    Hi Nigel, just missed your premier. Wanted to share that I once collected a buckthorn in late July in a drought where we hadn't had water for 2 months and the buckthorn never skipped a beat. Mine might have been more vigorous than yours. But yours should be fine.

    That Buckthorn sure is looking much better! I was hoping you would do something to show the root flare and you did! I love seeing more mature trees worked as bonsai instead of little nursery stock. Well done! Hope to see the seeds germinated in a future video.

    I love using invasive weeds for bonsai. They can make lovely trees, but the low investment cost makes experimenting a safer thought. I have Hawthorn, privet, olives as well as lots of varieties of prunus that are collected on roadsides rather than slashed or sprayed. I have saved the trees, and now get to enjoy the bonsai! Good luck with the buckthorn, it has good "bones"!

    • @alexandruserban2138
      @alexandruserban2138 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oooh, finally I found the name of that shrubs we have around in town, "privet". Also spirarea shrubs that blooms in spring would look great as bonsai. :)

    I have buckthorn everywhere where I live maybe I should go collect one, hey I’ll stop it from making seeds and spreading! Also I have a question, I have a ficus that is a very vigorous root grower that needs a repot, fall is coming and I don’t know if it will be good to do it when it gets cold and I bring it inside any advice? I think we live in a pretty similar climate.

    Pulled & dug these up for many summers for a midwest woodland conservation project. Never thought about trying to turn one into a bonsai!

  • @barbkrienke8400
    @barbkrienke8400 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for mentioning that the buckthorn is invasive and that you won’t let it set berries. It is horribly invasive here in Michigan too. The only thing I’ve ever done with a buckthorn is try to kill it! 😋

  • @ianrowe9337

    Im pleased to have seen the start of the famous greenhouse , now i have a question : is what you call Buckthorn the same as our English Blackthorn? ... if so, we have a 20ft one in the back garden ....

    Nice video and great tree! I lost a lot of trees this summer due to very warm days and some diseases that attacked them,but I'm gonna plant seeds for new trees as usual.And I'm gonna try to bonsai some "Tree of heaven" aka "Ailanthus Altissima" (since I got one a while ago and unexpectedly it can get miniaturized easily).💖💡🌳

    The gravel layer being so thick could act as an insulator from the cold of the ground?

    What is the Oldest bonsai tree you have right now?

  • @dk2614
    @dk2614 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Not sure if you are aware but buckthorn is either male or female. You need both for berries. I think the fruit is actually classified as a drupe but technicalities right.....?

    Nigel, one question wondering if you can help. I am from india and recently imported many tree seeds from US In small quantities 10-20 seeds each variety. I chose to buy multiple varities all at once because of import restrictions and shipping and customs cost involved. Seller has provided instructions for each variety and surprisingly I found all of them says, it needs to be stratified. Since I am in tropical climate, and now I have put them in fridge. But do yoy think all of them needs to be stratified and whether do you think it will survive after I plant them after stratification? Your experience, views and opinion would be helpful for me.
    Since your are in similar conditions as of US, I am thinking whether the instructions are not a generic one and it's not fake , copy pasted instructions for all trees.
    Can you recommend any online seed seller from canada. that would also be good for my future references.
