baskets for training your trees!! On average, how long do you keep them in the baskets before repotting in a bonsai?pot?
The mystery succulent at @32:38 is Plectranthus ernstii (also known as Bonsai Mint). I have one and its super cool. Very easy to care for and it blooms almost constantly
They are very interesting I would like to see Nigel try one. They were talking about it in last tour, few people commented what it is but Nigel most likely forgot the name, its not easy to remember so I am not surprised. Maybe someone who knows more about the species should email him some info
at 32:37 the plant is likely a Plectranthus saccatus or some other species on the same genus. the purple hue is due to exposition to sunlight. the more it gets the stronger the color gets
I saw Hokkaido Elms for the first time at the Edinburgh Royal Botanical Gardens this week. They are almost like a cross between Cotoneaster and Chinese Elm with tiny leaves and horizontal growing habit. The examples there were planted in rock gardens but would have made amazing tiny bonsai. Great to see Connor’s trees.
Mystery Plant I believe is a Holy Basil, Conner has a tremendously amazing bonsai collection, I couldn't imagine the opportunity of having a place to do my own thing!!! So amazing!!
So cool! So many I'd like to own but I'd get overwhelmed LOL I still have over 150 Pomegranate seedling... I have to be satisfied with those for now Ha!!
Sorry for being a bit pedantic, but two i's at the end of the latin name is pronounced ee-eye. I know because I also used to pronounce it as "ee" until I was corrected :)
Just moved to a place full of crazy looking buckthorne, you bet I'll bet collecting some. Even tho it's invasive its almost a Canadian staple now, it's all around the highways in ontario
I'm in SW Wisconsin here and buckthorn is a rampant problem. My dad has been fighting it on his property for years. As such, of course, I have free reign to collect as much buckthorn as I want. :D I only grabbed one so far, and it didn't survive the -40F/C deep freeze. Nor did the rosemary which had been going great. Next time I'll make a cold box for 'em. Yes. You read right. I actually managed to kill a buckthorn. It had been going nicely too.
Hi Nigel, impressive buckthorn. I have four of those unfortunately. I don't experience die back as much - although I once lost a branch but blamed it on winter. I don't yet know however how to promote branching. I may try full defoliation next year.
I am loving working with thyme, it can grow pretty fast and the tiny leaves and flowers let them miniaturize so well. I think I need to get some of the variegated kind to add to my collection of them now after seeing Connors.
Sorry Nigel i missed this premier - normally the exact right time for me - i was at Greenwood Bonsai Nursery with Corbin Tomlinson. Enjoying it now Ive made it home - thanks Nigel
Now I know what my elm Hokkaido elm is called, thanks, I had forgotten :) plus I love Virginia creepers, mines already coloring a little. I had no idea nurseries had them, tho, that's kinda crazy to me! lol
Hi Nigel, I just joined TBS so maybe I'll be able to bid on that tree! I chopped down a buckthorn recently that was growing on a fence line where my parents live in preparation for future collection. I've read that if the ground is wet they can just be pulled out of the ground roots and all.
Hi Nigel. I’m not sure if you have an adenium or not but I have one that will need to be brought in soon. I live in NB so our weather is pretty much the same as yours. My question is what type of light should I get for this desert rose considering my room doesn’t get enough light for the rose over the winter? Kim🇨🇦
Thanks everyone for the kind words and positive feedback :)
Philippe is the French potter, you can check him out at terre o vert

Connor you really should start a channel yourself, would love to watch you work on trees! Love from Bharat(India).
I think he will, but it takes up a lot of time, maybe in the future!!!!
So much great stuff in this video Connor! I've enjoyed chatting with you about them this morning.
Awesome, Connor's place is always full of cool stuff!

Awesome Jason, I've seen some larger ones at Chris Hendry's place, amazing little Elms!
Really cool trees, a lot of hard work there 👍
Thanks J, it never fails, I always come home with more trees!!!
Mystery Plant I believe is a Holy Basil, Conner has a tremendously amazing bonsai collection, I couldn't imagine the opportunity of having a place to do my own thing!!! So amazing!!
Mysteri plant its a Plectranthus species, they have those characteristic flowers and strong smell in the leaves
Thanks Arnaldo, that's definitely it!!!
They also are very easy to propagate by cuttings!!
it's Plectranthus ernstii “Bonsai Mint”
Love updates and new faces
Yo that small tree at 32:34 is a Plectranthus! Lookin great. Too much fun.
It is amazing how much the tiger bark has developed. I'd believe you if you told me it wasn't the same tree.
Yes, I was very surprised when I saw it too!
So cool! So many I'd like to own but I'd get overwhelmed LOL I still have over 150 Pomegranate seedling... I have to be satisfied with those for now Ha!!
Love the rosemary Connor! I Have been working on a couple of these of the past 2 years
They are really good for bonsai, as long as you don't let them get too cold in the winter, they do fine!
@@TheBonsaiZone Thanks for the tip Nigel, they don't seem to mind the winters here in the Netherlands.
In case you guys still don't know what their mistery caudex plant is it's an "Plectranthus ernstii" 👍🏻
Thanks Patrick, that looks like it 100 percent!!
Sorry for being a bit pedantic, but two i's at the end of the latin name is pronounced ee-eye. I know because I also used to pronounce it as "ee" until I was corrected :)
That is only partly correct, as the proper Latin pronunciation is ee ee.

Love the wine crate!
Another great video Nigel 🌳🌲🌳
Thanks Michael, glad you enjoyed it!!

I guess every tree has a limit, a Buckthorn death is seldom mourned!

That thyme bonsai just looks so magical to me! I’ll be on the lookout for something like that because, wow is it beautiful!
Yes, you can make some wonderful small trees with Thyme!

@@birder4life999 I wonder if the variegated kind is easy or difficult to find? Either way I want one!
Agree that Connor's mystery plant might be Plectranthus or Orthosiphon. What a nice conslusion to the adventures in Connor's bonsai collection.
Thanks Pat, good to know!!
Absolutely beautiful. Very nice, Connor 😁
Thanks Lilly, it's always fun touring Connor's benches, and playing with Appa!
Can we get an update on the willow leaf when something happens and you’ll find out what could of had happen?
Yes, I'll keep checking in on the trees!
I'm fairly sure that Connor's mystery plant is a Plectranthus of some kind.
Thanks David!

Yes, I think they have a very shallow root system with few thick roots! Hope to see you at the meetings!
Nigel pls update on the tamarix Bonsai which u started...I have one and I love it...pls give me some dos and don'ts on it
Thanks John, yes, sadly it died over the winter and I'm looking for another!
I love Appa 😍
Appa loves to play and loves people too!
Willow leaf ficus enjoys the soil to dry out a bit in between watering, and it is also shade tolerant, so putting it in shade might help. My 2 cents.
Thanks Chris, I hope both Xin and Connor get there willow leaf ficus going strong!

Nice defoliation in the face Connor!!! ✌😂
Lol!
The fringe tree is very susceptible to the emerald ash borer. I lost mine from those bugs.
Adoro ficus
Thanks Dragaum!
Buckthorn is also a host for oat crown rust so farmers would thank you for not letting it go to seed.
Whats that mystery plant?
Plectranthus -- I think.
I think it is actually this...
th-cam.com/video/B8blQmYTvIo/w-d-xo.html
Are you going to be building another green house in the back Nigel?
Yes, maybe more of a screen house and a cold frame for winter.
Connor!!! Xin!!! Yay \o/
